How to set up a zoom usb modem

I don't have access to ANY high speed internet and am solely on dial-up.  New computers do not have an internal modem and I had to purchase a Zoom Modem  56k v.92/v.90 for my 13" macbook pro.  Can't get it to work.
I went to the Apple store and was informed that Apple does not make modems anymore since "everyone" has high speed internet now.---- well evidently everyone but me.  Got a Zoom modem.
Now, how do I get it to work?  The place where I purchased the computer does not have a dial-up area where they can help me get it working.
I plugged it in, filled out the information and it doesn't work.  Cannot connect.  I need step by step instructions for the techie impaired.
Just to register with Apple and write this I have to sit a Dennys' Restaurant where there's wifi.

Contact Zoom directly. Their support page for Mac users is at http://www.zoomtel.com/techsupport/dial_up/298x.shtml.

  • How do you set up the stupid USB modem to send faxes?

Just bought the stupid USB modem because my new G5 is so new and improved that it doesn't have a modem like my old G4. Naturally I was so pleased to spend extra money that I hastened to order a brand new USB modem from Apple. Aren't they smart? Eliminate minor product features and then sell them separately to gullible users.
Well Apple's even smarter than I thought, because not only did they not include the modem on the new G5, the 'manual' doesn't actually tell you how to use it to send faxes. That guarantees you'll go to their website and maybe even buy more stuff.
So, has anybody out there actually figured out how to make an Apple product work in spite of itself, or do I have to go to my local business store and buy a fax machine?
    PowerBook G5   Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Yes, I did what the manual said
When I phone my fax line, I hear the fax squeal produced by the Mac, so I could get incoming faxes, but the modem isn't recognized as a printer so I can't send out faxes. Manual explains how to dial out, but seems to be talking about how to connnect to the Internet with a dial-up modem.
Since you don't say what specific problem you are
    having,
Have you gone to System Preferences > Print & Faxing
Faxing> Set Up Fax Modem yet?
Have you looked at "Mac OS Help" type Fax in search
box - lots of info there.
    Hope this helps

  • How do I share a 3G USB modem connected to my Macbook Pro with my Airport Express?

Hi. I have a 3g USB modem connected to my macbook pro, and I want to try share the signal with my Airport Express (latest model).
Now before everybody screams that it can't be done, I was searching the forums and found a discussion in which someone describes how to do it from 2008, unfortunately it is archived and I couldn't ask the author directly, and the description doesn't go into much detail.
In the thread, the author describes turning internet sharing on to share the USB modem, creating a network on the macbook, then renaming the Airport Express network name the same as the macbook, and setting the AX to Join a Network.
Problem being there is no description of whether the macbook connected to the AX via ethernet or wifi, what settings were changed on the AX eg bridge mode.
Is this possible in theory, and has anybody had any success sharing a 3g USB modem via a macbook pro to an AX? I know there are other options like getting 3g ethernet modems, unfortunately not an option in this case - new house, waiting for DSL to be installed, 2-3 month wait.
    Thanks

Well, you cannot use the 3G USB modem plugged directly into the Express. However, you can configure your MacBook Pro to do 'Internet sharing' (SysPrefs>Sharing) over the Ethernet port, and then connect your Express into the Ethernet port. Alternatively, you could always get your MacBook to 'create a wireless network'.
new house, waiting for DSL to be installed, 2-3 month wait.
You could always look for open WiFi networks to *cough*borrow*cough* .

    Hi,
Listed below is the step by step intructions to configure the Nokia device as a modem to a mac.
    Steps:
Connecting your Mac to the internet is convenient and easy with your a compatible Nokia S60 device. You'll need a Nokia S60 device that supports a 2G or 3G data connection (such as GPRS or HSDPA), a compatible Mac (with the latest OS X), a USB cable for your Nokia device or a Bluetooth-enabled Mac, and a network subscription with your mobile service provider.
To set up your device you'll need to know your operator's Access Point Name (APN) and have the packet data service enabled. For help with this please contact your operator.
In Settings select and open Connection >Select and open Packet data > Select and open Access point >Type in your operator's Access Point Name
Exit Settings. Your device is now ready to be used as a modem for your Mac!
Bluetooth Connection: Pairing between Mac and Device using bluetooth, follow the instruction from here: http://europe.nokia.com/get-support-and-software/download-software/device-as-a-modem/connect-to-your...
Note: Preferred mode is USB as it much faster than Bluetooth.
Connect the device and then go to System preferences- >Network- >Select Device (Nokia XXX)
Click on Advanced Tab > Modem tab
    - Vendor : Nokia
    -Model:GPRS (GSM/3G)
-Telephone Number: *99***1# (contact your operator to get this settings)
-APN: airtelgprs.com (contact your operator to get this settings)
    CID: 1
Once connected it will be highlighted in green.
    Hopefully this helps.
    Cheers
    Sandy

  • How can I use 2 3g usb modems to increase internet speed (connection bonding)?

