How to setup Time Machine on 2 drives in 2 different locations

I back up on 2 different drives in 2 different locations. Time Machine only remembers 1 drive so every time I go home I have to open TM pref and switch drives to backup to. Is there a way to get TM to remember the settings for both drives and make it a plug and play backup?

the following method was proposed by biovizier on this forum and it seemed to work when I tried it. you can try it and see if it works.
First, give both backup drives the same name. then enable showing hidden files in finder. you can do this using Tinkertool or using the following terminal command
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE; killall Finder
then open the TM drive at home in finder. there will be a file at its top level with the name like .001d4f56a01d. Copy this file to the main disk, go to the other location and move this file to the other TM drive.
You'll have to authenticate with your admin password to do this. then unplug and replug the TM drive and
see if TM backups work without reselecting the drive.
you also might have to change the ownership on that file - I'm not completely sure about that.

I have an external hard drive which i usually use to back up my macbook pro via time machine but if i put pictures or songs on the external hard drive and connect it to a gaming concole or a pc nothing happens. The concole and pc doesn't recognize the device. Is there anything i can do to make it so i can access files from other devices while still using it for time machine?

The external drive is Mac formatted for Time Machine. Your gaming console and PC won't be able to read its format.
If you are determined to use it for both purposes, you can partition the drive in Disk Utility. Format the PC partition for MS-DOS or whatever is required for your gaming console. You may or may not have sufficient space for both partitions. If you do not you will have to erase your Time Machine backups.

That's not needed, but if you want to do it, use the Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilities/ folder to create a new partition.

  • How to disable Time Machine from backing up to hard drive

Mountain Lion (OSX 10.8) will not install onto iMac (under OSX 10.7.4) because: "hard drive is Time Machime backup disk" error message.  However, TM Preferences does not show the iMac HD as a TM backup Location Option - it only shows the LaCie External Drive - which has been the storage drive receiving the Time Machine Backup.  How do I remove/prevent Time Machine from looking for and/or backing up to the iMac Hard Drive if the TM Pref does not list the iMac Hard Drive as an option? Note: The iMac HD icon on the desktop is a "Time Machine image" (blue Drive icon w/white white counter clockwise arrow).  Thanks.

Check to see if you have a file called backups.backupdb on the hard drive you are attempting to update.
If the install procedure see such a file, it might think that it is a TM backup drive.

I'm replacing my 250 gig hard drive in my Macbook Pro with a 500 gigabyte version.  I'm concerned about being able to use my Time Machine backups.  Can anyone shed some light on how to do this properly?

As far as I know, you can use Time Machine back up on new 500GB HDD as well.
Time Machine drive connect MacBook Pro, then boot with pressing Option key with new drive to select Time Machine back up drive as boot drive to restore or make clone back up with Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper on another external HDD, then boot from it to restore.

  • HT201250 How to retrieve external drive backups from time machine on hard drive without external drive connected

I am keeping my work files on an external drive which are backed up using Time Machine onto my computer's hard drive. I set it up this way so I can take my actual work drive with me if I need it. However, I just noticed that I can't see any of those files in time machine if the drive itself isn't plugged in, which makes this method useless. Is there any way to get to those, or do I need to reconfigure my backup system? I always thought if something happened to my hard drive I'd have a backup, but that won't work if I can't get to the files.

See Pondini's TM FAQs, for starters.

  • Time Machine:  External Hard Drive connected to a dual-band network

I currently have a dual-band network setup using a 1TB Time Capsule (wireless-n only) and an AEBS (wireless b/g) in bridge mode.
My unibody MBP and ATV utilize the Time Capsule, while an older Macbook and MacMini utilize the AEBS. I have Time Machine configured on the MBP to use the Time Capsule for backup.
I have connected an external 500GB hard drive to the AEBS for the purpose of using Time Machine for the Macbook and MacMini. The Airport Utility shows the external drive connected to the AEBS, but when I try to configure Time Machine for the Macbook and MacMini I am only allowed to select the Time Capsule as the destination. Sorry for the long post. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Assuming you have the square Extreme (not the UFO-style), you can use an external USB HDD with it.
Time Machine backups to AirDisks (e.g. USB HDD attached to Extreme) is unsupported, but has been successful by some. As well, once you decide to move any old TM backups (HDD connected directly to the Mac) to an AirDisk, you cannot continue backing up to your previous TM backup. The format it saves to vs. a local HDD is different. The folder structure you see becomes a sparsebundle/disk image via the AirDisk.

