How to setup mac mini server (no optical drive)

It's the Oct 2009 A1283 version.  This has no optical drive.
What options do I have short of buying an external DVD rom drive?
I have other imacs and air's.  Can I use one of their drives to reinstall the mini?  What kind of cable do I need?  FW800 <-->  FW800?

I'm putting the orig os that came with it... 10.6.8.
I found the manual online, and found I could do a remote OS install from another imac in Utilities... never saw that app before!
Anyway, thanks!
If there is another option, however, I would be interested in learning... please let me know.
Thanks

If it's a new mini, should have Mtn Lion on it. In any case, restart into recovery mode, and follow the instructions.

  • How to use Mac Mini Server as media server

I recently purchased a Mac Mini Server and want to make it my media center accessed by my TV.
This is what I have on my network:
    1x Mac Book Pro
    3x Mac Books
    4x iPhones (2x iPhone 4, 2x iPhone 3Gs)
    1x iPad
    1x 1TB external Drive
    1x Time Capsule 500 Gig
I want to figure out a way to easily put all the Video/Photos and Music onto the Mac Mini Server from all phones, computers and iPad.  I then want to be able to watch them from my TV.
I then want all the devices to be able to see the videos/photos from them in real time if needed.
Does anyone know how to accomplish this?
    Thanks,
    Darren

iCloud when available later this year will help a lot. However in the mean time the only option is to either
sync all the iPhones/iPads to their computers
copy all the libraries on to your Mac mini and then import them in to the master library
login via file sharing to each computer and then import them in to the master library
use FireWire Target Disk mode and import them in to the master library

  • How to upgrade Mac mini server Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion

Trying to upgrade Mac mini server running Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. I downloaded Mountain Lion and about to install but a warning prompt tells me server functionality will be lost until server.app is applied. What is involved in doing that?

What's involved?  Buy and load OS X Server; that's now a Mac App Store app.
    That'll get you Server.app.
Server.app is the GUI tool that is used to manage recent versions of OS X Server, along with (increasingly) the command line management of the features that are not exposed through the Server.app tool.

  • Mac Mini Server w/DVD drive?

I'm considering adding a Mac mini with Snow Leopard server to my home setup, and I have several questions about the mini, since it looks like I might have to do something custom to get the setup I want...
    1. Is it possible to change the OS installed by Apple when ordering? They don't offer the Mac Mini with Super Multi drive with an OSX server option, and I'm a little wary of having a server I have to use an external drive for to install from DVD or rip music or movies.
    2. How large a single HD will the Mac mini support? If I'd only have one HD, I want to make it a big one...

    1. I don't think it's possible to order it that way. You'd have to order the regualar mini and buy OSx Server separately. I recommend getting the server hardware. The faster processor, more memory and an additional 500G disk makes it most cost effective. I have the $99 external superdrive and use it on my MBair as well as the mini. I bought it 2 years ago with the MBair and it works just fine. No failures on either machine. Also, if it did fail, it's $99 to replace and just plug it in.
    2. The largest drive Apple supplies is 500G for the mini. There might be something larger by 3rd party vendors but with 1T in my machine, I didn't need to go there.
    Hope this helps...

  • Installing Win7 on a macbook pro using a mac mini as external optical drive

    hi everyone,
My 2 year old son watches movies on my macbook pro. He stuck something in the optical drive making it unusable. Repairing it is 200 to 300 euros (ouch).
I want to install win7 via bootcamp and I'm using my mac mini (october 2009) as an external optical drive. These are my steps:
1.hold the "t" on the mac mini
2.connect it to the macbook with a firewire 800 to firewire 400 cable
3.Power up and hold the "alt" on the macbook
4.I see the optical drive on the boot screen and I choose it
5.Then I get a blank screen and a few seconds later the "missing operating system" message appears.
Am I missing something? Is it possible to install win7 using a mac mini as an external drive?
PS1:I already have partitioned the HD with bootcamp.
PS2:I've upgraded the hard disk drive of the macbook with a seagate momentus 500GB hard disk. Don't think this is the problem, thought I should mentioned it.

    Hi Mike,
For reference it is called "IP over Firewire".
Connect the two computers with a fire wire cable. System Preferences > Network > Configure IPv4: > Manually > IP address: 192.168.3.1 (and .2 on other) > Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0. Leave the other fields blank. Do this on both computers on the computer you want to allow access to or both for two way access go to System Preference > Sharing > Select a service to change its settings. Turn remote Login on.
On the MBP go to the Finder Menu > Go > Connect to Server > Type in the IP address of the Mini 192.168.3.2 (Whatever you gave it)
With this configuration you still have full use of the Mini and certain apps can use Xgrid and use the processor of the mini when it is not doing anything. I would keep the Mini as 10.4 unless you really need both machines running Leopard. As noted before you cannot boot the MBP from a HDD that is Apple Partition Scheme and vice versa you cannot boot the PPC from a Guide Partition Table.
    Sweet Polly

  • New Mac Mini Server, two Hard drives, Can I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

New Mac Mini Server, has two Hard drives, could I install an older Mac OS on the second drive and switch start up disks to run PowerPc applications?

