How to set up both static and DHCP assigned addresses on an AirPort Extreme

I recently bought an AirPort Extreme to replace my failed Cisco/Linksys router.
I am having trouble figuring out how I can configure the Extreme to support the already static IP addresses on my network as well as assign IP addresses via DHCP to a few devices where static IPs are not supported, i.e., work laptop.
Additionally, when DHCP is turned on, are my only options the 10.0, 172.16, and 192.168? What if I am running something like 10.10 or 172.30?
I am far from green when setting up computer networks, but this AirPort Extreme is making me pull my hair out.
BTW, I have access to a number of computers running a number of OSes including Windows XP, 7, and 8, as well as Mac OS X Snow Leopard and Mountain Lion.
The Mountain Lion or Windows 7 machine would be the preferred ones to configure the Extreme. I already have the AirPort Utility software running on them.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have found the 'DHCP Reservations' option on the AirPort Extreme to be buggy.  I seem to remember it causing IP conflicts for some reason.  I think what I remember is that if the computer with the reservation was off, and the DHCP server then handed out that IP to another DHCP client, then there would be a conflict when the reserved IP computer was turned back on.  Maybe it was an issue in ealier versions of the AE or OS X as the case may be, and maybe it's been corrected, but I've never bothered using it agian since the method I describe below has always worked without fail.  Also, I'm guessing DHCP Reservations would work fine if one manually enters IPs outside of the DHCP range but in the AE 'DHCP Reservation Setup Assistant' the IP options provided are within the DHCP range which to me makes no sense and increases the potential for IP conflicts.
Here's what I do to setup a mixed environment of static and dynamic IPs on my network.  It works like a charm and does not require the DHCP server (beyond the distribution of dynamic IPs to hosts using DHCP).
For machines on my network that are accepting services from the public network, I set them up with static IPs using the 'Manually' option (System Preferences/Network/Ethernet/Configure IPv4).  The settings for 'Router' IP address and 'DNS Server' IP address should both be set with your gateway/router LAN IP).  Use an IP address below or above the DHCP range of adresses (in AE/Internet/DHCP/DHCP Beginning & Ending Address).
i.e. if my subnet is 10.0.1.1 and my DHCP range is 10.0.1.100 to 10.0.1.150, you could set the static IPs on your local hosts as 10.0.1.x where x = any number from 2 - 99 or from 151 - 200 as an example.
All other machines and devices that do not require static routing are setup as DHCP clients and get a dynamic IP from the AE.  To me it's a simpler setup though it might take a little extra time to setup initially.

  • 802.1x and DHCP assigned addresses

    I've done a lot of reading on this but I am still confused. I'm not a Microsoft guru so I don't really know waht is going on with login scripts, or cached user/pass.
    Scenario 1
    ==========
    I have 802.1x implemented and Joe the contractor comes into the office and plugs in his laptop. He is a guest. I allow guests to have access to a guest VLAN. How can Joe automatically get an IP address, or does he have to do ipconfig /renew?
    Scenario 2
    ==========
    What is the behind the scenes process that takes place for my corporate users that login to a domain....how do they get DHCP assigned addresses?
    Thanks

    I assume from what you have written 'Joe' doesn't have an 802.1x supplicant on his PC? Therefore the switchport eapol frames are ignored by the PC and after a timeout the port is placed in the guest vlan. You need to make sure DHCP is enabled for the guest vlan - either add the appropriate entried to the protecting ACL or add a scope on the router? Depending on the timeouts you may have some delay issues here; I would test this before you roll it out.
    For clients with 802.1x supplicants what happens is the PC effectively thinks it is disconnected from the network until the supplicant has authenticated. Once it has authenticated the PC thinks the network adapter is then connected and it will attempt to lease an IP address by broadcasting a DHCP request.
    There are however a few 802.1x supplicants and I am not sure how they all integrate with the host O/S. I know the built-in Microsoft one operates as I have described.

  • Define static IP for both LAN and W-LAN devices with an Airport Extreme Base Station

    Hey guys,
    I have a lot of different devices connected to my Airport Extreme Base Station (5th Gen) either wirelessly or via ethernet cable. Since I control some of them via VNC and currently have to find the corresponding IP-addresses through trial-and-error, I'd like to define static IP-addresses for the computers in question. My network consists of a cable modem connected to a TP-Link WR1043ND router in the basement, from which an ethernet cable leads to the WAN-port of the aforementioned Airport Extreme Base Station on the 2nd floor. Two of the devices I want to remote-access are  wired to a D-Link DES-1005D switch, which in turn is connected to the 1st ethernet port of the Airport Base Station. The remaining 3 remote clients are connected over 802.11n. All computers run Windows.
    My problem now is that even though I was able to define static IP-addresses employing the "DHCP only" router mode, this didn't seem to work for the two computers connected via ethernet. Not only did I lose any internet connectivity with those, I even lost the ability to remote-connect to them using the VNC-viewer.
    The question now is: how do I specify static IP-addresses for my ethernet devices correctly?
    I hope you can help me.

    My network consists of a cable modem connected to a TP-Link WR1043ND router in the basement, from which an ethernet cable leads to the WAN-port of the aforementioned Airport Extreme Base Station on the 2nd floor.
    If you read the information in the other post, my answer would be the same here.
    The Router Mode of DHCP Only is rarely used, and would only really be appropriate if your ISP was providing you with a fixed bank of multiple fixed or static IP addresses to use. This does not appear to be the case in your post.
    If this were the case, the first IP address would be used as a Static IP address for your connection, and other devices on your network would receive the other fixed IP addresses.
    99%+ of the time, you would use the Router Mode setting of DHCP and NAT on a network when you want the AirPort to perform as the main router for the network.
    But......your post also indicates that you have another router upstream on your network from the AirPort Extreme.  You would not want to run two routers in series on a network. That explains the problems that you are having.
    The AirPort Extreme needs to be configured in Bridge Mode. It cannot be the "main" router on your network when you already have another router on the network. That is a fundamental networking rule.

