How to share USB drives from iMac to Macbook?

I have an iMac that has 2x500GB external USB 2.0 drives connected. I want to be able to access these drives via my Macbook as I have my entire Photo collections as well as iTunes on them.
I have turned on file sharing on both systems, I am able to connect form my Macbook to the iMac using:
afp://imac.local
However it will only display the "Macintosh HD" and "<Username>" mounts, that's all.
I am also authenticating using my iMac administrator account.
If anyone can help, please fill me in. I am also assuming this can be done, I mean its simply 2 USB drives being shared, shouldn't be too dificult.

If all you need to do is share your iPhotos and iTunes libraries, then there is an easier way. Open each apps preferences, click on the Sharing icon in the respective toolbars, check the box to share the library with all local machines on your network.
Otherwise, what you've done appears to be working. You say the shared machine is mounting. You should then be able to access the mounted disk volume. When you log in to the 'server' computer you must use a username and password of an existing account on the 'server' machine otherwise you will be logged in as 'guest' and have limited access.

I would like to know if it is possible to partition, and format, a USB drive (or HDD for that matter) from LV. I could really use an automated program to find a specific device and partition/format it.
It is to be used by production personnel, and 'diskpart' is a bit too low level for them.
Ideally my application should recognise a USB memory stick, partition/format it and write an image file ('imagex' from the Windows prompt).
I'm using the newst LV and Windows 7.
Is any of the above possible, and where do I look?

you can also get your information if you use the "system exec" function to call the diskpart.exe. Call it with a script as parameter and parse the result. Attached you'll find an example and the result from my system.

You are allowed to have up to two activated installations of each version license you own, so unless you have already installed it to another system, you should be fine. If not, phone customer support. I've never heard of them refusing to reset a person's activations.

Both have the latest operating system etc. By connecting the two with a cable I have no trouble moving files from my iMac to my MacBook. You have not told us which versions of OS X either machine is running.

How do I update files from iMac to Macbook

Having updated a Numbers file on iMac, opened iCloud on iMac,uploaded file & downloaded (updated iPhone & iPad but not Macbook).
Reset iCloud & restarted all devices, but no change in Macbook.
Tried copy & pasting from iCloud to Numbers but just end up with a jumble of figures in one column.
Any suggestions?

HI tasclix, it depends what you mean by an OS X boot drive.
If you want a recovery disk from which you can reinstall (by re-downloading) or recover from a time machine backup, then nbar is correct.
If, however, you want to boot and run the OS X installer from the USB drive (so that you don't need to download again), then you will need a copy of "Install OS X Mavericks.app"; see this article:

Before downloading again, search your system to see if the installer is still there - it's usually in the /Applications folder unless it has been deleted, but check your whole system for it anyway, you never know, you might still have it somewhere.

unless you're sharing very large files, speed will be more or less the same using any of the above connections.

If your machine is in warranty, be careful not to do anything more that might damage it when removing it from the optical drive. Are you using one of the newer iMac's with no DVD drive? If so, you can either get an external CD/DVD drive (any make - doesn't have to be Apple) or, if you have another Mac on the same network that has a CD/DVD drive you may be able to do it by turning on 'DVD or CD Sharing' on that Mac (System Preferences>Sharing). Hopefully you'll see the disk on the Mac without the DVD drive and be able to install from there.
