Target Display Mode: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
with a mini display to mini display cable. Attach it to the Thunderbolt port on your MBP and to the mini display port on your iMac.
    How do I enable TDM?
Make sure both computers are turned on and awake.
Connect a male-to-male Mini DisplayPort or ThunderBolt cable to each computer.
Press Command-F2 on the keyboard of the iMac being used as a display to enable TDM.
Note: In Keyboard System Preferences, if the checkbox is enabled for "Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard functions keys," the key combination changes to Command-Fn-F2.

  • Negotiated Link Speed on MacBook Pro mid-2009 with Kingston SSDNow v300

    Hi,
I have a mid-2009 MacBook Pro (13") with Kingston SSDNow v300 SSD drive with Mavericks OS X installed.
I've noticed from different forums that many users have the same problem that I have: SSD drive's Negotiated Link Speed is only 1,5 Gbps, although MacBook Pro mid-2009 should support 3 Gbps speed.
My system has EFI 1.7 firmware update (MBP55.00AC.B03) installed in and System Info says that 3 Gbps Link Speed should be possible:
    NVidia MCP79 AHCI:
      Vendor:    NVidia
      Product:    MCP79 AHCI
      Link Speed:    3 Gigabit
      Negotiated Link Speed:    1.5 Gigabit
      Physical Interconnect:    SATA
      Description:    AHCI Version 1.20 Supported
Many users have tried to reset NVRAM and SMC and I have also done these steps, but with not any improvement.
Some users have mentioned that MacBook Pro mid-2009 has a poor SATA ACHI chipset (NVidia MCP79) and SATA III SSD drives won't work on SATA II speed unless SSD drive is forced to work on SATA II speed by firmware update or by some tweaking tool. Is there this kind of tool available for Kingston SSDNow v300?
One user says that he got 3 Gbps Negotiated Link Speed on Mountain Lion, but after installing Mavericks, speed dropped to 1,5 Gbps (https://discussions.apple.com/message/23549859#23549859).
So, is there any way to get Negotiated Link Speed to work on 3 Gbps on Kingston SSDNow v300 with MacBook Pro mid-2009 (for example by installing an older version of Mac OS X) or do I have to buy a new SSD drive from another manufacturer to get 3 Gbps Negotiated Link Speed to work on my machine?
If the last option (to buy a new SSD drive) is the only option, would it be wise to look for an older model, a SATA II drive, (maybe OCZ Vertex 2) to get 3 Gbps speed?
    Thanks!

    Hi
I was just as frustated as you after installing the Kingston v300.  I mean it's a solidly built drive with the reliability of kingston (I've been using their RAM for years and years in my desktop PC without problems).  Unfortunately, for a the last 3 months I had it in my 2009 unibody white macbook, it was stuck at link speed 1.5.
I've been searching in forums since then without any solution.  Even the update for bios is not available for my model.
I just tried the SMC reset after reading the blog.
    http://thenextweb.com/lifehacks/2010/12/04/how-when-why-to-reset-the-pram-smc-on -your-mac/#!w3XEY
On reboot, everything seemed faster, so I checked the negotiated link speed and it was at 3 instead of 1.5!  Yay!  Then I checked the disk transfer speed on Blackmagic Disk speed test and it roughly doubled from 138 to 260MB/s.  Now, I'm not going to shutdown or restart...
I hope this post is useful for people like me stuck at 1.5 Gbps speed.  Good luck

  • How to make a MacBook Pro (mid 2009) work properly with a 3M Streaming projector?

Ok, so I have a MacBook Pro (mid 2009), a 3M Streaming projector and very annoying problem.
When I connect my MacBook Pro with a Mini Displayport to HDMI adapter to the 3M projector, I get a pink tint, like a filter over the image, it’s very frustrating.
This are the tests I’ve done:
    1. I tried the adaptor and the projector on a different (more recent) Mac -> It worked fine.
    2. I tried connecting my MacBook Pro to a different not HDMI but VGA projector -> It worked fine.
    3. I used some Terminal code I found on the web to force the Mac to send RGB signal, don’t know if that has anything to do with it, but I tried anyway -> Didn’t work
So I’m confused, it’s not the physical port of my MacBook cause it worked fine with a VGA projector, It’s no the 3M projector and it’s not the Mini Displayport to HDMI adaptor cause it worked fine on a different Mac.
    So what is it?
I’m totally desperate, I haven’t been able to solve this problem, so if you guys can help me you will be my heroes.
    Thanks.
    – 13" MacBook Pro (mid 2009) runing Mavericks.
    – 3M Streaming projector Powered by Roku.

Yes as Clinton says this is correct.
I've used a Sata to USB connector which is only a few pounds instead of an enclosure for the clone, but then I wasn't keeping mt old HDD. But that's an option if you don't need it.
I also use Carbon copy cloner as this will clone your recovery partition as well. Apples disk utility will also clone drives but I'm not sure that it copy's the recovery partition.
I highly redomend my Samsung 840 pro 256Gb - it's about the fastest drive you'll get (nearly) but is backed by Samsung's unrivaled SSD reliability and 5 year warranty. I've also used an 840 basic model on an older macbook and was equally pleased.
Crucial's drives are reliable mac friendly drives but are somewhat slower on the write speeds vs the 840 Pro.
I'd avoid OCZ drives due to so many failures across their range although they do have great reviews and some models just edge the Pro on speed although it's fairly negligible.
As Clinton says, avoid the Samsung Evo drive. I wanted to buy this drive as it is a great drive - but there are many users that have had compatibility issues with it when installed in a Mac. This may rectified on a future firmware update possibly, but until it's proven I would avoid it for now.

