How to share and UPDATE library between PC and Mac

Hi all,
So, I tried to find some info on this problem, and didn't really come up with anything. Maybe a better search is needed, but I was hoping that someone had dealt with this problem and could help me out.
I have Itunes 7 on a Windows XP machine. All of my music is local to that machine. My wife has a Macbook Pro, and wants access to the music as well. She wants access, and wants to be able to create playlists and manage her iPod on the Mac, while I want to do the same on the PC.
The problem with sharing the library is that all control is done on the PC. The problem with her importing the library is that any changes to file information I make on the PC breaks the association on the Mac.
So, what I need is a way to update the library on the Mac when I update the library on the PC. If anyone has any info on this, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks,
Rob

We have upgraded to 7 on both, but both of us have a different Nano - so there isn't enough space to sync all of the library changes. Good thought though, it would probably work if we had a bigger iPod.

Thank you Joe - I tried this but it's only showing a teensy amount of music - the stuff on the second users account as opposed to the giagntic library on the 'main' account. I actually went to a Genius Bar and they said that apple doesn't really want you to share music between accounts - parents don't want to hear their kids music etc. Which seemed strange, but it might be the case sadly   Thanks anyway!

  • I would like the share an iTunes library between two different accounts on one Mac. How do I do this?

iTunes no longer works properly (aka at all) while using one of the user accounts set up on my iMac. It does, however, work when logging in under another user account on the same iMac. (if any of you can help me solve this issue that would be perfect). If there is no solution can anyone help with my request to share an iTunes library between two different accounts on one Mac. How do I do this?

that works for anything he purchases after he creates the new account.  What about his current music that currently resides in my itunes library?  How can I get his current music out of my library into his new account/library??  Thanks..
Copy it to his computer into his iTunes library and authorize his computer with the iTunes account used to purchase them..
You cannot tranfser items from one iTunes account to another. Purchased items remain part of the iTunes account is was purchased with.
iTunes account - used to purchase items
iTunes library - where purchases (and CD RIPs) go on the computer

  • Share iTunes Library between on same Mac between OSX & Parallels WinXP

Does anyone know if its possible to somehow share my iTunes library on my MacPro (10.5.4) between both my Mac OS, and also with my Parallels Windows XP OS, which is installed on the same computer?
I'd like to be able to take advantage of some of the various software utilities (tagging, etc...) that are available for the Window version of iTunes, but not for the Mac...and seeing as how altering the tags of my iTunes music would be one of the things on my agenda if I can share my iTunes Library between my Mac-OS and my Virtual-XP-OS, I just want to be absolutely certain that to avoid potentially screwing things up by changing meta tags and other information (album art, etc...) via iTunes on my XP virtual machine, such that the changes made wouldn't be recognized when I next open iTunes on my Mac...
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... Thanks!

I have a Macbook Pro with Vista and OSX via bootcamp and my iTunes runs from the same set of files. I haven't bothered to test this out in a virtual pc environment, but I would assume it would work.
Now, I am not entirely familiar with Parallels, but I imagine that all you have to do is select your Mac library data as the a new library for your Windows iTunes.
    To do this:
    Boot windows XP in Parallels
Hold down the shift key, then open iTunes with that key still held.
This will prompt you to select an iTunes library.
Simply browse for your Library data file for Mac OSX (By default this is under user\music\iTunes\iTunes Library) It may appear as a .itl file.
Select this and your iTunes libraries should remain in sync with each other despite edits in different OS's. After any edits are made on a different OS, iTunes will simply run a quick update bar when booting to resync.

  • Share a Referenced Library between 2 Macs

    Hi there,
Sorry if this has been asked before.
Recently I am planning to merge the two libraries from my 2011 iMac and 2012 MBPr. Currently I have an individual Managed Library on each of them, where the library on my iMac stores all the pictures, and my MBPr's library only contains those pics that I thought are nice and were exported into it from my iMac. The problem is, as the files on my iMac pile up, it is getting insanely slow at startup and loading files. It has come to a point when I want to empty the Aperture library on my iMac and store it elsewhere on an external drive. I would like to also share this library with my MBPr to save up SSD space, but I want to make it a Referenced LIbrary, where I can view the pics on my MBPr even when the drive is disconnected, and since that working with a managed library via USB2 on my iMac seems like a beach-ball-forever game. I reckon that a managed library would be as easy as dragging the library in finder to the external drive, but building a referenced library seems a little tricky to me. So, any ideas how I can do it?
Second question is, what drives would you recommend? I am looking at HGST Touro S 1TB which is portable and has a 7200 rpm drive. The down side is, its USB3 only works at its maximum speed with my MBPr, but not the old iMac that only has USB2. Is USB3 + Firewire 800, 7200 rpm portable drive an option? I really haven't seen one that supports both of them at a reasonable price, not to mention the ridiculously overpriced thunderbolt drives which give negligible advantage on speed compared to USB3 when using traditional HDDs.
TL;DR: Can I share a Referenced Library between 2 macs? If so, how?
TL;DR2: What external drives would you recommend?
Thank you very much in advance!

There is, but it's very limited.
    1. Put the Library on a disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    2. Point both machines at it.
    3. That's it.
    But remember:
A strong warning: If you're trying to edit the Library (that is, make albums, move photos around, keyword, make books or slideshows etc.) or edit individual photos in it via Wireless be very careful. Dropouts are a common fact of wireless networking, and should one occur while the app is writing to the database then your Library will be damaged. Simply, I would not do this with my Libraries.
    Also
Only one user can open a library at a time.

  • What is the best way to share a iTunes library between 5 users on the same computer?

