How to setup a VPN on standard install

hi guys,
long time reader but first time poster.
my company bought a xserve as soon as leopard came out, we'd been sucked in by all the hype leading up to it. by the time i was doing an install a day trying to get it to work (i ultimately lost count of how many i've did all up), we realised we were in over our heads.
to cut it short, i finally got our xserve running in standard config doing the usually stuff, sharing files to macs and pcs, hosting an internal mail server, ichat server and ical server. all the basic stuff you need it to do, but not much more than you could on a regular that didn't cost $5000+ (we're poor aussies don't forget so we get gipped).
i know want to set her up to work as a vpn, keeping in mind that it currently does not serve as our dhcp server (this is performed by a basic wireless router). i'm scared as **** of doing anything dns related as even saying that acronym makes my head hurt and begin to cry (i'm sure most first time server admins, and probably even some seasoned vets, know what i mean).
what i'm after is a little guidance in turning our boring standard server into a decent unit that actually does what those marketing *$%#s claimed would be so easy and painless to setup (no offense to any marketing personnel reading this, i'm sure you're all good people at heart!!!).
just to clarify, my isp provides us a static ip address and our company's website is hosted externally via a hosting company, who also host our email.
any help would be greatly appreciated.

I've had some success if anybody is interested.
In my standard config of leopard server, the VPN option was turned off, and when I filled out the details to turn it on, it usually told me that I had something incorrect... one of the reasons for this I believe is because i was using the admin password for the shared key (sounds obvious now i know and also pretty stupid for even trying to do it). anyway, with this fixed it allowed me to turn on the VPN via the toggle switch and create the client config file. yah!!!! initial success.
next i forward the necessary ports on my router to the server (just to be clear, leopard isn't performing any network tasks, i.e. NAT, DNS, DHCP etc, other than those setup automatically in the std config).
with that done it was time to test the VPN, I installed the client file, filled out the appropriate fields, and bam we were on!!!
if i've been a bit vague or missed a step (i'm reliving yesterday's experience now and it's very likely that this has happened) just ask and i'll try to double back and fill in the gaps.
hope this instills some hope in fellow users that the BS sent out by marketing is achievable, maybe not when you want or as easily as you wanted it, but it can be done.
the current thing i'm stumped on now is why in the finder, the shared network drive tab disappears when you're connect to a vpn. i would have thought that the ability to search for network devices would have still been available on this. sure i can connect to the server manually, but i love simple stuff.

  • How to setup WRTSL54GS VPN?

I'm fairly network literate but I need a walk through for setting up a VPN on WRTSL54GS router and how to confirm settings are working.
I talked with Support (in the Phillipines)and advised me to set my DSL modem to bridge mode, done that and Internet connectivity is OK. But the documentation on configuring the VPN is very weak. For testing I am dropping the wireless on this router and connecting to a neighbors open wireless router and unable to connect to the VPN I setup. My router does have the latest version of the firmware.
I plan on using the VPN to connect to the network storage connected to the router when offsite.
    Thank you for your help.

That was the point of buying this router. I really don't want to leave my workstation on 24/7 but, prefer to have a low cost storage online dedicated to the purpose.
Is there a home based router with firewall, wireless, wired capability, with attached storage accessable from both inside and outside securely that does not do pass-through VPN but instead can act as a termination for the VPN?
I have configured the FTP server and have connected that way but that leaves the password and username transmitted in clear text. Any sniffer could pick up on that. I want to make this a secure connection even better if I could restrict the MAC address to my laptop only connecting.
I'm open to ideas. What have others done low cost?
What if I purchased low cost network storage with its own IP and placed it inside my home network, of course it would have a NAT'd non public IP. I suspect since the router is pass through VPN the storage would have to have VPN capability?
And I think I read something in the forum that if the VPN is setup only the VPN is allowed through and I would not be able to surf the net? Not quite sure of the details how this works. Might be another road block to using this router.
    Thanks in advance.

  • How to setup a vpn server

Can I setup my Time Capule 2TB as a VPN server so I can connect to my network from a remote (out-of-state) location or is there another way?

