Questions?

In order to enable Guest networking, the AirPort Extreme must be configured as your "main" Internet router. In this configuration, Connection Sharing = Share a Public IP address. The Extreme would be connected directly to the Internet modem and NOT downstream of another router with NAT enabled.
In this configuration, the Guest network would provide access ONLY to the Internet and NOT to your LAN.

Mmm, generally you don't need to do much port mapping in an extreme. Not sure I understand you.  What does the d-link do?

  • E4200 Change Guest Network Name

Is it possible to change the Guest Network Name on the E4200? And if so, is it possible to do so without having to do a complete reset of the router and without using the Cisco Connect software?

Yes you need to download and install the Cisco connect Software.  That is the only way to manage the Guest account for the router (unless things have changed).   Be aware the new SSID will still have the -guest tagged to it.
Linksys is the only vendor that does this.  Also the Guest account in NOT encrypted for security.  I would not use it in a public place at all.  This is for home use only.  All other manufacturers except Linksys, can use full WA2-AES for encrypted information on their Guest Networks.  You can also name your Guest SSID to anything you want.  Something to think about.

  • E2000 Setup Guest Network

I've had E2000 set up with Main Network and Guest Network for 2 yrs.  My son got a new pc and wasn't getting internet connection and was told to push reset on router.  When he did that internet connection was lost on all devices.   I manually was able to get my pc setup and then the other devices.  The only thing I don't have is the guest network for his pc which I had before.
Is the Cisco Connect software cd the only way to setup guest network?  If I originally set it up with a cd, it's been misplaced.  I don't see it listed among my software programs.  Is there a download for Cisco Connect?  If I download and install Cisco Connect is there anyway to keep it from wiping out all my settings on my other devices?  Can I just setup the guest network?
While guests are using the guest network is their personal data secure like the main network?

The Guest access feature can only be managed using the Cisco Connect software. I believe the Linksys E2000 doesn’t have any guest settings built-in on its web-based utility which means you have to use their Cisco Connect software to activate the guest feature of the router.  Cisco Connect wouldn’t wipe out the settings on the computer but it requires resetting the router to factory settings before it can be successfully reinstalled. In terms of security, the guest network is secured but it’s tricky (this put me insane before seeing it as an open network) because it still shows up as an unsecured network since its security is through the browser itself upon going to the internet. Overall, the guest network is a separate secured network that provides internet access for your guests. Try using the links below to resolve your issue.

  • How to setup private network in oracle rac

    Hi all,
Iam trying to setup oracle 2-NODE RAC ,
now i stuck in setup private network..
how to setup private network, what i have to do for that.
please help us provide step by step process

The loop is nothing but a network cable connecting two nodes on same port with a private IP address (something like 10.0.01 and 10.0.0.2) which is not accessible by any other machine in the network (except 2 nodes obviously ).
Note that cross over cables are not supported for the Cluster Interconnect. And cross over cables limit the cluster to only 2 nodes, which may not be enough for many RAC deployments.
    Cheers,

  • E4200v2 - Guest Network Name: STRANGE behavior!

on a E4200v2, the Guest Network Name is not behaving rationally!
I have 2 E4200v2's, running 2.0.37, bought at same time and configured identically, including both in BRIDGE mode (access points only) and both with the 2.4ghz network name is "acme".
On one device the Guest Network Name is correct "acme-guest" but on the other device it is "cisco08996-guest".
(Also, the even wierder thing is that 08996 is not the correct serial number for this device, it's really 08273, so you'd expect it to default back to "cisco08273" but it never does)
I have tried many things to try to get it to revert to "acme-guest" but it just won't budge.  It seems like some sort of deep-seated bug in the configuration settings.
    I've tried:
    * reboot the device
    * disable Guest Access then reboot then re-enable
    * disable 2.4Ghz WiFi & Guest Access, then reboot, then re-enable both
    Nothing works!
I don't really have time to reset & redo this devices config from scratch, and it's a very busy device anyway.  So I'd much rather there was a way to fix this problem without downtime to the users.
Anyone faced this same problem?  Any solutions or tricks??
    Thanks in advance!