My computer is 4 years old and it has started to freeze alot. Also I am unable to connect to internet via ethernet cable. Any tips on how to speed up the computer and prevent freezes?

When you next have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Scroll back in the log to the time you noted above. Select any messages timestamped from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first. Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

  • Macbook Pro keyboard and track pad freezes after a day or two of using bluetooth Magic Mouse

The first time this happened I thought my 3 y/old 17" Macbook Pro had died. The mouse cursor had frozen to the top left of the screen and the keyboard was also frozen and no matter what I did it didnt unfreeze. Even restarting. I searched extensively online and the only solution offered was to re install the system software.
The next day I took it into work, opened it ip there and the cursor and keyboard was working again.
This led me to believe there was a conflict with my recently purchased Magic Mouse and/or bluetooth.  Even though I had been using the mouse for well over 3 weeks with no problem.
I resumed using the Magic Mouse with the computer for another week and then the keyboard/trackpad froze again. The Magic Mouse remained active.  This time, I took the batteries out of the mouse and took the computer downstairs. After a couple of hours everything is working fine again.
Has anyone had this experience and knows how to fix? Or am I resigned to using a wired mouse?

I have never encountered anything similar. However, try resetting the PRAM and SMC.

  • Macbook pro retina and Fullscreen mode freeze

    Hi
I cant get fullscreen playing in FCP 7 on Macbook pro retina mid 2012 running 10.8.3mountain lion
It wil show only a stil image and not play the video live.
This happens on the macbook, and on external monitor, in all display settings available in fcp7. It worked some months ago thou... may there be a osx problem?
Can I go back to earlier osx?
Anyone using 10.8.3, retina, and can do fullscreen mode?
    best
    thomas

What format sources and what are your sequence settings?  I seem to remember that some non-standard formats will not play in full screen mode.
Also, you might try deleting your preferences.  I strongly recommend using digital rebellion's preference manager to back up, trash and restore fcp and many other apps preferences.

  • My MacBook Pro mid 2012 stopped working completely.

It was fully charged, and I was on battery, and all of a sudden it stopped working. The display went black, and powering on doesn't work. LEDs don't light up after pressing the charge indicator button even though I am sure it is (almost) fully charged.
I tried connecting the power adaptor and the green LED doesn't glow. There seems to be some problem with my MacBook since my charger is working fine with other MacBooks of my friends.
Connecting another working adapter, and powering on didn't work either. It has been 7 months since I brought my MacBook, and I am running Mavericks. I have contacted the support, but they say I have to take it to the store.
Unfortunately, there are no Apple stores nearby my current location, and nearby ones are like 5 hours away from here.
So, I wanted to ask - Am I missing something? Is there something I can try now?

    Hello Bharadwaj6,
Try resetting SMC by following the below Method.
Resetting the SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
    Shut down the computer.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
Press the power button to turn on the computer.
Note: The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

  • How to maintain a macbook pro mid 2012's battery life

    Hello,
I know that there are a lot of past posts of this, but they still leave me unanswered.  Being a recent windows user, I don't know everything there is to know about macs, however the one thing I do know is how expensive they are, so I want to keep everything in tact for as long as possible.
One of the key things I have realised from these discussions is that people are saying it's bad to leave a mac charging, it's bad to fully decharge a mac, and it also seems alright to not charge it fully or decharge it fully before charging.  These were all kind of confusing to me as I thought to keep a battery healthy, you had to completelly drain it before charging it, charge it fully whenever you charge it, and it didn't hurt to keep it charging constantly.
Now for anyone who doesn't want to read all thet above, the key things I want to know are:
How to keep the battery healthy
Will fully decharging it affect it
What happens if I don't fully decharge before charging/ what happens if I don't charge it all the way
What happens if I leave it charging constantly
And if I am charging it on and off at school, what will happen (i.e. one period I charge it 20%, then unplug it and then charge it another 20% the next period)
Thanks for all your answers in advance, and cheers for reading all this.  I hope you can clear me up .

FALSE information.  You may leave your MBP attached to the charger as much as you want.  It cannot over charge.  Avoid draining the battery completely.  That will shorten battery life.
I keep mine charging all the time but about one per mont will use it with just the batter yo about the 40% charge level.

You sometimes have to deal with realities.  When Ac is available, use it, but it will not be so at all time.  It will not have a great adverse affect on the battery.
Here are some articles that you should read that will fill in the details:

  • How to connect my macbook pro retina and PC to the same monitor(s)?

What's up all - any recommendations here are highly appreciated.  I have a gaming PC setup with two (2) DVI out's going to two 24" monitors.  One monitor has DVI, HDMI, the other just has DVI.  No use in talking VGA here.
    I also have a 15" MBP Retina.
Question:  What equipment (KVM switch) and setup would allow me to just have my monitors, mouse, keyboard in place and easily switch between my PC and MBP?

a other way is use the T model. connect the two mac with the  Thunderbolt cable or FireWire cable
