How to separate layer in layer palette using colour?

How can I separate the layer in layer palette using colour to increase the visualbility like the image below?

You could right click on the eye in the layer thumbnail
or from the layer panel flyout, select layer/group properties.

  • How Business service layer is useful?

    Hi All,
What advantage are we getting with Business Service Layer in ADF? Cant we have just simple model layer? Why there is a separate business layer? why it is not part of the model layer?
    Thanks.

Yet another homework question?  Again, go do some research.

  • Photoshop CC 2014 hangs for nearly 15 seconds when using Layer Group Layers or Layer Palette Group from Layers commands.

Photoshop hangs for nearly 15 seconds when using Layer > Group Layers or Layer Palette > Group from Layers commands. NOT on creating new group and creating layers and drag-n-dropping layers into group manually in Layer Palette. Got a UI design file with nearly 800 layers and lot of groups. This doesn't occur in smaller files. Using OS X Mavericks, Photoshop CC 2014.2.2, Mid 2014 15-inch Retina Macbook Pro.
I understand that the solution would be just to cut the file into smaller files and design each UI view in a separate file but that would be painful. And it does not seem to be a very hard task to just group layers.

Does the document also have a lot of layer comps?
And can you post that document or send me a copy of it so we can see exactly why it is hanging?

  • Healing Brush = Clone Stamp when used on separate layer?

I can't find corroboration on the web so I want to konw if anyone here has seen this - when using the Healing Brush tool in Normal mode, the opacity of the cloned pixels when painted onto the same layer as the source pixels will usually be decreased to blend better, BUT if the cloned pixels are painted onto a separate layer (to work non-destructively) the tool will NOT decrease opacity and the Healing Brush will work more like (if not exactly like) the Clone Stamp - true??

Hmm, It seems to be working differently for me now. Probably me being tired . I guess I'm just learning how it works. Here are some tests I just did. The top left is a cloned section using the Healing Brush with the "Current Layer" setting - looks identical to the original (even when not sitting on top of the original bg layer), and also looks just like the Clone Stamp (using either setting). The  bottom left is a cloned section using the Healing Brush with the "All Layers" setting – NOTICE THE BLENDED OPACITY (as one would expect it to work).
I guess this is the normal difference of the two different Healing Brush settings...?
I'm working in both CS5.1 and  CC (trial version). Thanks.

  • Missing Layer Palette - How I resolved it ;) ...... illustrator 10

    Hi all,
I had recently encountered a problem where I couldn't get the layer tool (F7) to show up. The "delete AI Pref" course of action didn't work for me. To cut the story short, this is what I did to get it working.
    # Search for *.aip in the system
    # Found "Layer Palette.aip" in C:\Program Files\Adobe\Illustrator 10\Support Files\Required
    # Made a copy of "Layer Palette.aip" to C:\Program Files\Adobe\Illustrator 10\Plug-ins\Extensions
    Good Luck!

PS. btw, this dinosaur is still using Illustrator 10. :D

  • Is there a way to shift select multiple objects in layer palette, not just highlight multiple object

    Hi,
Is there a way to shift select multiple objects in layer palette, not just highlight multiple objects?
I would want to do this when I have a bunch of objects hidden under some other objects on the artboard. This feature is available in PSD, so I assume Illustrator should have it.
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply, Harron.
    I'm using CS4 & below.
Highlighting object - click on object in layers palette & it turns blue
Select object - click on object in layers palette to the right of the circle, which creates a square, and selects the object on the artboard
How do I shift-select multiple objects in the layers palette...select 50 objects with a click, then a shift-click? Shift-select works for highlighting, but not selecting. On most programs shift-select is used to grab a bunch of stuff...:0)
In the past I have inadvertently selected multiple objects in the layers palette, by somehow alt?-dragging over the layers...or something...I can't re-create it.

  • Please bring color back to vector shapes in Layer Palette with no-thumbnails.

Please bring the color box back to vector shapes!
I am one not to use images in my layer palette, and in CS5 this was a breeze, but now the icons are different, there is no white box on the icons anymore (which really helps when scanning, and differentiating from folders), and I can't preview the color of the vector shape that I created in Photoshop. Vector shapes are a big part of my work. Before it would show a box with the color, now it shows nothing. The linking vector box is not neccesarily important as long as when I click it, the points become live.
Also the dividing lines for layers is not strong enough, doesn't have to be white, but at least gray. Black is definately not helping to divide the layers. And for nested layers, having the dividing line go half way to the edge really helps alot.
I noticed that a lot is different about the "no-thumbnails" version of the layer palette, and some I can live with, some changes I cannot. But being able to preview the color of a vector shapes is important for me, and seeing the white box behind the icon really helps when scaning a lot of layers. I've attached a comparison, also I have attached an image of how my layer palette looks on a daily basis from CS5 and CS6, I also opened the folder, and matched the palettes so you can see what I mean. Those little things really make a difference when scanning up and down 50-100 layers.
Even though setting the layer palette to no images may be a rarity among photoshop users, it's something that I value in photoshop, especially since my documents have hundreds of layers.

