How to setup WRT54G to iBook Airport, but has no ethernet cable port

I am trying to help a friend who broke her ethernet port plug. She has an iBook 600 running OS X Panther 10.3.9.
She bought an Airport card and installed it.
Bought the Linksys WRT54G wireless dsl router, but cannot get it going with her dsl because linksys setup CD only wants to install windows "exe" files.
Can she directly access the router just from Safari web browser by using the 192.168.1.1 / user blank / pw admin, and then go through setting up a WPA connection and wpa security manually?
Or does she have to have an ethernet connection first?
(if she must have ethernet cable connection, then she is, up creek with no boat and no paddle)
Thank you.
Best.

Correct... in more specific terms... click on the airport icon.. search for the default SSID( or wireless network name) and connect to it... once you are connected and have verified that you have a valid IP... then your all set to access the 192.168.1.1 page and configure the DSL and Internet.
For the wireless settings and WPA though, as per the last post... almost every single data you change there will kick you off the wireless network and you have to reconnect again...
For example, since you were connected to linksys (unsecured)... the moment you change this SSID to a personalized one... say myfriend101... you'd be off the router UI after you save the settings... so you have to reconnect manually again to myfriend101 (unsecured) again... once you are connected to this... and then decide to put say WPA security.. you'd get kicked off again the moment you save... (you get the pattern)...

  • Can I extend my network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable? I have CAT5 cable throughout my house but have a wireless network w/ 3 airport expresses

Can I extend my wireless network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable?  I have a wireless network with 3 airport expresses and 1 airport extreme functioning as the base station. I have CAT5 throughout my house.

    Welcome to the discussions, mib88!
Can I extend the network a second time with another Airport Express...
The short answer would be no. If you want more details, please continue to the next paragraph.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" works just like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your main hub is either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Express is at the end of a spoke. You can add more devices at the ends of other spokes, but these devices will communicate directly to the hub, not to another device at the end of a spoke.
Apple does offer an option which is is known as a "static WDS", which can consist of a "main", "relay" and "remote" device. The problem here is that this type of setup has two huge drawbacks:
    1) All of your faster "n" devices will drop down to much slower "g" speeds
    2) The bandwidth or speed capability on the network will drop down to only 25% of the original bandwidth with a "main", "relay" and "remote" on the network.
Don't think you want this on your network. Your best option is to connect the new AirPort Express to the "hub" using an ethernet connection. If you can't run the ethernet cable, take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the ethernet signal over the AC powerline in your home.

  • Can I add a second Airport Express using an Ethernet cable to extend my network if the first AX is wirelessly connected to an Xtreme?

Hi, I run a small motel and I am trying to extend the wireless network from the office to the rooms in the next building.
I have an AirPort Xtreme connected to my router with an ethernet cable and it works fine.  I have then connected an AirPort Express to this in the next bulding wirelessly (as i cant run an ethernet cable outside) which extends the network over all but the last 2 rooms in the next building.  There are bick walls so it sruggles over the distance.  I realise I cant connect another airport express wirelessly to extend the network further but can I connect another Airport Express using and ethernet cable to the exisiting Aiport Express to extend the network that extra distance?

You can do this, but as you might imagine, that is going to place even more of a load on the weakest link....the wireless "hop"......between your AirPort Extreme and the current AirPort Express.
So, things will slow down even more. Whether or not that will be acceptable to your guests is open to question. Light browsing and email should be OK. Someone trying to download a large file is going to be waiting longer than they might consider normal.
Things like this, you simply cannot predict in advance. Might be a good idea to understand the store's return policy if the new Express puts more of load on the network than is expected.

