How To Selectively Preview In Camera Raw?

I was reading in one of the Photoshop magazines that there was a way to selectively preview attributes in Camera Raw but I can't remember how to do it.
To be more specific: When you are working in one of the develop tabs ( any of the upper left special tabs) in camera raw and toggle the preview button it only shows you the preview for that specific tab (compared to the original raw file). I want to know how I can preview the original image compared to ALL of the attributes I've changed at once OR only preview the one specific attribute that I've changes compared to the original raw file.
Does anyone know how to do this? Please advise.

Terminology-wise, your description of what you want seems to be off a little, since there's not really an "original raw file" per se.
There are the settings you started with, i.e., the Camera Raw Defaults (if the raw file has not been opened before) - or - the stored Image Settings for this raw file (if you opened it before).  I'm assuming what you're asking for is a way to see the current entire batch of settings, vs. what you started with.
When you make control changes, the set of parameters is now considered Custom Settings.
The way that comes to mind to compare is to click the fly-out menu icon and choose Image Settings (i.e., the settings you started with), or Custom Settings (i.e., your current changes since starting with the image this session).

Unfortunately, I know of no way to assign keys to menu items in Camera Raw.  That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, just that I don't know of a way.

Try the easiest way first:  simply select the Updates menu item in Photoshop's Help menu.
You want to be on version 6.7 of Camera Raw.
If for some reason the auto updater fails, you can download the updated plug-in and install it yourself by following the instructions on the download page, here:

  • Curious question about Lightroom previews and Camera Raw Cache

Posted in the Flickr Lightroom Group as well:
I have noticed something about the Lightroom (3.6) previews and Camera Raw cache that have me puzzled.
I create a brand new empty catalog and purge the Camera Raw Cache.
Then I import ONE Nikon RAW (NEF) file with dimensions 2592 x 3872 (10 megapixels - 10,036,224 pixels).
Next I export that NEF file to an uncompressed 8-bit TIFF file. You would expect the size of that TIFF file to be roughly 30 megabytes (10 megapixels x 3 bytes per RGB value) and in fact the TIFF file is 30,135,830 bytes in size. If you export the same TIFF file but specify ZIP compression the resulting file size is 10,834,038 bytes. Obviously the compression obtained here is going to be highly specific to the image but so far no surprises.
During import I specify render 1:1 previews and I go into Loupe mode and view the entire image at 1:1 size. I also visit the develop module and do a bunch of manipulations on the image but no cropping.
At the conclusion of all of that I exit from Lightroom and examine the size of the Camera Raw Cache folder as well as the Lightroom previews folder. It would be my expectation that the previews folder  should have a rendered full image and that the Camera Raw Cache should also have a rendered form of the raw data. What would you expect the size of those respective folders to be?
In fact - in my trials the previews folder totals a mere 1,675,264 bytes and the Camera Raw Cache which contains one DAT file corresponding to the one cached image is merely 267,374 bytes. This does not seem like nearly enough bits to preserve the rendered image nor is there a full size image tucked away in the actual catalog either - that file is not large enough to contain that. And yet I can use Loupe mode at 1:1 size and move from image to image with no loading delays (even when importing multiple files).
I'm wondering if I've missed something obvious in my analysis and if not, whether someone might care to speculate as to what magic Adobe is practicing here. Even if we grant them some special algorithm to compress their previews I don't see how they can achieve a compression so much greater than the ZIP-compressed TIFF file achieves.
And for those that might think to ask - I've repeated these experiments with multiple raw images and on both the PC and MAC platforms.
I look forward to some answers or interesting theories or perhaps someone might replicate the experiment and report findings.

MadMan and Hal - thanks so much.
So that was my D'Oh moment of what I was missing - the use of re-rendered JPGS as previews. That certainly does fit with the file sizes I am seeing. I had naively assumed that the previews might have tried to preserve the full fidelity of the image - But as you suggest that full fidelity is likely only there in the develop module.
This perhaps explains another observation from the Develop module - moving from one image to another might display "Loading" either briefly or across a longer duration. My guess is that the length of the loading process might have to do more with what is cached in RAM than cached on disk in the camera raw cache. More of a shame then that 64-bit Lightroom on 64-Bit Windows cannot grab more RAM than it seems to do at present.

  • Gamut warning preview in Camera Raw?

