How does one record movie in N900 I see there is no icon in the menu area for video. How can I do video recording?

open up the camera app, than on the right you will see some settings, one of them has an "A" icon, press on it, and click on automatic video from the left corner.

Yes the voice isn't reaching the amp although it is registering on the input bar in the Sound System Prefs, just won't "play through" as it were. I can't see how it could be done I was just hoping someone might see something I am missing.
It seems a shame that you can't do it as iTunes on an old iBook makes a good juke box for DJ'ing and with everything becoming wireless these days it seems sensible that you could cut that one last wire.

I cannot view video Exif (i.e., camera settings) data in Bridge. I can see it for still images. I shoot video in both MOV and MTS, but can see it for neither. How do I view it?

Thanks. Is there some equivalent of Exif information for video? For stills, I shoot RAW and much appreciate being able to veiw the camera settings once the file is in Bridge. I'm new to video. It would be even more helpful for me to see the video details, so I can better learn from my practicing. I can view some video file data in my camera after shooting: f-stop, white balance method, compression method, aspect ratio, and frame rate. So, this data is being captured and stored on my memory card. After downloading to Bridge, I'd like to be able to view this same info there. Is this possible?

Need Advice on Shooting Video in Public

Long story short, we need some b-roll footage of trucks (18 wheelers) in action, on the highway, at truck stops, etc. Am I allowed to shoot video of a highway from a public vantage point and use it in my video? I really don't want to get into the issue of release forms and such, and I don't see how I'm going to flag down some trucker to get his signature after the fact anyway. I work for a state agency, so I really can't allow us to take on any sort of legal liability and the video will be very public, posted to our department's YouTube channel. The probability that a trucker might watch the video and recognize his rig is probably not high, but real enough to warrant consideration. If this were to happen and the guy was unhappy about it, could this bite us in the rear? Or am I perfectly within my rights to shoot vehicles operating in a public space and post the footage in an equally public space? Can anyone advise? I'd appreciate it.

First, I am not an attorney, but have played one on TV. Next, I must state that I strongly believe in one's rights, regarding likenesses, property depictation, etc., but have a little story.
While shooting a series of brochures for the U of Denver School of Law, and in particular for their Transportation Law School in this case, my clients researched just such an issue, though regarding still images. I do not have all of the gory, legal details at this late date, but the finding was that so long as the units (rigs, passing autos and buses) were operating on public roads, they could be photographed, and the images used, even for commercial purposes, like the Law School's brochures. Though the railroad lines are not "public" in quite the same sense, as the highways are, they were also fair subjects to use. Airlines also fell into that category, though there was a little issue of using images of private aircraft, where their N numbers were shown. In those cases, a bit of Photoshop work satisfied the legal department. Not exactly sure what that was about.
In my case, the images were to be used internationally, but DU Law cleared everything with DOT for both the Feds and for the state of CO.
A quick call to the State AG's office, as suggested, should be just fine, and should easily clear things up. In your case, you have the potential for both the State of NY, and also the Feds to be involved, as the highways might be state, or Federal, depending on the exact highway.

BTW I tried using doferent setings in compressor from CBR and VBR I even pushed up the setings to 8 or 9 BR and still no luck !

Let's focus attention on just the Sony. (What model and what resolution are you shooting?)
For now, I'll assume you're shooting 1080i.
Take a representaive clip into a new sequence. Add a title.
In your sequence, make sure field dominance is set to Upper.
Set render settings to Pro Res 422.
After rendering, export QT self contained.
Import into Compressor (I'm now referring to v3.5).
Select the 90 minute Best quality DVD preset.
Open frame controls and turn on (click the gear icon). Set Resize filter to Best.
Submit burn and check quality on TV.

70D - bright lights cuasing artifacts when shooting video

I'm getting lots of artifacts created by bright light sources when shooting video. It seems to be the intensity of the light and not the type of light that is the problem. They show up in the picture as a kind of mirror reflection, often in green, on a different part of the image. Any ideas how to avoid this?

