How to shuffle songs in library

Long ago when I downloaded and purchased songs into iTunes for my 1st Gen Nano, the songs were automatically shuffled when they played on the Nano. Some songs I liked a lot so I put multiple numbers of the same song into iTunes, one after the other before addind different songs. Now with the 6th Gen Nano I can't shuffle unless I shake which is out of the question while walking with Nano in my pocket or working out.
My question is, can I Shuffle my library in iTunes. If so how?
Thanks,
Geezerbill

If you're looking at your songs on the music page, the very first column before the song name is a check box. Uncheck any songs you don't want to be picked up in your shuffle. I think that'll do the trick.
If you don't want them on your iphone\pod, you can deselect them on your device menu under settings if you turn off "entire music library".

  • How to delete songs from library after already deleted from playlist?

I already deleted several playlists in an attempt to free up space. I later learned that you have to delete it from the library to free up space. I also later learned that if I had used alt del in the first place that would have solved this problem. Is there a way to delete the songs in the library that are no longer on any playlists now? How can I find them easily to delete or is there a way to automatically do it. I've already emptied my trash and my library is way too complicated with a lot of songs not even identified. There's no way I can go to my library to look for songs individually.
Also, if you use alt del to delete a song from a playlist and your library... if that song is in another playlist, will it also make it unavailable anymore for that other playlist, as well?
    Thanks,
    Bill

    1) Make a new folder among your playlists.
    2) Drag all your existing playlists into that folder.
    3) Create a new smart playlist with the rule "Playlist is not {name of the folder}."
    4) That smart playlist should contain all songs that aren't in any other playlists, and you can delete them (though I would make sure that everything is as you expect first).
    5) Drag your playlists out of the folder, then delete the folder.

Playlists are just pointers to songs in your library — they don't contain duplicate copies of the songs. Deleting a song from the library will delete it from all playlists.

  • ?how to move  songs from library in ext drive to new library on int drive

I am trying to set up an application called iBirdPod and am having problems because my large iTunes library is on an external drive. The developer suggests I move the bird songs I previously ripped to the ext drive to a new library on my internal drive.
I know I can create a second library by holding down the option key when I open iTunes.
The question is how to move the bird songs I have already ripped from the original library on the external drive to my new library on the internal drive and then delete them from the external drive? They will ultimately go on my iPod after they have been altered a bit by the iBirdPod application.
thanks for any help with this
    Caroline

I have been unable to get the birdPodmaker software to work (it makes some changes to the birdsongs previously ripped to the iTunes library to make them easier to use on an iPod) so the developer suggested the problem might lie in the fact that iTunes and the birdPodmaker softerware are on my iMac's internal drive, while the iTunes library is on an external drive (because the library is large and growing).
I know there are several options for having a second (or more ) ITunes library via iTunes itself, via Libera or via Doug Adams iTunes Library manager. I am just not sure what the best way is to move the actual bird songs themselves from my primary iTunes library on the external drive to a new one on the internal drive without either duplicating them or having to delete them from the external drive and then rerip them to the internal drive.
    Any help would be appreciated.

  • How To Shuffle Songs in a Playlist

    Hi --
I've searched the forum for an answer but didn't see one. Sorry if this is a repeat.
How do I make my iPod Classic shuffle the songs in a playlist? I have the Shuffle set to Songs. When the playlist is highlighted I click the Play button to start. However, if I have several songs by the same artist, the iPod plays all the songs by that artist in sequence before going on.
Is it possible to have the iPod shuffle playlist songs the way iTunes does (randomly shuffling all songs regardless of artist)?
I feel like an idiot because I can't figure this out. Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    John

As closely as I recall, go to 'Settings' to set up Shuffle, then go to your playlist and the tracks will then play in random order.

  • How do I get to 'Shuffle Songs' after picking a track?

I am just getting to grips with my new iPod Classic 160GB (replacing a Sony NW-HD5H Network Walkman that simply didn't have enough capacity for my collection). There were a few functions I liked on my Sony that I can't seem to figure out on my iPod (apologies if the answers are obvious, but I've looked through the User Guide and they didn't answer them).
I like to play my whole collection randomly, so have selected 'Shuffle Songs' in the Music menu. Likewise, from the Main Menu I've selected Settings>Shuffle>Songs so it states Shuffle Entire Music Library. However, I sometimes like to pick a particular to play (selecting it through Music>Albums menu for example), and then presumed that after playing that track it would go into Shuffle mode from all tracks on the iPod, but it just keeps randomly playing the tracks from the Album I've selected. To get it back in full Shuffle Mode I have to go back to the Main Menu and click Shuffle Songs. Is there any workround I can do so my iPod will automatically go back into full Shuffle Mode after I've chosen to play a particular track?
Secondly, if in Shuffle Mode it plays a track and I then want to play another track from the same album, is there any quick way of getting to that album, rather than having to go through the Main Menu to do Music>Albums and having to scroll through hundreds of albums to get to the one that's already being played in Shuffle Mode?
Apart from these, I'm having great fun acquanted with my iPod. My Sony looks like a bit of a dinosaur in comparison!
    Thanks in advance!