What is the best way to share a iTunes library between 5 users on the same computer?
Currently I have a common itunes library in a shared folder that each user is linked to.  The problem is that when one user adds music to the shared file, it does not automaticaly appear to other users when they open their iTunes.  They have to go to the shared library and select the new music in order to make it visable in their iTunes.
Would iTunes file shareing fix this problem?
    Thanks

Rick, are you saying that if you try to share a folder outside of home and use sharepoints, then the other mac wont prompt you to log in? Have you tried that? It is hard to believe that is the case
I am sort of saying that. Have you tried it? I know it's hard to believe, but you really need to help us out by trying some steps that you don't believe.
We can't see what your exact situation is. We sort of know what's worked for us out here. Just trying to help you get this going in less than 24 hours!
Sharepoints manages the samba configuration file. It's free software that puts a pretty face on an otherwise cumbersome config file.
    Give it a shot.
windows will not prompt for passwords, I have tried this with multiple computer at home for both vista and xp
As I stated. You will not get prompted on windows, if you have set up sharing in an insecure fashion. You are not using a secured sharing situation.
    No argument with your statement.

  • How to share administrator iPhoto library with other users on same iMac?

How to share administrator iPhoto library with other users on same iMac?

This is the part I'm referring to:
If you want the other user to be able to see the pics, but not add to, change or alter your library, then enable Sharing in your iPhoto (Preferences -> Sharing), leave iPhoto running and use Fast User Switching to open the other account. In that account, enable 'Look For Shared Libraries'. Your Library will appear in the other source pane.
Any user can drag a pic from the Shared Library to their own in the iPhoto Window.
Remember iPhoto must be running in both accounts for this to work.
The library stays in the Pictures folder for this.

Can i share an iPhoto library between 2 computers, it I store my library on a AS drive connected to an AirPort Extrême Base Station ?

    on a AS drive
Do you mean NAS drive? No.
iPhoto needs to have the Library sitting on disk formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Users with the Library sitting on disks otherwise formatted regularly report issues including, but not limited to, importing, saving edits and sharing the photos.
Will it be wireless? That's good for viewing but...

  • Can I share one iTunes Library between 2 different Windows Users?

I'm having syncing issues (discussed in a different post) with using my 2nd Gen Shuffle and 30G iPod video from the same instance of iTunes. Previously I tried creating a 2nd user on my Windows PC and using my Shuffle with another instance of iTunes loaded by the 2nd user. This worked fine, but I would like to avoid the necessity to rip my CDs to both user's iTunes instances.
Can I rip my CDs to only one of the iTunes instances and share this iTunes Library between both instances of iTunes?
    Thanks for any assistance......

  • How to sever the update connection between my 2 iPhones?

I have an iPhone 4 and and 2 iPhone 5's that I use together.  they have an auto update function that when I add a contact or note in one phone, it automatically updates the other 2 phones.  I want to know how to sever the update function between phones.  anyone know how to do?

I suspect the reason your devices are still syncing contacts is that they are syncing them with another service such as Google, Yahoo or and exchange account rather than iCloud.  Go to Settings>Mail,Contacts,Calendars and tap each of your accounts to see if you have contacts syncing turned on.  If you do, you'll have to turn that off in order to stop syncing them across your devices.
If only some of your notes are syncing across your devices, it's probably because not all of them belong to the iCloud account (iCloud only syncs contacts that belong to the iCloud account).  If you want them all to sync with iCloud, you'll have to open the Notes app, tap Accounts, then open the notes in your non-iCloud accounts and copy and paste the text into new notes created in the iCloud account.
To have your photos sync between your phones, go to Settings>iCloud>Photos and make sure My Photo Stream is turned on.  After that, new photos added to the camera roll will be added to your photo stream whenever the Camera app is closed, your photo is connected to wifi, and has at least 20% battery life remaining.  You can access these photos in the My Photo Stream album within the Photos app.
To determine if you're backing up to iCloud, go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup to see if iCloud Backup is turned on.
If you delete your iCloud account from your phone and want to keep your date, begin by saving any photo stream photos to your camera roll and emailing any notes that you are syncing with iCloud to yourself.  Then go to Settings>iCloud, tap Delete Account, provide your password and choose Keep on My iPhone when prompted.
If you create a new account on one of your phones you can sync the data in the new account with your other phones in the future by simply signing into the same account on your other phones in Settings>iCloud.  When you do, the iCloud data in the new account will download to them as well.

  • Can some please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my Mac

Can someone please provide instructions on how to import an iPhoto library from an old Mac to a new Mac without getting a bunch of duplicates?  I tried transferring my pictures using an external hard drive and then copying it to the Pictures folder on my new Mac.  I ended up getting a bunch of duplicates. My old Mac has an older version of iPhoto while the new Mac has iPhoto '11.  Is that the cause of the problem?  Please advise.  Thanks.

Simply copy the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder on the old Machine to the Pictures Folder on the new Machine.
    Then launch iPhoto. That's it.
This moves photos, events, albums, books, keywords, slideshows and everything else.

  • Share my aperture library on two differents mac

Hello I need to know how and if I can share my aperture library on two differents mac (one iMac and one Macbook). I' d like to work on my project also on my macbook at home with wifi and also outdoor if possible...
Thank you for the help .....

The safest way to do what you want to do, would be to put your Aperture Library on a small external disk  that you can connect to any machine you want. Apple does not support network access to the Aperture Library, so you may run into problems if you put your library onto a network volumn, see this support article:
Aperture: Use locally mounted Mac OS X Extended volumes for your Aperture library
         http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3252
However, you could decide to keep the master image files on a network volumn and have a local copy of your Aperture Library on each machine, but then you would have to take care to synchronize the two copies of your library regularly.

Reinstall OS X over the top of your current install. That willl replace files you have deleted and leave your personal files alone.
