How to split a team project collection

Hi ,
we do have 100 projects in TFS , which 20 projects has never been used for long time so we would like to archive the 20 projects  with new collection called Archive Collection .
I had tried creating new collection with empty database and restored defaultcollection to new name and tried to attach the collection ,but was not able to attach ..any advise Appreciated Thanks!

Hi DT0283,
For your scenario, you can move the team projects in current team project collection to the new created team project collection. And you can use TFS integration tools to do the migration. Check the links below for more information about the migration:

  • How to split a PE1 project into two smaller projects?

I have a 1hr 36 min. project in PE1.  I want to split it into two different projects of about 48 min. each and burn two DVDs.  My intent is to get a better MPEG resolution for these smaller projects.
Can I select half of the timeline, cut it and paste it into a new project?  Would the effects be preserved?  I have a week of work invested in this project and I don’t want to screw it up!
    Thanks
    Fred J.

    FredJ,
    Welcome to the forum.
I agree with both Neale and Steve, though it might at first appear that they are saying two different things.
The bit-rate in the Transcoding to MPEG-2 will be determined by the Duration of the Timeline and the capacity of the blank media, whether DVD-5, or DVD-9. In most versions of PrE, this bit-rate will be a function of the Quality Slider, but the ultimate bit-rate for the combined video and audio is set in the DVD-specs. One cannot exceed about 8 b/s.
Now, with your Duration, there might be a very slight increase in the bit-rate, were you to take Neale's advice and break your Project into two parts, however, I think that his advice to study the result of your entire Timeline is good, as I doubt that one could tell the differences, unless you have a great deal of fast motion, of either the camera, or the subject, and then it's likely that the quality would appear to be the same to the human eye.
Steve is correct in that the result will have to be within the DVD-specs, and will only be 720x480, at up to that max. bit-rate. That is as good as it gets.
For the ultimate test, I would take Neale's suggestion on Burning to Folder one step further. Once that is done, you can first test your Project with a DVD software program on your computer. BUT, be aware that you are viewing on a higher-rez, progressive computer monitor, and its rez will exceed that of a TV and that of a DVD-Video disc. Thus, it is not a perfect test. To get an idea of how the DVD will look on a set-top player, hooked to a TV, you can either, also burn to a DVD RW (rewritable disc) to test on a set-top player, or you can use the free burning utility, ImgBurn, to burn to a DVD RW and test. The reason for the Rewritable media is so that you can reuse it for testing. You will NOT be using this disc for delivery, but just for testing. Now, if you feel that very slight decrease in bit-rate is noticed, you can go back to his suggestion on how to split the Project, and then produce a multi-disc. set for the Project.
Also, the ultimate quality and also playability of the DVD-Video will be enhanced if you use quality blank media. I strongly recommend Verbatim, or Taiyo Yuden blank media. Brands like Memorex, TDK, recent Ritek and ALL "store-brands," are to be avoided. One is also best served by buying slower speed media, as PrE will measure the speed of the media and the speed of the drive and try to get you the fastest possible burn. It does not allow you to set the speed of the burn manually. Most people feel that stepping down from a max. burn speed produces a better DVD. I routinely will drop the burn speed (in other software) to about 1/2 of the max., and have had thousands of perfect DVD's. One can set the burn speed in the above mentioned ImgBurn utility.
To distill the above: try it and see if your Project isn't perfect now, and if not, then break it apart into two segments. I doubt that you could tell the difference.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How to split an iMovie project

I've created an iMovie project which goes for just over 3 hours and am coming across some issues due to it's length.  I am trying to split it into 3 or 4 parts (projects) but am struggling to find an easy way to do this.  So far I've duplicated the project and in the duplicated project, I am trying to delete everything (audio & video clips) after the point where I wish to end the first part. Is there an easier way to do this other than individually selecting each clip whilst holding command and pressing the delete button.
This is taking a long time to go through 100's of small clips and I'll have to repeat it for each part I create.

Yes you can drag with your mouse to create a rectangle that contains everything you want to delete. Then Edit/Delete Selection.

  • TFS 2010: Query over all Collections and Team Projects

    Hi,
is it possible to generate a query which queries all collections and team project on a TFS?
For example if I want to know all work items assigned to me. Actually I can only query over a collection and not over the complete TFS.
    How can I do this?
    Thanks,
    Mat

    Hi Mat,
    Thank you for your post.
You may need write a TFS API to list all team project collections in server. For detail information, you can refer to Taylaf's blog
Retrieve the List of Team Project Collections from TFS 2010 Client APIs and Paul's blog
List all TFS Project Collections and Projects.
I hope this information will help resolve this issue.