Hi,
Yes, those are definitely optically related flare effects.
And, yes, definitely try again without the UV filter, especially if it's an inexpensive, single-coated or uncoated filter. Any filter will increase flare effects when shooting in tough lighting situations like these, a high quality multi-coated might minimize it but still is likely to show some add'l flare. Cheaper filters can do horrid things to your images, potentially blurring them and causing focus errors, in addition to increasing flare effects.
Try using a lens hood, too. That physically protects the lens, but also can minimize veiling and other types of flare from bright light sources just outside the image area by preventing oblique light from striking the lens. The 50/1.8 has fairly well recessed front element, but a hood might help even more. Since you are using the lens on a crop sensor camera, instead of the OEM hood (which is designed for full frame), you might look for a 52mm screw-in hood designed for a short telephoto.
Unfortunately, you will still see some flare effects... The 50/1.8 isn't the best lens dealing with flare. The EF 50/1.4 and Sigma 50/1.4 both are better, but of course they cost more. Also, the 5-bladed aperture of the 50/1.8 contributes to the appearance of those flare effects... The 8-bladed aperture of the EF 50/1.4 or the 9-bladed aperture of the Sigma 50/1.4 give somewhat nicer background blur results (the eight curved blades or the premium EF 50/1.2L can be even better, but that's a rather pricey lens).
You also might experiment with stopping the lens down a little... both the Canon EF 50/1.8 and 50/1.4 are sharper at f2.0 or f2.2 than they are wide open. You might find they control flare better at a bit smaller aperture, too. I'd experiment with f4, f5.6 and f8, too.
A zoom lens likely would be worse than using a prime such as you are doing. But some zooms deal with flare pretty effectively.
Also watch the viewfinder and try slightly changing your position. Even just a little change can make a huge difference.
Compare these two images I made with my 24-70/2.8L.... I could see the flare occurring in the viewfinder and all I did to dodge a lot of it was change my position slightly.
I nearly always use a lens hood. Here's an example of the difference a lens hood can make. The EF-S 10-22mm lens has a huge lens hood that's a bit of a pain to pack. (Most Canon hoods reverse neatly on the lens for storage in minimal space. The 10-22mm's hood is just too large diameter to do that comfortably in any of my camera bags.) I thought about using the lens without any hood, since it's very shallow and doesn't seem it would be very effective anyway, so I did the following test shots...
As you can see, the first shot without the hood showed a very strong ghost flare. The second shot, after simply adding the hood, shows no flare at all. Note: it was a breezy day, so the clouds moved a bit while I was installing the lens hood. But, obviously the hood is effective. So I carry and use the hood, even if it is a bit of a pain.
Finally, there are times when flare effects can work for you, might actually add to the image. For example, I think that's the case here...
Above is a bit abstact... it's the sun reflecting off the corner of a building and was shot with an EF 100/2.8 USM macro lens. I think it would be pretty boring without the flare effects.
Regarding filters... I have various that I use, too. Including UV for "protection" (plus C-Pol and othersfor different purposes). They are all stored in my camera bag until actually needed. I never leave a filter on a lens all the time. IMO it's sort of silly to expect much real "protection" from a thin piece of glass (I've actually seen lenses gouged and damaged by broken filters). And there are just too many situations such as yours, where a filter can do more harm than good in the images. Another imporant factor... I use mostly B+W MRC and Hoya HMC or SHMC filters, which are high quality, multi-coated. There are other high quality brands... in fact most manufacturers offer different qrades at different price ranges.
Plus, when using a filter, it's even more important to use a lens hood as well, to keep oblilque light off the filter.

Shooting video in letter box (16:9)

I'm going on vacation and plan on shooting a lot of video and making a little short movie of all the things that we do. I just wanted to get some opinions of those more experienced in shooting video on how it looks in letter box, or would you reccomend just the standard dimensions for shooting the video.

As someone who has only shot videos in 16:9 ratio for the past 8 years, my opinion (that is all it is) is that 4:3 is just SO 20th century! Here in Europe you can barely give away an oldfashioned 4:3 TV. Now they are nearly all in widescreen - be they flatscreen or CRT - and all TV here in the UK is broadcast in widescreen.
It is much more than a fashion thing: 16:9, cinemascope, whatever version you think of, came into being because it much more accurately reflects the human eyes' angle of view. It looks better, and you see it better.
So having got that out of the way , I would be failing in my duty if I did not remind you that iMovie requires a digital DV stream fed to it by firewire. You should concentrate on mini-DV cameras recording on digital tape, and at all costs avoid anything that records on mini-hard disks, or any other format, or those that cannot connect to your Mac by firewire.
And no, modern cameras (even mine, which is 8mm analogue and 8 years old) do not produce 16:9 by 'chopping off the top and bottom of the picture', a fact easily confirmed by the viewfinder: you will see the same height in both 16:9 and 4:3, but in 16:9 you will either see the full picture in a modern viewfinder or screen, or a 'squashed' view of the scene (which is what mine does).
When you import the footage into iMovie, in order to preserve the 16:9 ratio, select 'DV widesacreen' in preferences, and uncheck 'automatic letterboxing'. Oh, and set your camera to 16 bit sound!

Shooting video in 25 fps. Is it best to convert to 24 fps in FCP X?