I think it was a fair assessment given the circumastances of the answer you provided, Jeanne. Also, another thing is that posting under an "employee" account, you are speaking for the company. You are representing the company whether it is your intention or not. Even if you explictly state that what you say is your personal opinion, people might have mixed feelings about what you say and mistake it for a belief that the whole company shares. So be careful with that, just as a note for the future.
But anyway, as for the issue at hand... That still doesn't give us anything other than "we won't do it." And again, I advise you to look through the post I referenced to. There are some very easy solutions there that help make the layers palette much easier to scan and work with. It's not too difficult to fix this and as already said above, you're already working on a fix for the thumbnails themselves anyway.
The solution to this problem could be as easy as this (I can provide another graphic for the darker UI settings, if you want):
    What you do is:
Display a bigger thumbnail of the layer icon (yes, that will use up more space in the no-thumbnail view, but that's not a huge problem compared to what you have now)
Clearly display the content of the layer (in this case, both layers are gradients, but it could also just have a solid color fill)
Lighten the color of unselected layer's names (to make the properties of the layer itself stand out better),
Make the layer thumbnail itself (if it's a vector layer) toggle the path outline on and off and
Bring back the separation line from CS5, which indicated the layer's position in the grouping hierarchy.
If you do that, you've already solved quite a lot of the scannability and readability problems. In the future, you could improve the iconography to be better optimized for quick scanning, to make them stand out better (give them more depth) and so on, but for now, this should be enough to make things better for most people. And also, this will not take up too much development time. You've already got the logic of the separation lines from CS5, for example. Shouldn't be too much of a problem to implement in CS6. I'm not going to speak for the other things, because I don't know too much of the internal workings of the program, but it shouldn't be too much of an issue.
Trust me, this change will make a world of difference. People will love this even if they don't understand that it's there or why they love it.
Would you like me to provide detailed wireframes and documentation, so your designers don't have to worry their heads about this one? Just asking, because this is a change that should really be pushed through, no matter what.
    Cheers,
    Riho Kroll

  • Grayscaled image , posterised, each level onto separate layer

I am a photorealistic graphite artist and use photoshop to turn colour photos into b&w. Then I often posterize the drawing to get a better understanding of the facial shapes as expressed in their different tonal values. I would like to have each posterised value on a separate layer in the correct grayscale value.
How can I achieve that. My literature, and my searching the web, did not turn out the answer, hence my 'call for help here'. Thanks for taking an interest.

I can't think of an automatic way.
Here is what I would do:
Include a small Black to White gradient in each image before posterizing.
After posterizing, set your Magic Wand Tool to zero tolerance and uncheck Contiguous.
Now click on a tonal value in your B-W gradient with the Magic Wand and go Layer>Layer via Copy (Cmd+J shortcut).
Do the same process for each value in your gradient (remember to target your background layer each time before selecting with the Magic Wand Tool).

  • Layer Palette disappeared

I have been using PhotoShop Elements 2.0 for several years.   Today while I was working on a project involving manipulating several layers my Layer Palette disappeared!   I had been working on the project for about an hour and the layer Palette had been in its customary place the whole time.
Does anyone out there know how I can get it back?
I tried restarting my computer a couple of times and even reinstalled the PhotoShop software, but the Layer Palette remains absent!

You can try Window>Layers or Window>Reset Palette Locations.
If that doesn't work, try resetting the pse2 preferences by holding down
the keyboard keys: Shft+Alt+Ctrl at same time as you start pse2 and then click ok in
    dialog that appears.

  • Can I change what layer is used to name a Smart Object?

