How to set up and configure AirPort Express for AirPlay and iTunes

Saw somewhere that supposedly there were some apple written guidlines on the above topic. I have searched all over for them. Anyone know where I can get a copy to read through. Just trying to educate myself a bit and sety up another room with access to itunes, radio, etc with high quality speakers and amp off my express.

  • How to set NAT Type in Airport Express for PS3

I just replaced my existing WiFi router with a Airport Express, using the same log in information, and all other devices includin iPhone and laptop can get on line w/o problem, but my PS3 can not seems to log in for on-line game, and when I check the internet connection settings, it show NAT type failed due to timeout error. I have read some articles about the need to change NAT Type from 3 to 2 or something like that, how can not find in Airport Utilities on how to open up NAT to change its type? anyone can help? Appreciate.

Unfortunately there are no specific NAT settings on the AirPort routers to change the NAT type. On the AirPorts you either have NAT enabled or disabled. Other options would be to use either a DMZ or open specific ports on the AirPort's NAT firewall to allow your PS3 to gain full access to  PS3's on-line gaming service.

  • Can't find how to set up wires modem, Airport Express, imac

My imac gets its internet using ethernet cable from cable modem (only one ethernet port out of it) to imac. Just bought airport express to send wireless signal to my house so kids can use wireless pc laptop. But want to keep my imac hard wired to internet. What cables do I need to plug in where?

If your new AirPort Express is a 2nd generation model, then you would just need another Ethernet cable and connect it between the base station's LAN (opposing arrows) port and your iMac.

  • Configuring Airport Express for travel

I have an extra Airport Express that I would like to use for wi-fi access when traveling and staying at hotels with wired access only. I travel a lot where I don't have to bring my MacBook and rely basically on my iPhone. I would like to know how to configure the AE properly at home before I leave so that it always works when I get to my destination.

The key to success here is to know, in advance, the network configuration of your destination ... not always an easy task.
Regardless, you will want to take advantage of configuration profiles.
The AirPort Express Base Station (AX) can store up to five different configuration profiles. You will need to use the AirPort Utility, located in Applications/Utilities to create & save these profiles.
    To create a new profile:
o Open AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
o From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
o Click "+" to create a new profile; give it a name, and then, click OK.
o Set options, such as network name, passwords, Internet connection method, etc.
o When done setting the options, click Update.
    To switch profiles:
o Open the AirPort Utility, select your AX from the list, and then, click "Manual Setup."
o From the AirPort Utility menu, select "Base Station," and then "Manage Profiles."
o Click on the desired profile, and then, click OK to apply the new profile and restart the AX.
Just remember to switch to the desired configuration profile before removing power from the AX.

  • How do I add a second Airport Express for Airtunes only?

I already have one Airport Express hooked up to my G5 for wireless internet. Works just fine. How, in simple english, do I add a second Airport Express to my downstairs stereo fot playing my iTunes music through.
I have looked through the help sections, but it all comes across too complicated sounding. It can't be that hard.
What do I do to set it up & NOT screw up my already working internet conection?
I have the audio cable hooked up to my stereo/Airport Express downstairs & the Airport Express plugged in... "Yellow Light" lit on Express, what next?
    Thanks fellow Mac Fans!

For the AX connected to the speakers:
To set up AirTunes on the AirPort Express Base Station (AX), using the AirPort Admin Utility, connect your computer directly (using an Ethernet cable) to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then, try these settings:
    AirPort tab
    - Base Station Name: <whatever you wish or use the default>
    - Wireless Mode: Join an Existing Wireless Network (Wireless Client)
    - Wireless Network: <select the existing wireless network>
    Music tab
    - Enable AirTunes on this base station (checked)
    - Enable AirTunes over the Ethernet port (optional)
    - iTunes Speaker Name: <whatever you wish>
    - iTunes Speaker Password (optional)
    In iTunes:
    iTunes > Preferences... > Advanced > General
    - Look for remote speakers connected with AirTunes (checked)

  • Help needed in configuring AirPort Express for Warcraft!

Will someone talk me through how to configure my AirPort Express so that I am able to play Warcraft? The downloader is telling me that I'm behind a firewall, however I have configured my Firewalls on my computer to allow Warcraft, and it's still not really working.
I'm not the most tech-savvy, any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thank you Duane and others.
This is a very interesting discussion group with a lot of AX users having problems for one reason or another. The main frustration is with, at least for me, the intermittent functionality. As opposed to my wireless laptop, which connects with the network each and every time I turn it on, the AX is good about 75% of the time. And in turn, if iTunes or the Airport Utility can't see the AX there's absolutely nothing you can do to get it to, short of rebooting the laptop, restarting iTunes, etc.
My next plan is to move AX rather close to the wireless router to ascertain if signal strength is the issue.
And I have 'one' last question, are there people out there that have 100% success all the time using AX, especially for streaming iTunes?
    Thanks again.

