How to silence the startup sound?

My MacPro emits the startup chord, loundly, from the internal speaker. All other sounds come from the external speakers. When I get home late it's like to wake the dead if I turn on my Mac.
This did not work this way before, the startup sound played through the external speakers and I could turn them down.
Any ideas how to kill the startup sound or make it play through the external speakers?
Thanks.

Well, you know that's a funny thing, because I didn't actually intend to mute the startup chime. I just wanted it routed to the external speakers where I could control the volume properly, like the first poster. But the chime doesn't sound out of my external speakers. I don't hear it at all.
And I don't care. If my Mac fails some test, it isn't going to work right, I'll find out about it anyway. I also don't care because in 20 years of owning Macs, if there was a problem with my Mac I can't remember any of them being due to a failed self test, it was usually a hard disk failure or something on the motherboard while I still got the normal startup chime. The power on self test does not, for example, tell PowerBook G4 owners about the widespread problem that their lower RAM slot has failed. I just haven't found the chime to be useful, while many users find it to be extremely annoying. Apple could just flash the front panel LED differently.
The only time I've ever heard the failed self test tones is when I've played them back from some web page or utility that tells you what they mean.

I was going to suggest doing the Following from the Link I added below to see if Silence Mode would silence the power up but on my Droid Maxx it does not the start up Droid is still present so I'm not really sure there is an option to silence it.
The First Link is for the ( Ultra Droid Maxx and Mini)  the Second Link is for the Droid Turbo. the instructions for the two style of phones are the same..  as far as I could tell

    Hi and welcome to Discussions,
Apple has removed that with the Intel-based Macs.

How do I mute the startup sound on my imac

The start up sound is there for specific reasons, for example if you do a Safe Boot or PRAM reset  you need the start up sound to do those key functions. I would recommend against masking it and follow Apple's suggestions.  Please read your owners manual, where Apple states:
    Putting Your iMac to Sleep
If you‘ll be away from your iMac for less than a few days, put it to sleep. When your iMac is in sleep, its screen is dark. You can quickly wake your iMac and bypass the startup process.
This means don't turn it off, my iMac is about 5 years old now. The only time it's restarted is when I'm doing updates, it has reliably that way and has never given me any problems. In short, let it sleep when it's not being used.

You don't. You may find some third-party software that will, however. Try Auto Mute.
    Alternatively, you can try this:
I think this is the best and simplest solution. Open a Terminal window and type (or copy/paste) the following to turn down the startup noise:
         sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume="%00"
    Press RETURN.
And to restore it to the original value type:
         sudo nvram -d SystemAudioVolume
    Press RETURN.
    That's all folks.

    Three things
1.How do I enable the startup sound on Mac OS 10.2.8(Jaguar)
I am using an iMac G4
I like the startup chime of mac osx but it doesn't seem to be chiming when I turn the computer on.
    2. How do I get safari+flash player  on 10.2.8
    3. How do I update the computer (e.g. Windows update kind off thing)
    Please help.
    Cheers,

    1. Make sure the volume is on. Check that the machine makes other sounds.
    2. Here is a link for Safari for a Mac 10.2.8
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2964
Though I'd be surprised if it would be very useful. Things have changed a lot on the internet since that came out. An old version of Firefox might be better. I don't know where you would get an old version of flash. It is an Adobe product.
    3. There are no further updates to  Jaguar 10.2 than you already have, 10.2.8 that was the last update.

Look for Startup Sound on Macupdate.com
You really shouldn't turn it off, as if there is a error you won't be able to hear the beep codes.
However you can lower the volume.

  • Won't turn on past the startup sound

    Hello,
I'm a student studying abroad right now in Senegal, part of Sub-saharan Africa (which might help for later on).
My iBook won't turn on past the startup apple noise (the daaaaauummm). When I press the power button it makes that noise, along with a minimal amount of internal processor noise, and then nothing past that. The internal noise basically stops, and nothing comes up on the monitor. This problem started yesterday--I was using my computer and then the screen started to go fuzzy and get static and then it just went blank. Although I said that I don't get anything past the startup noise, I think my computer is still on (even though it isn't doing anything) because if I want to get the startup noise again I have to force shutdown the computer (hold down the power button for 10 seconds). Furthermore, when I do get the startup noise, the lighted ring around where the power adapter plugs in goes from orange to yellow and stays yellow for a bit. However, no light illuminates around the power button on the computer.
At first I thought maybe there was a problem with my monitor. I followed two of Apple's troubleshooting steps, resetting my parameter RAM (I think holding control command P and R) as well as resetting my computer's PMU (shift control option and power button) and for both of those, I managed to actually get something on my screen--the apple with the gear around it popped up and stayed there, but then after about 3 seconds it got the same staticky and lines and then went black again. When I tried to replicate this by doing the exact same thing (for both solutions) I was not able to get past the startup sound (ie the screen stayed blank) and it was back to square one.
Basically, I'm stumped. There are power cuts here in Senegal, along with subsequent power surges when the power comes back on, which lead my Dad to think that maybe my motherboard got fried. However, there is a power adapter on the cord which should block against that. Furthermore, that won't explain why the laptop was working right before it fritzed out on me, even though it was not plugged in. I'm thinking that maybe there might be a bug in my computer (like a physical one that crawled in). I am thinking this because there are bugs that crawl around my computer and under my keys (it's not as gross as it sounds--well actually I guess it is...) and furthermore I was out of town this past weekend so my computer was sitting idly in my room. Could it be that a bug actually made it deeper into my computer? But also, that still wouldn't explain why I was able to make it work on Monday.
I will be here in Senegal for 3 more weeks, but I would like to use my computer before then. Is there anything I can try to fix myself here, or will I have to wait until I get back to the states. Is there anyway for me to al least get some of the stuff off of my harddrive--that's all I really care about? Obviously, there isn't an apple store here in Dakar, Senegal, for me to take it to--although there are a few computer places but it seems like Apples aren't too popular here, and so I'm not sure how effective/knowledgeable they'd be with a Mac. Plus I'd have to explain all of this in French, which wouldn't necessarily be the easiest thing.
    Thank you sooo much,
    Chris
And for my operating system, I'm not sure if I clicked the right one, but I know I'm on one of the newer ones (not the newest though)