I haven't purchased a Mac Mini at this time and I may not if I can't use it as a non server. I need to update my system I would be better off buying a new Mac with Snow Leopard the last app that will run Rosetta. The Mac Mini Server has a quad 2.0 processor and 4 GB RAM and two internal hard drives and should out perform my dual 1.25 G4. I can run PPC apps on my G4 but it is 8+ years old and seems to be getting noisy. I don't want to tie myself to another old machine. I want a machine that will work with Intel Apps I was hoping that the two hard drives would allow me to boot from the second with Snow Leopard and use Lion on the first drive to be able to keep up to date with all my other universal apps and Mac OS up grades. The application I use the most is my CanvasX app with drawing & vector effects, text & typography, sprite technology, painting, image editing, and multimedia tools are all in this one app but will not be updated to run Intel apps. I am frozen in time because my most valuable Application won't be updated and Apple has cut me off by not supporting PPC in Lion and onward; Apple used to backward support but I guess that they are no longer as user friendly and concerned with a happy user. I have always been a loyal Mac user and I will not migrate to Windows under any circumstance; I hate windows!
    Thanks for your prompt response,
    Dick Deaton

  • How do I install Windows on a new Mac Mini (w/o optical drive?)

The new Mac Mini does not have an optical drive and I would like to install Windows with Parallels Desktop 6
Any ideas?  Can I put the iso on a USB drive or mount a NAS?
    Thanks for ay help!
    Enzo

You can burn an ISO of a bootable disc back to a DVD, but not to a USB device. I don't know if Parallels is able to install from an ISO, but it may install from an external drive. This is why you should read the documentation for Parallels or ask at their tech support site.

  • Mac mini and External Optical drives

    hi all,
just wondering if i'll be able to use external optical drives with my mac mini which doesn't have a DVD writer, it detects and mounts in OSX, but can't playback a dvd or burn, do i have to use any third party software like roxio?
any help would be much appreciated.

You omit specifics but this might help, especially if you already have an external hd on firewire and plan to add an ext optical drive to the firewire chain. Burn Disk created one perfect DVD (consisting of backup files) but then became flaky, dying during burns. Patchburn (www.patchburn.de) did not help this problem but it did change system profile of the new optical drive from: 'unsupported' to 'vendor authorized' which may have helped generally. With Panther it will be required!
I did lots of searching on Web, Groups & Apple Discussions but could not find anything on "Error: 0x80020020: BE, sense error, etc".
I discovered the solution to this problem: I put the DVD external drive between the Mac Mini & the external harddrive (instead of at the end) and now BurnDisk works 100%. "Sense Errors" were common back when I was using SCSI drives and usually pointed to cable length issues. This was the simplest alteration I could make to my PPC G4 Mac Mini setup. I am using the 3 ft shielded cables that came with both of my external enclosures so it is reasurring that these did not have to be modified.
Now Burn Disc creates solid DVDs of backup folders, no more coasters or long pauses in the burning process, followed by the inevitable error code.
Using Pioneer DVR-112D drive in a generic ext enclosure. The drive is current production so I have not modified the firmware. Using Memorex DVD-R from WalMart.

    Hi, 2 ways possibly....
Enable CD/DVD Shaing inSys Prefs>Sharing, or boot the older one using the t key to put it in Target Mode.

  • Mac Mini (Mid 2010) Optical Drive Stopped Working. Anyone else?

A month out of Applecare, my optical drive stopped accepting media. Took it to the Apple store and they said it either needs the ODD cabling replaced (roughly $50) or the entire drive is shot and needs to be replaced (roughly $170 repair).
While I wait for the parts to come in, I'm curious if this is a common issue and if anyone has any tips before I throw down almost $200 for an optical drive.

As far as I'm aware any form of DD or DTS whether it be 5.1, 6.1, 7.1 or indeed 7.2 is discrete by nature.
They contain discrete sound channels, but all are contained within one bitstream. They are encapsulated, if you will.
To my understanding, multi-channel PCM is not encapsulated in the same manner.

It was my understanding from the posts from others that this would carry digital audio.
Yes DisplayPort can provide audio. But you have to either be using an displayport-to-displayport connection, or using an appropriate adapter.
But a typical MDP to DVI adapter is not going to pass audio.
    Mr.C UK wrote:
...DVI does not pass through sound...
This is correct insofar as the fact that the DVI spec does not include audio. And as you said, a typical MDP adapter does not pass audio.
But just so you know, the DVI interface can actually carry audio, if it is present. When I had my 2010 Mini's HDMI port connected to my DVI Detective (via HDMI-DVI adapter) and then the DVI detective was connected to my HDMI reciever (via DVI-HDMI cable), I was receiving the HDMI audio stream at the receiver.

Connect them with a FireWire or Thunderbolt cable and start up the Mac mini with the T key held down. If desired, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to erase it.
