How to setup a wireless printer

I was wandering if anyone out there knows how to setup a wireless printer without spending a lot of money. I have a dell photo 962 printer and a wrt54g router. I have tried to setup the printer on my laptop but it will not let me do so unless I connect it directly to the printer. My computers are running windows xp. Thanks for your help.

well for that you need to setup a printer as network printer, if your printer have networking capabilities...if not then you need to buy print server...

    How can I get wireless printing with my ipad?

    Best way is to use an AirPrint compatible printer:

    If your printer is not AirPrint compatible, you might want to take a look at Printopia.

    How to add a wireless printer to airprint?

    Only the printer manufacturers can add AirPrint support to their printers via firmware updates. If your printer isn't listed on this page as supporting AirPrint, then does the manufacturer have their own app in the app store that supports it ? If not then there are third-party printer apps such a PrintCentral Pro and Print n Share which might work with it.

    How do I add wireless printer or Direct tv

    These devices would be added the same way that any other wireless device is added as a client to a network......
    1)  Scan to select the network
    2)  Enter the wireless network password
    Keep in mind that DirecTV cannot connect to a wireless network if there are special characters.....like an apostrophe, asterisk, dollar sign, etc......in the wireless network name.
    So if your wireless network is named something like Ernestomelia's Wireless Network, DirecTV will not be able to to connect. Instead, the network should read something like ernestomelia network. A shorter name with no spaces would be better.
    Your printer might have similar requirements, but you did not provide the make or model number of the device....so we don't have much to go on here. In general, you would want to contact support at the printer manufacturer for more specific information.

    Unplug the USB cable.  Now go to Start > All Programs > Hewlett-Packard > Deskjet 3050 > Add a Device.  Run the program and choose Wireless as the installation type.
    Follow the directions.  It will ask you to connect a USB cable temporarily.  Do not connect until it asks and remove it when it tells you.
    Finally, when you are done, go to Control Panel > Devices & Printers and delete the USB instance of the printer so you don't get confused when printing.

  • How to setup a network printer via http

    I have a router with a USB printer attached to it. It looks like this:
    Printer status: Ready
    Printer location: http://192.168.2.1:1631/printers/My_Printer
    In Windows you setup a network printer and the printers address is the http address above. How do you add this type of printer in the printer setup utility on Mac OSX 10.4.11 and 10.5.x?

    For OS X 10.5, you use the following settings
    As mentioned by bdaqua, open Print & Fax and click the IP icon and then select IPP from the top drop menu. Then in the Address field just enter the IP address; don't enter the leading 'http://' and don't enter the :631 (the mere fact that you have selected the IPP protocol means that it will communicate on port 631)
    Then in the queue field you can enter printers/My_Printer, although some router perform a translation for the shared printer so you only need to enter the shared printer name in the queue field.
    As for the name and location fields, these are just free text for the local user and have no bearing on the queue details.
    And as for 10.4 I have no idea or way to test this at home. But if you use a mix of mine and bdaqua's information you should be okay.

  • How to configure a wireless printer

    Hello guys,
    I've just got a new MBP 13' with retina display.
    I do have also a CANON PIXMA printer with wireless device (it says enabled for air print and compatible with Mac) thus I would like to configure and add it to my MBP and possibly to my IPAD and IPHONE.
    I have a wireless network at home and it works fine with my MBP.
    I thank you all in advance for the help provided.
    Roberto

    There is NO Wireless Printing, that is a Misnomer. You print over your network. It doesn't matter how the printer or the computer connects to your network, it could be by WiFi or over an Ethernet cable, both of them have to be connected to the same LAN (Local Area Network).
    So the first step is to connect the Printer to your home LAN. It has to get an IP address from your router or modem/router combo box used to connect to the internet. Once that is done then you can connect To the printer from your computer that is connected to that same LAN.

    As far as I can tell your printer only has a USB connection, right?
    If so, you may be able to buy a wireless print server, but they are somewhat difficult to set up.  If you buy one, get one the same brand as your wireless router (I don't think HP makes one for this printer from my quick search).

  • How to fix single wireless printer showing up as several (bonjour) printers?

