How to set file opening preference in OS 10.5

I have around 1500 Census files which are JPEGS, and they opened nicely with Preview. Today, I loaded most of iLife (iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD and iWeb). Now, for some reason, every one of those files wants to be opened with Adobe Illustrator which is far from optimal for viewing them. Preview is not even recognized now by the operating system as a means of opening JPEGS, and it refuses to open them even though it is open and running.
Is it possible somewhere in the operating system to specify what piece of software has a preference to open a certain type of file? All of those files which once has as their opening preference Preview have now been converted to Adobe Illustrator.

Kappy, that did not work. I did a Google search on the subject and learned about an app called RCDefaultApp. I downloaded that and placed it in my Library file as directed. I then closed System Preferences and reopened it. The app showed up on the far left of the "Other" line of System Preferences.
This let me set default apps for each "extension." Sure enough, Illustrator was set to open jpeg, jpg, JPG, JPEG and PNG files. I changed all of them to Preview. Well, it still didn't work. Even though Preview was open and actually allowing me to view one of these files, it would not let me open another one of them.
About ready to tear my hair out, I decided if all else fails restart the computer. That fixed the problem. It appears the opening preferences got returned to their original values. The files now open with Preview.
Interestingly, when I started installing iLife, there was a warning that I would have to restart my computer when the software was loaded. I omitted GarageBand which I don't need. There was never any alert that the software was loaded and I should restart my computer. So, I didn't. Maybe some corruption crept in as a result.
While at it, I also went into Finder preferences and checked the block under Advanced to show all extensions. Quite a few of those census files had none, and they do now.
Preview is working now and is opening all those files. I also tried two small PNGs which I trashed because they would not open, and they work, too. Happiness!!

It seems like the most natural way to do that would be with database triggers, if your DB allows its triggers to interact with the world outside the DB--e.g. invoking Java code, invoking some other process, opening a socket, etc.

I'm pretty sure higher access superceedes, so you could set up a group with no actual access, just to get the preferences working, then their individual security will dictate what they can do. I haven't tested this fully, but I beleive this is how it will work. As far as setting the preferences, go into the admin console and right click on the group, then select Preferences. To apply the group preferences to a user, add the user to the group, then right click on the user, select preferences and from the upper left corner, use the drop down to select the active preference, in this case, it will be the group you created and added them to. Bridge keeps opening my .png screen shot files with Fireworks, I want them to open in Photoshop — CS4.
The .png file icons defaults are set to open with Ps.
Bridge> Preferences> File Type Associations don't even list .png (if that is the place to do it).

Same issue - when I double click a "RW2" file in Bridge my Photomatix application opens the file. Nowhere in the file associations do I see Photomatix or the "RW2" file format for that matter. I reset to default association - still no joy. The only app showing in the "Open With" pull down in Bridge is "Photomatix (default)". How so I change this default to PS4?

In Bridge CS3, how does one edit the list of applications in the File > Open With menu (also available from the contextual menu for any image).
The list contains a number of applications that I would never use to open an image, and I would like to add to it, a new image editor (pixelmator) that does not appear in it. I have looked in the Bridge Help and the Preferences dialog and don't see any option to do this.

OK, I have now learned that Mac OS keeps the list of which apps to open what, in the "launch services database."
This database can be cleaned up and reset which somewhat simplifies the list that is displayed by the Finder OR by Bridge CS3.

Even after rebuilding the launchdb, I find that a large number of apps are "registered" to open JPG files, including Camino, Opera, TextWrangler and others with only a tenuous connection to JPG. I don't understand why this is, and I would still like to find a way to limit the JPG Open-With list to a few graphics programs. But cleaning up the launchdb as described in the linked pages, did get rid of some programs and added some missing ones.

How do you set a *file type* to open with a specific application?
I can see how to set *individual documents* to open with a specific app, but not file types.
For example, "soundeffect.aif" opens with iTunes by default. By right-clicking and selecting Open With > Other, I can make ONLY "soundeffect.aif" open with another app (like Quicktime Player) by default. How can I globally set ALL aiff files to open with another app by default?

Select the file, CMD+I, set the open with to your choice and then click on the Change All button. Do note that means all aif files will open with that choice.