If the router is set to Bridge Mode, Guest Access is not going to work. Wireless devices would see the network broadcasting but it is not going to work.
Not true actually.  I find it has worked great.  And another user on these boards (Counsil?) has said likewise.
The article/point you refer to is talking about cascading routers, which we're NOT doing.  And it also talks about LAN-to-LAN access, which we're NOT doing.
We are just using Guest Network to share the Internet securely which it seems to do fine.
So I'm back to my original question about the Guest Network Name... anybody have any experience with the behavior I reported in my opening post?

  • Would like to setup guest network apple airport extreme will only allow limited access

imac 10.9.3 connected to internet with airport extreme /xfinity router trying to setup guest network can't connect to internet

The guest network feature of the Apple routers will work correctly when the Apple device connects to a simple modem.......not a modem/router or gateway type of device.
If the guest network feature is important to you, check with your Internet Service Provider to see if they can supply you with a simple modem......which will then allow the guest network feature to work correctly on your network.

  • How to arrive Password expiration situation in Cisco Router

    Hi,
i have to test something on cisco router so i have to achieve this following scenario :-
I am trying to login using ssh username & passoword. so i need to expire this username & password on router.
Anybody tell me how to get this situation in my cisco router.
    Thanks,
    Pranay

    Pranay,
Here is a guide on configuring the SSH username and password on your Cisco device:
    http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/security-vpn/secure-shell-ssh/4145-ssh.html
You will need to setup the VTY lines, as well as setup a password in order for this to work.
Judging from the screen shot, you will need to run the commands listed in Global Configuration mode. (configure terminal)
    Example:
    Router#config t
Router(config)# username Pranay priviledge 15 secret 0 yourpassword
I hope this helps. Please let me know if you need further assistance.

  • Time machine setup - how to change 'wireless network name' and settings?

I have moved laptop to Mountain Lion.
This is the first time to backup to Timecapsule.
I went to Settings then Select Disk and selected existing Time Machine.
It took more than 30 minutes and seemed stuck on 'Preparing ....".
I cancelled and tried to 'Setup Time Capsule not  listed"...
The system recognised the Time Capsule but I see that the network settings is my old 'wireless network' name.
How do I change this to the correct network name and ensure that the settings are correct?
I think if this is corrected, the backup will work.
    Thanks in advance.

On the Home screen of the product control panel, touch the right arrow ( ) to view more options.
    Touch Setup ( ).
    Touch Network .
    Touch Wi-Fi Protected Setup .
    Touch PIN .
Touch Start . The product displays a PIN.
NOTE:The product begins a timer for approximately two minutes to allow you time to enter the PIN on the networking device.
Enter the PIN on the WPS-enabled router or other networking device.

    Solved!

Like dalime said you have to set the Router name and then the guest account is generated based on that.  But it's a bit dumb.  If you've configured your router name from the web panel or after you setup your guest account it will generate a generic Cisco name.
    Solution:
    1) Turn off Guest
    2) Change the router name (Like dalime showed)
    3) (cancel) the silly usb key interchange request
    4) Change the router name back to what it should be
    5) (cancel) the silly usb key interchange request
    6) Turn on Guest and now it will recognize the correct router name to add "-guest" in the end of

  • How to setup a network with a time capsule, airport extreme and an airport express?

