How to simply play one mp3 at a time without a playlist or duplicate file creation

What's always baffled me about Itunes is the overkill factor for we who are media professionals and simply need
to be able to select and playback an audio file - without the proprietary architecture of the whole "Playlist" format...
and, as long as we're at it, without automatically having a duplicate of whatever is being played, created and placed
in a new folder somewhere.
"Back in the day..."  I could take SoundJam - (actually the predecessor app that Itunes was originally based upon)
--which i still regularly use for easy conversion of .aifs to .mp3s --  and select/play any number of mp3s located in a
single file folder at random.  No "playlist" was created or needed -  and it didn't/doesn't dupe a copy of the file.
Can i in any way scale down or customize Itunes in a way that i can just play each mp3 in a given folder by selecting
it 'directly' and not have to have it generate a playlist "copy" -  My use for Itunes as far as commercial production is
for quick review/play of sound elements, spots (commercials) audio clips, etc. For this I'm not looking to "order" or
organize anything, just simply start/stop an audio cut and move to another.
Alternately, any suggestions on simpler practical alternative 3rd party apps... Stuff like "Vox" comes kinda close but
i still have to drag and drop the icon of the audio file onto the app's icon to initiate play.  Still, at least it doesn't force
me into a Playlist or generate a copy just by selecting and playing the cut.
If this makes sense to anyone I'd really appreciate any ideas,
Thanks!

In a Finder window, select a song and press the Space bar.

  • How do I play one album at a time?

I want to play one album at a time by artists for whom I have multiple albums. I have the newest generation ipod touch. One album at a time used to be the default mode, but with the new operating system iOS7, this is no longer the case.  Here's an example - I want to play the Pixies "Surfer Rosa," but when i click on the first song, it says it's playing 1 of 58 songs continuously - I want it to stop playing after "Surfer Rosa," I want it to say it's playing 1 of 14 songs.  Is there a simple fix for this?  Something in general settings or music settings that I have overlooked?
I have found one way to play just one album, but it seems a bit complicated for what should be a simple fix.  I click on the first song on Surfer Rosa, then click on the 3 dot 3 line icon in the upper right corner, then click on another song, then back to the first song, then click done, and now it says it's playing 1 of 14 songs.  It's nice to have found this way around the issue, but, it's a lot of steps for something that used to be the default mode.

Do you really mean upload as in transferring the files to another computer somewhere, or do you mean you ripped as in ripping a CD to copy the music to your computer?
Select the tracks you want to edit, Get Info on them, then enter the desired album name.

  • How do I play one album at a time by an artist?

I have the newest generation ipod touch and i just downloaded the new iOS7.  I would like to play one album at a time by an artist for whom i have multiple albums, but the new design won't let me do it (easily that is).  For example, if I want to play "Surfer Rosa" by the Pixies, I tap on the first song and it show it is 1 or 58 songs, meaning it will continuously play through all the albums.  I want it to say 1 of 14 so it will stop playing after "Surfer Rosa" is done.  I've checked in general settings and music settings and I can't find anything to fix the issue.  Am I missing something?
I have found one way to play one album at a time.  I click on the first song in the album, then tap the "3 dot 3 line" icon on the right, click on another song in the album, then click on the first song again, tap "done" and then it shows that I am playing 1 of 14 songs.  This seems like an elaborate fix for something as simple as wanting to play one album at a time.

Turn on *shuffle songs* and then start the Podcast episode you want. The display should say "1 of 1" because all Podcasts are set to *Skip on shuffle* so the one you're playing is the only option for the iPod.

  • How do I play one song at a time in Music on iPad

First I DO NOT HAVE THE LITTLE SHUFFLE SYMBOL AND THE SHUFFLE IS NOT SELECTED in Songs on MY IPAD.  I have downloaded music from iTunes to my iPad in the Apple Music icon but all the songs seem to bunch together. I want to play one song at a time and NOT HAVE THE REST START PLAYING.

  • In 7.0 How do I add one CD at a time without all Cds being taken out?