    I have the following problem with a wireless printer/scanner connected using bonjour (Samsung SCX-3205W):
    When using the device in wireless mode, after a period, the single printer shows up in the selection list as tens or even hundreds of seperate printers. Applications showing/selecting printers or scanners slow down dramatically and sometimes stop responding (beach ball rotating for long periods)
    Below is an example of what is shown in e.g. printer selection lists (see also attachment):
    Samsung SCX 3200 Series (SamsungSCX3205)(28060)
    Samsung SCX 3200 Series (SamsungSCX3205)(28061)
    Samsung SCX 3200 Series (SamsungSCX3205)(28062)
    Samsung SCX 3200 Series (SamsungSCX3205)(28063)
    Samsung SCX 3200 Series (SamsungSCX3205)(28064)
    Samsung SCX 3200 Series (SamsungSCX3205)(28065)
    Samsung SCX 3200 Series (SamsungSCX3205)(28066)
    Samsung SCX 3200 Series (SamsungSCX3205)(28067)
    Samsung SCX 3200 Series (SamsungSCX3205)(28068)
    Samsung SCX 3200 Series (SamsungSCX3205)(xxxxx)
    The device works fine using USB or ethernet connection but problems arise when using the wireless connection. After adding the printer using System Preferences / Print & Scan it seems to work fine, atleast for a while. After some time the printer seems to multiply itself in the printer lists (e.g. when adding new printer or using Preview or Image Capture to scan and choosing a network device.)
    I'm using OS X 10.7.3 and have the latest drivers for the printer (Samsung SCX 3200 series 1.01.01)
    Im connected to the printer through a wireless router/adsl-modem
    The problem seems to start (i.e. printer starts to "multiply") after the printer goes into power save mode. (The power save function can't be turned off, only set to max 120min)
    Anyone have similar problems with other wireless printers or any idea what might be causing this? Or how I could fix it?
    Best regards,
    JL

    I haven't received any replies to the question I recently posted, but one work-around that HP suggested is to use different scanning software. Instead of Image Capture, I used the HP Scan.app that came with my all-in-one printer. I haven't seen those rectangles in my PDFs since switching.

  • Help! Confusion over how to setup intel3945 wireless and rc.conf

    Hi,
    I'm very confused.  I've already read through all the wikis and searched many forum posts.  I can't get my wireless intel3945 to work on my dell vostro 1400.
    Iwconfig says the wireless card is at wlan0 and dmesg | grep iwl says it has detected it.  However, when I try a iwlist wlan0 scan it returns :
    wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down
    I think the problem is that I don't know how to setup rc.conf correctly or use the command line to test the wireless.  Forum posts say many different things on how this is done.
    These are the steps I have taken:
    uninstalled the ipw3945 and ipw3945-ucode and ipw3945d.
    installed iwlwifi and iwlwifi-3945-ucode
    in my rc.conf modules, added iwl3945.
    I'm not sure how to setup the networking section, this what I have now:
    lo="lo 127.0.01"
    eth0="dhcp"
    wlan0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(lo etho)
    gateway="default gw 192.168.1.1"
    ROUTES=(!gateway)
    And in my dameons I have 'network'.
    How can I scan for networks and connect to them on the commandline?  I'd prefer not to use a gui tool because they never work and never tell me why they're not working.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Cheers!