  • How to setup WRT54G as a wired bridge through another router

I have a verizon provided wireless router now and wish to utilize my wrt54G as a wired bridge.  Basically, I want to use the WRT54G as a switch to connect 3 items that do not have wireless (a A/V receiver, XBOX 360, and some networked storage).  The run is too long to have 3 connections directly to the verizon router, so I ran one and want the WRT54G to act as a HUB of sorts.
I connected the LAN output of my verizon router to the Input of the WRT54G, but no internet on the wired WRT54G outputs.  I assume I need to switch something to "bridged mode", but cannot figure this out.  I also suspect I need to disable DHCP, assign a static IP, and probably more, but I am having no luck.
Any ideas?   Help is greatly appreciated.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

What's the ip address of your verizon router?
Make sure that the Verizon router's ip address and the Linksys router's ip address both are suppose to be in the same network range.(For ex. Verizon router ip-192.168.2.1, Linksys Router ip- 192.168.2.2). Then connect the Ethernet cable from verizon router to the linksys router in Port number 1. Open the setup page of the Linksys router disable the DHCP and the Wireless  (as you said you want to "utilize wrt54G as a wired router" )

  • How to setup a printer with Airport Extreme + Express Network

Ok so here's how things are setup. I have an Extreme connected to my cable modem creating the wireless network. I have a PC that doesn't have a wireless card, so I setup an Express next to it. The Express takes in the wireless signal, and the PC is connected to the Express through ethernet and has a successful connection. Next I want to connect my printer to the USB port of the Express and share it over the network. It doesn't work plug and play. From the Airport utility, the express recognizes the printer, however, the computers on the network do not see it. Can this be set up to work? If so, what am I missing?
    Thanks

If you are on PC's, you will need to download the bonjour for windows.
    just google it.

  • How to setup wireless printing with AirPort Express?

Hey, I just bought a AirPort Express today and I can't figure out how to setup the usb wireless printing. Could someone explain in detail on how to do this? Thanks-Michael
    I have a Windows 7 64-bit PC and a Hp Deskjet F380 USB printer.

Download the install Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2
Run the program. Hopefully, your printer will be recognized.
If it is, "install" the printer and try to print.
Keep in mind that if you have an All-in-One type of device, that only the print function will be supported.
Advanced features like copy, scan, maintenance, etc are not supported. You will need to connect the All-in-One directly to your PC if you need those services.

I have just got an Apple Airport time capsule to back up my one year old iMac......how do I do it? I have tried putting an ethernet cable into the time capsule and to my sky hub, all I get is a flashing amber light, can anyone help I am a silver surfer not used to Apple products, but love them, plus I don't understand half of the jargon....HELP please

Apple's Setup Guide for the Time Capsule is pretty simple and clear for most users, and you don't indicate at what point or step that you are getting stuck.
So, please go to page 8 in your Setup Guide to review the topic of Plugging In Your AirPort Time Capsule.
The Sky hub will likely have 4 Ethernet <--> ports on the back of the device. Pick any one that you want and connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the port that you choose.
Then, connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to the WAN (circle of dots) port as shown in the Setup Guide.
Continuing with the instructions on page 8 of the Setup Guide, power up the Time Capsule by connecting the power cord from the back of the Time Capsule to a wall AC jack.
Note that the instructions indicate that the indicator light will be solid amber during startup, and it will change to blinking amber during the setup. The light will remain blinking amber until you have configured the Time Capsule at which time the light will turn green.
Next, go to page 12 of the Setup Guide to see the information to Use your Mac or iOS device to set up your AirPort Time Capsule.
You indicated in your tag line that you were using OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.3), and since that will exceed the minimum requirement of a Mac using OS X (10.7.5) as noted in the guide, you can use your Mac to set up the Time Capsule.
Continuing with the instructions on page 12 of the Setup Guide......
    1. Open AirPort Utility on your Mac.  It is located as follows:  Finder (the smiley face on the dock) > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    2. Select your AirPort Time Capsule and click Continue. You won't be able to do this, but read further......If you do not see the AirPort Time Capsule that you want to configure, choose it from the WiFi status menu in the menu bar, at the top of the screen.
So, clicking on the WiFi icon will yield a small window that looks like this:
The example below shows an AirPort Extreme.  You will see Time Capsule on your screen. Click on Time Capsule.
When you click on Time Capsule, that will get the setup wizard going. it will take a minute to analyze the network, then display a screen that looks similar to the illustration below, except that you will see a picture of a Time Capsule on your screen
    3. Continuing with the Setup Guide.......Follow the onscreen prompts to create a new network
Network Name...........Type in a simple name that you want to call your network. Do not use the suggested name.
Base Station Name....Type in a simple name that you want to call the Time Capsule.  Mine is TC, for example.
Password...................Type in a password that will be used for both the network and the Time Capsule.  Write that down.
Verify..........................Type in the password again to Verify
    Click Next
The setup wizard will configure everything for you. When you see the message of Setup  Complete, click Done.
The Time Capsule is now set up and it will display a green light.