I have upgraded to 7.0 and wanted to add a new CD, I used to find that when itunes was on it would upload a CD into my Library and I would drag and drop into my ipod section, easy.
Now I don't see the new CD, so I looked at the new sync part for music, I am no expert so I ticked Sync music and then ticked all songs and music and the whole lot of my music just went.
Luckily I had a backup of all my ipod stuf and am now adding it, don't know if it will all go in, will have to see.
My point is, if you want to add some CDs to your ipod, how do you do it without it taking everything out, I have nearly 9,000 songs so if anyone can help or give me a place to find out about this I will be very happy.
BTW does this happen in my video section too, I am afraid to try??
    Many thanks, Chrisie.

You can set your iPod for manually managing
your music. It is an option in the iPod screen. Or
    search the on-line help.
The alternative is that the iPod simply mirrors
whatever is in iTunes. That means it removes things
from the iPod if you remove them from your computer.

Hi Michael, there is no option in the music screen to manually manage my music, believe me I have been looking at this for 2 days now.
I have searched online for help and also not found anything, I cant understand why Apple puts something new on and then gives no instuctions on how to use it.
I went into thier Tutoral section and they are still showing you how to put CDs in the old way.
    Anyway, thanks for your help.

  • How To Re-Compile ONE Component in Real-Time Without CF Restart?

    Is there a way?
I've seen tricks for restarting the application, but I suspect this still kills all active sessions, and we have quite a few going on.
I just have one CFC I need to recompile to get some changes in place, but I don't want to upset the entire apple cart.
    Is there a way?
    RLS

I like this idea and will give it a shot next time for sure. It would be so nice to find a way to do that without having to restart CF in Production to make a hotfix.
I will review those settings to see what the impact might be.  I wouldn't want to affect long-term efficiency for short-term occasional satisfaction.
BKBK, thank you very much for your help and suggestions!

  • My iPod only plays one song at a time

I don't store any music on my iPod - only music videos. They all play fine, and they're stored as properly tagged music video files under Menu->Videos->Music Videos. After I first synced them from my PC, I noticed that they also all appear under Menu->Music as songs. I can play them all just fine, either by selecting one through Menu->Videos (in which case it plays as a video) or by selecting one though Menu->Music, in which case it plays as a regular song with a little picture displayed instead of the video.
    So far, so good.
The only problem is, I can only play one song at a time. I navigate through the menu, select either a song or a video, and the iPod will play that just fine, get to the end, and then bring up the menu again.
How can I get it to play the one I select, and then just play other random songs? It makes no difference whether or not 'shuffle' is selected, it still only plays one then stops. Also, putting the songs in a playlist doesn't seem to make any difference.
    Any advice gratefully received.

Are you sure you don't have Shuffle on? There are a couple of ways to Shuffle on a 5th Gen. iPod. You can't simply choose Shuffle Songs from the Main Menu and shuffle the entire library...or you can go to Settings > Shuffle and choose Songs or Albums and apply that to any playlist you select. The behavior you describe is what happens when Shuffle is turned on and items are set to Skip When Shuffling (an option found on the tracks under Get Info). If Shuffle is on, you should see the little green crossed arrows in the upper right of the iPod window.

  • Only Plays One Song at a Time ???

I'm trying to listen to albums in my library but iTunes will only play one song at a time, very annoying to have to down arrow and click play after every song. How can I make iTunes play through my library without stopping?
I'm using iTunes 10.1 (54) and YES all the songs are checked.
    Thanks~

    <SOLVED>
I disabled the Ping drop-down from the Terminal with:
defaults write com.apple.iTunes hide-ping-dropdown -bool TRUE
and viola! Now my library plays without stopping after just one song. Not sure why this fixed my problem but it did? I guess it's just another reason to get rid of Ping!

  • ITunes 8.0 only Plays One Song at a Time, then Stops! AARGH!

Someone, please help. I have tried everything I can think of, to no avail.
For some reason, when I play a song in my Music Library on my laptop iTunes 8.0, it stops playing after each song. When the song ends, iTunes stops; it does not move to the next song in my library, it just stops. I have to click on the next song to play that song, and when that song is done it stops.
I have tried creating Music Playlists, does not help. I have tried checking and unchecking the Repeat and Shuffle options, still nothing.
This does not happen on my iPods, only when I play songs in my Music Library on iTunes from my laptop.
If you have any suggestions for a solution, please tell me. I am beyond frustrated having to click on the next song every time.

