How to setup hard drive shock protection with applesmc?

Hi,
I've read that the applesmc module allows to read the motion sensors in intel macbooks. I've checked with lsmod and the module is loaded in my machine.
How do I make sure that shock protection is enabled? AFAIK, there should be a daemon running that reads the sensor data (using the files exposed by spplesmc). Which daemon would that be?
Thanks.

No, I'm not really sure. I'm assuming that's something that the OS needs to take care of since there are posts and articles that talk about how to set it up (All the ones I've found are for the IBM thinkpads)

  • How to wipe hard drive to sell without disks

I am selling my 13"  macbook pro  (anyone interested?)
I need to wipe or restore my hard drive to protect my information.
What is the best way to do this without having to purchase the disks?
    Thanks!

If your system shipped with installation discs, you're just going to have to call Apple and, with your serial number handy, order a set of discs. The charge is minimal ($20, I think, plus tax and shipping). It is the only way that you're going to be able to do a complete factory reset and it would be most unfair not to supply your buyer with the discs, should he/she need them.

  • How to setup Recovery drive when upgrading Vista to Win 7.

I am preparing to do a clean install of  Windows 7 onto a hard drive that shipped with Vista Home and the Recovery partition.  I want to reuse the recovery tools along with Windows 7 in the recovery partition.  I have the original recovery disks.
What steps do I need to do to replace the operating system on the recovery partition with Win 7 and retain all the other HP tools?
    Thanks,
    Luke

The short answer is NO as it only has Vista drivers.  You should go to the WIndows 7 upgrade page to get more information on how to perform your upgrade.  It will also tell you if your system is supported or not, and any precautions that need to be taken prior to performing the upgrade.
Whatever you do be sure to backup ALL of your date just in case.
If you don't post your COMPLETE model number it's very difficult to assist you. Please try to post in complete sentences with punctuation, capitals, and correct spelling. Toshiba does NOT provide any direct support in these forums. All support is User to User in their spare time.

  • How to check hard drive health

My mac pro starts up and shuts down very slow. Anyone know how to check hard drive health?

Normally if you have a hard drive problem it manifests itself with delays, periodic locks-ups, I/O errors, etc.during notrmal use, not just start ups and slow downs.
Never the less, you asked how you check the health of a drive, so I'll answer.
You can check the SMART status of your drive with Disk Utility or a free tool like smartctl in the smartmontools package. Disk Utility will typically report the SMART status of your drive as "verified" or a message associated with a type of failure right in the Disk Utility window. SMART status will be reported on most internal drives and Thunderbolt drives. More elaborate SMART information can often be obtained with newer OS versions by clicking on the "info" button. SMART is a reporting technology and will only report on errors after they occur. Many in the industry are highly critical of SMART, with a recent study by Google on hard drive problems indicating that it did a poor job indicating impending problems.
Other tools such as Scannerz (http://scsc-online.com/Scannerz.html), TechTool Pro (http://www.micromat.com/products/techtool-pro) and Drive Genius (http://www.prosofteng.com/products/drive_genius.php) do, IMHO, a better job of testing because surface scans can detect errors not detected by SMART yet, and all three of them do those tests. Personally I like Scannerz myself because it's to the point, hardware testing oriented, and can expose other system problems like cable problems, whereas the others are more like swiss army knife tools with a lot of features that may or may not be of use to end users. Some of the people on this site will swear by these tools, whereas others will swear at them. All three of these also monitor SMART status in one way or another.
With software tools out of the way, I'd have to agree with all previous posts, because it doesn't sound like it's probably a hard drive problem. Yes, it possibly could be, it's just that slow start ups and shutdowns are usually caused by too many apps being saved in an "on" state. Any time the system starts, it has to re-load them and resume them as best as it can, and then any time it gets shut down it must save all that information  and this all takes time. (I'm assuming Lion or newer operating system is in use). This is often the most likely cause in Lion, Mountain Lion, and Mavericks.
There are other possibilities, but you should probably ellaborate on the problem a bit more.

  • Perfect Hard Drive To Use With Time Machine?

    Hi,
Has anyone found out what's the perfect External Hard Drive to use with Time Machine?
I have experience with a few of WD's My Book models (Essential, Pro and Studio). The problem with all of them is that they automatically keep switching themselves off (spin down) and on (spin up) throughout the day, in an effort to save power. But it's actually quite annoying. The My Book drive will automatically turn itself off, and then turn back on again within the space of one minute. Also, going to use Spotlight (even if you've excluded Time Machine Backups from being indexed) will automatically prompt the My Book drive to turn back on, which introduces a small delay to using Spotlight.
Does anyone make an External Hard Drive, with a Firewire 400 or 800 connection, that stays on ALL the time and doesn't automatically make decisions about when it should spin down or spin up?

