How to set target volume in migration assistent

Dear all,
Just received my new iMac, with hard disk and SSD. I messed up the permissions in the transfer process on my old iMac. So I can't access my old Imac, even in target disk mode (using pressing T on startup). The migration assistent however does have access so this helped me lot. But.... since the SSD is only 256GB, and this is were the migration assistent places the data, the bigger portions like the iTunes library cannoot be moved. I would like to tell the migration assistant to put the data to the HD. Anyone an idea how?
Or how to repair the permissions on the old iMac? Please note that due to the permissions issue, it doesn't boot anymore, only in target disk mode.

First off forget Migration Assistant.
Second, your new iMac has a hard drive and a SSD.
On the SSD you want OS X and programs installed from fresh sources.
There will be home user folders like Document, Music and Pictures on the SSD. You don't want to use these or as little as possible. But the bulk of your files on the hard drive in new folders.
You'll have to do this manually while the old iMac is booted in Target Disk Mode.
Also your old iMac isn't dead, it's just the OS that is hosed, you don't want Migration Assisitant transfering any of that hosed stuff to your new machine.
You can use Disk Utility located in your Applicaitons > Utlilites folder to repair permisisons on the old iMac while it's T booted in Target Disk Mode.
I wouldn't do anyhting until you got your files off.
You can also hold c and boot off the installer disk that came with the old iMac to use Disk Utility on that (under the Utilities menu) to Erase and reformat the old iMac's hard drive (format HFS+ Journaled) and then Quit and reinstall OS X fresh. (warning all data will be gone)

How many times can I use Migration Assistant?

Hello All,
I am planning on buying an Intel i7 iMac in the near future, and I want to take some of the files from my old Core Duo computer and move them to the i7 iMac. I'm not throwing out the Core Duo iMac, I just want some of the files on the new i7, but I don't want to clutter it up with files I don't need to move. How many times am I allowed to run Migration Assistant? Suppose one day I just want to bring over my iTunes 7 library, and my email accounts but I don't need anything else on the first day. Is it ok to just migrate those couple of things in one session and migrate other things in another session? It seems like that's how it will work but I don't know for sure.

This was posted from my Core Duo running OS X 10.4.11. I want to use the i7 as my main computer but still use this one (Core Duo) in another room on my WiFi network. The i7 will be taking all new emails.

That's what I did on all my other Macs as I got them. I just decided to upgrade the memory in my old slow core duo iMac to 2 Gigs and I bought the box set. So far I installed 10.6. It works but just as slowly as before, which I think is it's normal speed. But now I have the option of turning Rosetta on and off.
Now I can wait for Lion and the second generation i7 iMac to be released and be up to date on my Core Duo iMac. I'll be back when I get to migrating to a new iMac, or maybe before.

How to set target to Play button on begining DVD

Man you dont use this program for a few months and you gotta take a course on it all over again.
Ive completely forgotten how to set the PLAY button to activate at the beginning of the DVD. As in I was burning several DVDs and I tested them on my computer, and they worked fine. But the whole time I was using my mouse to navigate (I only put in one button "PLAY"). When at one point I happened to use the DVD navigator I realized I hadnt set it for a stand alone. So while if you watched it on a computer and were using your mouse you could hit the play button. But on a stand alone you cant get to it with a remote.
I remember it being a simply thing, but for the life of me I cant figure it out. HELP!

So are you talking about moving between the buttons on a menu screen (i.e. navigation in the menu) or are you saying you can't get the button to activate any video? Or both?
The first issue is sorted out with the 'Settings' drop down box and choosing 'assign buttons now' or 'auto assign buttons' (but this slows down the menu creation and gets really frustrating at times). You should then be able to get to the menu (which will have the first button highlighted and ready by default) and then use the handset to move from button to button.
The second bit is setting the target for the button - where it goes to once you select and activate it. Open up your menu in DVDSP and click on the buttons in turn. Look in the property inspector for the 'target' and make sure that each button is going where you intend.
Alternatively, use the connections tab - this is far faster, IMO, but is slightly more abstract in concept...
If you have done these things and you still cannot get to the button using the remote control then there is something else wrong - it could be that you simply forgot to create a button but have the text there ready... without the button rectangle being drawn out over the text (or next to it) there will be no button and no way to activate anything.

TS1963 How long do I waiting for Migration Assistant?

I have had the hard drive crash on my iMac and Apple Care support helped me to get the Migration Assistant to start to recover lost data of the hard disc. It has been going for 7 hours so far and the MA window still says "Looking for applications and documents to transfer..." How long should I waiting?

if Disk Utility or fsck should fail to repair it, your best bet is DiskWarrior from Alsoft, you'll need the CD to boot from if you don't have another boot drive...

I did, andd while that did help to center the image on the page, now all my measurements are coming out about 4 times too small. I'm also worried that changing the resolution might cause the image to lose some data due to resizing.
What exactly does changing the resolution do? Why does this center things? How can I calculate points so that they exactly touch the edge of the document?

HT204350 How do I know if the migration assistant is actually working? I got as far as a screen that says it is "Transferring your information" and there is what looks like a progress bar but that has moving blue diagonal lines rather than any progress

The fan on my target computer is whirring away and so it sounds like something is happening. But there doesnt seem to be any way of telling from either the traget or the source computer if the thing is actually working. How many hours should I wait before concluding that something has gone wrong? I have over 100GB of data so I am not expecting it to be fast!
Is it normal for the source computer to just drop out of migration asssistant at the begining, or should there be some sort of indication that it is working? What about if I use activity monitor is there any clues I should be looking for there?

