How to set up wireless connection

I just got the Macbook Pro. Unfortunately, I've never used a Mac before and am foreign to the interface. I have a D-Link router. How do I go about setting it up? I'm not computer savvy at all.
I know you go to System Preferences - Network, but then what?
Please help.
Thanks.

Hello Jay, and welcome to the Discussions!!
There shouldn't be much you need to do. First, we need to know a few things about your router. Is the wireless network password-protected (encrypted)? Does the router broadcast the SSID?
Any "open" wireless routers should be recognized by "Airport" (which is what Apple calls standard 802.11x wireless networking), and you will be asked if you want to join whatever networks are found. While Airport will "see" any password-protected networks that are broadcasting an SSID (basically, the name of the network), and it will show them in a list that appears in the "Airport menu" at the top of your display, it won't automatically ask you if you would like to join.
Out of the box, all Macs should be pre-configured to go online via a wireless network automatically. You can turn Airport on and off, from the menu I mentioned above, but it should be on by default. Double-check that it is: In your "Menu Bar," at the top of the display, look for a triangle with a curved top and concentric lines. This is your "Airport menu." Open it, and make sure that it reads "Turn Airport Off." Otherwise, it will read "Turn Airport On." You want it to be on
Assuming your wireless network is secured (password-protected), you'll need to select it from that same menu, then choose the correct encryption protocol, then enter the correct password. Provided you get all this right, you will join your network and gain a connection to the internet. Alternating lines on the Airport menu icon will turn black to show the signal strength. Also, you will be asked if you would like to store the authentication credentials for this network in your Keychain. You do!
If you still have trouble at this point, you might need to have a look at System Preferences>Network. First, use the "Show:" pull-down menu to select "Network Port Configurations." You will see a list of potential network ports, among them "Airport," "Ethernet," Firewire," etc. If you want Airport to be your main mode of internet connection, drag it to the top, and make sure it has a check next to it (make sure that it is enabled). Your Mac will look for internet connections in the order outlined in this list.
Next, change the "Show:" menu to select "Airport." In this window, click the "Airport" tab. The "By default, join:" menu should read "Automatic." Now click the "TCP/IP" tab. The "Configure IPv4:" menu should read "Using DHCP." You shouldn't need to bother with the other tabs.
That just about covers most any situation. If it does not cover yours, give us some more info, and we'll try to respond.

At another house for a while, how do I get the local wifi to connect automatically?

    Hi,
You just have to connect to the wifi with the Airport icon on the top left corner of then menu bar, next the hour indicator.
You probably have to enter the password, if you check save the password for this local wifi, next time, your macintosh will connect automatically.
That's ok for my local wifi at house, and for local wifi at dad's house.
    pretty simple like a mac

  • How to set up internet connection between MacBook Pro and an old eMac?

I got an old eMac without wifi and a MacBook Pro. I'd like to share the network connection via ethernet cable to my eMac, but I can't get it work.
I'd like to use it with screenrecycler and it needs a network connection.
How to do it? How to set up the connection between the client and the host? Could somebedy give me a step by step guide?
    Thank you very much

    Hello,
First, are you using Wifi for Internet on the MBP?
System Preferences>Network, click on the little gear at the bottom next to the + & - icons, (unlock lock first if locked), choose Set Service Order.
The interface that connects to the Internet should be dragged to the top of the list, Wifi on the MBP.
In Shating on both, enable File Sharing, Screen Sharing, & Web Sharing on both.
Then with the Ethernet cable between the two, find the IPs of both, or use Finder>Go>Connect to Server>Browse... see what shows up.

    1. Network Configuration
Have your network password (if you use one) and your Apple Remote handy to configure your Apple TV. Make sure there are no obstructions between the remote and Apple TV. Read more about using and troubleshooting the Apple Remote.
    If you:
Use a wired Ethernet network to connect, Apple TV automatically detects your network.
Use a wireless network to connect, Apple TV helps you select and configure your network connection.
    Connecting to Your Wireless Network
Apple TV will help you connect to your wireless network. If you use a password to access your network, have it ready. Use the Apple Remote to:
Select your network from the list, or enter your network name if the network is hidden.
Enter your password (if you have one).

  • Can't set up wireless connection for HP C4385 All-In-One with Windows 7.

    Hi guys,
I just got a new laptop with Windows 7 64 bit. I already had an HP C4385 All-In-One that I was using with my last computer. I have also just set up a new wireless network because I got a new cable provider. So basically I needed to do everything from the beginning.
When I inserted the setup CD and ran the setup program, it said I couldn't continue because my OS was not supported. I went to the HP website and found the solution, which was to plug the printer in via USB and let Windows Update find the latest driver. Ok, that's fine, the printer works now when the USB cord is plugged in.
To set up the wireless connection, the instruction manual says I need to do it through the network setup wizard p on the CD. But that brings me back to my original problem-- the setup CD won't work because it doesn't recognise Windows 7.
So my question is-- how can I update the network settings (SSID and key) on the printer without the network setup wizard?
Thanks for any help, this is really driving me crazy!

  • How to share mobile wireless connection from Win XP to mac?

    Hi,
I have two comupters, one mac and one PC (win XP). I am trying to share the mobile wireless broadband from my PC to the mac. I set up the sharing from mac to PC successfully quite a while ago, but now I need to work extensively on mac. So I tried to set up the sharing in the other around and nothing worked at all. Here is what I did.
    1. I enabled the sharing of the mobile wireless connection on PC.
    2. I tried to set up a small/home network, but it didn't work on Mac as the windows softwares can't be run on mac
    3. I also tried to set up a peer-to-peer connection from PC to Mac which also didn't work.
Does anyone how to do the sharing from PC to Mac? Thanks a lot!

