How to setup mSATA SSD cache drive

Hi
I've installed a mSATA SSD drive from Samsung in my X230i, but I cannot find out how to set it up as a cache drive.
I've tried installing Intel RST. It found the drive and after formatting the drive, it said al was good, but it didn't work...
Then I tried installing ExpressCache but that just said that their were no SSDs to be used...
What top do?
Best regards
Morten

  • L530 - Correct set up for 16GB mSATA SSD Cache + 500GB HDD

    Hello,
I'm a bit confused about optimal/correct set up for L530 ThinkPad equipped with 16GB mSATA SSD cache drive and 500GB HDD. ExpressCache is installed and works properly.
    - Should I disable RapidBoot Shield in CP?
    - Should I uninstall (or disable at start up) RapidBoot HDD Accelerator (FastBoot)?
    Please advise.
    Thanks.

yes you should remove the rapidboot related softwares.

  • T430s mSATA SSD cache and new SSD?

I just ordered a new T430s with a 500GB drive and the 16GB mSATA SSD cache.  A friend has now talked me in to replacing the 500GB drive with a Samsung 840 Pro 512GB SSD, though nothing has been purchased just yet.
My question is:  obviously its dumb to have a 16GB SSD cache sitting in front of another SSD, yes?  So, what are my options?  Can I repurpose the mSATA SSD for something else?  Should I just pull it out?
(And, yes, I should have thought of this before I placed my order.  Hindsight, right?)
    Thanks for your ideas/help/instructions!
    Best regards,
    Charles

    Hello and welcome,
You'll get a bunch of different opionions on this
If you're going with a big SSD, you might as well just remove the mSATA device.
I've taken a different approach with my T420.  Left the HDD in and installed a 256GB mSATA SSD.  The SSD holds the OS and the stuff that I want to be fast.  The HDD has less-frequently accessed data - and a backup of the SSD.
The HDD is set to spin down when inactive.  Saves power and noise.  Mostly the machine just runs off the SSD.

  • 16GB mSATA SSD Cache

I recently purchased a new HP Envy 700-300z desktop computer. All is well except for the following. With the purchase, I had the 16GB mSATA SSD Cache disk installed to speed up the computer. I could not locate any info in the instructions and was looking for third party software that was attached to this drive, like scandisk or conduit the owner of the software. Was there a software installed and if so where is it located or any other info that you may have.

    Hi,
The machine uses the following technology:

  • MSI GE 60OND i5 ver.MSATA SSD cache intel rapidstorage ?

Hello, could i do msata ssd cache on my laptop with intel rapid storage ?
my friend told me it require capability to raid, but i don't see raid setting/mode on bios ?
and what speed of msata on msi ge60ond ?

All this information is great, but not telling us what USB devices you're trying to use pretty much means we're shooting in the dark as to what the problem can be.
They are right, drivers for Windows 8 are included with Windows 8 USB3.0. So there are no drivers needed.

  • How to add mSata SSD as HDD cache (for Windows 8)?

    Hi,
I have T430 with HDD and Windows 8, 64.  I have installed a new 32 GB mSata SSD, but I cannot figure out a way to set it up as a cache.
I am aware of the solution where ExpressCache needs to be installed  but I have Windows 8 and the below link does not apply:
    http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/detail.page?DocID=HT074404
I have also tried installing Interl Rapid Storage software.  It does show my SSD but there is no option to "Accelerate".  Googling points out that in BIOS I need to change SATA mode to RAID, but I only have Compatible and AHCI options there.  Installing latest BIOS and lates Intel Rapid Storage drivers did not help.
Any other options I might be missing?  Looks like it is either Lenovo publishes ExpressCache for Win 8 or adds IRS / RAID support in BIOS.

Ok, I have figured it out.  Turns out that ExpressCache link for Windows 7 works for Windows 8 as well.  After installing it I had to remove the volume from the SSD using disk manager and then run from the admin command prompt (can get there using Win+X key combo):
    eccmd -partition
This command automatically found my SSD (again trick here is to make sure it is wiped clean first - not formatted and not partitioned).
Now I can see the status and effectiveness of caching via:
    eccmd -info
Impressive - about 60% of read operations right now are from SSD.  System is way more responsive and boots faster.  You can see even that HDD lamp lights up less frequently.  I definitely recommend adding an msata SSD if you have a HDD T430!
PS. ExpressCache.exe which I assume is GUI does not start though, I had to use the command line.

  • How to setup an ssd in a new macbook pro?