  • Configuring Airport Express for Wireless G

Is it important or would it help with Airport Express' performance if it was configured for wireless 'g' instead of 'n'? And if so, how do you do that with a pc?
    Thanks

  • Can I Use Airport Express for Airplay and a non-apple router with streaming capabilities on the same network?

I want to do the following things but can't find one device that fits all purpose.
Wi-Fi router that has USB port to share external hard disk wirelessly to all devices (Mac, Samsung Smart TV, PC, Ipad, Iphone) along with inbuilt torrent download capability that also has a 3.5mm jack to do airplay.
Greedy? Yes I know but why can't we have it all I ask.
Airport Express severs Wifi Router + Airplay purpose
Then there are other non-apple routers in market that satisfy my need to attach external hard disk and stream to the devices mentioned (Note: Timecapsule will not stream to my Smart TV)
So I am thinking why not connect both Airport Express and a second non-apple router and get best of both worlds.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks in advance.

  • Airport Express for Airplay Audio Stream while still using iPhone's 3G/4G Internet?

I'd like to use an Airport Express to stream music from my iphone via Airplay (AMP > Analog RCA's > Minijack Splitter > Airport Express). Here's the rub: I wont have an internet connection where this setup is located at.
Basic networking would make it impossible to get online with thise becaue the iphone would be looking at the Airport as the default gate.
I understand that you can setup the network on your phone to be a static IP, subnet, and leave the default gateway blank. This should allow the phone to see the Airport/Airplay and still utilize the 3G/LTE of the AT&T service. Can anyone confirm this?  UPDATED, THIS PIECE WORKS LIKE A CHARM.
If that works, that's great, I could stop there, but I'd like to take it a step further to make it easier to use by someone other than a network engineer. Can you set the DHCP server on the Express to give out a Blank default gateway, or will you need to configure the network on each device you connect to it?
The last piece isn't a deal killer for me, but it would make it super easy to use for others.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks!

Hello TKSF78. Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I want to use my Airport Express to stream my music to my stereo so I can listen to music while still using the WIFI connection for internet.
In order to do both simultaneously, you just need to reconfigure the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) to join the wireless network created by the other router.
The following is the basic settings to do so:
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
o Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
o Wireless Network Name: <enter the Network Name or SSID of the wireless network that you want your AX to join>
o Wireless Security: <select the appropriate security type>
o Wireless Password: <enter the appropriate wireless security password>
AirPort Utility > Manual Setup > Music
    o Enable AirTunes (checked)

  • Airport express for airplay only, not extending network

I have just bought an airport extreme and airport express.
The extreme is plugged into modem, and the express is in my living room, plugged into some older speakers.  The point of the express is to airplay-enable these speakers, not to extend the network.
I've got both set up and they're working, except that the audio drops out of the airplay every so often, in light of which a couple of questions:
    1.  Even though I the point of the express is not to extend my network coverage, I guess it is doing that by default anyway?
    2.  Isn't a downside of that that accessing the network via the express will be slower than accessing it via the extreme directly?
    3.  Also, might the reason the express drops the audio be that other devices are using it to access the network?  If so, and this is the BIG QUESTION:  is there a way of continuing to use the express to airplay-enable my speakers, but not allow devices to use it for anything other than airplay?
    thanks lots
    d

is your point that devices near the Express but far from the Extreme will tend to receive a weaker signal since they're not permitted to use the Express (which in Join mode is restricted to communicating with the device that's streaming music to it) hence must communicate with the Extreme, which is some distance away?
    Yes
had thought that communicating with the Extreme rather than the Express might be faster (provided the Extreme is close enough for an adequate signal) since the Extreme is simply a faster bit of kit, but you've already said that might not be right -- I'll do a speed test.
You can make the argument either way that you want, but you won't know what the actual results will be in any given situation until you try things out in your own particular installation. In other words, there is no one "right" way to do things that will be correct in every situation.
I get five bars indicating good wifi signal strength but sometimes (as now) very very sluggish internet connection.  I thought the Extreme/Express combo might solve that but not really.
There are so many things that can affect wireless performance at any given time, that it is almost impossible to list them all. And, things are changing all the time.....cordless phones, other wireless networks, radio and TV broadcasts, wireless security systems.
As far as the AirPort Express is concerned, remember that it can only "extend" the quality of signal that it receives from the AirPort Extreme.  In other words, if you have an AirPort Extreme at one end of the house and an AirPort Express at the other end, the Express will receive a poor signal to extend.
In this example, the correct location of the Express would be a point that is about half way between the AirPort Extreme and the other end of the house.
The way to solve the wireless strength issue with an AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.......is connect both devices together using a wired Ethernet cable connection. Then, you can locate the Express exactly where it is needed, since there is no signal loss in a wire......and a lot of signal loss whenever a wireless signal must pass through a wall or other obstruction.