  • Time Machine - using multiple drives when the first is not available

Hello I have been succussfully using Time Machine with my USB external drive. I have been connecting it to my MacBook Air from time to time. Manual backups as well as the hourly backups when the drive has been connected worked without any problem.
Recently, I connected Synology DiskStation (NAS) to my network and I have added it to the list of drives in my Time Machine setup. When my original external drive (first in the list) is not connected to my MacBook  the hourly backup is not initiated by the Time Machine at all. Manually started backup is runnign fine without any problem.
The external drive is annotated with exclamation mark in Time Machines list with "not available" error - and it seems that this is causing the interruption of automatic hourly backup to any drive.
Is there any way how to debug Time Machine? Or to get some logs of Time Machine?
Any similar experience with multiple drive backup when the first of them is disconnected most of the time...?
Thanks a lot for any help
    Petr

Perhaps you should address this to Synology's tech support. Apple doesn't provide any support for third-party NAS, so your best bet is with Synology.

  • Time machine says my drive is full, but it's not

time machine says my drive is full, but it's not. it is a 298 gig external drive with 51 gigs available. my internal drive on my lap top (the one I am backing up) is a 148 gigs with 44 gigs available. the backup folder on the external drive is
    152 gigs.
how can i fix time machine so it can figure out that the external drive isn't full?

Thank you both for your replies. Something is seriously wrong with a backup program that needs that much extra space! So much for incremental back ups.
It doesn't, necessarily. We still have no information on what's going on with your situation.
It's a back up for a laptop and I would like to connect it to the backup hard drive once a week or so, but from what I read time machine only works one way... for a computer to have it active all the time.
No. It works BEST that way, but isn't required.
That just won't work for me for many reasons. Most importantly, time machine slows up my computer and I have to leave it off to run my applications.
Then something else is wrong. Again, without any details, we can't help you determine what.
There is no setting to have it turn on in the middle of the night or once per week.
Not in TM itself. But there is a free 3rd-party app that will do this, Time Machine Editor: http://timesoftware.free.fr/timemachineeditor/
It would sure be nice if I could back up when I want. Seems like time machine is just one of those ideas that apple didn't think all the way through.
You can. And TM works just fine for most people. There is something unusual in your setup, or the way you're doing things, that's causing your difficulties.
Let's be clear: if you'd like some help with this, please answer my previous questions and download and post the messages from the wIdget.

  • How to manage Time Machine backups

Is there any way to manage time Machine Backups?
The things I want to do are:
    * Selectively trim old backups for files I longer need
    * Delete whole backups to maintain a trimmer backup disk
    * Restart the whole backup process from time to time (purge and start over)
I know how the backups works (read the Ars Technica article) but the file system won't give me permissions to manually purge data. I suppose I could mess with the permissions but I'm not sure the effect on TM.
After the upgrade to Leopard, and after I setup Time Machine I started to do a purge of old files and data I just don't need anymore. But of course now there's several backups of that data. And while I know TM uses hard links so its not taking up a lot of extra space, the Gig I could recoup may be worth it for the long haul of having backups.

Not really the original point of the question, but since you mentioned it...
Couldn't time machine be used as archival as long as you have space? Its incremental, its fairly efficient since it uses hard links, and even archives have old data you don't need.
But it does beg another question. It would be nice if Apple could provide a list of directories that could be excluded in the event you want to run a clean install and then restore only files that effect a user and his/her preferences.
I suppose the Home directory would be the simplest answer, but even that includes a lot of Apps and Library files that really aren't necessary.
Maybe its just best to exclude nothing and buy a bigger backup drive. And then maybe periodically start over. Which was one of my original questions.
How does one start over? Just turn off time machine and format the backup drive?
Just pondering (and a bit of rambling) at this point.
