How to SPLIT my Library?

I have tens of thousands of digi snaps from 2003-onward, in a MANAGED library.
And I have just begun archiving all my OLD photos, negs, slides, etc (88-03), which is thousands and thousands more.
I'm backed up, multiple ways, and vaulted.
Obviously, I'm going to be adding more, and more digital pics, too.
I know that Aperture is "built" to manage HUGE libraries, but I recently had to re-load from a backup (due to the previous 3.4 upgrade debacle), and it took DAYS.
I don't know if I'm comfortable having a library that gargantuan
So I'm wondering what the steps would be to, maybe, break my library apart by, say, 5 year incriments.
Just looking for some advice from someone who's done it before
Thanks in advance!

Why did it takes days to, in effect, copy a few hundred GB?
I probably should've said "day" instead of "days." It took a LONG time. I'm connected to my TM by ethernet, and once I had my library corrupted by that update, I immediately "restored" my previous library from TM. And it just took FOREVER to copy it back over.
PS, my Aperture library is currently 431GB.
PPS, I'm backed up several different ways: Vault, Vault and Library to Time Machine, Everything to a third disc, and ALL OF THAT to a huge drive I have off-site.

  • How to split iPhoto library and NOT loose metadata?

My iPhoto library gets too big (30GB); hence I'd like to split it and make two separate libraries, one for 2008, one for 2009.
How can I do this WITHOUT loosing all the metadata and file structure: e.g. the albums, the MobileMe gallery, the Faces and Places data etc.???
Any solutions, suggestions, pointers are welcome. Thanks.

Splitting the Library will not save you any disk space, and will, in fact, use more as the database and support files will be duplicated. Also, it's less convenient as you can only access one Library at a time. If you're worried about disk space you can run a Library from an external disk.
    That said:
Duplicate the Library in the Finder.
Open the first one - lets say it's the 2009 one - and remove all the 2008 elements from it.
Then Open the second one and remove all the 2009 elements from it.
Result: two libraries, intact for the respective years.
To choose a Library to open: Hold down the option (or alt) key key and launch iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library'
Managing Multiple Libraries - including moving pics/albums/rolls and metadata between them - is greatly facilitated by using iPhoto Library Manager

  • How to split iPhoto library

my library is too big.  What is the easiest way to split? Has to be simple to access.

    Larry,
I have been searching a solution to my problem and came across this post. My circumstances and imac is almost identical to dougfromfruitvale to which you responded:
"Back up your iPhoto library, Depress and hold the option (alt) and command keys and launch iPhoto - repaid permissions and then repeat and rebuild your iPhoto library database" which Doug found helpful!
I am a bit more nieve it seems, I was wondering if I might find some more specific instructions to these instructions. My photos are backed on the cloud (i assume as I utilize photo stream) as well as a time capsule. I get pressing alt and command while launching, but what is meant by repaid permissions, repeat and rebuild iphoto library database. The last step seems particularly daunting!
    Thanks so much

Exporting a library will  create a duplicate of the exported library items. Usually you do this to work on a partial library on another computer and later merge the changed images back. Splitting the library is not the primary purpose of exporting.
If you want to remove the library items that you exported, select them in the source list of the library inspector and delete them (File > Delete Original Images and all Versions).  Then empty the Aperture Trash, after checking that you did not trash more than you wanted.
But check, if the backup of your Aperture library is in working condition, and check the exported library carefully, before you do such a massive delete.