Okay, firstly some routers or mdoems come with 2 ports on the back so you can connect two different computers so simply plug them both in
if not, then i advise you buy a router which allows you to add numerous computers to the same network via wires or add numerous computers wirelessly
i have one computer connect to my netgear router -wired
i have one computer wirelessly connected with a Netgear USB wireless reciever
then i got my laptop which is connected via wireless
i have xbox live which i connect to the internet via my laptops wireless connection, this can be done with any pc or laptop aswell
    what you do is
wireless networks - where it showws any detected networks
change advanced options - on the side
    advanced tab
then allow other computers to use this computers internet connection
    simple as
all you do is plug in your other pc or whatever

  • Set up wireless connection on OS X Yosemite 10.10.2

How do I set up my wireless connection on OS X Yosemite 10.10.2?

Follow the installation/setup instructions with your modem/router. Since there is no Mac compatible software with most of those, you can simply check their instructions and enter things manually on the router's webpage - usually something like 192.168.x.x. You need to set up the modem and/or router first before you can try to connect your devices (which should then be pretty automatic or you can check in Network Preferences).
Or are you talking about something else?

Does anyone know how to fix this? I am replacing my airport extreme with a Time Capsule. The lan connection works fine with our laptop, but not the iMac. The wireless connection is not recognized, even though it is set up.
    Any ideas?

When you say "the wireless connection is not recognized", do you mean that you can't see the network under the AirPort menu bar item?

  • Apex Listener in standalone mode, how to set/reset db connection.

Sometime ago I installed Apex Listener for testing, then I removed it.
Now I downloaded last version, installed it in standalone mode and try to set the DB connection.
However when I try to edit in listenerAdmin page the db connection parameters I can't : they are greyed and report the connection informations I gave in my first test installation.
How can I change them ?
How can I avoid all fields in listenerAdmin greyed ?
    Tks
    Tullio

    Hello Tullio,
you can run /listenerConfigure/ only as long as there is no configuration available. The database parameters can only be setup when the APEX Listener is not connected due to the state of its connection pool. Once it is established, you can only configure it offline by editing the apex-config.xml . That's why the parameters are greyed out in /listenerAdmin/.
You probably only removed the war file of your test installation, but not the apex.home including the apex-config.xml that is stored in there. So your new installation found the old home and reused the connection.
You could either edit the apex-config.xml or delete the apex.home and rerun /listenerConfigure/
If you run on a windows system, you'll find the apex.home in your users TEMP, usually located in the temp folder underneath the local settings of your user profile. The directory to locate is now called "apex".

  • How many pcs can wirelessly connect to an Officejet P1102w printer

What limits how many separate PCs can connect to an Office Jet P1102w. Is there a limit in the printer or is the limit more likely to be in the router?

    Hi KiamaraKid,
I understand you have a Laserjet P1102W printer and are wanting to know whether there is a limit on the printer as to how many computers can connect via network, or if the limitation would be on the router's end. I will do my best to help you with this issue.
With our HP printers wireless performance depends on physical environment and distance from the access point (router). Wireless operations are compatible with 2.4 GHz routers only as well. So the short answer is that the limitation is mainly on the router.
If you can get back to me with the router make and model, I will certainly see what I can find for you about it's limitations (meaning, how many computers can connect successfully to the router and thus the printer).
Hope this helps! Have a great day!

  • [SOLVED] Unable to set up wireless connection (wiki read)

Well, as you can see that's my 1st post. That's why I want, at first, congratulate the community for the amazing wiki and forums. It helped so much.
But I'm writing here because I have a problem that I'm unable to resolve with the wiki: The wireless connection. It doesn't work.
Now I will post my hardware and some software:
    ASUS Eeepc 1000
01:00.0 Network controller: Ralink corp. RT2860 (as # lspci | grep -i net says)
03:00.0 Ethernet controller: Atheros Communications AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 Gigabit or Faster Ethernet (rev b0) (as # lspci | grep -i net says)
Linux Kernel 3.2.4-1-ARCH (as # uname -r says)
    I3 window manager
    wireless_tools and wpa_supplicant installed
(If you want to know something more, ask me)
The wireless is enabled in the BIOS and the led indicator is on.
Being the network controller RT2860, must I do something special? I tried to blacklist what the wiki says with no results.
I have no problems with wired connection, but I can't set up my wireless connection with the # ip link set wlan0 up command (and yes, I execute this command as su or with sudo). I3 corroborates it in the status bar: W: down.
    # ip link list
    1: lo: <LOOPBACK,UP,LOWER_UP> mtu 16436 qdisc noqueue state UNKNOWN link/loopback 00:00:00:00:00:00 brd 00:00:00:00:00:00
    ( I had it disconnected when I did this check)2: eth0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc pfifo_fast state DOWN qlen 1000 link/ether 00:22:15:08:af:e2 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
    3: wlan0: <NO-CARRIER,BROADCAST,MULTICAST,UP> mtu 1500 qdisc mq state DOWN qlen 1000 link/ether 00:15:af:ba:39:b8 brd ff:ff:ff:ff:ff:ff
I tried a lot of thing, but no results at all. Must I configure manually some file like wpa_supplicant.conf, rc.conf or others? It is normal that in rc.conf, NETWORKING tab, the only interface is  eth0 (interface=eth0) with no other references to wlan0?
    Thanks for your attention.

That thing on the wiki about blacklisting is probably outdated, it's from the times the kernel had two Ralink drivers. Now there's only one, and you should not blacklist anything.
rc.conf is only for wired interfaces. For wireless you can do stuff manually, or use a manager - netcfg, wicd, networkmanager.
And that's that. For further help, you'll have to provide details about which commands you used and what their output is.