  • Can't get both mac and PC to work simultaneously on airport extreme base

    I have an iMac connected to my airport base station wirelessly. I have my PC connected to the LAN port with an ethernet cable. We have the WAN port connected to our DSL modem. For some reason as soon as I get connected to the internet with my Mac, my PC's internet connection gets lost. occasionally i get a message that my airport must be set to "bridge mode". does anyone know how i can set this up to work?

  • Using AX as wireless router, how to set up w/ security and airtunes on XP

    I previously had a Linksys wireless router. I just purchased an Airport express to use as the wireless router (and remove the Linksys router) as well as use the Airtunes functionality.
    After some trial and error, I have been able to wireless connect my computer to the AX on it's own (the linksys router is now unplugged and out of the equation). I can connect to the internet fine on my PC (XP Pro SP2).
    Trouble is, when I use the Network Setup Assistant, it shows the apple network listed, but it can't connect to it, no matter how many times I try, reboot my machine or reboot the AX. I've tried both the "setting up a new network" and "editing an existing network" option, and in each selection, after a few minutes of trying to connect to the network, I just get a failure message.
    If I try and use the Admin utility, nothing shows up in the left-hand list window, and when I Press re-scan, still nothing shows (it doesn't even appear to scan).
    I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. I can't find simple instructions on how to set up the AX as the only wireless router for a PC and set up security and Airtunes (I'm assuming enabling airtunes is done in these applications, as I haven't seen anything about that yet either).
    Any ideas on how this is done with a PC? Much thanks!

  • How can I print BOTH legal and letter on my duel tray printer????

    How can I print BOTH legal and letter on my duel tray printer from my mac? on a pc you can choose "print according to pdf size" and the mixed document will print in both legal and letter auto-selecting the printer tray.

    Hello CKAY,
    My old printer does not show 8x10 either.
    In the printing preferences under the Paper/Quality tab, do you see a "Custom" option or button? There should be one in there somewhere in your preferences.
    Click on that and create a custom size of 8 in for the width and 10 in for the length. Be sure to "Name" it 8x10 Photo and click ok.
    Now give it whatever attributes you want under the other tabs and click Apply and OK (or just OK).
    Close out the printer and open it again and the new size you created should show in the list.

    How do I create both endnotes and footnotes in same doc in Pages? I have iWork 2008. I understand how to create one or the other, but not both.

    You have to select one or the other.
    Try making two documents and see if you can merge the .pdfs, but their will be problems with page flow, making the pages shift. Can't see it working really.
    Pages is not the only solution out there or the best for most jobs (let alone the safest). Try Word for Mac, LibreOffice (free) or any App that has the features you need.

  • How to set value for trim and bleed using jsx script?

    I have tried using bleedoffsetRect but somehow it is not working. Can anybody please help me on how to set value for trim and bleed using jsx script? Any example will be highly appreciated.
    Following is the code I am trying with:
    var _saveName = new File ( root_path +_strFileName+".pdf");
        var _saveOpts = new PDFSaveOptions();
        _saveOpts.printerResolution = 300;
        var bleedarray = new Array();
         bleedarray[0] =9.00;
         bleedarray[1]=9.00;
         bleedarray[2]=9.00;
         bleedarray[3]=9.00;
        _saveOpts.bleedOffsetRect = bleedarray;

    I would expect although I've not actually tried this for the bleed off set box to be larger than the artbaord and the first two values to be negative or 0…
    var bleedarray = new Array(-9,-9,artboard.width+9,artboard.height+9);
    Where 'artboard.width' & 'artboard.height' you will have calculated from your file. An Array(9,9,9,9); would not constitute any boxes bounds.

  • How to set a minimum width and height for a stage or scene?

    Hello,
    Does anyone how to set a minimum width and height for a stage or scene?
    I tried listening for width/height property value changes and then adjust the width/height if necessary, but that causes unpleasant flickering of the window.
    In JavaFX 2.1 beta SDK for Mac OS, the Stage class has setMinWidth() and setMinHeight() functions which work very well.
    I'm wondering what's the equivalent way to do that when using the FX SDK for Windows.
    Any help is appreciated!
    Thanks.

    I was wondering how to enforce a minimum stage size with JavaFX 2.0.3.The same flickering way you are currently doing it. See: http://javafx-jira.kenai.com/browse/RT-15200 "Need a way to set the minimum size of a window"

    Hi,
    How can i open both tcp and UDP ports for an IP in Cisco ASA?
    Regards

    Are you referring to port opening in Cisco ASA to permit certain traffic? I believe the following document should help.
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa82/configuration/guide/acl_overview.html
    Adding a Standard Access List
    hostname(config)# access-list access_list_name standard {deny | permit} {any | ip_address mask}
    Example:
    hostname(config)# access-list OSPF standard permit 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/security/asa/asa82/configuration/guide/acl_standard.html
    Adding an Extended Access List
    access-list access_list_name [line line_number] [extended] {deny | permit} protocol source_address mask [operator port] dest_address mask [operator port | icmp_type] [inactive]
    Example:
    hostname(config)# access-list ACL_IN extended permit ip any any