    I'm running Photoshop CS4 Extended v. 11.0 on Mac OS X 10.5.6.
Having marvelled at the tools in the new Camera Raw I have found gamut problems for CMYK print files once in Photoshop - is there a gamut preview in Camera Raw so I can save having to post-correct these files?
    Many thanks.

I understand that ACR was not intended to produce printer's plates but it is intended to produce images that will end up in InDesign and then on a printing press so I think it would be a useful feature if the gamut preview was an option when adjusting images in ACR.
I always leave the CMYK conversion until the last moment, as adjustments are more easily made in RGB but, having had a photographer sitting beside me, pushing me to get more saturation out of his images it would save the explanations, time and disappointment when I bring them into the document and check the gamut warning preview in Photoshop and find they need de-saturation and/or colour balancing.
In this case I am processing the raw files for the photographer but, if he or another photographer had done the processing themselves in ACR (without looking at the result in Photoshop with gamut preview) I'd have the same problem.
It's a pity because I will be less inclined to trust the effect the great tools in ACR will have on an image destined for print.

How do i update my camera raw? I can not find the download update I've just brought a new d4s and I'm using the iMac with cs6 version. PLEASE HELP..

The Adobe auto updater is pretty decent in CS6.  Just go to the Photoshop Help menu > Updates.
You will be able to update ACR, Photoshop and Bridge right there, if there are in fact updates available.

  • Bridge NEF view  - selected image altered - Camera Raw issue?

I use a Nikon D700  and CS3 Bridge on a MAC OSX 10.4.11, and when browsing NEF images in Bridge there is an action performed on the image whenever I click on it. I use the settings where a filmstrip is along the bottom and upon selection a larger image appears above. Initially the image appears as I recall exposing it and looks balanced with good saturation, but after selection the image brightens and loses saturation after a few moments. When I open the image in Camera Raw I find that the Brightness is set at +50 and the contrast is set at +25, and the Blacks slider is set at 5. When I reset those parameters to zero I do not recover the look of the image as it was before selection in the bridge window. In order to do that I have to raise the saturation, decrease the brightness and do a fair amount of work to get back to the way the image appeared in Bridge prior to selection. Can anyone tell me what is happening to the image in bridge and how to keep the image from changing after I select it, or at least how to find the settings that have been evidently applied to the image?  If I right click on the thumbnail first, I find that the image will open in camera raw without any changes being made in Bridge, so I was able to make jpegs that show the difference between the two images. The first image is as it appears before selcting the thumbnail, and the second is the image in camera raw. If I were to have selected the image normally with a left click in Bridge, the photo as you see it in camera raw would have appeared in bridge and not been recoverable to its earlier state. Can someone help me undertand what is happening here? How can I find out what Bridge or Camera Raw is doing to the images and retain the appearance as it first appears in Bridge? Thank you for your help.

    This is a common question.
What you see first in Bridge is actually a JPG which the camera has embedded in the NEF, and uses all the camera's color settings (contrast, saturation, etc.).  Once you select the NEF, ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) attempts to render its own preview of the NEF.  Because ACR does not understand the camera's color settings, it gives you its default rendering, which usually is somewhat different than the camera's.
In newer versions of ACR (5.x), Adobe has profiles which mimic the camera's presets ('Standard', 'Vivid', etc.) and can be applied automatically in Bridge.  Unfortunately, you will need CS4 for this version of ACR (and these profiles have some issues of their own, e.g. http://forums.adobe.com/thread/479960?tstart=0).  You can also create your own ACR presets to more or less emulate a particular look (I believe you will need CS4 for this as well).

  • How do you clear the Camera RAW settings?

When opening a photo in Bridge, the photo opens in it's original state but then Bridge quickly applies settings to it and it looks darker. How do I stop this from happening? Can I easily turn it off and on? I tried Edit>Apply Camera RAW Settings>Clear Camera Raw Settings but it did nothing.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks!

Hi and tanks for your answer
I´ve done it . I ´ve put all the settings to zero (brigthness, contrast , expose, etc..) and I´ve saved it as new CR default values, but the images continue "getting worse" (although not the same situation , now they lose all their "strong", i supose cause the zero values)
In my bridge thumnail i see the image as i taked it, right with the light and the color i want. but in the moment i select with my mouse the image to see it in preview mode, the image "gets worse".