I'am using a 500Gb Freecom Pro Hard Drive connected on USB via my Cinema Display. I so forget about it that I often forget to disconnect it from my laptop before leaving the office... Never complained about it
Btw, it does not implements the energy saver Auto turn off/on feature which I don't need cause the time it could mostly be really useful is by night. As it stops when I disconnect the USB and start again when I connect it back.. this is perfect to me.
I must say I'm quite happy with every Freecom product I bought and this one certainly don't break the rule

  • How big a hard drive can I put in my mac

    Hello everyone,
Inspired from succefully putting a new DVD-RAM burner in my iMac G4 800Mhz (thanks to this forum for helping me get the jumper switch setting right) I have now ordered a 250GB hard drive with the plan to open up my blob again and exchange the hard drive.
However, I have heard that the computer might not recognise a HD this big and that 128GB might be the maximum. Can anyone confirm/deny/agree anything on this? I am running on 10.3.9.
Also (while I'm here asking questions) can you tell me something else. If I put in the new hard drive, boot up with my OS 10.3.9 discs and instal the OS will that all then work and be fine? I have a new external case for the old HD so after the instal I plan to transfer my photos and music across to the new HD.
    Thanks everyone.
    Babble
    imac G4 flat screen 800Mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I have a machine like yours 800mhz G4 iMac and I installed a Seagate Barracuda 7200rpm 250gb disk - much noiser than the Maxtor I took out but Seagate is one of the most reliable right now. I think you can put in any ATA100 disk, remember to set the jumpers on the new drive exactly the same as the one you're taking out (mine was master with DVD as slave but sometimes its the other way round).
I also installed a Pioneer DVR110 (now with firmware version 1.37 Region Free), and a 512mb stick of ram internally & 512mb sodimm on the base whilst I was at it.
My machine is just over 3 years old and i noticed that the heat conductive grease on the CPU had dried out so I removed the heatsink and carefully scraped of the dried stuff and reapplied a thin film of new silver based grease.
Don't forget to re-grease the other parts of the imac chasis to allow dissipation of heat.

  • How do I find how large my Hard Drive is? Please help!

Recently been getting messages saying that my startup disk is full. And I'm thinking about getting a Time Capsule. But the thing is, I can't find out how big my hard drive is. I clicked the apple, then About this mac, and I could only find "Memory", which was only 1 GB. I know that can't be it, because my iTunes is over 90 GB. But I can't find the hard drive. Either I'm blind, or it's not there.
    Please help
    Thanks

Click more info in the about this mac pop up. Then under Serial-ATA. This will give you the size.
You can also click on your drive in finder and choose Get Info. This will also let you see the size.

  • What brand external hard drive is best with time machine

what brand of external hard drive works best with time machine?

Contrary to the other two replies, I will relate what I've read here: WD drives are fine, but their (cheap?) enclosures are subject to failure. Some buy a bare WD drive and install it in an Oxford Chip external enclosure (OWC / macsales.com would be one source). And, I have two LaCie Quadras and one OWC Mercury Pro - both are generally recommended here. If you want it bootable, most WD drives do not support it:
    http://wdc.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1787/related/1/session/L2F2LzEvd GltZS8xMzUxNTIzMzIwL3NpZC9ueUFYc1g5bA%3D%3D
Please note: it's good to have an external hard drive which has its own power supply and, as mentioned, FW 800 or USB 3). You also do not need any software that comes on the external - you will most likely need to format it anyway because most come formatted for Windows, but that is easy using Disk Utility.

  • New hard drive and problems with sync

My problem is that I have installed a new hard drive (Win 7)  which I installed itunes on and I cannot sync my ipod. I still have my old hard drive (windows XP) with the original itunes on it and I have tried to back it up but it still wont do it.
I can boot to XP and perform a back up but re-booting to Win7 and trying to restore it dosent work and I still get the syncing issue. I find the suggestion to erase my ipod and reinstall my music, a ridiculous solution and I'm guessing there is an "easy button" somewhere?
    help!

I probably should have mentioned this twist. My music is on a seperate drive. So what I have is Win7 on SSD1, WinXP on 2nd drive and media on a 3rd drive.
I backed up my media on both OS's and they seem to conflict with or do not recognize each other. Installing all my music on my SSD along with my Win7 is not an option (too small).
    thanks

  • How to replace hard drive in macbook pro?

How to replace hard drive in macbook pro?

    Hi S,
If you have the newer unibody style, it's very easy. If it's one of the earlier models, it's considerably more difficult. Go to Apple Menu > About This Mac > More Info > Hardware and find your Model Identifier. Then go to ifixit.com, or powerbookmedic.com or macsales.com or youtube or others and there are illustrated, detailed directions. Good luck to you and post back if you have further questions.