  • How to setup Time Capsule to use wifi and 2 ethernet ports

Hi, I hope someone can help with this issue as I've been searching for an answer without success. Basically, can a Time Capsule (1st gen) connected to a modem create a wireless network, as well as connect to an ethernet powerline adapter, as well as connect to an iMac by ethernet?
My original setup was as follows:
modem > time capsule (which creates a wireless network) > iMac
I bought an AirPort Express to use in another room. It was extending the TC wifi network, but the speeds weren't great so I've got a pair of powerline ethernet adapters. I wanted to add those into my current setup so that the Express can create a wireless network.
Anyway, before I can get to that stage, I'm having issues with the TC. I want to achieve the setup as follows:
modem > time capsule (which creates a wireless network) > powerline adapter 1 * > powerline adapter 2 > airport express
    * But as well as connecting an ethernet cable to powerline adapter 1, also connect one from TC to my iMac.
When I tried connecting an ethernet cable to the TC in my original setup, the iMac lost connection to the internet. I've managed to get the following setup to work:
modem > time capsule (which creates a wireless network) > powerline adapter 1 > powerline adapter 2 > imac
But to achieve the setup I want, would require me to buy another powerline adapter (for the Express), and it seems silly to have to use a powerline adapter for my iMac when it is right next to the TC.
    Any help would be appreciated.

modem > time capsule (which creates a wireless network) > powerline adapter 1 * > powerline adapter 2 > airport express
    * But as well as connecting an ethernet cable to powerline adapter 1, also connect one from TC to my iMac.
When I tried connecting an ethernet cable to the TC in my original setup, the iMac lost connection to the internet. I've managed to get the following setup to work:
What you are attempting should work fine. The TC should be able to manage multiple ethernet connections as well as the wireless.
Investigate what is happening when you plug ethernet into the TC from the imac.
Please try it.. turn off wireless in the imac to ensure ethernet is the only connection.
But I would recommend you shut off the whole network at that point. Restart everything in order.. modem .. TC.. EOPs.. Express.. clients.. with 2min gap between them.
Now look at the imac and check the network preferences.. did it pick up the correct IP from the TC? It should have router (gateway) and DNS all correct using dhcp.. if not check the connectivity light on the TC.. does it come on when you plug in the ethernet cord?
Open a terminal on the mac and ping the TC address. does it respond?
Give a few screen shots of how the TC is setup.. bridge, router and what IP it is running. Even just the summary page.

  • How to setup NPIV as Cisco9124 directly linked a Emulex HBA N-port

I had a cisco9124 switch and enabled npiv on the switch.
also I had a HBA card, and setup a N-port.
I can find the N-port pwwn number on the cisco9124,

    my question is:
my  configuration is correct? can let 9124 directly linked a HBA N-port as  NPIV configuration? I think something is wrong. I am no NPV device.
how can let the virtual ports know which actual port manage the virtual ports.
    I mean for example:
my fc1/8 port is with 4 virtual ports, how to setup the 4 virtual ports to fc1/8,
or  just donot care the fc1/8, just found all the virtual ports and setup  the virtual ports luns, then my emulex HBA card will find the luns?
    BRs

we use Qlogic 4G 2-port HBA and use RHEL5 OS on DellT105
we are in RHEL5 created 4 virtual ports on one port of HBA.
then we can find the 4 virtual pwwn on our MDS9124, then I added the pwwn on our vsan and reactivated.
then created 4 luns, each lun assigned to each virtual port separately, finally I checked our RHEL5, only found 1 lun is correct.  found 2 luns lost and 1 luns allocated to 2 virtual HBA.

