How to share an itunes library on a pc and a mac

I am trying to share an iTunes library that is stored on a PC with a MacBook Air that is on my home network.  I cannot seem to get the shared library to display on the MacBook.  I have HomeSharing turned on with my Apple ID.

You cannot.  Your library is on that computer.  If you do not have that computer, then you do not have the library.
Have you failed to maintain a backup copy?
If so, not good, you can redownload some iTunes purchases in some countries.  Click Purchases under Quick Links in the iTunes store.

  • How to share one iTunes library with multiple computers AND Apple TV? Help?

It seems like my dilemma may not be easily solved. Hopefully it isn't as complicated as I think it will be. Here's the situation:
My wife hates that, in order to see or do anything with the images she takes, I need to have iPhoto open on my computer (Mac Pro), and she then has to connect to it over sharing.
By the same token, I don't like that she buys iTunes content on her MacBook, which is sometimes a duplicate of content I already have. Now that the App Store is out, that is going to start getting really expensive.
So instead, I want us to be able to:
    1) Have ONE iTunes library on the network, and ONE iPhoto library. Both of these would be accessible to any computer on the network. When you launch iTunes, you would get all the media that is in that library.
    2) Both be able to access iTunes at the same time to listen to / watch content.
    3) Both be able to purchase iTunes content, and when it it purchased, it updates that single library. If I buy a song, the next time my wife fires up iTunes, that song is there for her to listen to.
    4) Have our two Apple TV units be able to play content from this library.
So, I know that we need something on the network. I have a Drobo with DroboShare, so that is one option. I also have a spare Mac Pro laying around, along with a copy of OS X Leopard Server.
I just don't know what route we should take with this. All I want is for us to share a library, to be able to both use that library, for us to be able to sync content from that library to our portable devices, and for our Apple TVs to also see that library.
    Possible?!

I'm sort of in the same boat. We've got an iMac with separate User Accounts set up and are currently sharing the same iTunes and iPhoto libraries along with streaming them to our Apple TV.
Right now I'm the only one with an iPod, however she'll be getting one in a couple of weeks.
We also just picked up a MacBook yesterday and I'd like to be able to sync certain libraries like iTunes and iPhoto so that no content gets duplicated on either the iMac or MacBook and so that we both have access to the current libraries for each program on our iPods and AppleTV.
I have an external hard drive that I back up the iMac on and I assume I could manually keep things current with that but there's got to be an easier way...that's why these are Macs right?

  • How to move my iTunes library from Windows PC to new Mac

I have been using a PC running Microsoft Windows 7 64 bit for the last 12 months or so. I have now purchased a Mac. I want to move my iTunes library from the PC to the Mac.
The PC setup is running the latest version of iTunes for Windows, however, the music etc. is not stored in the default location, instead it is stored on an external HDD (it's approximately 700GB, so too large to have on the internal HDD).
Anyone know the best/easiest way to make the switch and in doing so maintain all my playlists etc.?

So, what I have done so far to try to achieve this is:
I have my Windows PC with it's NTFS formatted external HDD containing the music etc.
I have my Mac with a new external HDD formatted in Mac OS Extended (Journaled).
    On the Windows PC:
    * I opened up iTunes.
    * Went into Preferences, and then under the Advanced tab I checked both 'Keep iTunes Media Folder Organised' and 'Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to library', so that all the files would be in the main iTunes Media folder when I copy it over.
    * Then File, Library, Organise Library and ticked the 'Consolidate Files' so that it moves any files that aren't in the right folder.
Next I copied the files over. So I copied the updated media folder from the NTFS (Windows) external HDD onto the Mac external HDD.
And I copied the files from in My Documents/Music/iTunes on the Windows PC to User/Music on the Mac.
But this doesn't seem to have done it.

  • How to share an iTunes library

I have an iTunes library that is probably 90% music I added from CDs I own and the other 10% purchased from the iTunes Store.  Is there a way to copy (or share) this library to my wife's mac on the same network?  Or do I need to add an external drive and move my iTunes media library there for access by both computers.  Also, can all the music be shared on her computer, or only the 90% that I didn't purchase from the iTunes Store?

  • HT202213 How to share families itunes library to iphone 4 without syncing?

I have my iphone 4 synced to my Macs itunes library and I want to "share" my moms itunes library music to my iphone WITHOUT "syncing" my phone to her itunes account. Is this even possible? and how would I do this?
I remember "sharing" my cousins itunes music onto my ipod without syncing and removing all my existing music. Is it different with iphones and ipods??

You can use home sharing to access that music without actually putting it on your iPhone. It will stream it over the local Wi-Fi network. Please follow the steps in the following article to get home sharing enabled and set up.

    Hey jimyam,
Thanks for the question. If you wish to access your music library from multiple devices, anywhere, It sounds like iTunes Match may be the right service for you:
    Apple - iTunes - Match
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/
With iTunes Match, all your music can be stored in iCloud — even songs you’ve imported from CDs. You can access your music from all your devices and listen to your entire library wherever you are. And you'll also be able to listen to iTunes Radio without ads.

  • How To Share An iTunes Library Among Several Users

I want to migrate my iTunes library to an external HD, to free some space in the iMac, and be able to share and add files in the same library among the family members in my iMac.

Niel's instructions don't cover you 100%.  You want to keep things on a different drive and there won't be a "shared" folder there. That's only on your main drive.  You also have to migrate media and/or your library to a different drive using a special process or you will end up breaking all your music links.
You need to clearly state what you want to share.  You can share just media or you can share your whole library structure.  Sharing only media is safest but if you share a common media pool you will all have to keep each other appraised of additions (and deletions, because those too will affect everybody) from the pool.  You have to be pretty trusting and coordinated on this.  Alternatively you can make it so others can copy your media but you will each have your own copy of the file so if somebody else wants to change the name on a track it doesn't do it to the copy you use too.  Of course this takes up the most space but is the safest.  Which migration procedure to do will depend upon your answers to this section.
Finally, I hope you have a backup plan implemented on this.  Nobody will be happy when that external drive fails and it all disappears.

  • HOW TO SHARE MY ITUNES LIBRARY WITH MY WIFE ON SAME IMAC WITH DIFFERENT USER ACCOUNTS AND APPLE ID'S. PLEASE HELP, SOMEBODY!

I just created an Apple Id for my wife and a user account for her.  We are on the same computer (iMac). I cant for the love of God get my itunes library to show on her user account on computer.  My library shows up under shared library when i select it it just keeps loading and nothing.  When i try the hold down option while opening itunes on her user account and then choose library my library doesnt show up as option.  What in the world am i doing wrong, why is Apple making this so difficult. We are not going to buy separte computers just to share itunes content. Please help.

You can sync devices with the same iCloud ID, not seperate ones.
If she has a different login on your Mac, make sure she has her own ID defined in System Prefs > iCloud

  • How to transfer my ITunes library from External Hard Drive to Mac Book Pro

I recently had an issue with my Mac Book(OS X Yosemite)  Had to take it to the store and they fixed it (replaced graphics mother board or something like that) Before that  I backed up the whole laptop on an external hard drive. When I connect the external hard drive I can open all my files, not sure how to transfer it, I see the External hard drive and can drag it but where do i drag it because on my Mac Book I can't  find Music. Should I drag it to the desktop and then drag it to the music when I disconnect the external ? Thanks

Choose Home from the Finder's Go menu, double-click the Music item, and drag it there.