    HI,
for this no need of BPM.
You can think of Idoc bundling concept to acheive this-just you need to do the external definition to change the idoc occurence
    /people/michal.krawczyk2/blog/2005/12/04/xi-idoc-bundling--the-trick-with-the-occurance-change
to achieve for each document no, one idoc, you can write small user defined function in the mapping with context handling you an achieve this.
    For this e.g

  • How to manage a library

I would like to save half of the library to a external HD, is it possible?
Storing libraries across multiple devices is not supported in iPhoto - you would need Aperture for that.
What you could do, would be to split your library in two libraries, one with the older events, and one with the newer events, for example.
A simple way to do this is
Update your backups, so you have a current backup copy of your system, before you start deleting from your iPhoto libary.
Then connect the external drive and check, if the file system of that drive is correct - MacOS Extended (Journaled). If the drive still has a different default file system, you need to move all data to a different drive and reformat it, see: Format external drives to Mac OS Extended before using with Aperture
Drag the iPhoto library in the Finder from your Pictures folder (or the current location) to a folder on the external drive. This will create a copy on this drive.  Test this copy, if it working. If you are satisfied, that the copy went well, delete the events you do not currently need from the internal libary on yor mac. Ensure that the external drive will be included in your backups.
The more flexible solition would be to use the paid version of iPhoto Library Manager. That will allow you to move selected events to another library. See:

  • Split iPhoto library to solve sluggishness?

Hello, we have 23000 pictures in our iPhoto library. It seems like iPhoto is particularly "burdened" by all the photos (i.e. sluggish at times). At least that's our theory.
We're wondering, provided our theory is correct--if splitting the library into multiple libraries, and then setting iPhoto;s default library just to the most recent pictures would solve its sluggishness?
Would that help, or would anyone have other ideas how to give iPhoto a break from having to load 23000 pics every time we load it?
    many thanks!
    --sluggish in Dallas

i split the library by creating a new one and them importing the pics I wanted to have ready access to in a streamlined library.
problem is, all my ratings didn't come across in the import. what did I do wrong? I even check the prefs file to ensure ratings and other metadata would be included in the import, but no dice.
    any ideas?

  • How to add a library (libSomeRandomlib.so) to a project....??

Ok, so I've been trying to get CERN's ROOT program/libraries to work in an xcode project for a while, but I'm running into one really weird error, and I think I may just not know how to add a library to a project correctly.
Suppose I create a new Xcode C++ command line tool project. I hit Build and go, and it gives me a nice little Hello World! in the console, just as it should. If I then click on the project in Groups & Files, go to Project>Add to Project..., and choose, say, libCint.so, from my root/lib directory, and click ok, then click Build & Go, I get an error in the console:
    dyld: Library not loaded: @rpath/libCint.so
    Referenced from: /Users/paulthompson/Documents/Programming/Build Products/Debug/LibraryIncludeTest
    Reason: image not found
    sharedlibrary apply-load-rules all
Data Formatters temporarily unavailable, will re-try after a 'continue'. (Cannot call into the loader at present, it is locked.)
My assumption is that either I'm missing a step in the process of adding a library, or else there is something jacked up with the libraries themselves. Anyone have any advice?
    Thanks,
    Paul
EDIT* Oh, I should mention that the actuall binary that gets built after adding the library WILL execute properly in the Finder, or from terminal, just not with the Build & Go, or Go commands from within xcode.

I honestly don't know much about @rpath. I found this page that explains it a bit more: http://blogs.sun.com/dipol/entry/dynamiclibraries_rpath_andmac
So, since I don't want to deploy with the environment variable set, I should ask, what IS the correct, MacOS X way to do it?
The best way to find that is to look at how Apple does it. They put frameworks in /System/Library/Frameworks and regular shared libraries in the standard places. You can do the same. Put your frameworks into /Library/Frameworks and your shared libraries into /usr/local-based paths.
If you want to create stand-alone executables that can be installed via drag-n-drop, you can put shared libraries inside the application bundle. If your shared libraries/frameworks are elsewhere, you will need some sort of installer to get them installed.
I've been sifting through Apple's developer documentation but I have yet to find a concise, straightforward explanation of how to add shared libraries. I'm horribly confused at this point. Is there a good tutorial available anywhere for both the general unix case of linking to dylibs and .so's, and the Mac specific case?
Hopefully someone else knows an answer for this one.
*EDIT* I do already have the variable defined both in ~/.MacOS/environment.plist and also in Xcode as an additional user variable.
I'm not sure about the whole RPATH thing. Setting environment.plist will define environment variables for use in the Finder, but that is really a hack. There are better ways to do it, but if you are porting some open-source programs, that may be the only way. You should be able to define those variables in Xcode. You have to selected the debug executable under "Exectuables"

