How to spotlight unmounted sparsebundles?

Hi,
Is it possible to spotlight index sparsebundles that are not mounted?
I am able to spotlight index sparsebundles when they are mounted, but if I have multiple backups of the sparesbundle and I want to search for a file but I am not sure when that file was created and added to the sparsebundle, how would I do it? It would be tedious and near impossible to go through each sparse bundle backup then spotlight for the item after mounting each sparse bundle.
Thanks,
Nhat

No. You would need some kind of third-party cataloging application to do what you want. I don't have a recommendation.

  • How to delete a Sparsebundle. A Faster Way.

After many trials and errors, I might have found a way to erase a Sparsebundle faster without having to wipe your entire Time Capsule, or using 3rd party programs.
My Setup: I am using the latest update of OS X Lion up to date. I have a 3 TB Time Capsule to which I back up to, through a Wifi connection.
For this exercise, I connected my device (Laptop) to the Time Capsule through a data cable and not through WiFi - please note that you can also do this through a WiFi connection if you do not have a data cable.
In settings, set your device to never go to sleep in Energy Saver - this is optional - so as not to interrupt the deleting process.
Open a Finder Window, click on your device name under "Devices" in the left column.
Then in the right window, double click on Network.
Then, double click on the hard drive where the Sparsebundle is located that needs to be deleted (click your way through until you reach the window where the Sparsebundle is located - i.e. in my case it was Device Name -> Network -> Time Capsule -> Data -> [this is the spot where my Sparsebundle was located]).
Highlight the Sparsebundle (do not double click on it!).
Click on the little gear button at the top of the window -> then click on "Show Package Contents" in the dropdown box.
After a few moments, files will appear on the right side.
Double click on the "Bands" file and wait for a few seconds/minutes for the bands/files to appear in the new window (there could be as much as 75 000 lines, and more, depending on how long you have been using this Sparsebundle).
    Setup to delete Bands:
    1.  Open up the "Force Quit Applications" window by holding down on "Command" + "Options" and the "Escape" keys simaltaniously, and drag this window to the right side of your screen (for convenience sake).
    2.  Decrease the size of the main Finder window that contains the bands, and drag it to the left side of the screen.
You are going to use both windows at all times.
    Delete Process:
Now, right at the start, relaunch Finder in the "Force Quit Applications" window by highlighting Finder and then click on "Relaunch" at the bottom of the window.
Wait a few moments for the bands to reappear in the Finder window.
Then highlight about 5000 bands at a time and delete them (choosing less will go faster). It might take a while to count the bands and start the deleting process, but be patient.
Then, after the selected lines are deleted, (OR at any time if the process gets stuck for more than a minute), just relaunch Finder again and restart the process.
This is the trick - Relaunch Finder after every batch of bands you delete. (I do not know why, but it works!)
Relaunch Finder -> Delete bands -> Relaunch Finder -> Delete bands -> Relaunch Finder....... etc.
When you are done, do not forget to reset your Energy Saver settings in System Preferences.
By doing this, I was able to delete more than 17 000 bands in 5 minutes as opposed to waiting for 18 hours to delete 31 000 files at a time (in one batch). My original Sparsebundle of 75 000 lines took me almost 48 hours to delete in the old way. With this new way of "Relaunching Finder after every delete" the process was lighting fast in comparisson.

I tried this (well, only rm -R without the f or v) and after ten minutes nothing had happened, ie, not asking for confirmation for any files. Even something as simple as a ls command in the bands folder did not produce any results within ten minutes. (I also tried the band method but at best I was able to delete individual bands never more than one, I also tried connecting via SMB and I tried the third-party application Graveyard.)
What was much faster was to simply open up the TC, put the HDD into a HDD dock and delete the bundle with the disk mounted locally. Deletion of 1 TB consisting of almost 100 000 bands took about five minutes with an always active progress bar.
To anybody having a HDD dock (or an easily opened 3.5" HDD enclosure) I recommend this approach.

  • With OSX Lion, how use Spotlight to know the way to a file you are searching ; formerly , with Snow leopard you had only to let the arrow pointer on the name of the file , but now on Lion it didn't work, how to do ?

How to know the way to a file you are searching in Spotlight with OSX Lion ?

You are right, the way to the file appear down the virtual picture, near the title of the documents ; it is a little more complicated than in Snw Leopard , but it works

  • DVD Drive broken - How do I unmount it on an iMac2007?

As we entered 2 DVDs at a time the DVD drive broke.
After an unprofessional repair service (iMac is vintage, no original parts available) the DVDs got out.
BUT we get a "stomach like" grumbling from the DVD drive every 20 sec.
How can I disconnect / unmount the DVD drive to get rid of the noise?
    thanks for your help!

    Hi Heidi,
    Welcome to the Community!
That's not a problem, you can certainly download the product online. Please go to http://prodesigntools.com/adobe-cs6-direct-download-links.html and download Photoshop CS6 from there.
Remeber to follow the instructions mentioned under "Very Important section" otherwise download won't start.
    Thanks!

  • How to restore a sparsebundle

I upgraded to Lion from Snow Leopard. I was using FileVault. The decryption of the Snow Leopard sparsebundle failed. I am restoring from a timemachine backup. However, timemachine shows the sparsebundle file, but what I need is to crack the sparsebundle and restore my home directory.
    How do I do this?

    Very unlikely.
And it is hard.. you need to remove the hard disk from the TC.. you can do nothing whilst inside the TC.
Plug it into a computer using USB to SATA holder.. and then use a recovery software like Data Rescue 3.
If you have continued to use the TC.. the sparsebundle will be written over.
And if the recovery software cannot restore it it is very unlikely to work if there is the least damage to it. TM is fragile at the best of times.

  • How long to unmount?