Hi, Chris. Welcome to Apple Discussions.
It sounds like you may be having logic board problems. Enough Dual USB G3 iBooks suffered from this problem that Apple began the iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program in January of 2004. Check out the FAQ page and if the symptoms look familiar, give Apple a call.
Since it is past the three-year time limit, try calling and ask for Customer Relations (NOT Customer Service--they can't help you) and ask them to please make an exception to the three-year limit in your case.
You may want to consider trying the shim fix suggested by John Sawyer elsewhere here in the Displays Forum:
[Y]ou can often fix this yourself by removing the iBook's bottom housing, and placing a shim of any sort, about 1mm to 1.5mm thick, onto the raised square on the bottom shield. I use a Scotch mounting square--you can get them in hardware stores and many grocery stores. When you reinstall the bottom case, it will press against this shim, which will press against the graphics chip, and may allow the chip to come into better contact with the logic board.

Instructions for removing the lower case:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/50.5.0.html
Once you get it fixed, try never to pick it up by the left front corner alone. Rumor has it that can contribute to logic board failure when the case flexes, causing the graphics chip to come loose from the logic board. If you're picking it up in your left hand (as I often do mine), pick it up in the center under the trackpad.
Good luck. Let us know how things go.

  • My computer suddenly refuse to start. When I turn it on it gives the startup sound but the screen is grey and after a while a little folder icon with a question mark inside turns up. It doesn't blink. What to do? Nothing happens if I try to start up from

As I say my computer, a mac mini refuse to start. When I turn it on it gives the startup sound and the screen turns grey and stay that way for a long time. And in the end a small folder icon with a question mark inside (it doesn't blink) turns up in the middle of the screen.
I have tried to start up from the installation CD holding down the C key on the keyboard. Same result. I have tried different key combinations while starting up. No result or rather same result. Nothing. Is the computer suddenly dead?
I was about to buy a new computer but I need access to my data on this one (I write this on an iPad) but hven't yet found a way.
    Anybody have any good advice?
I thought it was a software problem, that the computer couldn't find the startup software or something and maybe it is, but I am beginning to fear that it could be a hardware problem.

You need to re install OSX. If you have the dmg file downloaded via torrentz this is how you can create a bootable external HD or Flash drive (8 GB+)

  • How to deactivate the start sound

how can i deactivate or change the start noisy sound ???

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
I do not recommend you to do it because that's the way your Mac tells you if there's a hardware issue > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5860?viewlocale=en_US
Anyway, if you still want to disable the startup sound, you have two options:
Turn off the speakers before shutting down your computer.
Use an application like StartupNinja to do it (this app does not work with the iMac).
Use Terminal commands to disable the startup sound > http://osxdaily.com/2012/11/04/disable-mac-boot-chime/

  • How to mute/delete startup sound in Mountain Lion?

Is there a way to shut off/mute the startup sound in Mountain Lion without simply turning down all sounds?  For years I have used a third party pref pane called startup sound, but it has not been updated for OS 10.8.  Thanks.

    1. Login as administrator and open Terminal
    2. Create scriptfile for muting
    sudo nano /path/to/mute-on.sh
    3. Enter this as content, when done press Ctrl+O to save and Ctrl+X to exit:
    #!/bin/bash
osascript -e 'set volume with output muted'
    4. Create scriptfile for unmuting
    sudo nano /path/to/mute-off.sh
    5. Enter this as content, when done press Ctrl+O to save and Ctrl+X to exit:
    #!/bin/bash
osascript -e 'set volume without output muted'
    6. Make both files executable:
    sudo chmod u+x /path/to/mute-on.sh
    sudo chmod u+x /path/to/mute-off.sh
    7. Check if any hooks already exist (these will be overwritten, so make sure it is OK for you)
    sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook
    sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LogoutHook
    8. Add hooks for muting
sudo defaults write com.apple.loginwindow LogoutHook /path/to/mute-on.sh
sudo defaults write com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook /path/to/mute-off.sh

I removed the startup sound from GNOME.
I don't even remember if it did work, but I press the remove button a bit too quickly and there is no confirmation box.
Could you launch gnome-session-properties and tell me the command line for the GNOME startup sound please?

Play better... just kidding.  Set an appropriate quantize value for all the regions in the inspector window. If you are doing live playing and need to synch to that it is MUCH more complicated. If you're new at this it might actually be easier to re-play it.
