How to set up Express as a relay wireless base station ? System: Yosemite

How to set up Express as a relay wireless station ?
OS: Yosemite.
Airport utility: 6.3.4
Base station: Extreme, connected to modem.  Configured as "create a wireless network"
Remote stations: Express, connected wireless as "extend a wireless network"
Need relay station between Extreme and Express units.
Airport utility doesn't give the "relay" option.

Sorry, but Apple does not provide a "relay" option. The network can only be extended one time, not two.
Move the remote station closer to the main station, or move the main station closer to the remote station, or move both closer together.

I would recommend setting the wireless encryption on the AirPort Express BEFORE configuring it for the AirPort Extreme in this case. This issue also comes up often when configuring AirPorts into a WDS.
If setting up security in my recommend order does not work, temporarily connect the Express by Ethernet to the Extreme; make the security changes, and then, move the Express back to the desired location.

  • 2nd Airport Express wont show up in  Base Station Chooser, iTunes

Hi, I have 2 Airport Express units on the same network. One is showing up, the other is not. Both were working perfectly. I recently upgraded my router to a Linksys BEFSR41. When I run the Base Station Chooser, one shows up the other does not. The same happens in iTunes. I can address the Airport Express by chooser Other from Base Station Chooser, then entering its IP address. I updated firmware in both units to 6.3. Both units are configured identically. If I access the hidden airport express from a wireless PC it shows up fine but the other one does not

Thank you for your post, but I do not understand why you are giving me a link to the generic airport express site. The configuration I have was working fine before I upgraded my router.

  • Can't connect my express to my time machine base station?

can't connect my express to my time machine base station I am in a loop and frustrated

Ok, you have an older 802.11g AX. The steps to configure it for streaming are the same for both models. Let's go over it quickly just in case something was missed.
AirPort Express Base Station (AX) - iTunes Setup
Either connect to the AX's wireless network or connect directly, using an Ethernet cable, to the Ethernet port of the AX, and then using the AirPort Utility in "Manual Setup" mode, make the following changes:
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup > AirPort > Wireless
Wireless Mode: Join a wireless network
    Network Name: <existing TC's wireless network>
Wireless Security: <select the encryption type of the existing wireless network>
Wireless Password: <enter the existing wireless network password>
Verify Password: <re-enter the existing wireless network password>
AirPort Utility > Select the AX > Manual Setup >Music
    Enable AirTunes (checked)
iTunes Speaker Name: <enter desired speaker name>
    iTunes Speaker Password: (optional)
    Verify Password: (optional)
Click Update to write the new settings to the AX
    Please post back your results.

  • Can you use 2 Aiport Express's; one as a base station & one to extend range

I have 2 Express units. Would like to use one as base station and one as a booster to extend the signal. Can this be done, or do you have to have an Extreme? I have 2 expresses as want to be able to use airtunes on 2 seperate stereos (not necessarily at same time). My cofig would be have cable modem ethernetted to the 1st Express, and have it also hooked to cable; computer in same room. 2nd Express is downstairs, near anohter stereo. Would like the one computer to send airtunes to both stereos ultimately.
Have tried using airport admin utility ap in the Utilities folder, but did not seem to help; no doubt I may have not done properly.
Thank you to the genius who can help me w/ this. Tim

I have 2 Express units. Would like to use one as base
station and one as a booster to extend the signal.
    Can this be done
    Yes.
Configure one Airport Express (AX) as a normal base station.
Hard reset the second and reconfigure using the assistant to extend the network of the first, this will automatically configure both AXs correctly.

  • How to add airport express to my current wireless network

    Hi guys.
I have a dlink router (ac) configured as NAT and a friend of mine gave me an airport express (ac) to extend my current wireless network.
I believe that i should configure the airport express as bridge mode in order to mantain my current ip range.
I'm trying to configure the airport express but i can't even loggin to it.
    The question.
Can i use this device to extend my current wireless network or do i need an airport base station to do this?.
Thanks so much and any help would be really appreciated.
    Regards.
    Francisco.

Can i use this device to extend my current wireless network or do i need an airport base station to do this?.
Unfortunately, the answer is that neither an AirPort Express nor an AirPort Extreme is compatible with a D-Link router....or any other 3rd party router for that matter.....if you are trying to have the the AirPort device extend the signal using wireless.
The AirPort Express can extend a signal from another Apple router.
'm trying to configure the airport express but i can't even loggin to it.
You may have received an older version of the Express that is not compatible with the newer Mac operating system that you are using.
Look for the model number of the Express on the side of the device.....hard to see in the faint print.....you may need a magnifying glass.  If you see model A1084 or A1088, these older versions are no longer supported by Lion, Mountain Lion or Mavericks operating systems.
The workaround is that you must use a Mac that is running Leopard or Snow Leopard, or a PC to be able to administer the older versions of the AirPort Express models.