  • How to extend wifi range using Airport Extreme and Airport Express connected via ethernet cable

    Hello,
I'm having an Airport Extreme fifth generation in my living room. I bought yesterday an Airport Express to extend the range of my WIFI in the house and I put in in my bed room. The two devices are connected together via an ethernet cable, from airport extreme (lan 1 port) to airport express to (wan port). Now from the airport utility what configuration I have to set to the airport express in order to extend my wifi range? Inside the wireless tab what i have to select in the network mode?
    1. Create a wireless network (use same same wireless network name and pass work as the airport extreme)
    2. Join a wireless network
    3 Extend a wireless network ?
    Thank you

You are way overthinking this. The utility will literally configure everything for you automatically. All that you need to do is name the device and click Next during the setup.
You can use your Mac using Mountain Lion or an iPhone or iPad.
Post back if you need the steps.

  • Can't connect to Internet via Airport but CAN via Ethernet

Yeah so I have tried TWO different of my AX's and can not connect to the internet via EITHER even though Network Status says "you are connected to the internet via Airport". But, if I hook the ethernet cable directly to the computer from the modem it connects to the internet fine. What am I missing. Oh yeah, and on one of the AX's the "music" tab does not appear next to the "WDS" tab thus not allowing AirTunes on that AX, any ideas on that too? PLEASE HELP!!

CONNECTED!! After resetting the modem, llike you suggested, I am able to get the wireless network back up and running, BUT...I am still having problems with one base station not showing the "music" tab and thus not letting me stream music to it. When I hit "configure" the tab shows for a quick second then disappears. Any idea?

  • How do I use my iBook with a hotel's ethernet connection?

When a hotel just has an ethernet connection, I can never come up with the right configuration to access it. Does anyone have the procedure?

    Plug in the ethernet.
    (Turn on/log in your iBook)
    Open browser
    Go to a website.
    It should now load.
If for some reason the obvious is not working, do this.
    Open System preferences.
    Click Network
Now at the top pull down the menu and select network status.
There should now be a line that says ethernet.
In that line it should say "connected, your IP address is x." If it does not say that it is connected, what does the error say?

  • My mac mini will connect via airport but not via ethernet.

I have had a mac mini for several months which I connect via ethernet because it is in a part of my house where the wireless signal is poor. I changed ISP and now I can connect to the router wirelessly but not via ethernet. This doesn't seem to be a problem with the network as the connection works when I connect it to my mac book. Firewall is turned off. There were no major changes to the router settings other than changing the ISP login codes.
Any ideas? Is this a configuration issue or a hardware problem?

    Hi Mick,
If your router only supports 10/100 ethernet then it is possible that the auto-detect feature is not working properly to adjust to that speed. The mini has a Gigabit ethernet port. The OS by default sets the port to automatically negotiate the rate but it does not always work and the result is the problem you are having.
To fix it you wlll have to manually set the rate to 100.
To do this, open your system preferences, Select Network. Highlight the ethernet port on the sidebar, click the advanced button. Click on the Ethernet Tab, set the configure pop-up menu item to 100baseTX and click the ok button. If all works out you should see that the Ethernet port icon should turn green.
    Hope this helps.

  • Why does Time Machine not work over wifi but only via ethernet cable ?

    Hi everyone,
It's been some time I have this problem now.
The first time I backed up my mac within Time Capsule with time machine, I chose to use the ethernet cable because the gigabit connection is much faster than the wifi for the first back up, but now, any time I want to update this back up, I need to connect the cable, cause "Time Machine can not connect to the Drive I picked" over wifi.
This is so annoying. Does anyone have a similar issue ?
    Any solution ?
When I got this "error" I can use Utility Airport and get full access to the drive, even in finder. The only thing that doesn't work is TimeMachine connecting to the drive, even if it is detected by TimeMachine itself.
    Thanks.
    Riccardo