    broch wrote:I have ipw3945 and iwl3945 working with wpa2 (or vpn)
    (less complicatd than the above)
    don't use netcfg2
    Why?
    no particular reason.
    Simply when I configured wireless, netcfg2 wasn't available. Since then it (wireless) works, so not having any problems, I did not modify network setup. Next week or so I am going to install Arch on my daughter's laptop (per her request ) so I will try netcfg2.
    So this is what I have for ipw3945 wpa2 or iwl3945 with wpa2
    Below you will find a lot of words so read slowly but there is not much actual work
    ipw3945 setup
    kernel 2.6.23.x (Arch or vanilla)
    or
    kernel 2.6.24/2.6.24-gitX (patched with ipw3945 patch from gentoo -> compiling separate module for 2.6.24 may fail. if you want kernel patch I can post a link)
    for default kernel install Arch packages for ipw3945, ipw3945d, ipw3945-ucode
    or
    if you want to compile modules, you will also need ieee80211 (first uninstall kernel's default, then install from sources otherwise ieee80211 from sources may refuse to install)
    modify /etc/rc.conf
    DAEMONS=(.... @ipw3945d @network ....)
    that is all you don't need to add ipw3945 to MODULES=(.....)
    because ipw3945d will automatically start ipw3945 module
    do not list eth1 in network config section:
    lo="lo 127.0.0.1"
    eth0="dhcp"
    INTERFACES=(eth0)
    as you see, in my case only eth0 (wired) is listed and eth1 (wireless) is not listed
    now you are done with basic network configuration for ipw3945, restart network/computer to bring up ipw3945d/ipw3945
    check if modules are up and basic network is set:
    #lsmod | grep ipw
    #ifconfig -a
    or
    #iwconfig
    if all is o.k. configure
    WPA2:
    configure router for wpa2
    client: basically follow Arch wiki:
    configure wpa_supplicant (installed already of course)
    #wpa_passphrase your_ssid your_psk
    keep terminal window open with created encrypted wpa passphrase  and in the second terminal window edit /etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    ctrl_interface=/var/run/wpa_supplicant
    network={
            ssid="your_ssid"
            scan_ssid=1
            proto=WPA RSN
            key_mgmt=WPA-PSK
            pairwise=CCMP TKIP
            group=CCMP TKIP
                    psk=whatever_output_from_wpa_passphrase
    Above pairwise and group setup will depend on your router (network capabilities)
    almost done:
    run
    #wpa_supplicant -Bw -Dwext -i eth1 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    the above assumes that your ipw3945 is set as eth1 (from iwconfig output)
    to connect to the network I am using "wireless assistant" http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show.ph … tent=21832
    that is all for ipw3945. You may automate network starting/connecting to wpa2 by writing simple script.
    iwl3945
    --kernel 2.6.23.x
    install iwlwifi and iwlwifi-3945-ucode
    --kernel 2.6.24.x
    install only iwlwifi-3945-ucode as kernel has iwlwifi module incorporated
    default iwlwifi does not support LED so I suggest to install something like knemo for kde to show active network icon. The latest iwlwifi does support LED but it is not yet incorporated into 2.6.24 vanilla kernel.
    if you have kernel 2.6.23.x with external iwlwifi module
    modify /etc/rc.conf
    and add iwlwifi to
    MODULES=(.....)
    nothing else is required.
    if you have kernel 2.6.24 with integrated iwlwifi module you don't have to edit /etc/rc.conf
    As in the case of ipw3945, I do not list wireless interface (wlan0) in /etc/rc.conf
    for kernel 2.6.23.x
    load module/restart network or simply restart computer
    check if module is up
    #lsmod | grep iwl
    #iwconfig
    or
    #ifconfig -a
    WPA2
    same wpa_supplicant.conf as above, so if you already have it no need for modifications.
    start wpa2
    #wpa_supplicant -Bw -Dwext -i wlan0 -c/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf
    the only difference in the command is wireless interface: wlan0
    connect to the network, again I am using "wireless assistant"
    vpn
    I am using cisco vpn. Client is provided by vpn host, cisco does not provide vpn client for individual download, but you can find it on line.
    vpn host will provide pcf file for you
    - install vpnclient
    - copy your VPN profile (vpn.pcf) to the
    /etc/CiscoSystemsVPNClient/Profiles
    directory
    -- start vpn client
    /opt/cisco-vpnclient/bin/vpnclient connect vpn pcf_file_name
    provide username and password and off you go
    From my experience none of linux gui for vpn works reliably so you will have to resort to the command line.
    That is all, a lot of writing, but actual ipw3945 and iwl3945 configuration is straightforward and very short.
    Hopefully this will work for you.
    forgot to add regarding vpnclient (cisco)
    you will have to modify
    /etc/init.d/vpnclient_init
    line 38 and line 101
    replace
    /sbin/lsmod
    with
    /bin/lsmod

  • IBook, Gateway Laptop and 2 printers, how to set up wireless printing?

    I have an iBook G4 with an Airport Card, my wife has a Gateway Solo with a wireless card. We have an existing wireless internet connection. We have two Epson printers that we would like to be able to print to wirelessly.
    I'm assuming that I need to connect both printers to a wireless router, and I assume it may be another router and not the one we're using for internet. What do I need to do to get both of us to be able to print wirelessly to either printer from our laptops?
    Would appreciate some help. Thanks!

    Well I spent a lot of trial and error getting this to work, however I use the Airport Extreme (white UFO thing) router from apple. From the router that is transmitting your wireless connection, there should be some way to hook up your printer(s) via ethernet cables. If your printers are too far away from the router, you may have to purchase an additional router. My Airport extreme can only utilize one printer at once (yours may be able to have multiple peripherals connected to it). In order to use two, I would have to pruchase an additional airport transmitter (like an Airport Express) and have the 2nd printer wired to that.
    The only hangup I had was figuring out why my windows computers didn't see the wireless printer. I needed to have installed Bonjour (Apple's peripheral communication software) on all the computers on the network and it can be downloaded on Apple's support web page. Depending on your router, you may not need to.
    Your router, whatever it may be, should work in a similar fashion. Consult your router's manual for the proper connection methods/possibilities. Hope this info helps you some.
