How to share the music folder with multiple libraries efficiently?

Hi,
Me and my husband use the same computer, but have our own seperate user account on it. We have setup iTunes such that for each user account iTunes points to the same central music folder (on a seperate large disc). So effectively we are sharing the mp3/m4p/m4a files, but not the library.
So each user account has it's own iTunes library file with playlists, ratings etc. This is all fine, but if either of us adds something to the library (by importing a CD or by purchasing music), it is not automatically reflected in the other library.
The workaround we found for this is to drag the iTunes folder to the library every time you know that the other user made changes... It works, but it is not very efficient.
Any suggestions are welcome!
As a sidenote: for photo's we use Picasa from Google in a similar fashion (shared storage, different libraries) and here it works. When starting, Picasa automatically detects changes in the photo folder and updates the library accordingly.

You are doing the same thing I do at home. Except we just add the files that have been newly added rather than the whole library each time.
What we did is decide that all importing from CD will be with one account. This is just to make things easier keeping track of new adds. What we do is CDs that have been added are kept in a rack next to computer. If my wife wants the files all she has to do is add the files from the common storage drive then put the disc in storage.

  • How can I share the home folder with different accounts on the same mac?

    Hi, here's a question:
How can I share the home folder with different accounts on the same mac?
The whole point being not to have to install all my apps, and move all my files each time between users.
The second thing would be to be able to modify one document on one account, and have it changed on the other account without having to copy it.
I would like to have a pro and a private account on my mac.
    Thanks for you answers,
    Doug

Your apps should not be installed in your home folder--they should be in /Applications where every user can access them.
If you want to share things between users on the same Mac, use the /Users/Shared folder. Keep your home folder private. Trying to defeat the protections on the home folder subfolders just gets messy. I've never bothered to figure out all of the problems associated with it so I can't explain how to do it.
Even with using Shared, you would need to alter the ACLs on the shared folder in order to allow both users to modify the documents.
You must create a Group in Users & Groups and put each user in that group. Then create a folder inside /Users/Shared where you want to share the various files.
Then, add an ACL to the shared folder that gives the group special permissions. on that folder.
    sudo chmod -R +a "<sharinggroup> allow delete,chown,list,search,add_file,add_subdirectory,delete_child,file_inherit,directory_inherit" /Users/Shared/<sharing folder>
Replace <sharinggroup> and <sharingfolder> with the name of your group and your folder. Then, run the command in the Terminal.
With that ACL, each user in <sharinggroup> will be able to alter the files created by any user in the group in that <sharingfolder>.
Essentially, the client OS is not designed for true file sharing among the individual users. It is designed to isolate each user account from the others.

  • I've update my music using an external disk; now I uploaded agin the music  but it doesn't appear in Itunes. How can I synchronize the music folder with Itunes?

I've managed my music downloading and uploading it from an external disk; I put the music into the Finder MUSIC folder and copyed it into Itubìnes but it does't appear. What Do I have to do? How can I synchronize the Musice Folder with Itunes?

    Chris, thanks for the reply.
That's what I'm confused about. I did exactly what you said. I copied the entire music folder from the old computer and put it in the music folder on the new computer. I've tried that two or three times now. And, I've checked, and all of the files are there (that's what I meant by 'clicking on Itunes Media'--when I click on the iTunes media folder in music/itunes in Finder, all of the files are there). But, when I open iTunes, nothing shows up--no movies, no music, no tv shows. It seems like it should be so simple, but it won't work for me.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks so much.

how to share the Mac folder to open windows without password?

No easy way. Unless you use the same username and the same password on both system then you have to enable Windows File Sharing (SMB) in Sharing, add your Mac username and type in your password in the options of Sharing and then set a NetBIOS name and a workgroup name that is the same on both Windows and Mac. That is in the Network section under advanced WINS tab.

  • How to share my music library with an iPod

Sync it to the same computer with iTunes installed on it that you sync the music on your device with.

  • How to highlight the entire folder with the tag color, as before?

I've always highlighted important folders with colors, so that they stand out among others in a list for quicker access. Now in Mavericks list view, there is only a small color dot to the right of the folder's name (sometimes very far from the folder's name if the column is large). As a result, it is much harder to pick important folders. Is there any way to apply the tag color to the whole folder, as it used to be in all previous systems? Or at the very least, to move the dot to the left of the folder name within lists, as in Icon view? I really hope Apple did not remove this feature simply for the sake of design. Thanks.