  • Airport Express Transmits To Airport Extreme Base Station Intermittently

I have an Airport Extreme set up as my base station wirelessly.  I also have an Airport Express set up to extend the range of my network.
The reason I have the air port express is that the walls of my house are very thick, so I thought that if I have an Airport Express, then I can jump the signal from one signal strength room to a week signal strength room.
The length of the house is within the 30m range.  Airport Utility occasionally can not see the AExtreme or AExpress but if I put both in the same room it picks both up.   At the low signal strength end of the house my MacBook or MacBook Pro Air Port Utility only picks up the AExpress located at this end of the house.  If I restart the AExpress then Airport Utility picks up both airports in the week signal room, then the Extreme drops out.
Q1 - Why does this happen i.e. only showing the nearest / clearest signal air port?
What I have established is that the connection to the internet is always through the wireless signal from the AExtreme (ADS Router connected directly to this).  I established this by switching off the AExpress at the week signal end of the house and finding a spot where the signal could be picked up.
Q2 - If the AEtxreme and AExpress are within the nominal 30 m range why cant my lap tops just pick up both Airports on Airport Utility.
Q3 - Can you set up both Airports such that one will boost the signal and if so how.
Q4 - When running AExtreme only why does the signal strength vary - even when sitting right next to the extreme?
    Thanks
    Alastair

    On this same topic;
We have a new Extreme base station that connects 1 MBP, (wirelessly), 1 HP Laptop (wirelessly) and 2 PC (via ethernet) to the internet.
All of the computers can see and use the Extreme base station and the printer connected to it via USB.
We also have an Airport Express that the two laptops can see. This has a printer connected to it as well via USB. (both are new Canon printers and all of the software for each, and their drivers are loaded on all computers).
Both the Extreme and Express have a steady green light, their own names and are set up on the same network.
Though my MBP can see both the Extreme and Express, neither "see" each other as far as I can tell. And, the printer connected to the Express cannot be seen in either Bonjour Printers, or anywhere else.
Also, in order to "attempt" to find the printer connected to the Express, I have to disconnect from the Extreme Base Station and connect to the Express.
How can I get the printer (connected to the Express) to show up in my pick list of printers WITHOUT having to disconnect from the Extreme and connect to the Express. Also, how can we get the Express to be connected to the internet via the Extreme?
All searches here and documents I have poured though do not address this issue and we'd really like to get this straightened out. I am willing to take a lot of time to do this, but do it right.
Can someone please help me with this?
    Thank you in advance,
    ~ J

  • Can I iTunes to Airport Express while surfing internet from Base Station

I am new to Macs and Networking. I have DSL ethernet plugged into Airport Extreme Base Station and Express into my stero. I have set up a network pointing to each but when I choose the Express network for streaming music, I cannot connect to the internet which is on my Base station. Is there a network configuration that will do both. Working w/a new Powerbook G4. Mac OS 10.4. Thanks for any help.

  • How do I share my DS4600 USB on Airport Base Station?

It's true I'm not the most Mac savvy, but everything I've read seems to indicates this is plug & play, but so far not for me.
I have a SmartStor DS4600 (by Promise Technologies).  It's set for RAID 0, just recently formatted with "Journaled HFS+".
So, it's definitely an Apple partition.
I plug it into the USB port on the back of the Airport Base Station (2nd Generation)(running version 7.6.3).
According to documentation, I should just see the volume for the DAS show up in my Finder, but I don't.  Only if I plug it in to a USB port on the actual computer.  (MacBook Pro, OS 10.8.3)
I do see my Airport in Finder, and I do have a volume called "Data" that I can access... but no other disks.  I also thought maybe the extra HD space would be added to the existing Airport Disk.  It isn't.
Sort of at a loss, and I can't find any documentation that explains how to troubleshoot.
The ultimate goal is to use the DS4600 to hold my iTunes library.  I doubt that information helps, but it couldn't hurt.

That information helps. If you want to use one of the SmartStor's disks as a repository for sharing your iTunes Library, then do not configure that disk as a RAID. Format it with Disk Utility using the Erase tab. Mac OS Extended (Journaled) is the correct choice.
Connect it to your Time Capsule, then use AirPort Utility to configure access requirements for sharing it on your network. It should appear as a shared volume in the Finder, available to all your Macs as you thought it should.
I also thought maybe the extra HD space would be added to the existing Airport Disk.  It isn't.
Correct. There is no way to do that. The only way to increase the capacity of a Time Capsule's hard disk is to replace the Time Capsule (or its disk, if you are amenable to disassembling it) with a larger capacity model.
If you also want to use the SmartStor as a RAID, that is another story, and you should probably attack that problem separately.