Hi, I have a 2010/11 iMac 27", iPad 2, plus a new iPhone 5 soon. :-) Am waiting for the arrival of a new MBP mid-2012 model with 8GB RAM & std 500GB HDD . I will upgrade the machine to SSD & wanted to check if I have the process/setup for this correct (any help/advice is appreciated)? I will be using a 128GB Samsung 830 SSD with Hardwrk CD/DVD Adapater & external USB drive bay + tools, etc.
    1) Setup/test (but not update) MBP on arrival, but do not copy data from iCloud/iTunes yet.
    2) Switch off, open back, disable battery, etc., as per iFixIt instructions.
    3) Remove CD/DVD drive & replace with Hardwrk Adapter; DVD will go in the ext/l USB bay.
    4) Install SSD in Adapter in DVD bay as this is 2012 model so SATA-3 6G. (PS: Will check the Firmware version on my W7 PC first.)
    5) Reboot machine via Option key to boot from ML USB key to reinstall Mac OS X 10.8.x (creating std mac partition in Disk Utility first). I will leave the Recovery Partition on the HDD for emergencies, and to save space on the SSD.
    6) Reboot MBP, hold down Option key & boot from the SSD. Q: Do I need to enable TRIM support on a 3rd-party SSD? Also, do I need to Fix Permissions on the drive?
    7) Test SSD & if all OK, reboot from USB Key(?) to reformat the old HDD as data volume using Disk Utility. Q: Can I do this from the SSD?
    8) Reboot (again) from SSD. Install apps as per iMac (Q: What about iLife apps (do I get a DVD?). Create data folders for large files: Music, Pictures & Videos. Restore data backed up on External USB/iCloud onto data volume.
9). Move iTunes/iPhoto data files from the SSD to data volume & use Option-click to define these new locations on opening the apps. Q: Do I need to do any further config on the Home folder?
10). Set monthly backup of SSD to external USB Drive via Time Machine (or use cloud?). Celebrate with coffee & cake! :-)

It sounds as if you've all the bases covered.
    Just two small things:
Make certain, after you've installed a bootable OS on your SSD, that you go to System Preferences>Startup Disk and select the SSD. Many folks have missed this step and been less than pleasantly surprised when bootup is 45 seconds rather than the expected 15 seconds.
Use Time Machine wisely. Don't rely on monthly backups but rather daily or hourly (if you're close to your external). Since you'll have a USB 3.0 machine, be certain to get a good USB 3.0 external drive for Time Machine backups - maybe even two external drives if, like myself, you're paranoid about disk failure. When I'm at my desk, I have my Firewire 800 drives connected to my Apple Thunderbolt Display and backup to a 1TB FW drive and a 2TB FW drive. And I have hourly backups. Once a month just isn't good enough.
You'll need to download and keep a copy of "Install OS X Mountain Lion.app" to make your USB flash drive stick. With this in your Applications folder, you can use Lion DiskMaker to make a USB flash drive using a 8GB+ USB stick. You can also make a bootable dual-layer DVD (but the USB drive will be faster).
As I said, it sounds as if you've everything in hand otherwise. Good luck with your new MBP and your SSD - I love the speed on mine and I'm sure that you will as well.

  • How to setup MM costing and drive for new parts before ECM release key is triggered?

    Hi,
I am on the engineering side of SAP ERP where I create new materials, BOMs, etc.  We do this with a change master without release key today.   We are switching to a more controlled/managed process for engineering changes where we will use change masters with a release key and approval workflows for these tasks (ECM).   The problem we are seeing is that the supply chain side of the business is not able to perform their tasks of costing materials and driving for new parts until the ECM workflows are complete, release key is active, and the changes are valid for production.  There must be a way for supply chain to perform these tasks beforehand, so that when the release key becomes active, material costing is complete, new materials are already on hand (or at least been ordered), so that the process of procurement/production orders are not delayed.  Can you point me to documentation that provides an overview, or summarizes what the best practices are for our supply chain when we start working with ECM release keys?
    Thanks,
    Joseph

the release key allows you to release the change for specific business functions. Please look at the options available in release key configuration. You will need multiple release keys to bring the changes in a more controlled manner.

  • T430s upgrading from HDD with 16G mSATA SSD to primary SSD - what to do with mSATA SSD

    Hi all,
I am going to install a Samsung 840 pro 256G SSD to replace my HDD that came with my T430s.  It also came with a 16G mSATA SSD "cache" drive.  Once I install the primary 256G SSD, I think the mSATA SSD will be useless and only going to cause trouble.
My question is, can I just remove it at the same time as I swap the HDD and SSD or will that cause problems? Are there proper steps to follow in this situation? Will any info be lost if I just take it out?.....I figure not since it is just a "cache" drive which is not supposed to really store any  files.
    thanks,
    Dan
btw - my overall impression is that this mSATA "cache" thing has been basically useless and a waste of money.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

My 16GB SanDisk U100 is giving a SMART error as noted by a variety of tools (Crystal Disk, SanDisk SSD Toolkit, Lenovo's boot diagnostics), and is failing and useless. I was thinking of replacing, but I have a couple of questions:
Will ExpressCache work just as effectively if I get a 32GB mSATA and partition out 16GB for caching and the rest of data?
Are bus transfer speeds any different if on mSATA vs. internal HD port? Meaning is internal HD on a faster bus configuration than mSATA?
I also wonder by OP thought ExpressCache was useless. I also like the idea of getting a large mSATA such as lead_org mentions, but I wonder if it is more cost effective to just get a single 1TB internal HD with hybrid SSD technology...