mistersquid, S. G. is actually referring to the new Tags feature in Mavericks. This replaces entirely the Labels feature in previous versions of the OS, as far as I can tell.
Labels would let you apply a color highlight to a folder. It would appear as a color behind the entire row.
With Mavericks, however, Labels are gone and are replaced with Tags, which just puts a small colored dot off to the right of the folder name (and it's always like this, not just when you click on the folder), and some of these aren't distinct enough from one another (i.e. purple and gray look almost identical if you're scrolling through a series of "gray" folders pretty quickly—you may miss that one purple dot). Also, like S. G. mentioned, these can be pretty far off in your periphery if you've got long folder names, so this just adds another level of "hard-to-see-ness" (it's a technical term ).
I'm a graphic designer and I have been using Labels to colorize my job folders according to their current status. For example:
No label = job is open/in progress.
The next color schemes were more of a "stop light" effect, going from red to green:
Red = job is approved. Prep final files and send to printer/client.
Yellow = job is done. Prepare job ticket/calculate time for billing.
Green = job is done and job ticket is ready to go (hence the green color) to my co-worker for billing/invoicing.
Gray = job is finished/billed/closed (i.e., I've "grayed it out").
Purple = job transferred to another co-worker (i.e., I got too busy and they're working on it now). This one is a rarer color, and with Tags it's a bit difficult to discern one or two purple (more like a light lavender) dots in a sea of gray ones.
I agree with S. G. and would love to see a stronger means of identifying the status of a project at a glance reappear—perhaps as a selectable alternative to Tags in the Finder preferences (because I can definitely see how the two means of colorizing a folder could compete with one another), like a checkbox to the effect of "Use Labels instead of Tags," similar to the "Open folders in tabs instead of new windows" option.
Feedback submitted. Thanks, yodathejedi, for the link.

  • How to share one iTunes library with multiple computers AND Apple TV? Help?

It seems like my dilemma may not be easily solved. Hopefully it isn't as complicated as I think it will be. Here's the situation:
My wife hates that, in order to see or do anything with the images she takes, I need to have iPhoto open on my computer (Mac Pro), and she then has to connect to it over sharing.
By the same token, I don't like that she buys iTunes content on her MacBook, which is sometimes a duplicate of content I already have. Now that the App Store is out, that is going to start getting really expensive.
So instead, I want us to be able to:
    1) Have ONE iTunes library on the network, and ONE iPhoto library. Both of these would be accessible to any computer on the network. When you launch iTunes, you would get all the media that is in that library.
    2) Both be able to access iTunes at the same time to listen to / watch content.
    3) Both be able to purchase iTunes content, and when it it purchased, it updates that single library. If I buy a song, the next time my wife fires up iTunes, that song is there for her to listen to.
    4) Have our two Apple TV units be able to play content from this library.
So, I know that we need something on the network. I have a Drobo with DroboShare, so that is one option. I also have a spare Mac Pro laying around, along with a copy of OS X Leopard Server.
I just don't know what route we should take with this. All I want is for us to share a library, to be able to both use that library, for us to be able to sync content from that library to our portable devices, and for our Apple TVs to also see that library.
    Possible?!

I'm sort of in the same boat. We've got an iMac with separate User Accounts set up and are currently sharing the same iTunes and iPhoto libraries along with streaming them to our Apple TV.
Right now I'm the only one with an iPod, however she'll be getting one in a couple of weeks.
We also just picked up a MacBook yesterday and I'd like to be able to sync certain libraries like iTunes and iPhoto so that no content gets duplicated on either the iMac or MacBook and so that we both have access to the current libraries for each program on our iPods and AppleTV.
I have an external hard drive that I back up the iMac on and I assume I could manually keep things current with that but there's got to be an easier way...that's why these are Macs right?

  • How to share the same mask across multiple layers?

Say one needs multiple layers, one above another, to share the same layer mask. Is there any smart way to tell all those layers they have to use the same mask? As opposed to copying the same mask into all layers. The latter approach has the disadvantage that, when you need to change the mask, you need to copy it again into all layers that must share it.
    Thank you.

Put the Layers in a Set and apply the mask to that.

  • How can I merge music purchased with multiple apple-id's?

Hi, I have purchased music on iTunes with two different Apple-id's. Don't ask me why but years ago I created another id for a reason I am unable to recollect.
Now I want to merge all purchases onto one id.. Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks for your kind help!

No, it's not currently possible to merge accounts nor to transfer content from one account to another account - content will remain tied to the account that downloaded it.

  • Is there a way to convert files that are in the music folder to Audiobooks?

I have a bunch of audiobooks that I loaded off CDs that ended up in the Music Folder with all my music. I want to know if there is a way to move them to the Audiobooks folder? Convert or something? Please let me know.

You first need to convert them to .m4.
    Simple enough.
iTunes prefs -> Advanced -> Importing.
Set to AAC, 64 kbps stereo, optimize for voice.
Select them all in itunes, go to menu Advanced -> Convert selection to AAC.
Use this -> Make Bookamarkable to change the file type and extension.

  • How can I share the music on my ipad with my imac using home sharing?

I’ve been trying to share the music on my ipad with my imac. I've set my apple ID account on both of them but I can't get any of the songs I purchased on my ipad to my imac. Even though, when I click my albums it shares the music on my imac to  my ipad. the reason why I couldn't do this before was that I had recently purchased my ipad and created a new account that was different from the account on my imac. so can I use home sharing on itunes with my ipad and imac? and if not then how else could I share the music on my ipad to the itunes on my imac?

iOS: Setting up Home Sharing on your device - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4557 - "With Home Sharing in iOS 4.3 or later, you can stream your entire iTunes library over your home Wi-Fi network from your Mac or PC right to your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch."
The above makes it sound like it is one way, computer to mobile device.  Perhaps something below says differently.

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
    You can't merge accounts.
You can however share or import content from another library/account using homesharing.