    Hello.
First I want to make it clear all my knowledge off wireless networks is going on forums on the internet, before a couple of months ago I didn't realize wireless networking was so intricate so forgive my lack of experience.
I just bought a time capsule (today, 4th generation), I have an airport extreme bought in January 2011 (they just got refreshed so mine is now one generation old) and the same with my airport express (bought in January).
I originally bought the airport extreme and setup a wireless network using the dual band setup.  I have no issues with the 5ghz network and most of my devices run on wireless n so I had no issues with them.  my only two wireless devices that can not use the 5ghz network is my iPhone 4's which use wireless n but it has to use the 2.4ghz signal.  Problem is in my apartment I am bombarded with other peoples 2.4ghz networks so my signal is terrible 10-15 feet from the airport extreme.  Near my extreme I am getting signal ranges around 15mb to 20 mb.  When Im about 15 minutes away in my bedroom (so one wall in between) my signal plummets to 1-2 mb. sometimes as low as 0.17mb which is not good.  I got the airport express to extend my range and placed it in my bedroom. .  After setting up the airport express the signal still was terrible.  I researched and realized that if the signal strength ***** then the airport express cant boost the signal as much which makes sense in hind sight.  I then researched setting up a roaming network or a WDS network.  Per research a WDS network was not recommended b/c I was not using a wireless g network.  I attempted to create a roaming network and then realized that you can not use an airport express in a roaming network.  This has led me to now buy a time capsule.
First, in my setup do I or should I have the time capsule as the primary?  I believe its more powerful than the airport extreme but Im not sure if that matters in a network that is distributing wifi from ethernet (thats how I am connected the extreme and the time capsule)
    so can I do
cable modem ETHERNET  Airport extreme(in the living room where its always been and works great in that immediate area) (3rd generation)  ETHERNET Time Capsule(in the bedroom where I usually get poor signal) (4th gen)  and then an airport express connecting to the 2.4ghz signal in the bedroom where the time capsule also is EXTENDING the wireless range?
or should it be the time capsule first bc its more powerful?
I tried setting up this setup and everything is green but I don't know if what I am doing is actually working on full cylinders b/c I am confused on some aspects.  mainly  on the airport extreme which is the primary device I have under the wireless tab selected create a wireless network and on the time capsule it also is on create a wireless network with the network name being exactly the same.  Should it be changed to extend a wireless network? and then bridge mode?  Should I have different channels for the different devices that are on 2.4ghz?
I am open to hear ANY suggestions, or ideas to improve my setup.  PLEASE PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!, lol  its been 5 long months of poor internet in my bedroom where my wife has her setup with a roku box and wifi tv (I have those hardwired for now) but mainly for her iPad and iPhone b/c its so bad sometimes she has to turn wifi off and use 3G.  I have same issue in my bathroom, sometimes Im getting decent signal and sometimes its so bad I can't open the link on an RSS feed in safari which I have to assume doesn't require that much bandwith?
I have no wireless g devices.  The only device I need 2.4ghz for is my iPhone 4's but they both use n also.  All my other deivices connect on 5ghz and my 5ghz network is decent, a lot better than the 2.4ghz network atleast.

You wrote so much that I find it hard to address all your concerns.  However, here are some thoughts:
    1) I'd configure the Time Capsule as the "main" router, connected directly to your cable modem.  Configure it to "create a wireless network" and to "Allow this network to be extended".  Configure the other devices to "Extend a wireless network".
    2) Put any device that's extending the network half way between the main router and the wireless clients.  If the signal from the main router is weak at the cllient's location, then the extending device will also receive a weak signal.

  • How to setup a network printer via http

I have a router with a USB printer attached to it. It looks like this:
    Printer status: Ready
    Printer location: http://192.168.2.1:1631/printers/My_Printer
In Windows you setup a network printer and the printers address is the http address above. How do you add this type of printer in the printer setup utility on Mac OSX 10.4.11 and 10.5.x?

For OS X 10.5, you use the following settings
As mentioned by bdaqua, open Print & Fax and click the IP icon and then select IPP from the top drop menu. Then in the Address field just enter the IP address; don't enter the leading 'http://' and don't enter the :631 (the mere fact that you have selected the IPP protocol means that it will communicate on port 631)
Then in the queue field you can enter printers/My_Printer, although some router perform a translation for the shared printer so you only need to enter the shared printer name in the queue field.
As for the name and location fields, these are just free text for the local user and have no bearing on the queue details.
And as for 10.4 I have no idea or way to test this at home. But if you use a mix of mine and bdaqua's information you should be okay.

  • How to change computer network name?

We're swapping 2 computers in our office. How would I change their network names to represent their new user/location? As well as changing the computer's user account?
The way our current setup is that each room has a name, and the room name is the computer network name as well as the user account name.

you mean the computer name is like "iMac-24inch-at-room-1.local" when you browse the networks ?
If so, Just change it in System Preferences->Sharing.
or the wireless SSID, eg. Airport connected to "Room 1" ?
if this is the case, just select the new room BS and set that in Airport Pref network.

Could anybody help me how to fix this problem?
Previously I used qb (a mobile network in Cambodia) for my iPad 4 (iOS 7.0.4 non-jailbreak) the network name is qb.
The problem is that after I changed to use SMART (another mobile network in Cambodia) for this iPad the network name is still in QB and the Line name changed to SMART.

Through your router manually.  If you have an Apple router, post in one of its Airport forums.  3rd party router, contact the manufacturer if you need instructions.