I live in Bolivia, which if you don't know has the worst internet on planet earth.. i.e. poorest reliability, availability, speed, most expensive, etc..
I currently have a couple of 4g usb modems (which have speeds way slower than 3g.. we're talking 1-200 kbs = ( )... I'm thinking I can probably bond them, or do somekind of proxy thing so that I can browse the web across both of the dongles.. I know that will not equal 2 times the speed.. but anything would help..
Hoping someone here has some ideas.
The modems are both HUWEI and I can connect them via the network preferences pane.
I know this is possible on ubuntu, but I don't really want to set up a linux server virtual or otherwise if I can avoid it.
    Many thanks,
    George

  • How do I securely eject vodafone USB modem in Yosimite?

    Hi Guys,
Every time I try to safely remove the usb modem , my system comes up with an warning message that the disk was removed without shutting down first and the restarts the Macbook ... this is freakin anoying.
I do go to the Vodafone software and close everything and also quit the application but still does it ..

Try going to 'Finder'. You should see something like 'Vodafone USB modem' or 'USB modem' under the 'Devices' tab on the left hand side of the 'Finder' window. There should be an icon next to it, that allows you to eject it. If not, right click or tap with two fingers on it (if you enabled the feature) and you should be able to eject it. If not, well... I can't help very much then.

  • How to set the default zoom of browser to lowervalue(say 50% of present zoom) through prefs.js?

    Hi,
I want to reduce the browser zoom level to a lower value so that i could see the whole of webpage through prefs.js as its for a test automation.
I just wanted to see whole page on the browser.
Can any help me with what this can be achieved?

These are the three preferences which are related to '''zoom''' in about:config - changed values in about:config are written to the prefs.js file. <br />
    toolkit.zoomManager.zoomValues <br />
    zoom.maxPercent <br />
    zoom.minPercent
I don't think zoom works directly thru the prefs.js file, though.
I suggest you look at the Mozilla Developer Network articles for help with what you want to achieve, starting with this: <br />

  • USB modems and 10.6

I recently tried to use a Zoom USB modem with my Macbook Pro, but it wouldn't appear in the network panel. am I only able to use Apple USB modems with this system, or can I use 3rd party modems?

Dialup, yes some still are limited to it, me included and believe me it *** big time.
I have a bit of experience with satellite, and it is not much better than dialup, yes sometimes it is faster, but not always.
If DSL was available where I live, I'd have it in a heartbeat, but sad to say AT&T does not seem to be interested in making it available in the 'hood.
Now, I went ahead and made the mistake of upgrading to snow leopard and my printer no longer functions.
Not a happy camper, but does apple care, I don't think so.

  • Apple USB Modem and VoIP

I've been trying to help a friend set-up an Apple USB modem with his MacBook Pro. He wants to have it as a back-up, in case he is somewhere without any other form of Internet access. I've been using Macs for a long time and thought this would be a no-brainer, but it hasn't. I get a dial-tone, I hear the attempted connection sounds, then nothing - "dial tone not detected", or something like that. Earthlink confirmed that the access numbers were correct, plus the phone works fine. I've tried 2 different USB modems. I realized that he is using VoIP for his home phone and that the line runs through a Linksys "Viatalk" router. Could that be the cause of the problem? Are modems "supposed" to work over VoIP systems?
    TIA

due to the various encoding and compression algorithms used, you typically cannot use a modem (including the modem built into fax machines) on most VoIP lines.
The VoIP connection is optimized to carry voice traffic and doesn't support the full signal range needed by modem communications.
You might try asking your VoIP provider for some assistance - some offer fax modem lines which may support modem transfers.
On the plus side I trust you are using this for testing only, right?
There's no point in using a modem as backup in case your main internet connection goes down because if your main line goes down, so does your VoIP connection - therefore you couldn't use the VoIP connection anyway.

  • Setting up my 4G LTE USB Modem, when attemping to connect recieving error VZW_NETWORK_ERROR_LTE_CO_OTHER? Can anyone explain how to correct setup.

I just purchase a 4G LTE USB modem to use with my laptop but having issue with the connecting being made. This is the error I am receiving. Can someone explain the process correctly.