I really love smart objects, and in particular I appreciate being able to combine a layer and its adjustment layers into a single smart object. However, when I create smart objects from multiple layers this way, I end up with names like "Hue/Saturation 31" and "Curves 16". Is there a way to set Photoshop to name the smart objects based on the primary layer, so I don't lose the layer names that actually indicate what's in the smart object?
For example, I do a lot of editing and combining groups of "selfies" that people send me. Once I extract them from their backgrounds, I bring them into a single file, with each "selfie" named with the name of the person pictured. So, for example, I'd have a Jane Doe layer, a John Smith layer, etc. Then I add adjustment layers to each one, to match their exposure and color as much as possible. Then, if any of the adjustment layers are not applied evenly to the entire smart object, I combine the smart object and its adjustment layers into a new smart object, so I can move and scale it easily without messing up the alignment of the combined layers. However, then I have to go back to the original files to know who is who.
Smart objects work much better than linked layers, but all the extra steps necessary to re-name them are driving me nuts. Does anyone have a solution?
    Paula

When I know i'll be transforming or adding additional filters, I prefer to go directly to creating smart objects rather than grouping them first, since the relevant layers are automatically "grouped" by being pulled into the smart object. My thought is that the default name for a smart object (or a group, for that matter) should be the lowest layer on the selected stack that has a non-default name, since in most cases that's the one you'd want to use for the new smart object. I don't know exactly how Photoshop recognizes layer names, but since it knows what number to assign to new layers or individual types of adjustment layers, it should also be able to recognize when a layer name is not a default name.

  • Recording what's on screen in CS5 on a separate layer?

Is there any way to record a Photoshop maneuver like airbrushing onto an otherwise transparent layer so the end result is an animation?
The real world equivalent of what I'm trying to do would be to have a video camera behind glass and a spray can spraying the glass from the other side.
I know there are programs that record what's on screen but I don't think they allow you to have a transparent layer. I may be able to use one of those programs and key out the non airbrush background.
I'd like to be able to import the animation into Premiere so it looks like paint has been sprayed over whatever clip is underneath the airbrushing frames.

add empty layer spray add empty layer spray add empty layer spray add empty layer spray add empty layer spray add empty layer spray add empty layer spray add empty layer spray add empty layer spray etc. then open animation palette use its fly-out menu make frams from layer. You can adjust the frames using the animation palette panel and the layers palett to accumilate each spray stroke to build up the coverage.   Save animation as a Animated GIF or a sequence of images. I do not to video so I do not know what file types Adobe Premere can import as animation Photoshop can save for web and can also export sone video file types.

  • How to get "Layer Mask Hides Effects" from Photoshop Plug-in

How to get "Layer Mask Hides Effects" from Photoshop Plug-in.

I don't think there's enough information here to give an answer.  Is this a Plug-in that you're writing or intend to write?  If so, what type of Plug-in is it?
If you are writing your own plug-in, the header files included in the Photoshop SDK/API have a bunch of defines for the proper codes to use.
PITerminology.h has a large amount of keys that can be used to query for information.  PIUGetInfo is probably the function that you want to call to determine what you need to know.
If you're looking for information about a specific layer, you will want to make a new PIActionDescriptor, call sPSActionDescriptor->Make(*PIActionDescriptor), and then call GetLayerInfo on the layer that you're querying information about.
You can then call sPSActionDescriptor->Get<datatype> on the layer while passing in the key of the data that you want.

  • Layer palette not maintaining state, what to do??

Problem: Layer palette chages state between the closing and reopening of a file.
What I would like to be able to do is open a .ai file and have the layer palette exactly the way the way I left it when I closed the file. Currently upon reopening a file many of the layers will be fully expanded and I have to go through and collapse them all.
Is there a way to force Illustrator to maintain layer palette state between file sessions?
    Thanks.

The behaviour - or the issue - has been introduced in Illustrator 9, the first version which included nested layers. The behaviour has been legitimately criticised pretty often.
However, if you want to collapse/expand all layers in one step you might consider converting your main layers into sublayers. That is:
    • Create a new 'master layer' on top of the entire stack of main layers
    • Drag all main layers onto the master layer in order to make them sub layers of the master layer
    • Now you can Alt/Option Click the triangle on the left-hand side of the master layer in order to collapse or expand all sublayers
Of course, this way is only applicable if using sublayers is an option for you.

  • Remember Layer palette 'panel settings-'?

Is there a way to keep my layer palette settings to my liking? Every new document I create starts me out with tiny icons and each object has its own sub-layer.
I like 64 pixel icons, top layers only. (Top layers only make it easier to work with After Effects)

Layer attributes are part of a documents attributes. The great thing about this is it's actually really easy to make it so every new document you open has the attributes you want. There are two ways of doing this. By modifying or creating new document startup profiles, or by creating custom template files and opening new documents from these. I recommend going the route of template files as they are more flexible, you can save them wherever you like. Here is an article with more info about using them:
