How to sort files in finder

I don't want my files to sort by title or kind or any of the given options.  can I change it?

If I understand your question correctly you're limited to the sorts that are built into finder. It is not possible to add any to it.
What are you wanting to sort on? Perhaps you are overlooking it.

  • HT2470 How to sort files in finder

Is there any way to sort files in my finder first by kind (folders, pdfs, jpegs, docxs, etc.) and then by name?  Right now I can only sort by one or the other.  If I sort by kind, the files are grouped according to kind, but the names are mixed up.  If I sort by name, all file types and folders are sorted according to name.  I like the column view because it helps me see the directory structure easily.  I hope that doesn't have any influence on what I'm trying to do.

Choose View > Arrange By > Kind to group by Kind. Then choose Option-View > Sort By > Name to sort within the Arrange-By groups.

  • Sort files in Finder column view for the current folder only?

    Hi,
I don't really understand how finder sort settings work, even after using OS X since it first came out. Maybe someone can give me a hand.
I'm trying to sort files inside one specific folder according to their name decending. In general I have arranged them by label and sorted by file name ascending. Every time I try to use the settings in the "display options" (cmd+J), this applies also to several other folders. Even if I right-click on that particular folder to enter the settings.
Isn't it possible to apply different sort/arrange options to individual folders?
    p.

For column view, there is only one arrange/sort, no matter where you are in the hierarchy. It is based on what the arrange/sort was set on the original folder opened.
In the View Options, the Brows by ??? view checkbox controls what happens when you open a folder from that view. If it is set, then the folder opens in the same view as the enclosing folder. If unchecked, and you have set a view on a folder, that folder will open in the desired view.
Again, this does not apply in column view. Column view has only one arrange/sort for the entire hierarchy.

  • How to sort file list by time

I have saved many PDF files from my mails - when I want to open (Adobe Reader on Samsung tablet) the file last saved I have no possibility find it simply by sorting file list by time - (list is fixed by name only) - how to change list order?.

Sorting by time could be based on documents'
    (a) Date/Time created
    (b) Date/Time modified
    (c) Date/Time last opened / accessed
Adobe Reader for Android shows (c) in Recents.
(Click the image above to enlarge)
The last opened PDF document appears at the top.  Please note that it is not customizable - meaning that you (as a user) cannot change the sorting criteria.

  • How to sort files and folders like Windows

I don't know if this is specific to Arch or every other Linux distro but one thing that really bugs me in Arch is how files and folders are sorted. I use Windows as my main OS (don't start on that please) and I have one folder properly organized exactly as I want it and I like it how Windows sorts this. I access that same folder from my Arch installation, the problem is that the sorting is different and it gets on my nerves lol...

How can I get Arch/Linux to sort exactly the same as Windows?

Ah, no. The way they are doing it is nonsensical and not good practice for a unix style system. Having said that, some solutions have already been offered in this thread.
While you are free to continue to ask others to help you achieve your aims, it may be more convenient for you to adapt to a structure that is displayed the same way under all systems (just to avoid frustration - not saying you _should_ do it ).
I really don't care if it's nonsensical, I use Windows 95% of the time or more, it's my main OS, I'm used to it and I like it. Why should I care if it's not a good practice for a unix style system? I just want things to behave the way I like and for a free system like Linux where it doesn't even compare to Windows in terms of freedom in what I can do with it and configure the way I like, it sure is hard to change the way folders/files are sorted...
It sucks that there isn't a proper solution but I'm not going to adapt anything, that would be nonsensical... But if I have to, I can live with the fact that there isn't a good solution and leave it as it is

  • Sort files in Finder Column View?

Like to sort files by date in column view, is this possible? I know you can do it in List view, but can't seem to do this in column view. It would have to be folder specific, as the upper level (which are folders of folders) should be alphabetical, then the folder with files I'd like to sort by date created. Now, all are presented in alphabetical order, and then I have to scroll down to get to them.
    Thanks!

Nope, can't be done in Finder column view - alphabetical is the only option.

  • Sorting Files in Finder eg. Artists, Album etc.

Hi, is there an option where i can arrange my files by artists or albums like in windows? I'd like to browse my music files easily without using itunes as im only editing the metadata.
    In Windows -
    Choosing sorting options: http://img.technospot.net/group-by-more-options.gif
    Into: http://s3.amazonaws.com/satisfaction-production/s3images/21365/Picture_7inline.png
I've found an app called FileBrowse that sorts files in special folders? but it just doesn't makes sense to pay for such a function.
    Help will be most appreciated.