Let us know which specific USB model you have.
Normally when someone receives a USB modem error there are only a few places to look for solutions.  First would be a reinstall of the connection software.  Always go out to VZW and check to see if there is a newer version when you have problems.  Even if there isn't a reinstall can clear up many temporary problems with these devices.
Your error mentions something about connecting to LTE.  Perhaps there is an issue with the authentication of your device.  It might be a good idea to contact VZW to make sure you are properly registered. You also might want to try connecting in a different location incase there is something wrong with your current environment.  Connecting to a different tower or in a different location may be able to work around the problem.

  • Set up Time capsule with USB modem

    HI
I'm relatively new to my mac & I just purchased a time capsule. I use a Verizon USB modem for internet and this has caused me some problems trying to set up the TC.
Is there anything any one can tell me to help? I could use some step by step help. The light is green, says I was successful but I can't print & have not even tried anything else. I just know my internet connection is wrong.....
    Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I was hoping I could set it up for remote printing & backup w/o using internet connection. No?
Although the Time Capsule (TC) could be configured a number of ways, having a USB modem will limit you somewhat. I am assuming that your modem is not wireless and that you connect your MacBook Pro directly for Internet access using an USB cable ... correct?
Since the modem doesn't have an Ethernet port, the only option you will have for the TC is to operate it as a wireless network ... basically its default configuration. You then have two choices on how to connect your MBP to the TC: by Ethernet or wirelessly.

  • How to set up TimeCapsule (4th) to create own private (wired) network behind Airport Express (5th) that is set up to join existing wifi-network of fritz adsl modem/router?

I work in an office building with free Wifi to connect to the Internet. I want to be able to use this internetconnection, but at the same time I want to shield of my own wired network.
    I've made the following configuration:
    - fritz adsl modem / router
    - Airport Extreme (5th gen) set up to join existing wireless network (green light, works)
    - Lan-cable from lan-port AE to wan-port TC (4th gen)
    - Lan-cable from TC to Mac
    - Lan-cable from TC to Printer
When I set my TC (network-settings) in bridge-mode everything works fine, but my Mac and Printer get an IP-address from the fritz modem / router and are visible to others.
I tried to set TC in NAT/DHCP-mode, but then I get the error message that I should set a static IP-adress for TC. When I set TC in DHCP-mode, it looses connection to the AE. I'm not sure what to do now. Does anyone know how to set up my TC and create my own private network and still be able to get on the internet?

    Hajenius wrote:
Is there a better alternative? I'd rather not want to reset my TC every day.
You are using free internet.. so there is a price to pay.. that is convenience and non-ideal network setup.
The better alternative is to pay for your own connection. Then you are completely free of the possibility of others in the bullding seeing your connection. (as long as you secure the wireless).
But I think you are probably over worrying about public wifi.. if it is setup right.. ask the building admins.. it should be setup so each user cannot see another users connection. This is typical for most wifi setup and simply means you can see internet connection but nobody else on the connection. ie other wireless users.
Having a router with NAT makes it then more secure again and allows clients on your own network to interact with each other. But you can setup wireless to the free wifi for every client.. (depending on how many IP you are allowed).. and run a secondary network without internet access. This is easy for desktop etc where you have a wireless and a wired connection but less convenient for mobile devices.. unless you use a cloud connection and each client can link and share via that.
Have I made the explanation worse??
Think of it this way.. if you had 3 laptops.. all 3 could connect to the internet from the building wifi.. but they cannot talk to each other or share resources in local office. You can put resources out in the cloud, that can be shared.. but that adds traffic and most free services are not fast.
Now you can also plug all three into Time Capsule by ethernet.. and share local resources. Files, printers backup etc. This network is not connected to the internet at all. Each laptop has internet via free wifi and local connection.
For devices like iphones that have no ethernet or other method.. you could use local wireless and public wireless.. but in turns.. still the only advantage is less issues with double NAT.. if that causes problems.. then this is an alternative.

  • How do I set the screen zoom, so that it doesnt change each time I open Firefox. Because I see the webpages in smaller print, and I want them larger , without having to re zoom each time I open Firefox.

I need to know how to set the zoom option under "View" Tab, shere I dont have to re zoom each time I open Firefox. I have a wide screen monitor and generally, when viewing webpages, the web content on any page is confined to center of the page, and I was wondering if there was anyway to permanently set the zoom preferences without having to change them each time i open a webpage.
IE 8 and 9 has a feature to set the magnification and i set mine to 150% which works perfectly for me. I wonder if Firefox has a similar feature.