  • Can I create a sub-team project in TFS?

In TFS, I know I can create several team projects under a team project collection. Now, based on my team, we want to create sub-team projects, can I do that using TFS?
    I found a link
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/vstudio/dn306083.aspx which introduces the agile portfolio management to support backlogs across multiple teams. Do I think that the agile portfolio management can implement the sub-team projects?
Another question: what does "Portfolio" mean?
    Thanks,
    shmily

If you have TFS 2013, you can create sub-teams within a team project.  Each sub-team can have their own backlog, sprint schedule, team members, etc.  The article describes how to setup sub-teams.
Portfolio is a rollup of work across all sub-teams.  For example, you can create a Feature work item and assign User Stories/Requirements/Product Backlog Items to the feature that are assigned to different sub-teams.  At the top-level team (which
is the default team), you can view the work across all of the teams.  This only works within the context of the team project.  If you want a portfolio rollup across team projects, you will need a third-party tool such as Planview.

  • Cannot open the team project page under browse

    Hi
After I create a team project in DefaultCollection, then I modify the name of the collection, which are all successful. I open
http://localhost:8080/tfs/ under Browse, I click the team project name, an error page is displayed: "Error
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable."  How can I handle it? Thanks.

    Hi shimly,
After rename your team project collection, you have to start the collection before you can use it. For your scenario, you can clean team foundation cache and the browser cookies before you access the team projects in the team project collection.
You can also use http://localhost:8080/tfs/TeamProjectCollectionName/TeamProjectName to try to access your team project.

  • Setup Team Foundation Server - Team Site Collection - SharePoint Web Application Settings failed with error TF205014, TF250025

    Hi
I have TFS server installed and working with other SharePoint farm.  (TFS installed,  SharePoint extension installed and Granted Access for TFS.
When Setup TFS - SharePoint Web Application Settings,  It ask for the three values:
    Web Application URL:
    Central Administration URL:
Default Location of team project collection sites:
What notice about the TFS sites that are working is that they are Path Based Site Collection.  Created with SharePoint Web Application managed path (like
http://spserver/sites/tfs_site1) and so it easy to see it will work.
    Web Application URL:  http://spserver
    CA URL :   http://spserver:portnumber
Default Location :  Sites or any managed path
We start using Host Name Site Collection (HNSC) to get the benefit of multiple unique site name without having multiple web application for each.  Work great but when we tried to setup and extend TFS service on the HNSC, we could
not get them to work and got errors when trying different variation of path URL.
After doing lot of searching on this, I came up pretty empty and I don't know if that is possible so my question is Have anyone able to setup TFS to work with SharePoint 2013 Host Name Site Collection?
If you have, a simple yes will be great but please share or even if anyone think it is possible or not possible, please share too.
Thanks in advance for any comment / suggestion.
    Swanl

    Hi  Swanl,
I’m afraid that we cannot setup TFS to work  with SharePoint 2013 Host Name Site Collection.
Also you can  initial a new thread in Visual Studio Team Foundation Server forums:
Team Foundation Server – General: http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/vstudio/en-US/home?forum=tfsgeneral
More experts for Team Foundation Server will assist you, then you will get more information relation to your issue.
For integrating SharePoint 2013 with Team Foundation Server 2013 you can have a look at the following blog:

  • TFS Build- Team Projects

Our TFS team project collection has four different team projects as shown below:
    TfsServer\TestCollection
    Team Project 1
    Team Project 2
    Team Project 3
    Team Project 4
We have a build server with one controller and one agent. Does one controller works for all the four team projects (under oneTeam Project collection) ?. When I set up the Controller it asked for the "Version
    Control Path to current Assemblies"
which allows to select just one team project. Does it matter if I select any of them?
What is the ideal set up for this case?
Also some of the applications in  TeamProject1 have dependent projects in TeamProject 2.

    Hi Pavani1234,
    Thanks for your post.
Yes, this one controller will works for all your four team projects if you configured your build server with your collection.
If there’s no custom build activity or other custom assembles in your team project, you needn’t configure the Version control path to custom assemblies textbox.
First, we suggest you add the dependent projects in the same team project. If one application need a dependent project, you need add this dependent project in build definition Source Settings tab too.