In OB52 you need to manage open periods related to FI. Any periods which are not managed here implies those periods are closed
Ex: From Period Year To Period Year
04 2008 04 20008
This means 4th Period of 2008 is open and all other periods are closed.
Also you can open and close period seperately for General Ledger and Subledgers
Types A,D,K,M are subledgers and S type is for ledger.
There will be seperate open and close periods for FI,MM and CO modules
FI- OB52
CO-OKP1
MM- MMPV

client-server-functionality has gone. web-functionality is new.
Install the new webutil-toolset from oracle and use the new file-open-dialog from the webutil.pll. That's the way you work in the new 10g-environment.

How to Set File Handling on LIghtroom CC??

I was watching a you tube on Lightroom CC and the person is using a mac - I am on WIndows. The insructor selected the words "lightroom" to the left of "File" to get to catalogue settins. I don't see that option so that I can set file handling etc for preview size etc. I have already updated from my LR5 catalogue. So, how do I nagivate to these options and also how to navigate to set program to use my vidoe card for faster performance. Thank you.

Set File Open dialog path in Acrobat

Hi forum,
Is there a way to set the path for the File Open dialog that shows in Acrobat?
The situation I have is that the navigation up and down folders to Watermarks and files to be inserted is a painful process.
I would like to add buttons to the add-on toolbar that set the File Open dialog path to predefined folders, however after reviewing the Javascript guide it looks like this simple task is not possible, or exposed by the API.
Could someone please confirm if this is possible or not?

How to set the portlet preference per user instead of global setting

I am using IBM JSR168/ JSF, In my portlet Edit mode I am trying to set a value per user preference , but it always set for all other users even this is just a normal user, I think when an administrator set any preference value then those preferences value will be set for all the users. but in my case it is a normal user has right for the edit mode and hence the preference set by the user in edit mode will be set for his portlet instance only. So why it sets for all the users preference???...... Thanks a lot for your help!!!

How to set file mappings???

i want to know is there a site somewhere on the net with a list of correct settings for each file so i can fix the blank icon's on some files and some files like some stuffit files have a quick time icon and some have a blank icon and very fiew have the correct icon. ive alway's had this problem even with new install's of OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2. there is a few app's like guage pro that uses a generic app icon but still works

This sounds horrible to use. We can feel your pain using a system like this.
When was the last time you rebuilt the desktop (hold down Cmd-Cntl-Option), either at startup (as soon as the Finder menu bar appears), or immediately after Cmd-Cntl-Esc'ing the OS9 Finder (doing it at startup preferred) ??
I don't know of anywhere on the web that has this info. I suspect Apple used to have a substantial list of File Type / Creator codes, but I never found them on the web, maybe in the developer site.
There are to other possible solutions (apart from rebuilding your desktop, which I think is all you need to do):
There is a substantial list of codes in the Internet Explorer download file helper preference. These won't be instantly usable, but it will show for example, .xls should be created with a creator / type of MSXL/EXCL (or something similar) and that this relates to Microsoft Excel. While the .xls bit is useless to you, the creator/type code and application name are wat you want.
Or, with ResEdit, you could check the BNDL resource of each Application on your Mac. This can be scary and dangerous to your applications if you're not used to ResEdit.

How to Set "file.encoding" System Property to default "UTF-8"

When i execute my code some special character are not being display correct so by programming approach i am trying to set "file.encoding" system property to "UTF-8", using command System.setProperty( "file.encoding", "UTF-8" ); and it is not working.
If i run my jar using command java -Dfile.encoding=UTF-8 -jar myprog.jar . It is working and my special characters are also looking in right way.
Can i set this defalut encoding by programming approach.

I have the same problem. I have a java prog that is started with "-Dfile.encoding=ISO-8859-1". Now in this program I want to print some characters using the UTF-8 encoding because I know that the terminal I will be printing on has this encoding. I tried using InputStramReader without success:

How to set file permissions for SFTP uploaded file?

Hello,
is it possible to set file permissions with the SDK for files uploaded via SFTP transfer? I use the default sample plugin ftp_upload.lrdevplugin to transfer the files, but would like to tweak it to set the uploaded file(s) to permission 644 (rw-,r--,r--) on Linux server. Currently the server sets new file(s) by default to 600 (rw-,---,---).
I am looking for an option to do the "chmod" directly from Lightroom without doing any modificatios in general to default umask, etc. settings on the server. No real UI is needed for this. Just hardcoded setting for 644 in the .lua.
So far I've been unsuccesful in finding the way. Googled, read this forum, looked at the API. Maybe I just missed it, or does this functionality exist?