If I'm reading your description correctly, this is exactly the same setup I use. I use a directory structure like this: genre/artist/album/tracks. Anything whose metadata and/or filenames I haven't fixed yet goes into a temp folder until I'm ready to process it. I then fix the folder and filenames, and move the item from the temp folder into its permanent location before I add it to iTunes. (Obviously, I don't let iTunes manage my collection, but do it manually myself.) You can change the metadata all you want and iTunes will still find the referenced files as long as you don't change the directory names or the filenames. If I want to move a directory or change the filenames for some reason, I just remove it from iTunes first and then add it again after I'm done making changes. Finder doesn't really enter into it, since it doesn't display metadata. What it comes down to is that iTunes doesn't care much about filenames as long as it knows where the file is, and Finder doesn't care about metadata.

  • Sorting files in Finder Window A-Z instead of Z-A

My issue arises when I access Finder through an app (for example, when I'm adding a file to my iTunes library). The files in the Finder window are being sorted Z-A instead of A-Z. I think I might have accidentally hit a shortcut to sort Z-A, and I can't figure out how to toggle it back. It's a small thing, but it's driving me crazy. I've tried switching between all the different viewing options, and that doesn't work. Anyone know what to do here?

    Good Morning V.A.L.I.S.
Thanks for the question.  I'll include some information about the Finder application below.  What I usually do is select a folder like Documents or Music and change the view to List view.  At the top of each column is a grey "header."  The first one you should see is Name.  Click on Name and your files will be sorted in order by the file name.  A ^ symbol beside the column heading indicates the files are in ascending ( A - Z ) order.  Click on the word Name again, and the sorting will toggle to descending order (Z - A).  Does that make sense?
Mac Basics: The Finder organizes all of your files - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201732
    List View
Choose View > as List to see the items in a consecutive order. You can change the sort order of the list by clicking the headers (Name, Documents, Kind, Date) at the top of the list view. Click the same header a second time to switch between ascending and descending order.
If an item is within a folder, you can click the triangle next to the folder name to see any items stored within that folder.
    Have a great day!

  • How to sort files in a PDF binder by date4

I created a portfolio for my paycheck stubs
I would like them sorted by date, in reverse, meaning the latest date appears first
I cannot drag them into the order I want. Why can I not drag files?
I tried renaming all the files with numbers so they appear in sequence (like an index)
But I now can't remember how I got them to sort.

Well, there is also JNI to do a directory listing to a file and then read that. That said, last modified is possibly more appropriate as it tells you last time a file was changed, not just raw age.

  • How to sort files on my mac automatically?

I have a Macbook Pro which i installed a second hard drive in for media files. Every time I turn my Macbook off the files unsort themselves in each folder. So every time I'm turn it on have to press clean up by Name, Size etc. I know its not a big job, its just more irritating than anything. It doesn't happen on the SSD boot from just the hard drive. How can I stop this, if i can?

Well, icon view only offers one choice at a time. Open the folder, CMD+J, set arrange by to name, and it should hold the next time you open the folder.

  • Sorting files when combining pdfs?

Ok, I'm not quite sure how adobe sorts files when combining pdfs, but it seems to be somehow different from MS XP.  Anyway, what I want to do is combine a bunch of pdfs together which are labelled A 1, A 2, A 3... However, I'm finding that when sorting them by name in adobe to combine them in the right order that the 1's, 2's, and 3's get grouped together, where they are then not sorted numerically.  For instance A 2 gets sorted with A 20 and A 200.  Even when I use MS XP to rename (e.g. A (1), A (2)) or use Adobe to extract files from a pdf the files are named in such a way that this always happens.  Anyway to get around this without manually sorting the files?
A better example of what happens:
    A 1
    A 10
    A 11
    A 12
    A 13
    A 14
    A 15
    A 16
    A 17
    A 18
    A 19
    A 100
    A 2
    A 20
    A 21
    A 22
    A 23
    A 24
    A 25
and so on and so forth... where I would like
    A 1
    A 2
    A 3
    A 4
    A 5...

Looks like a lexicographic ("dictionary" or "telephone book,") order and not numeric order. You could add leading zeros to have all the file names have the same length.

  • How to sort Data in XML template (rtf) file?

Hi, I have an oracle 11i custom report (rdf) with an xml output to a PDF. There is a formula column in the report. Now I need the data to be sorted on this formula column. As we cannot sort on formula column, i have decided to find a way to sort it in the data in the XML template. But I don't really know how to sort and also where to specify the sort tag in the rtf file. I appreciate your response.

    Hi
As long as you don't have your ^field commands grouped inside a ^group the order in the .dat file is not important. Your last command
    ^field BG_DOC_LN__LN_AM
    246624.12
should populate field BG_DOC_LN_AM wherever you place it on your form. Obviously you need to name the fields according to your ^field commands and not just use tab (move to next field).
Shout if this was not what you are asking.