There is no vpn server in the TC so no you cannot use it that way.
If you want to use vpn .. buy a vpn endpoint modem or modem router or router depending on your broadband. Bridge the TC so it is simply a part of the network and all routing functions are handled by the vpn router.
If the TC is directly facing the internet.. ie you get the public IP on the wan interface.. you can connect by checking the remote access and using a decent password. Security is no where near as good as vpn but for occasional connection is probably OK. You can only use AFP protocol. So this must be done from a Mac computer. Just do a google search.. lots of sites.. lots of threads.
If the TC is not getting public IP then you can port forward AFP to the TC.. that is the only protocol still.. SMB is blocked by all ISP as too dangerous as half the computers in the world would be exposed.
There is a final issue.. you need either a static public ip or dynamic dns service. The TC does not have a dyndns client.. mobileme used to provide that service but is being discontinued. Cloud is now the way.. if you need a dyndns service read how to set this up..
    http://dyn.com/support/airport-time-capsule-with-dynamic-dns/
You need a personal domain for this to work.. note also the experimental aspect to it.
IMHO vpn with a vpn router is the way to go. All vpn routers have some dyndns client services.

  • MSI Z87-GD65 How to setup raid 0 before OS install

    Hi,
I am wanting to have my 2 SSDs in a raid 0 configuration and then install windows 8 on that. How do i go about doing this? I can't find the raid bios menu at all.
    Thanks

Quote from: Lizzo on 29-March-14, 02:16:27
    Enter BIOS and go to:
Settings\Advanced\Integrated Peripherals - Change SATA mode to RAID, then reboot and enter BIOS again.
    Go to:
    Settings\Advanced\Intel Rapid Storage Technology
Set up your RAID drives from there, reboot, install OS.
This is assuming UEFI installation. If you are using legacy you will need to enter the Raid bios during boot after enabling Raid.

  • How to setup the windows installed pxi to RT target

how to setup the windows installed pxi to RT target?

    Ranjith,
I think the answer for your 1st que is NO. In the sense, you can run the code, but it may not work precisely as it is supposed to...
A target can be said to be an RT, if & only if it has an RTOS installed in it, not just Windows, which is not a real-time OS.
Youcan run the existing code in Windows, but as I said earlier, it may not give you the actual results.
Finally, hereafter, pl dont use the term 'box' for a PXI. It is a chassis with a main module that runs on Windows or an embedded RT processor/conrtoller that runs on an RTOS like VxWorks or Phsr Lap.
Hope this helps you to some extent...

How to setup default gateway in a DHCP client. The default gateway will be the Ip address of the server that has RRAS installed, hence routing cabalities.

    Hi Bill,
Thank you for replying back...Yes, I was actually asking how do you set the default gateway address on the DHCP server?,
I believe I got the answer below:
To configure the DHCP default gateway option Click Start, point to Administrative Tools and then click DHCP. In the console tree, expand the applicable DHCP server, expand IPv4, and then right-click Scope Options Click Configure Options, check 003
Router, type the applicable Server name and IP address, and then click OK.

  • How to setup vpn-server in Mountain Lion 10.8.3?

Before I updated my mac mini server to 10.8.3 I used Server Admin to setup a vpn server. After the update Server Admin isn't supported anymore and my vpn settings are gone. Now i want to setup the server again, but have no clue what settings to enter where.
I suppose it starts with adding two vpn-interfaces: PPTP and LT2P.
But how further? I can't find a tutorial or manual.

    I do now :-)
And many thank, that's the application I was looking for. My vpn is back online. Well, the mac-part. I still can't connect with a Win7 system. Connecting to a vpn-server of another company works fine, so it's something in the configuration of de Mini Server.
    The error code is 629.
Hopefully someone can help me with this part too?

I just came across your answer to OKB Mr. sabretooth04, or HP expert!!! OKB, necessarily does not mean zero space left on a hard drive.  Indeed 99% of times, it means that the software that One is trying to download, is outdated and is not compatible with the system that one is running. Thus the hard drive refuses to download the current software for its running program.  And can only be resolved via the software producer.  Meaning; one needs to contact the software company to find out if there are any new patches that can accomodate the download to become compatible with the running program.