  • Ssd cache and hybrid drive

I am looking to order the HP 17t-j000 with 8GB of memory.  It offers both SSD cache and a Hybrid drive as options, and you can choose both.    Does it make sense to get both, or is this just redundant?   I

No the SSD cache drive with hybrid drive will outperform just the hybrid drive by quite a bit. You will get boot time performance close to a main SSD drive, but a main SSD drive would be even faster, particularly on data transfer.

  • Best Use of one SSD  for cache drives

Hello...  Months ago I added two Physical  Momentus XT drives to be used  as Cache only drives:  One as a Cache disk, and one as a Cache Database disk.  This is the only function these drives do...
Doing this really sped up large session loads...
I'm going to be getting one SSD soon, and was wondering.... Of the Two Caches....  Cache, or Cache Database...
Which would benifit the most from an SSD over a hybrid hard drive??
Seeing that the Controller is a 3Gb/sec controller only....  That's why I used two separate Cache disks..
Now that I'll have the benifit of a SSD speed over a Hybrid Drive (Faster Reads only)... Should I combine both in the SSD or still keep them separate?
    Thanks!    Jan

I have replaced 2 Momentus XT drives (One with Media Cache, and other with Cache Database)  with 1 Samsung 840 SSD, which has 2 folders: CS6 Cache, and CS6 Cache Database.
Prior to pulling the drives, I tested the time it took to load a 45 min 1080i AVCHD session that had over 400 scenes, 600 2k JPEG's and about 25 pieces of music.  From clicking on the session to load, until "All Media Loaded" took about 34 seconds (This is with the Cache's on separate Hard drives).  Shut system down, pulled the two drives, added the one SSD drive, power up, formatted the drive and added the above mentioned folders...  Then launched PPRO and pointed the Media Cache and Cache Database at these new locations... Then launched the 45 min session, and walked away while it created the data locations, peek files, etc, to the new SSD Cache Drive folders.
When It was finished, I closed, rebooted the system, Launched PPRO, and timed from the Click on the session, till the end of "All Media Loaded"...     19 seconds...
    Will be watching this intently......
EDIT:   SO far, I'm happy with the change.... I am interested in anyone else who has done this sort of thing before.... and in paticular, if you found any negatives of putting both cache's on the same physical drive, even if it is a SSD....
I did find my prior notes, and going from Cache's on raid (Different directory than media, though media was on same raid) to separate Momentus XT Drives decreased load time of this same 45 min project by ~ 15 seconds..
$$$ Available was only enough for one SSD, and I'm not certain if multiple SSD's for cache's would be worth the $$.... Which is pretty much why I posted here....
    Looking forward to your comments...

  • How Much Are For SSD cards or drives? (not sure what it's really called?)

I have a question, for my first time being a mac user and all. How much are the ssd cards/drives? I have a 4GB and 2.4 ghz macbook pro of 2010 early, it's a 13". I'm thinking about how I am going to be majoring in animation design in college and I'm worried that my laptop might LAG or slow down. (Will it? :S) I know I probably sound stupid right now and probably being laughed about with this question but it's my first mac laptop that I will taking to college class with me. Anyone can answer my question that would be great.
Two people have suggested that I return this 13" for a 15" but I just dont' have the budget for the 15" and plus the 13" is great and portable.
    What do you guys think?

How much are the ssd cards/drives?
Depends on the maker, the size and how fast their throughput is. Do a google search and compare prices
t's my first mac laptop that I will taking to college class with me.
SSDs are not exclusive to Macs. You would be asking the same questions if you were considering a windows based laptop with an SSD.
Two people have suggested that I return this 13" for a 15"
For animation, their suggestion is correct.

  • Disable SSD cache in Windows on W540?

I just received my W540, which came with the micro SSD cache drive. I'm dual booting my machine with Linux, and intend to use the micro SSD with the bcache Linux kernel module, which assumes it has exclusive use of the cache device, even through reboots. I thus need to make sure Windows doesn't use the cache device (which is fine, since I won't use Windows most of the time anyway).
What must I do to ensure Windows doesn't touch the micro SSD?

Just uninstall ExpressCache in Windows, and then reformat the mSATA.
You can uninstall it in "Programs and Features", which is found in the "Control Panel".
Or right-click the start orb of Windows 8.1, and select "Programs and Features".

  • Lenovo ThinkPad Edge S430 mSATA SSD

    Hi,
I'd like to install a proper SSD hard drive instead of the built-in 32GB SSD Cache drive. In the manual I've read, that it is not recommended/possible, to install a mSATA disk as a boot disk.
Why is it not possible to use the internal mSATA slot for booting? Is it going to destroy anything or doesn't it work properly or which reason prevents the usage of the internal mSATA slot instead of the SSD cache?

That is a great idea.  I have a Mushkin Atlas 128GB mSATA, and it is fantastic.  I would highly recommend it.  Whatever you do, avoid OCZ like the pague... those things get sent back far too frequently to trust.
