I go to view, Read Out Loud, and activate. With a page open I try to initiate a page reading. There's nothing. I know my speakers work, because I can play music. Is there some hidden setting?

Please run Accessiblity report on your PDF. You must also add Tags to your existing documents.
Tools-> Accessiblity -> Add Tags to Document. See if that works.

You need to use the serial number that comes with the purchase to activate the software. If you have an issue with reards to the serial number, you need to contact Adobe Support either by chat or via phone when you have serial number and activation issues.

If you set your imessage off on your phone it will only turn it off on your phone i think I don't think it effects your mac. I'm not 100% sure on this though.
If you want to remove imessages from your mac - Open iMessage, go to Messages top left, and then select Preferences. Select "Accounts" and then simply "Sign out" That should do it.

Gulliver & Allan are absolutely correct.
The Startup Chime is part of the power on self test, and resides in the ROM.
If a fault is detected during the test, you will not hear a normal startup chime.
It is not an audio file that can be changed to another sound.
The Startup Chime is also needed to run certain troubleshooting procedures, such as resetting the PRAM.
Here ae two more utilities that will allow you to manipulate the volume.

You can also depress the Mute key went starting up.