  • How do I change the network password without a base station?

I do not have an airport base station. My roommate has a PC connected to a router via ethernet and I created a wireless network on the same router via airport. Now I've hopelessly forgotten the password and I can't figure out how to reset it or change it or whatever! Can anyone help me, please? I've searched the forums and have only found answers for those folks with the fancy airport base stations.

    Hi,
The WLAN password could only be change on the router page you found and in order to get there, you need the administrator password.
If you never modify it, you could give a try by entering "Administrator" and leaving password blank which is usually the factory setting. If this not work, it will be necessary to reset your router to its factory setting.
I personnally do not know the Belkin routers. But here is the link to get your router manual:

  • How do I make my new Airport Extreme a base station?

I have been using an Airport Extreme (5th generation) as my base station router for a few years. I set the main network for my and my wife's use and created a guest network for when my sons visited and needed to use the wi-fi connection. I used passwords for both networks. Today I purchased a new 802.11 ac Airport Extreme. I unplugged the 5h gen. Extreme and plugged in the new Extreme. After a short hunt, my new 27" (late 2013) iMac found the new Extreme and had me set up a name and a password for it using Airport Utility. I was expecting it to ask if I wanted to set up a guest network, but it did not. I was expecting it to ask since I believe that is what happened when I installed my 5th gen Extreme a few years ago. For the 5th gen Extreme, I had to enter a password to protect settings on the Extreme, a WPA2 password for my main network and another password for my guest network. It took about 10 minutes to set up. For this new Airport Extreme I entered just one password. It took about 2 to 3 minutes for the entire setup. When I checked the menu in the Airport Utility under "Base Station", all lines are grayed out. Under the File Menu in Airport Utility, "Configure Other" is available, but "Import Configuration file" and "Export Configuration file" are also grayed out. I checked Network Settings in System Preferences and I see my new network name in the Wi-Fi menu and under the "Advanced..." button, I see the old and new Networks listed in the "Preferred networks" box.
So, how do I get the new Airport Extreme to act as the Base station and be able to enter a guest network? Does it require me to delete the old Network name from the Advanced... button page in System Preferences > Network Settings? Will I just have to start all over with the new Extreme to make it a base station?

    Hello Leo,
I'm not at home so can't confirm but I can only assume that maybe some of the "old" settings in airport utility have changed, and simplified.  Hence why you probably only need one password.
When I bought the new "tower" like AirPort Extreme, I just plugged it into the Ethernet, powered it on with the previous generation Extreme in place and in Airport Utility it just asked me if I wanted to copy the settings to the newer device, which included a few "port forwarding" settings.  All done in this sequence.  I didn't have guest network set up but you can still set up guest network under wireless in Airport Utility, hope this helps!

  • Will there be a new airport express like the new airport base station?

Will the airport express be upgradable to the "N" standard? (I doubt it.)
If you want to use your airport express with the new Base stations wouldn't it screw up the "Pre-N" mode? (I don't doubt it)
Is apple saying that one wouldn't need an airport express to extend the reach of the new base station because the new "Pre-N" modes have so much more range? (I think so).
Does this mean that apple will be making a new version of the Airport express with A,B, G and "Pre-N" ? How cool would that be? I want one of those!!
IMHO the airport express is the coolest Network device available for use with either Macs or WINdoz machines. It is just plain cool. It seems to me that the new Base station has little or no place in it's heart for it's older little brother.

As you know from reading the "Help & Terms of Use" for this discussion area, we are Mac users like yourself and have no special knowledge of Apple's future plans or activities.
Furthermore in the "Help & Terms of Use" it states that speculation on future Apple products, plans, or activities is forbidden in this discussion area.

  • How many users can be logged on to the base station

how manty users can be logged onto the base station?

I am not sure if you mean this to be in the TC area but it will handle 50users I think was the spec.. but never ever do it. Around 10users per AP is about the max you ever want to try. That is assuming all are using the net at the same time. You can probably manage more as long as most are not actually in use.

  • How to disable Ethernet Port on 2003 Airport Extreme Base Station

I have a roommate who does not help with the cable bill. He is always plugging his computer into the ethernet port of the Airport base station (no wireless card in his computer). The Base Station sit on top of the cable box in the living where its plugged directly into the cable box for internet access. Unfortunately moving the cable box or base station is not an option. How do I disable the ethernet port or prevent him from having access to the base staion?

+How do I disable the ethernet port or prevent him from having access to the base staion?+
You could prevent him from connecting using wireless, but not ethernet.
On second thought, you could hide his ethernet cable. For a permanent solution, you could always fill the ports with glue, but would probably regret it at some point.
