How to setup a wifi mesh network in a 6 story full brick home

Hi,
We have to create a solid wifi mesh network in a 6 story multi mil $ home. The home will have complete home automation and requires wifi crestron touch sceens to utilise the network and also all the IT hardware. There will be the ability to run cables to all access points however I am looking to build a power over ethernet mesh secure solution with also an external access point that will never break down or drop out. Each floor has more concrete then you can imagine however the floor span is no more then 30 meters with little walls. If we can create a vlan for crestron control systems then this will be the ideal situation. Your help is very much appricated with recommending a best solution.
Regards - Jay

Mr Davis has it pretty much nailed.
There are so many potential gotchas, depending on the front-end choices, there is no way (none, zip , nada, bupkis ...)to do this without (at least) one comprehensive survey by a real pro. If you talk to anyone that says this will be easy, say "thanks" then show them the door.
As an example, if you decided to go with 802.11g (2.4G), you get three channels total that won't overlap (1, 6, 11). Overlap will kill performance as it is seen as interference.
You will need to break the floorspace into "cells" such that no two adjacent cells will have the same channel assignments, but overlap enough to permit seamless roaming for things like VoIP.
In addition to the lateral cell structure, you may (site survey will determine) also have to consider the vertical, such that two cells on the same channel do not see each other through the floor, or by reflection up the stairwell or elevator shaft.
Adjusting the cell shape and diameter is done by changing the type of antenna (omni, sector, panel ...)and the power to each antenna.
The central controller system supports an "automatic" mode that theoretically could figure out these adjustments dynamically (within the propagation physic permitted by the antennas and environment) ... but auto modes are best used to maintain the operational design when things get dynanmic (like people walking around, pasing interference, passing Bluetooth, leaky microwave ovens ...)
This is just ONE very small piece of figuring all this stuff out. You need experienced eyes and equipment on-site, probably for a couple days depending on the ultimate application suite you decide to implement.
A VLAN for the touchscreen / control system is trivial (and common) compared to the other site engineering.
Good Luck, it sounds like a really cool & fun project.

  • How to setup a Class B network with WRT54GX ver. 2

    Hi all,
I bought a WRT54GX ver. 2 router. I wanna know how to setup the IP address say 128.1.50.136 with subnet mask 255.255.0.0 (Class B network)? By the way, 128.1.0.0 is my network zone.
If the router can't change, what should I do? Any other router support Class B network?
    Thanks!

I did but it doesn't work. It seems don't have 255.255.0.0 to select.
would you state more clear of how to do it? Thanks!
It does not have that because it does not support it... the router runs on CLASS C only because it was designed and made for SOHO only... bussiness lines of Linksys or Cisco can do that....but not this router...

  • How to setup a small office network

    Hello,
I am looking to setup a small office network comprising 6 G4 macs (existing computers) that have been upgraded to the newest OS version. What is the best way to go about networking these computers together in terms of being able to share files, internet connection, access to peripherals and also implementing a firewall.
Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you

1, Get a cable internet ISP account; depending on your service you should be able to secure a 5Mbps down and 2Mbps up on the cable e.g. Cox or Comcast.
    2. Get a good router. The mass market Linksys and Netgear routers aren't very good in terms of reliability. I use a ZyXEL P-330W router is the best I've ever seen. Its reliable and very efficient in terms of throughout. The Apple Airport Extreme is good.
    3. Set up the router to support UPnP. This way all computers will be able to share iChatAV video conferencing. If you enabled "port forwarding" only one Mac would be able to use iChatAV video conferencing.
    4. Set up your router for DHCP to dynamically issue Internet address to all your computers.
    5. Setup the wireless router for encryption such as WPA. This will encrypt wireless communication.
    6. Setup the wireless router for only your computers. You'll have to get the MAC/AirPort ID network addresses as expressed in terms of an xx:xx:xx:xx address. You can get this thru your Systems Preferences -> Network window -> AirPort (in the sidebar) -> Advanced button.
    7. If you have Ethernet in your office then skip steps 5 and 6 above.
    8. On each computer open up the System Preferences -> Sharing and check-off the File Sharing. Set your user access preferences appropriately.
9. Get a Network enabled All-in-one printer and setup Printer Sharing options. Hook-it up to your network and add your printer by clicking on the "+" sign in your "Print and Fax" Preferences.
    10. Don't enable Apple Firewall on each Mac. The router will be the Firewall.
Ok. That's the short-hand.. plug it all in and go!

  • How to setup peer to peer network with Vista machine.

    Hello,
I just got my very first Apple computer last week and I'd like to copy some files from my Dell PC with Vista Premium installed. I don't have a wireless network setup yet (hopefully soon), but I'd like to copy some files from my PC to my Mini. I was wondering if it were possible to network the two systems using just an ethernet cable between the two.
Might someone know how to set this up or refer me to a document that explains all the steps needed to accomplish this?
    Thanks in advance,
    Jeff

Apple have a page that talks you through doing this:

Probably a good place to start.