To answer your first question, that is how it works. When you go into a playlist of some sort, either one you made in iTunes or going into an Artist list, an album, etc. when you play from that list it will stay in that list. If your iPod is set up to shuffle songs, then it will shuffle just that list you are in. To the best of my knowledge, there is no way to go into a list, pick a track then have it automatically jump out of the list and start shuffling the entire library.
Unless you go to Music -> Songs which shows ALL the songs in your library and find the track from that location. Then it would shuffle the list you are in, Songs, so is a round about way to play a track you want then continue to shuffle through your entire library. But the hard part is scrolling through thousands of songs to find that one you want to start with.
As to your second question, I assume you mean if you are shuffling the entire library from "Shuffle Songs" item off the main menu, then the answer is no, you can not easily jump from a randomly playing track to a listing of the other tracks of that album. You would have to jump up to the main menu, Music -> etc.

  • How can you shuffle songs in a playlist in itunes 11?

You used to be able to create a playlist, shuffle it, then synch it to your ipod.  This was done easily with a shuffle button in the library.  In 11 that button is no longer there.  How can you do this now?

Your question is clear, but you then go on to say something completely different. I've answered your question "how can (you) shuffle songs in a Playlist in iTunes 11".
In Playlists, click on the "start playing in shuffle mode" icon (that I've ringed). And...
In this next shot (the space you need to watch), you can see the Shuffle icon (ringed in larey lime) is blue, so it's "on", and I've also clicked on the "show me what's coming up next" icon (ringed in red).  Study the list of upcoming songs. It's the Playlist we're in, but shuffled:
    Hey presto!
Now - if you actually mean something else, such as: "create the Playlist, adjust the order of the songs and then Sync it to the iPod"; then as before, you can drag songs within a Playlist to whatever order you want and Sync the Playlist - as before. I've no idea what the "button" you refer to, looked like. Can you explain?

  • HT1473 how can i get my library to copy from my i-pod shuffle to my computers i-tunes library?

How do you get a library to copy from an i-pod shuffle to the i-tune library on the computer?

If you have not done so, you may want to restart your computer.
That message (about the song file not found) means iTunes cannot locate the song file where it expects to find it.  Are you sure you can still play the song in iTunes (?), because you may get a yellow exclamation point next to the song, meaning the same thing; iTunes did not find the song file where iTunes expected to find it.
The consolidate command would not help if iTunes can't locate the files.
That might mean they were moved or deleted.  If you do a Get Info (from right-click) on one of those songs, the Info window should tell you the expected location of the song file, on the Summary tab next to Where.  Follow that path (using Windows) to see if the song file is there.

  • How to put songs in ipod shuffle

how to put songs in ipod shuffle

This document describes the ways to put music on a shuffle (and also shows the four shuffle models)
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1719
If the shuffle is the current 4th gen (or 3rd gen), here is one convenient way to do it.
Create a new playlist in your iTunes library, and put all of the songs you want on the shuffle on that playlist.  (Or you can use an existing playlist.)  Back on the shuffle's Music screen in iTunes, check the checkbox forSync Music.  Choose the option to sync Selected playlists, artists, albums, and genres.  Below that, find that playlist under Playlists and select (checkmark) it.  You can select other items on those lists if desired, including other playlists.
When you click Apply, the songs in your selection(s) sync to the shuffle.  Going forward, to update the shuffle's songs, just update that playlist in your iTunes library (add/remove songs).  The shuffle does not need to be connected.  The next time you connect the shuffle (or click Sync if already connected), iTunes automatically updates the shuffle with the same changes.

  • How do i stop my iPhone iTunes from Shuffling songs?

I cannot figure out how to stop my iPhone Music/iTunes from shuffling songs but instead to play them in order.

In the Music app, tap the screen to bring up an extra menu bar showing the current song's timeline.  In the lower right is a pair of crossed arrows -- when enabled (blue), shuffle is on, tap it to turn shuffle off (gray).
Edited to add: That's when you've got the album cover image up, if you're on the track listing, tap the upper-right corner to bring it back to cover art view.  The other two indicators/buttons on the bottom of the same bar are "repeat" (bottom left) to repeat the current track or playlist (two options), and "genius" (bottom center) to generate playlists of songs similar to the one currently playing.