When you use time machine it mounts the backup in finder. When you exit time machine it is supposed to un-mount it. For me it does sometimes and other times the backup stays mounted.
How long is it supposed to say mounted and why does it not auto un-mount sometimes?

I don't know where you that information from. Time Machine should not mount or unmount a backup disk. I just tested backing up to an un-mounted volume and I got a red "failed". You should keep your TM disk/volume on if you want to backup.
Here is what happens when I attempt to backup an unmounted disk

  • How to use a sparsebundle?

One of our machines had to be replaced by a new one. I wish to play the Time machine backup of the former machine that is now on a drive of another machine where it appears as a sparsebundle. I have tried my luck with the Migrationassistent. It would not help. How can I restore my old machine from that sparsebundle?

    Ahh, now it makes sense!
Connect to the old Mac via Firewire, and start it up in Target Disk mode.  (See  Using Target Disk mode for details).
That makes the old Mac look like an external HD to the new one, so use the From a Time Machine backup or other Disk option.  Each HD on the old Mac that has OSX or Time Machine backups should look like a separate HD;  and the one with two sets of backups will look like two.  You'll have to be careful to pick out the right one (see below).
If you use Migration Assistant, you'll end up with an extra user account, and the accounts you transfer may lose permission to files on other disks, especially backups.  So it's recommended to use Setup Assistant instead. See Using Setup Assistant on Snow Leopard or Leopard especially the green "Second Chance" box.
The tan box there explains how various drives and backups are shown on the selection screen.

  • How to safely unmount a drive from Air?

    Hello,
Now that it is possible from Air2 beta2 to detect mount/unmount of drive, I wanted to know if it was possible to unmout propertly the drive that has been mounted.
I'm developping a fullscreen Kiosk, where the user can plug his USB key to download photos from a folder.  So far, from what I have tried, if the user removes the USB key without unmounting it properly, a message pops up that says "Device Removal .. the device you removed was not properly put away..." (at least in Mac it does) .  It would be nice if I could avoid this message by having an "Eject button"..
    Thanks for any help.

    will do, thanks!

  • How do You "unmount a disk"?

I have a G4, with 3 Hard Drives, OS Tiger. One drive give this error message when you use the Utility to verify the disk -
"Verify volume failed with error Could not unmount disk"
I've tried the widget, to no avail
    please reply
    gfclef

You need to burn the disk image to the DVD disk.
1 - mount the disk image by double clicking on it.
    2 - launch Disk Utility
3 - in the side pane select the .img part of the disk imge in the side pane.
4 - click on the Burn button.
Follow this workflow to help assure the best qualty video DVD:
Once you have the project as you want it save it as a disk image via the File ➙ Save as Disk Image  menu option. This will separate the encoding process from the burn process.
To check the encoding mount the disk image, launch DVD Player and play it.  If it plays OK with DVD Player the encoding is good.
Then burn to disk with Disk Utility or Toast at the slowest speed available (2x-4x) to assure the best burn quality.  Always use top quality media:  Verbatim, Maxell or Taiyo Yuden DVD-R are the most recommended in these forums.

  • How to eject/unmount stuck volumes?

Hello, a few month ago a minor issue appeared on my MacBook Pro 2012 with Retina display.
The problem is that, when a .dmg image is mounted can't be ejected/unmounted until rebook.
I've tried everything, force ejecting them, ejecting them from disk utility,
killing finder and do that again, deleting the "com.apple.finder.plist", log out and then log in again but nothing.
Only with a reboot the images are disappearing. Exactly the same thing is happening to USBs and CDs at the external CD driver!
When I force eject them, it says that the were ejected, but they are still on the side list in the finder.
I have searched the web the last months but with no results. It's not a very serious issue, but it has become very annoying.

So, we can rule this out as not working:

  • HT2531 How can Spotlight find a file in the Library (in an app's plugin folder)?

I'm writing a plugin for SketchUp that lives in SketchUp's plugins folder in the system Library.  Even when I put an alias of the plugins folder out on the desktop, Spotlight can't seem to find it (my plugin file).  I've learned the trick of using the option key to reveal the Library folder in the Go menu, but why does the file remain 'hidden' from Spotlight after I've drug an alias of its folder out to the desktop?
I also tried using Terminal to patch Hidden to NoHidden without reliable results.  Yuck.
Thanks for any help you can offer,
    John Trotter

To view system and hidden files, use the Finder (cmd-F) to find.
From the criteria popup menu, select Other...
From that list that pops up, find System Files and Visibility; check both so they stay in the menu.
When searching for system files or hidden files, use those criteria.

  • LG Ally - How to PROPERLY Unmount SD?

I'm missing the Unmount step.... somehow.
    Here's what I've been doing:
    1) Connect USB to PC.
    2) Pull down Notifications > Mount SD
Then, when I'm done transferring files....
    3) Pull down Notifications > and I don't see the option to Unmount - but a warning to Unmount.
I tried using the "Safely Remove Hardware" option on the PC.. that works on my Windows Vista, but not on my Windows7 64 bit.
So, I just cycle the phone off and disconnect the USB.
But, there's got to be an easier 1 step option to unmount on the phone itself, right?
What's the proper way to unmount the SD.. from the phone options?
    Thanks.

Here are the steps for unmounting your SD card.
From the Home screen, touch the applications tab (bottom of the screen).
    Touch Settings.
Touch SD card & phone storage.
    Touch Unmount SD card.

Long story, I upgraded to Lion, so I could upgrade to the latest imovie.
BUT, unknown to me, I can now no longer use Eudora, my mail program for a dozen years. I can't access a dozen email address, nor access any of my archived messages going back 10+ years. Nor use any of the dozen discussion/announcelists I've set up for my businesses.