    Typical Yosemite.
I suggest a full reconfigure of the TC.
    Follow this list..
No files are deleted on the TC doing this although you might have to repoint your laptop to the backup.
Note.. even if TM does connect it will say it is going to do a new backup.. it is only when it starts that it discovers the backup exists and increments it.
Start from a factory reset. No files are lost on the hard disk doing this.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
    Setup the TC again.
Then redo the setup from the computer with Yosemite.
    1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.
eg TCgen5 for basestation and and TCwifi wireless name.
If the issue is wireless use TC24ghz and TC5ghz with fixed channels as this also seems to help stop the nonsense. But this can be tried in the second round. ie plan on a first and second round of changes to fix this.. hopefully.. I will point out other steps that can be round2.
    2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.
    3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.
Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC. But this is important.. having IP drift all over the place when Yosemite cannot remember its own name for 5 min after a reboot makes for poor networking.
    4. Check your share name on the computer is not changing.. make sure it also complies with the above.. short no spaces and pure alphanumeric.. but this change will mess up your TM backup.. so be prepared to do a new full backup. Sorry.. keep this one for second round if you want to avoid a new backup.
    5. Mount the TC disk in the computer manually.
In Finder, Go, Connect to server from the top menu,
Type in SMB://192.168.0.254 (or whatever the TC ip is which you have now made static. As a router by default it is 10.0.1.1 and I encourage people to stick with that unless you know what you are doing).
You can use name.. SMB://TCgen5.local where you replace TCgen5 with your TC name.. local is the default domain of the TC and doesn't change.
However names are not so easy as IP address.. nor as reliable. At least not in Yosemite they aren't. The domain can also be an issue if you are not plugged or wireless directly to the TC.
    6. Make sure IPv6 is set to link-local only in the computer. For example wireless open the network preferences, wireless and advanced / TCP/IP.. and fix the IPv6. to link-local only. Do the same for ethernet if you use it.
There is a lot more jiggery pokery you can try but the above is a good start.. if you find it still unreliable.. don't be surprised.
You might need to do some more work on the computer itself. eg Reset the PRAM.. has helped some people. Clean install of the OS is also helpful if you upgrade installed.
    Tell us how you go.
Someone posted a solution.. See this thread.
Macbook can't find Time Capsule anymore
Start from the bottom and work up.. I have a list of good network practice changes but I have avoided Yosemites bug heaven.
Yosemite has serious DNS bug in the networking application.. here is the lets say more arcane method of fixing it by doing a network transplant from mavericks.

  • Problems Connecting to Airport Directly With an Ethernet Cable

    Hello,
I have a Time Warner cable modem connected to an airport, and everything is working fine for a wireless web connection. But in order to log on to VPN for work, I need to have a cable connection, not a wireless one.
I turned off the airport connection on my computer and first I tried using an ethernet cable to connect my laptop to the Airport. That didn't work. Then I tried connecting my laptop directly to the cable modem, and that didn't work either.
I used to have a DSL modem in my apartment, and if I turned my airport connection off and plugged into the DSL modem, I was still able to access the internet no problem.
Is there something different about plugging into the airport or the cable modem? Do I need change any settings on my computer? Do I need to reboot my computer, or the airport or the cable modem or all three?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Alice
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    Hi Alice,
I too have a Time Warner cable Modem and use a VPN with a Ethernet cable connected from my laptop to my Airport extreme. I did not switch ISP's but did switch hardware from a 2Wire portal to the Airport extreme. Could only access the internet and not connect to my Company's network via a VPN. Took a few days but I finally figured out a VPN solution using an ethernet cable hookup to Airport extreme from my work laptop. You will need port setting(s) from your IT department. Below are a few tips.
    1) Open Airport Utility and double click on your extreme network.
    2) At the top move from Airport and click on Internet.
    3) Once there, click on NAT (Network Address Translation)
    4) Check mark "enable default host" but use your static IP adapter address from your work PC/Laptop and not the default (use IPCONFIG to obtain)
    5) Check mark "enable NAT port mapping protocol" and at bottom click on configure port mapping at bottom of NAT
    6) From there your in the advance mode of your Airport Utility, and you add a
service and port(s). I did not click on any service but only defined using my company name and added the port settings.
7 I set the public TCP and UDP ports to 80
    8) The private IP address matched the IP address in the Internet NAT setting I mentioned in #4 above.
    8) The private TCP and UDP ports are the ports to open for your VPN which I got from my IT department. This can be a 5 digit number where mine starts with a 4.
The above worked for my ethernet connect from my work laptop to the Airport Extreme. I now can connect to my company's network using VPN and continue to work from home time to time. 8-)
Good Luck. My next step is to see if my work laptop can use the same settings for my VPN when I go wirelessly with my work Laptop.
    Good Luck....Reener