Update - it works ! At least I can connect to Mountain Lion (not server) from my iPhone using the VPN Server Configurator app.
    Here's what I did :
    1) download the app and install
    2) setup using the help files on the web page : http://www.greenworldsoft.com/product-vpn-server-help.html
    3) at the last stage you need to setup port forwardin on your router
    4) under Airport Utility 6.0 you cannot setup ports 500 or 4500 due to BTTM conflicts but setup the other 2 ports (1723 TCP and 1701 UDP), update airport extreme
    5) download Airport Utility 5.6 from here : download already extracted utility  it is in it's extracted form as is necessary under Mtn Lion (thanks to NetUse Monitor for the download - great app by the way)
    6) run 5.6 and setup port forwarding (Advanced-Port Mapping) for the other 2 ports (500 and 4500 UDP), update airport extreme
    7) that's it, I was able to connect to the VPN from my iPhone !

  • How to setup a Seamless Transaction Gateway with PayPal (Australia Only)

I've been working with the team at PayPal to allow BC Partners to set up a cost effective way to setup a Seamless Transaction Shopping Cart Process on their BC eCommerce website without the need for a 3rd Party Merchant Provider like eWay or Secure Pay or their bank. This is designed for entry level businesses who want to control their setup costs and keep all funds in one place (PayPal).
Currently BC doesn't support Paypal's Payments Pro plan in Australia so you are limited with either a non-seamless payment process or using a 3rd Party Merchant provider with can be costly.
Without going into too much detail, the setup on PayPal's side is a mixture of a couple of plans, and is a little complicated however through our discussions we come to an arrangement of any additional fee's associated with the setup being waived since this is more so of a technical workaround than anything else.
Basically PayPal is the merchant provider, and the customer doesn't leave your website when making a purchase through the Shopping Cart. The setup is only $25/month plus transaction fees of between 1.1 to 2.4% + 30 cents depending on the number of payments (this is just an initial guide and confirmed on your discussion with the PayPal).
Because the setup involves quite a few steps and departments I've arranged a contact that will fast track this process and is familiar with this unique setup.
How to setup PayPal for a Seamless Transaction Process
Sign up for PayPal Business account  Timeframe: <20 minutes
Email Peter [email protected] or phone (02) 8288 0333. CC me [email protected] or mention my name so he can correctly setup the process and apply the discounted pricing.
Prepare for the Verification process for the PayPal account (Proof of ID, Proof of Address, Business documents etc).
Wait for Account Verification. You will be informed to setup both PayFlow Pro* and Website Payments Pro (*the PayFlow payment will be waived as mentioned previously). Timeframe: up to 5 business days depending on swift supply of required documentation.
Wait for your Billing Agreement for Website Payments Pro once application has been approved. Sometimes they will receive a phone call to verify details of the application. Timeframe: Up to 72 hours
Login into your PayPal account to accept the Billing Agreement.
Notify Peter once the Billing Agreement has been accepted so your PayFlow Pro can be linked to your Website Payments Pro
Login into your Business Catalyst Website and navigate e-Commerce > Payment Gateways
Select PayPal PayFlow Payment Gateway (..,AU, ..)
Enter your Username, PayPal Password, and add VSA as the Partner
    Setting up PayPal Payments
If you also want to make payments via PayPal (ie, with the customers Pay Pal account) you can continue with setting up the PayPal Website Standard secure with your PayPal Customer ID and your PDT Token which you'll need to setup in your PayPal Account.
If you have any questions give me or Peter an email. I'll continue to update this document as I go.
Please note this setup is current for Australian Pay Pal Customers only. This process does not support re-occurring billing.

Dennis, sounds like you are having issues connecting to your network. Here is what we are going to do.
On your first question,  and second question for that matter, I would suggest using a WPA password. Our printers doe not associate with the other types as well as WPA. You should be able to do that, though I have not personally set up a router that way to have experience in how it will react with the networked devices. As for the issues you are having, once the settings are all in the correct order I am going to suggest we connect the printer to the network through the computer.
What you will do is install the printer using a USB connection, then re-run the setup software. Here there should be an option for USB to  Wireless. This will be the easiest way to be sure that all the settings are correctly transferred over.