I have the same problem with iTunes only playing one track at a time. It didn't use to be this way ... and seems to have developed after one of the recent updates (late December 2008).
I did, however, find that the problem was "solved" by checkmarking all the tracks that I expect to hear played. However, this won't work for me because ... as it has always been in the past ... I use these check boxes to tell iTunes which tracks to synchronize to my iPod. Since my desktop library is many times larger than can be loaded onto my iPod, I obviously cannot check all of the tracks.
Since when did these check marks become **ALSO** a signal to tell iTunes what tracks to play continuously on iTunes?!?
Previously, I have **ONLY** used these check-marks to signal to iTunes the tracks that should be synchronized to my iPod.
If the foregoing advice (check-marking all songs to be played continuously on **iTunes** ... then it would appear that the programmers have introduced a conflict of functions in the iTunes user interface.
The check-mark system is a simple and intuitive method to select which tracks to synchronize to the iPod ... it is not at all intuitive that you would be expected to check these **SAME** check-boxes to play tracks on the iTunes desktop.
Generally, when listening to music at home on iTunes, I prefer to listen to albums as published from the first track to the last track. Occasionally, I may wish to shuffle tracks within an album or within a genre.
However, when on the go, I sometimes shuffle music entirely. In any event, I cannot possibly download my entire library onto my iPod because of memory limitations.
In conclusion, I do not wish to tamper with my check-marks ... I know, at any time, how much memory is currently in use on my iPod and so can add and/or delete check-boxes to adjust the tracks from my iTunes main library that are played on my iPod.
Of course, then, I am massively frustrated that I cannot listen to albums continuously without messing-up my iPod library selections.
This was never a problem before ... why has this behavior changed?
This could, of course be resolved if the Apple development team added a command "Continuous Play" [On] or [Off] ... say under the [Controls] menu, logically placed above the "Shuffle" menu item.
    Comments?
Does anyone on the Apple iTunes development team monitor this discussion?

  • ITunes will only play one song at a time, I can't select an album or artist and have it keep playing the next song.

I just can't figure out how to keep itunes going.  It plays one song at a time and will not go on to the next.  Do I need to change a setting or something?

At a guess you've somehow managed to uncheck the entire library. Select the Songs view, the CTRL+click an empty checkbox. All boxes should become checked. If you don't see the checkboxes use Edit > Preferences to enable them.

  • In iTunes, is there any way to play one song at at time and have the song stop at its end.  I want to play guitar with a track and have that track stop playing rather than going to the next song.

I want to play a single song in iTunes on my ipad and have the track stop when the song finishes, rather than itunes playing the next track.  I play guitar with the track and need iTunes to stop at the end of the song.
I have worked around this issue by creating a separate play list for each song, then inserting the song into the play list.  I would like to find a more straight forward solution that would eliminate this extra step.  On my PC, I use QuickTime to bring up an individual song and then can play one track at a time.
    Thanks!

On the IPod if the shuffle icon is colored blue it is ON, if it is colored white it is OFF. This control is global, if it is ON any album or list will be shuffled.

My iTunes only plays one song at a time. I've tried changing the format (ie repeat playlist, repeat song etc etc) but nothing seems to work. Can anyone help?

Do the songs have check marks against them? If not iTunes will only play one song at a time.
To check mark them all quickly go to edit/select all, then right click on the songs and select "check selection".

How do I get it to just play through all the podcasts that I've downloaded just like my 1st gen?
Group and order your podcasts to a playlist. Then play them from the playlist.

  • Itunes plays one song at a time on PC

I must have a toggle checked somewhere, but my desktop will only play one song at a time, then stop. My laptop plays right down the list, from where I begin until I stop the playback. Help!

That is the way it behaves when boxes are unchecked. Just recheck them. The easiest way is to hold the CTRL key and click any one of the check boxes. That will recheck all the boxes in that view.