  • How to hide different Viual Studio Projects from each other in one TFS Team Project with areas?

    Hi,
at the moment I try to set up a "good" architecture for projects in TFS for our company.
As often mentioned in TFS documentation we try to reduce the number of Team projects in our company which is organized in different business units (BUs).
One great Team project shall contain a number of different Visual Studio projects, each one belonging to a separate BU.
    The grouping is as follows:
    Global Team project
           Business Unit A
                         Visual Studio Project A1
                         Visual Studio Project A2
           Business Unit B
                         Visual Studio Project B1
                         Visual Studio Project B2
The programmers in business unit A must not see the Visual Studio projects of Business Unit B, but both groups (A an B) use the same process model (that is the reason why we try to group them in on team project).
I try to put all the projects from both BUs in one TFS team project and separate them logically by an Area hierarchy like mentioned above.
But areas only separate work items from each other, not Visual Studio projects.
In Source Control Explorer I can only assign security issues on team project level (Global Team Project), not on business unit level.
So every developer in BU A can see the Visual Studio projects in BU B...
How can I model these dependencies?
    Regards and thanks
    Lothar

    Hi Lothar,
    Thanks for your post.
What’s the version of your TFS and VS?
In Source Control Explorer, you can right-click on Business Unit A folder and select
Advanced>>Security… to deny other group(s)’ access permissions on this folder. Then use the same way to set permissions on Business Unit B folder too.

  • How to split a "project" (movie) into two separate projects.

After converting two Hi-eight tapes into digital format for use with iMovie 10.0.3 (?), I created a movie called "Japan 1994" , complete with titles, imported still photos, etc. But it was over 2 hours long. (My wife considers any movie longer than 29 minutes 59 seconds as cruel and unusual punishment under the U.S. constitution). So I went to Imovie "Help" .....Hah!!!, surfed the web with my problem, with further frustration. So, I devised my own method:
      1. Created two new (empty) movies, "Nihon 1" and "Nihon 2" (Nihon=Japan, in Japanese)
    2. In  "Japan 1994", found a convenient break point rougly half way through, shift selected several clips up to the half way point.
    3. copied all of these at one time (command C)
    4. Opened "Nihon 1" and pasted (command V) these clips into this project.
    5. Repeated steps 2, 3, 4 for the second "half" (into "Nihon 2")
All of this produced two separate projects of around 1 hour each. Added appropriate titles at the beggining and end of each of the new movies.
    Worked like a charm.
Hope this helps other users of iMoive 10. (whatever).

I have a sandwich. I have been searching how to split the sandwich but it seems you don't split a sandwich. Someone said look in a draw for a tool or something!
    Wow.
There are lots of ways to do what you're asking besides what has been said. You can double click the clip in the Browser. Set In & Out points in the viewer and add the Clip to the sequence. No need to split or cut anything in the sequence.
You really need to learn a bit more before you continue cause this is a pre-noob question. I don't really know how to categorise it.

  • TFS 2013 Move Team Project to a new Team Project under the same Collection

Was trying to move a team project to another team project so that it can be named correctly.
    DefaultCollection
    ProjectA
    to
    DefaultCollection
    ProjectB
Everything I've found online is all over the place as far as accomplishing this task. Project be doesn't exist yet, so I am not exactly merging the contents with ProjectA.
We also are Not using VS Online.

Project Rename is a missing feature in TFS. The feature has recently appeared on Visual Studio Online and it looks like it will be part of TFS 2015.
There is no easy way to go this in any older version of TFS. If you have a small amount of data, consider starting over. Do not rely on hacks and open source tools that change the database of TFS, these can cause you to end up in considerable trouble.

  • How to determine process template for existing team project ?

    Hello,
I have existing team project ( TFS 2013 ) but I don't have information about which process template have been used.
Is there any way to figure out which process template has been configured in existing team project ?
    Thank you in advance !
    Kind Regards,
    Dipti Chhatrapati

You could also check the Process Template version If you have integrated TFS with SharePoint
    Here are the steps:
Team Explorer->Click on Documents -> Expand Process Guidance ->Click on ProcessGuidance.aspx
Based on the process template you have used, it will redirect you the guidance page.
Example: You are being redirected to the guidance for the following process template: Microsoft Visual Studio Scrum 2013.4... (Here i have created a new project on TFS13.4 server with Scrum template)
    Thanks, BHSR