Instructions for using your BlackBerry as a Tethered Modem can be found here.
You should check with your Carrier before doing this as many charge very high fees for this use without a plan, and it's pretty expensive even with a plan.

  • How to setup my wife's iPad to share our joint iTunes account

I have an ipad2.  I have an apple ID.  My wife and I have always shared my iTunes account on our 1 home pc.  My wife just got herself an ipad2.  I need help setting up her iPad so that we can share iTunes, but keep everything else separate.  Do I need to get her a separate apple ID or use mine?  We would like to be able to video chat, and I can't figure out how we would do that with the same apple id.  I have already logged into her iPad with my ID, so if I need to change it, how do I do that?

If you connect her iPad to your computer's iTunes and select it on the left-hand side, then on the right-hand side you can use the various tabs (Music, Apps etc) to control which of the iTunes content to sync to it - and that selection should be remembered each time you connect it, so you can control what goes onto each iPad. That way you can share iTunes content and you only need to have the one iTunes account
In terms of FaceTime and Messages then you can assign your own email address (you don't need separate iTunes accounts) to those apps on your own iPads : Settings > Messages > Receive At and similarly Settings > FaceTime

Suggest that you download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion. It will have the settings that you are looking for.
You can keep both AirPort Utility 5.6 and 6.0 on your Mac and use the one that you need.

  • WiFi MIDI network setup is terribly slow

    Hi all
    What i have:
    1. macmini (late 2012)
    2. ipad 4
What i need - i need to create WiFi MIDI network for some music creation process.
    The problem:
When i open MIDI Studio window and then click on Network - is nothing happened. But MIDI Studio is no responsive. ( i see color-wheel cursor)
    This is long-long-long time.
Then it open window where i can setup network. I press connect to iRom (it my iPad) and waiting again. 5 or 12 seconds before it connect..
    The question:
How can i do that process faster as possible ? Why MIDI Studio all times try to find something.
This is the same iPad and Same macmini all times when i run that. But all times it waiting something, and i waiting also.
How can i speed up that? May be this is WiFi problem and i need some cable?
    Thanks!

    Is problem partially solved:
This is occur because OSX have a two connections in one time:
    1. - wired Ethernet connected to router
    2. - WiFi for connecting to iPad
When i disable Ethernet - the MIDI Network setup work really fast.
But now i have another question: How i can use both Ethernet + WiFi, without this terribly stuck ?

  • I have setup wireless at home but when I travel how do I find another wireless network?

I have setup wireless at home, but when I travel, how do I find another wireless network?

Depends on where you are. Most all hotels/motels have wireless. There are Internet cafes, libraries, Starbucks, and many other places providing WiFi service.
In your iPad's Network settings you will usually find displayed all detected wireless systems. Not all of them may be usable unless they provide free access or you have a paid access membership. You should find this discussed in the user manual:

How do I change or reset my password for my wifi? I have forgotten my initial password when I setup the wifi and now cant use it with my iPod but it still works with my iPad as the password option doesn't come up like the iPod.

If you are saying that the iPod asks for the password for the network and you do not know it, what may work is to turn on iCloud keychain for the iPod and iPad., Thet may sync the password from the iPad to the iPod

Otherwise you will have to go into the router settings and reset the wifi password in the router

  • How to setup multiple base station under one network?

How to setup multiple base station under one network? I have 6 rooms but one airport base station makes really difficult to get good signal from every rooms. I wonder if I can setup multiple airport base stations talking to each other under the same network to build up the signal strength will help solve this problem. But, is it possible? How?

One route would be to utilize a "roaming" network. In a roaming network, you would connect multiple AirPort Extreme Base Stations (AEBS) to the same Ethernet. Of course, this would require that your home is already wired for Ethernet.

  • How to setup a infiniband network

How to setup an infiniband network??
Our Customer has 2 x t5-4 wirh ZS3 using infiniband. Do you have any white paper where explain how we can do
    Thanks in advance

Perhaps you can start with the product documentation for those T5-4 systems:
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E29659_01/index.html
When you are on that page, find the Search field at the top and type "infiniband" into it.
You might find additional information specific to the hardware by doing that.

  • I currently have a D-Link DI-604 broadband router with windows computers.  How can I add wifi to the network for use with ipad?  Can I use AirPort Express?

I currently have a D-Link DI-604 broadband router with windows computers.  How can I add wifi to the network for use with ipad?  Can I use AirPort Express?

Yes. You can directly connect an 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) using an Ethernet cable. The AXn would then just need to be configured as a bridge to allow the D-Link to continue to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all network clients connected to either router.
In this configuration, the AXn would broadcast a wireless network for your wireless network clients to connect to.