  • Cant connect my second Airport express for AirPlay

    Hi All,
Im trying to have my musiced play throughout the house by using Airplay on 2 Airport Expresses, but so far I have not had much luck.
I have the new 2nd generation Airport Express (AE) downstairs for the Bose system and using the older 1st Gen AE upstairs in the bedroom.
The downstairs 2nd gen works fine streaming to the Bose and I've managed to get the 1st gen airport express to work fine with the speaker unit upstairs but I cannot get iTunes to play across both speakers at the the same time.
Furthermore, when using Airport Utilities I can only 'see' the downstairs Airport Express ...unless i take my MAcBook upstairs and connect to the upstairs AE.
I've tried setting up the upstairs AE both as a stand alone wifi network and to extend the range of the wifi zone .....what am I missing??
I've also check the IP Address and DNS numbers but I dont know enough about those figures to know what means what, but I can tell you that they are different.
P.S. I am aware of the "multiple' tab under the Airplays tab in iTunes, but no luck so far.
Any help greatly appreciated as my master plan to extend music throughout the house is failing so far!

Magically just started working!!!  Posting in here worked.....

  • How do I set up iPad with airport express to stream music to stereo without internet connection?

how do i set up iPad and airport express to stream music to stereo without using internet connection.

Your 4th gen iPad does have the necessary software to connect to the AirPort Express but not to administer it. To do the later, you would need to install the AirPort Utility applet.
You said that your iPad can "see" the AirPort's wireless network, but can't connect. What happens exactly when you attempt to do so? Do any of your other wireless devices have any trouble connecting to the Express? Did you configure the Express for a closed network ... that is, not to broadcast its Network Name?

  • I am using an airport express to stream from iTunes to my stereo.  My router is a net gear type G.  Setting up is no problem for the first time.  But, when I close iTunes then restart I have to reset (using the reset button)and reset up.  Wanna do it one?

Using a. Airport express to stream from iTunes.  My Router is a Netgear type G.  The express sets up fine and works the first time.  When I try to use it at a later date after closing then reopening iTunes I have to physically reset the express and then go through the process of finding it again.  Is this normal?

I have a 3rd generation (802.11n capable, 2.4Ghz only) airport express, my problem is that I've tried using it to extend my network and that brick wall, no matter how close I get the express to the room, the signal and throughput in that room becomes abysmal.
As you might imagine, brick is a lot like cement, and it will not allow much of the wireless signal through.
Regarding your Express, there is no such thing as a 3rd Generation model....yet. You likely have a 1st Generation AirPort Express. Check and confirm the Model No on the side of the Express. A 1st Gen model is A1264.
Here's my problem, I don't think the express supports "extending" a network from a wired network jack.
The Express can "extend" wirelessly, or using an Ethernet connection. The configuration for this is very simple, but post back if you need it.
The jack just seems to be shut off
Have you temporarily turned off the wireless on a laptop and tried to connect it using an Ethernet cable to the wall jack as a "test"?
If you can get a good Internet connection this way, then you know the Ethernet cabling and jack are working correctly.
On the other hand, if you cannot get an Internet connection on the laptop during this "test", then this indicates that the Ethernet cable or jack is not functioning correctly and the wiring will need troubleshooting before you can proceed any further.
I need to create a whole new wireless network in this room for this configuration to work?
AirPort Setup will take care of this for you automatically during the configuration of the AirPort Express.
If I have an apple TV connecting to the express and an AppleTV connecting to the extreme, will they both be visible when connected wirelessly to either network?
    Yes
Will I be able to connect to my network seemlessly?
    Yes
Post back after you have confirmed that the Ethernet cable and Ethernet jack are functioning correctly in the temporary "test" mentioned above.  Then, we will continue.

  • How can I set up an older airport express using the newest airport utilities?

How can I set up an older airport express using the newest airport utilities? Seems like there isn't an option to set this up.  Normally you could add/set up this in the airport setup assistant- but that doesn't exsist any longer.
    Thanks for any suggestions

How can I set up an older airport express using the newest airport utilities?
Unfortunately you can't, since Apple dropped support of the older AirPorts with AirPort Utility 6.x.
Using some workarounds....not supported by Apple.....you might be able to download and install an older version of AirPort Utility that would allow you to administer the older AirPort.

I do not need another wireless network but want to use the airport express for printer access only.  Can this be done and how?

You can configure the AirPort Expess to "Join a wireless network" and enable the Ethernet port so that Ethernet devices will be able to connect.
In order to print from the iOS devices, you will need to have an application like Printopia installed on your Mac. The Mac must be active when you want to print.
More details here: Printopia - AirPrint to Any Printer - Print from iPad - Print from iPhone ...
There is a free trial available for Printopia, so make sure that it will work before you buy the AirPort Express.