Hey guys. I'm a newbie to the boards here but I just currently purchased a Canon Rebel 1100D that shoots video in 30 fps or 25 fps and using Final Cut Pro X for editing.
I know getting the film look is shooting in 24 fps and I definitely want that same look here.
I'm working on a short film and want to know is it better to shoot video in 30 fps then convert to 24 fps OR just shoot in 25 fps and convert to 24 fps?
Any tips on what is best is cool with me. I'm a newbie, so be kind if possible!

You get a film-look with 25 or 30fps too ... ok, Mr.Jackson failed to create a film-look with 48fps - but that is another story...
Film Look:
the low frame-rate allows to create 'natural motion blurr', which is the main ingredience of 'film look'; watch any Hollywood blockbuster - any frame shows blurred areas.
why?
Because 24fps allows - based upon the 180° rule - a low shutter speed of 1/48th sec.
You know from photography: slow shutter speed = blurred.
So, set your cam to 25fps AND speed to 1/50th - probably you have to use a small aperture number, which leeds to the next problem:
(actual) Film-Look shows shallow Depth-of-Field - which asks, you learned as a photographer, for a wide open aperture...
so, how to accomplish that?

I am surprised that Apple did not build a converter into Mt. Lion.
Apple does have a converter built into Mountain Lion. It is call "Quicktime." However, in order to use this converter, you must first make sure the compression formats are playback compatible with QT. Basically, there are three levels of QT compatibility. The lowest is "Playback." These file can be played by QT but may not be conversion or edit compatible with QT. The second level is QT "Conversion" compatible. These files are playback compatible and can be converted to other compression formats using QT. "Edit" compatible media files are "Fully" compatible with QT since the can be played, converted and/or edited by QT. The main problem here is that AVI is a "legacy" file format that has not been officially supported by Microsoft for more than 11 years when it was replaced by Windows Media multimedia file/compression formats. Many of the original compression formats used in AVI files have never been transcoded for the Mac platform, use beyond system 9, or use beyond PPC platforms. In addition, some commonly used AVI codecs are proprietary or use non-standard (hybrid) profile and level combinations. In short, there is little wonder that Apple has been distancing itself from this outdated file type as it re-writes and upgrades its own QT structure to support more standardized, more scalable, more modern high definition file types and compression formats. It is really unfortunate that users continue to use this outmoded file type simply because it is freely available, easy to use, or they are simply too lazy to move on to a more modern or more efficient file types and/or compression formats.
I tested Wondershare Video Converter Ultimate for the Mac, which seems to be the "state of the art". I may be purchasing a new camera which might create a whole new set of variables. This program seems to cover all bases and is great for novices.
There are many third-party apps available if you wish to search for them. Many are even available in the App Store. Most do their job well and it is usually a matter of personal user preference as to which is best.
HandBrake seems more suited to folks with more experience and knowledge.
I mentioned Handbrake primarily because it is free and easy to use when you employ the included conversion presets options. (The TV options can normally be used for almost any situation depending on the source file and output requirements.) It is also excellent for more experienced users, but has a somewhat limited choice of output options as it does not access the user's system QT codec component configuration.

My G7X keeps turning off while shooting video..any tips?

A very nice choice of camera's that G7X is !!
A speed class of 6 or higher is reccommened to achievve the highest recording lenght in time and GB's.
Just how long before it shuts off ?
Have you formatted it properly in the camera ? Tried a different card ?

You must enable iTunes Match on the new computer. The best way to accomplish what you want to do is to create a new, empty library by launching iTunes while holding down the Option key (Shift on Windows) and choosing "new library." Do not let iTunes scan for new content, but do enable iTunes Match on the empty library. Once the scan is finished you may delete tracks from the cloud. Hello, I've only had my ipod for a few weeks now. I've finaly figured out how to rip dvds/encode them, etc. During this trial and error period I was putting all kinds of junk in my itunes library.
My question is how to remove videos from my itunes library.

I've been using a dvd ripper and video converter made by Xilisoft. After I import the movie from my pc to itunes video library and ipod, I've noticed that the audio doesn't match up with the video. Its like watching a poorly dubbed kung fu movie. Has anybody used Xilisoft software and had the same problems? If so, what did you do to recify the problem?

OK, I finally figured it out. I still don't have the clear option available. I had to double click on video, highlight, then press delete.
I'm curious why I don't have a clear option like I do in library.
Oh well, at least I can delete old files from my itunes now.

Well the only way I know how to put ANYTHING on there is ZOON and ZOON DOES NOT HAVE AN OPTION IN IT FOR EBOOKS THAT I CAN SEE.