Whenever I select "Edit In Photoshop 5.1" from within Lightroom 4, I get a warning message that I meed to upgrade to CR 7.2, yet, I don't see CR 7.2 as being available for the Mac.ha
How do I check to see which version of Camera Raw I have installed? No CR plug-in shows up in the plug-ins folder for Photoshop.
When I click on 'updates' in the Photoshop help menu, it says Photoshop is up to date there are no updates.
    Hmm...
Can someone help me with this?
    Thank You,
    Ken

There is a Camera Raw 7.2 updater available from:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/crawlspace/2011/03/keeping-photoshop-up-to-date .html#notconnected
I don't think it will be usable with Photoshop prior to CS6, though.
    CS5.1 uses Camera raw 6.7.

  • How do I edit in Camera Raw?

The only option for editing a file is in Photoshop CS4, but I want to edit in Camera RAW. How do I set this up?

So how could I solve this?
In Lightroom, select "Save metadata to file" in the metadata menu in Library for the image you want to edit. Then Right (or control) click on it and from the popup select "Show in Finder/Explorer". Then a Finder (or Explorer) window will open where you can double click the RAW file (if you have set up Photoshop as the default editor for them), or you can drag the RAW file on Photoshop. ACR will open and you can do any edit you want. If editing the point curve is all you wanted, click on "Done". Now go back to Lightroom and for the image, select "read metadata from file" from the metadata menu. Lightroom will read in the new recipe in the xmp sidecar and update your image, including the point curve! You can only not edit it in Lightroom, but it will use it just fine.

  • Adobe Bridge in Photoshop - How to install Bridge and camera raw? And what is it all about?

Hi everyone! I am actually in love with this adobe photoshop. I used PSCS2 before, but later on upgraded to CS4. But I feel tired in upgrading to CS5.
One time, I found a tutorial in youtube about camera raw, and would really want to use it. But I was wondering how to install the camera raw. I believe camera raw is a plugin? so I downloaded the plugin here, installed it in my PS. I downloaded a file Camera Raw.8bi and paste it on my C drive - C:\Program Files\Adobe\Photoshop CS4\Plug-ins\File Formats.
I now am very confused, how will I open it? I do not have adobe bridge!  After I installed the camera raw, I opened my PS. I clicked the file>then browse in bridge. I had an error, it's "error 2 photoshop11 undefined". Which is what I thought, I might have done something wrong with installing it.
My question is, do you still need adobe bridge installed in order to use camera raw?
If yes, how does it work? How am I suppose to open camera raw?
If no, how am I going to open camera raw without bridge?
And also, where will I download adobe bridge? I cannot find one here for CS4, only adobe bridge for CS5. I am wondering, is it okay to install adobe bridge CS5 and use it with my PS CS4?
    I badly need help!

WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) is a set of extensions to HTTP/1.1.
The main difference from FTP as far as I can see is that it allows you to edit documents on a remote web server.
WebDAV was used by the Apple server - MobileMe but is not generally supported by hosting services.
Using WebDAV you can mount a directory locally. This was how iDisk worked on your Mac and you could drag files onto it to upload them to the remote directory.
With WebDAV, a number of users can share a directory which is why its used in local networks but presents security problems when using a remote server.
If you are into file sharing rather than publishing, Dropbox or its new rival SugarSync are more appropriate.

  • How do I install a Camera Raw update once it has downloaded?

I have downloaded the Camera Raw 6.7.1 update and I don't know how to actually install it now. The Adobe Application Manager stated that the application has been successfully updated and are ready for use. Where do I now find the file to install the update?

It should be installed already looking at your screen grab.  Go Photoshop > Help > About plugins > Camera RAW to see what version you have.
But updates did not always work well with CS5, so you might need to download the file maually, and place it in the right location.

This list has file locations for CS5, but I can't see Camera RAW for the Mac in the list

  • Can't select 'open in camera raw...' in Bridge

I have CS3 and I just recently updated my camera raw plug-in to 4.2.  Updates have allowed me to see my CR2 files (instead of an icon) ; which was a problem before.  But now I can't select the 'open in camera raw...' function in Bridge.  The function is still listed in my 'file' menu, however it's grayed out and cannot be selected.  I'm hoping this has something to do with a setting, or at least an easy fix.  Any help or guidance on this would be extremely helpful!  Thanks!

Camera Raw 4.2? The current version is 4.6.
If you can't access the Camera Raw command from Bridge with raw files, the odds are you didn't install it correctly...since you don't bother to state your OS, we can't really help you with WHERE to place Camera Raw (and only ONE version of Camera Raw) but you should go back and double check it's in the correct place for your OS.