How to set my volume keys to change volume rather than activating narrator

is there a setting that i can change so that the narrator won't automatically activate when i press the volume button? i'm having windows 8 and i'm not used to it. i'm really getting annoyed that everytime i'm supposed to change the volume it suddenly

If this just happened recently, this might be caused by some other applications, which result in keys conflict.
In this case, I suggest to remove the applications to see the result.

How to set input volume - currently very low results

Hi there, I hope someone very kind and patient reads this and comes to my rescue.
I am a singer / songwriter and am trying to set my laptop up so I can make simple recordings of my ideas. I therefore want to input vocals and guitar. I currently have a SM-68 dynamic mic but am thinking of getting a Samson G-Track condenser mic which is USB and has a built in audio interface so that a guitar may also be plugged in.
I have gone into Sound Preferences and selected line-in.
Rigged up my mic using a cable bought at the Apple store.
However there is very little volume on the resulting recording.
I have turned everything up to the maximum but this has made no difference.
I wanted to keep the set up simple (and am on a tight budget) so I haven't got an audio interface.
Could anyone talk me through the best way to set up - I am not very technical so can you avoid jargon as my poor brain may overload.
If anyone has any info on the G-Track I would be grateful for any feedback. I am told that you can plug a guitar into it as it contains an audio interface.
My fingers are crossed that my knight in shining armour with give me some sound advice.

We're sorry, but this isn't supported. One rationale is that it's not generally sufficient to simply reload the target page; you also have to reload the tab control itself to show the new selection. We generally recommend not using frames in this circumstance, instead putting the menuTabs and the content on one page.
(BTW, "target" isn't really supported on <h:commandLink> either)

TM Backup Volume after restoring with Migration Assistant

I recently restored my system from a time machine volume via migration assistant (NOT while first boot, because it hangs on caluculating amount of space there) to be able to use Boot Camp (my partition seemed to be too much fragmented). There are a whole bunch of files in older backups I still need. Therefor I need to know for sure if I can choose the external HDD with the old Backups as the new TM Backup Volume WITHOUT loosing my old backups.
I haven't found satisfying information about it in this forum but of course it is possible that I've overlooked it.
What do you think about it?

*Accessing Time Machine Backups From Another User Account or Computer*
Yes, you can do this using the Time Machine interface.
Attach the drive containing the TM backups to your computer.
Control-click the TM icon in the dock and select "Browse Other Time Machine Disks...".
Highlight the desired disk and click “Use Selected Disk”. This will now allow you to browse those TM backups via the ‘time travel’ window. From here you can restore what files you need access to. Bear in mind that any files moved will have the permissions of that previous user account. Thus you may be prompted for the user name and password of that previous account. However, once verified you should be able to adjust “Sharing & Permissions” in the files “Get Info” window.

New imac 1.8ghz intel Old g4 10.2.8 migration assistant palm5.2.8 isync

I am awaiting my new imac 17". I was told by the mac store that i can transferr my user accounts, itunes, etc. via target mode and migration assistant. I have been reading as much as i can find about this, but this brings up more questions than answers.
I read that i should only sync my palm on one machine. i want to sync it with the new imac, but read that the migration assistant will not transfer this info. is this true
what is the best way to sync my old palm with my new imac without loosing all my old data? I also use eprocates with my palm which is another program. as is with my old g4 computer it works ok. I am afraid what complications lay ahead.

What they have said is correct to some degree, but not completely.
The primary purpose of the migration assistant is to user user data to your new environment. To insure that your user data—which includes contact, calendaring and task data used by the Address Book and iCal and synchronized using iSync—is transfered properly to your new machine, you should use the migration process with your source disk in FireWire target mode.
But you should also do this: depending upon which specific Palm organizer or smartphone you are using, you should install the Palm Desktop on your new machine using the package on the CD-ROM bundled with your device, then update it with the downloadable 4.2.1 revision D package if that package is later than or equal to the bundled package. Once you've installed the Palm Desktop on your new machine, you should launch iSync and add your device to it using the Enable Palm OS Syncing… option in that application.
Do not synchronize until you have performed the migration of your user data, opened the Address Book and iCal to insure that your records appear there and are complete and contemporary, have backed up both records types using the built-in Back up… option under the file menu of each application, have installed and updated the Palm Desktop, and have added your device to iSync. When you first synchronize on the new machine, you should choose to overwrite [or replace, in iSync terminology] the records on your Palm device. Do not merge the records during this initial synchronization on your new machine.
ePocrates is a more complex issue. Users have had recurring difficulty synchronizing this application in the OS X environment. This note below explains why you should investigate using the Missing Sync for Palm OS instead of either the Palm Desktop or iSync to synchronize your device:

Customers report that using the Internet Sharing feature to bypass the ePocrates conduit and sync directly with ePocrates produces better and more consistent results.
Requirements for this bypass to work:
• ePocrates already installed on your handheld
• the Missing Sync for Palm OS 4.0.2, or higher [currently 5.1]
• a Palm device in its cradle, connected to your Mac via USB [Bluetooth optional]*
To sync with ePocrates, do the following:
1. Connect your device via USB to your Mac
2. Set up Internet Sharing on your device (refer to the Internet Sharing Assistant from the Help menu for setup information
3. Tap on the "AutoUpdate" application that was installed with ePocrates
4. In the ePocrates main display window you should see the following information :
Server : ePocrates Server
Server Addr : sync6.epocrates.com
Port : 80
User Name : <enter your name here>

5. Tap the Sync button in the ePocrates AutoUpdate application

If you let me know which Palm device you will be using, I can give you more specific instructions than those generally outlined above regarding the Palm Desktop. It's critical to install the package, as iSync requires the HotSync Manager and Transport Monitor to be installed to perform the synchronization of Palm devices.