  • How to make the shuffle songs mode less "random"

In the past, with previous versions of iTunes, I was able to find a settings page that would allow me to control just how "Random" shuffle mode was by asking iTunes to choose songs by the same artist, album, etc. more or less likely, and to pick higher rated songs more often. I know it is possible to do that with the "Party Shuffle" but I want to do this with any of my play lists. I HOPE the answer doesn't involve using the Genius Play List because I have a very strong dislike for that feature and have turned it off.

Why oh why have they done this!
That you for your help (and excuse me while I rant).
If only I could revert to a previous version of iTunes. There are so many funky things with iTunes 8 that make it difficult and counter intuitive. In order to do a pale imitation of what I used to be able to do I have to make a new play list and open party shuffle, and select that playlist. Grrr.

If ALL your music is on the iPod and it's ALL iTunes purchased content, you log into iTunes with your account on th enew machine and reverse sycn the music back.
If the music is from cd's and other sources (not iTunes files) then ask over at iLounge what third party solution currently works. (can't recommond it here)
I have some HUGE instructions here how to get your music off the old comptuer too:
    Recovery options:
    A: If Windows isn't booting:
You need to boot the computer from a "recovery disk or USB" that has a operating system on it and a graphical user interface to transfer files from your boot drive to a external drive.
I suggest using the Easy USB Installer to install Ubuntu 10.10 onto a 2-4 GB USB key.
    http://www.pendrivelinux.com/universal-usb-installer-easy-as-1-2-3/
    or
burn a ISO of Ubuntu 10.10 or PartedMagic to a cd-r with ImgBurn or Win 7 right click and burn
You can use Disk Utility in OS X to select the ISO and burn to cd/dvd as well.
Once you have it installed, consult this page for your BIOS boot key to hold to get into the BIOS.
    http://pcsupport.about.com/od/fixtheproblem/a/biosaccess_pc.htm
Plug the USB into the back (if possible) of the computer, connect the external drive and enter the BIOS, set the USB (or CD) as first boot and SAVE.
Boot off the USB/CD and "Try Ubuntu/Run from disk" DON'T INSTALL. (Parted Magic loads into RAM and ejects CD)
Once in, go under the menu Places > Computer and transfer your files to the external drive just like you would in Windows, drag and drop.
(If using Parted Magic double click on the Mount Drive left icon twice, use the two GUI windows to transfer files to external drive, unmount drives, log out/quit in the lower left corner menu option)
B: If the computer hardware isn't working, but the drive might still work:
You'll have to remove the power cord and manually extract the hard drive. This might result in some damage.
There is a powered IDE/SATA to USB adapter for sale online for $20 that you can take that internal hard drive and use it like a external drive to access your files from another Windows machine.
C: If your iTunes content is deleted...
It might be recoverable if it hasn't been overwritten yet by fresh data. Undelete software works by reading the 1's and 0's of the files themselves, not what the OS says.
You need to use undelete software pre-installed before the iTunes content was deleted, or while on a bootable cd/USB and a external drive to transfer the recovered files.
You can also install undelete type software on a new machine and USE STEP B above to "undelete" the files and recover them directly to the new computer.
You can't install undelete software or recover files to the same drive your attempting to recover from or it overwrites the deleted data.
D: If the hard drive doesn't work and...
The data isn't worth spending $2000-$3000 in a ATTEMPT at platter dissection recovery, then your finished
If the data on the drive was encrypted, data recovery efforts may be futile, unless it's a encypted file and you transfer it successfuly and have the password to de-crypt it.
E: If you have a "iDevice" with any content
It can be synced back into iTunes, check at iLounge what third party software works reliably now and for your version.
(Once you log into your iTunes account, you can sync ONLY iTunes purchased content back from a iDevice)
Third party software can recover just about all the items on a iDevice, regardless of it's origin. (can't recommend such software here)
F: If any of the above is too hard, or the data is of "critical importance"
Then seek professional computer or forensic level recovery services.
Get help from someone who has done this sort of thing repeatly and can almost guaranty 100% results.
There is Linux software that can "rip" all data off a iOS device if that level of attention is needed, seek a professional service.
Hope this helps in your data recovery efforts.
Please, backup your data, it's the only thing us IT professionals can't recover.

  • How to move songs from iPod to Library?

I have more songs on my iPod than in my Library. How do I move all the songs into Library? Drag and drop is not allowed.

You can't sync or drag your music back directly from an iPod to iTunes, the transfer of music is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there is a manual method of accessing the iPod's hard drive and copying songs but not playlists back to iTunes on Windows posted in this thread: MacMuse - iPod to iTunes
If you prefer something more automated then there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve the music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. Have a look at the web pages and documentation for these, they are generally quite straightforward.