  • How to Move iTunes Library BACK to the Hard Drive

Almost every single support topic/YouTube video shows how to move the library to an external drive.  I did that... about a year ago. I recall it being very easy. I just moved, changed the location and that was that.  I want to give my external drive to my friend, though... and want to to move all the content back to the original location on my hard drive... but I'm not sure how/where.  What I THINK I'm supposed to do is copy the music folder back to ITunes Media\Music.
    Ideas?

  • How does iCloud Photo Library and Optimize iPhone Storage Work?

Even Apple Phone support can't answer these questions:
How does iCloud Photo Library (Beta) from yesterday's 8.1 update with Optimize iPhone Storage turned on work? (I'm on an iPhone 6)
It only stores your iPhone/iPad versions on your device, which is amazing. Why would you need anything else? It freed up around 8-10GB of space on my device which is amazing. But how does it work when you use it?
When you email it seems to ask you, when sending what size you want to send like it's always done. It gives you the original 2.4MB version. This works like I'd imagine and when I received the test email the photo was correct. In this case I assume it hits iCloud and sends it from there, not your actual device. (Like it doesn't re-download it to email it). Correct?
When posting to Facebook, does it do this same thing? Or is this something Facebook has to build into their iOS app in an update? Or does it just work? Correct?
When posting to Instagram, does it grab the right version. Obviously the phone optimized version should be fine, but when viewing on a Desktop version of Instagram at instagram.com, will it show the right version?
Sometimes I backup photos using Image Capture on the Mac. If I did that right now, would it only grab the iPhone versions? Obviously I can just test it but it'd be amazing if someone who knows these things could explain all of these use cases.
Do you need to be on
In closing it's more of how does this work? Does it work? Why wouldn't you want to use this feature if it saved space and made more sense? I guess I just would love some real clarity since not even the blogs are explaining how it works in every application.
In closing part 2. It does seem to work really well, it's just those fringe cases. I just viewed all my photos on https://beta.icloud.com/#photos and they're all there, easy download of the high res, delete, it deletes from my camera roll on my phone, it's amazing, it works, it's magic. Just tell me what issues there are with storing only low res iPhone on my device and if there are none, game on!
    Thanks!

    santiagofrommiami wrote:
And of those 4.3GB of backup, my Photo Library is 1.4GB.
So my question is, how do I prevent my Photo Library from being backed up to the cloud, since I already have a backup of it everytime I connect to iPhoto and it copies all those photos to my mac?
I don't know, sorry. It's supposed to work alongside Photos & iCloud, so that photos are stored only once. When it doesn't work you have a couple of options as I see it –
Delete the old backups on iCloud to hopefully start over (I don't like deleting the only backup of anything).
Forget about iCloud backups & use iTunes to backup instead, it might not be suitable if you have no computer etc.
    Buy more storage for iCloud.
I don't use iCloud backup, it bemuses me with issues like this, there is no easy way to resolve when it fails.
And one more question while we are at it...can I erase iphoto from my computer now that I have the new Photos app?
That is up to you. If you are happy you do not need it & have a backup of it go ahead & remove it. You can re-download it from the app store if it is already in your Mac App store account.

  • How to split all the fields of output ls-l from an internal table

    Hi all,
Using ls-l command i have brought the file attributes of a file like its read and write permissions, creation date ,path etc in a internal table.
Now how to split all these fields from the internal table or what should be the splitting criteria.
The field contents of internal table are like this:
    -rw-rw----    1  devadm     sapsys     18360    apr  29......so on
I want to split this into different fields.
    Kindly suggest.
    Thank You.

    Hi,
I think the delimiter will be space. For date alone (Apr 29) you need to concatenate after the string has been split.
    Thanks and regards,
