How to setup an iTunes server

i'm wanting to setup an itunes server. iwant this mac to stay in a closet and be the main mac to suplly itunes content to 3 AppleTV2, Laptop (win), 3 mac desktops iPod, 2 iPhones and future iPad( i hope). looking to do something on the cheap. say a MDD G4 or a used mac mini? I would like to have alot of storage. I will be loading all my movie on this server.
Any help would be great. I have no idea where to start.

I've got the same problem and questions. I've been leaning towards buying a used/refurbished Mac Mini, throwing on a 2 or 3 TB drive (preferably Thunderbold, but FireWire 800 would be sufficient) and then just have it sit in my wiring closet witha 1Gbps Ethernet connection to my home router.
The problem is the cost...Going the Mac Mini route to simply get an iTunes media server seems pricey. There have been rumors in the past of this sort of functionality showing-up on either an Airport Extreme or a Time Capsule Apple box, but that never seems to happen...
I have 1 AppleTV1 and 2 AppleTV2's and for the storage reason, I actually like my old AppleTV1 better than the newer version, simply because I can have 160GBs of movies/media always available. I like the added functionality in the AppleTV2's, but without a cheap iTunes server, I actually think Apple's move to the AppleTV2 was a setback, rather than a move forward.

It depends on the operating system you are using. If you are using *nix then sendmail needs to be configured.

I don't know if you've already solved it yourself, but I had this problem too. Try signing out of iTunes Store under 'Settings', then signing back in with JUST your iTunes user name, with no '.mac' or '.me' suffix. If, for example, your usual sign-in method is '[email protected]' try using 'joebloggs'.

How to setup Mobile Access Server

Hi,
I am trying to setup Mobile Access Server on my Mac Mini Server. The setup I have is a small network behind a Airport Extreme. I would like to give all users access to services using Mobile Access Server and was hoping initial setup was going to take care of that....no such luck.
What do I fill in for the local servers? How do I access this service from the outside the lan? How do I need to configure my Airport (with the other services, it happened almost automatically from the security pane).

Hi,
In the field for local server you just type in the local dns name for your calendar server, mail server etc... Also select which port you want publish externally and the the correct port your service is actually using on your lan (Selected under advanced tab). Make sure your mobile access server can resolv your hostnames correctly. It should point to an local ip. If an nslookup shows your public ip, you have to correct your local dns server (This is often called split dns configuration.)
To access this from outside your LAN you have setup NAT and permit the port you have configure your mobile access server to be the incomming port. How exactly you do that on the airport I am not sure, but I am sure it is explained in the user manual for the airport.

I've configured Net8 and the service names and such, however i still cannot connect to my oracle server. The error message is "Service Name not resolved".

On the web server, check your tnsnames.ora file. Is the database correctly defined here?
Also, search this forum for "could not resolve service name". It is the most common problem.

There are a number of different types of proxy servers. The AirPort, like most Internet routers, perform as a very basic tunneling proxy or gateway by providing NAT services.
What are you trying to use a proxy server for? Are you planning on setting up a dedicated proxy server device or use a router for some proxy functions like monitoring or scanning traffic inbound/outbound of your network?

Anyway I notice that after i follow the guide to setup the admin and managed server, I only able to access the web apps on admin server. I can not access web apps for managed server.
I setup the admin server using port 7001 and managed server using port 7003 based on oracle guide.
I found weird here. when I browse to http://adminserver:7001/apps, it works. But when i browse to http://managedserver:7003/apps it does not work.
But funny thing is when i browse to http://adminserver:7003/apps, it works.
I confuse that which configuration I have done is incorrect and have this result???
besides that I notice that in the nodemanager setting...the listening address is set to localhost and it works. If i configure it to IP address, it will give me errors.

How to setup a vpn server

Can I setup my Time Capule 2TB as a VPN server so I can connect to my network from a remote (out-of-state) location or is there another way?

There is no vpn server in the TC so no you cannot use it that way.
If you want to use vpn .. buy a vpn endpoint modem or modem router or router depending on your broadband. Bridge the TC so it is simply a part of the network and all routing functions are handled by the vpn router.
If the TC is directly facing the internet.. ie you get the public IP on the wan interface.. you can connect by checking the remote access and using a decent password. Security is no where near as good as vpn but for occasional connection is probably OK. You can only use AFP protocol. So this must be done from a Mac computer. Just do a google search.. lots of sites.. lots of threads.
If the TC is not getting public IP then you can port forward AFP to the TC.. that is the only protocol still.. SMB is blocked by all ISP as too dangerous as half the computers in the world would be exposed.
There is a final issue.. you need either a static public ip or dynamic dns service. The TC does not have a dyndns client.. mobileme used to provide that service but is being discontinued. Cloud is now the way.. if you need a dyndns service read how to set this up..

You need a personal domain for this to work.. note also the experimental aspect to it.
IMHO vpn with a vpn router is the way to go. All vpn routers have some dyndns client services.

How to setup 2 iTunes Libraries with 2 different HD locations? HELP please!

I am so confused how this is supposed to work! I've searched all over the forums, Apple discussion board, and support section, and the only thing I can find tells you how to press the Option key when loading iTunes. DUH! That's the easy part! But how in the heck do you set up the libraries? Why is this not documented anywhere?
So basically I have a MBP, and ALL of my iTunes stuff is on an external USB hard drive. What I would like to do is have that external hard drive REMAIN as my main library, the one I sync my iPod, iPhone, Apple TV, etc... but would like to COPY my music files only (about 35GB) to my MBP on the internal drive, so I can have all MUSIC files with me. I would not sync with this library, just play it on my laptop on occasion. Isn't this do-able?
Where I am having trouble is this: I held down Option, loaded a brand new library, and figured I need to go in the Prefs and tell it where to get the music files, so I noticed it showed the external drive there. I changed it to my local folder, hoping that's where I would copy the music files to, but then noticed when I loaded iTunes and the MAIN library, it automatically changed my iTunes location to the new local drive I just set for the other library. This makes no sense to me as if iTunes forces you to have only ONE choice for the source of the files, what's the point of multiple libraries? I want a different location for each of the two libraries!
Clearly I don't have something set right, or I am missing a step. Can someone please help me ASAP?

One more thing - what's the best way to copy my music only, to my local drive after setting this up? I tried opening iTunes and selecting all of the music files and dragging it to a local folder, and it got stuck for about 30 seconds then didn't do jack. I don't get why I'm having such a hard time with this.

But my iMac brock down and I still haven't finished ripping the CDs. So aftering sending my iMac to repare, "how do I set up my (NEW) ITunes Library. So that I can continue rippng the songs and will not ruin the existing (ripped) songs"?
