How to start JDK after download

Question

New to Java:
I'm at stage 1 of learning curve and cannot run the Java2 SDK v1.3.1_01after download (for Windows 95) . When I go Start>Programs>Java2 SDK v1.3.1_01 there are two text files.
I have created my first basic script and am trying to run the compiler to get started.
What do I do?
(I have spent lots of time searching the installation notes and the forum but still can't figure it.)

Thanks JirMac. I'm still a bit confused, could you explain further as follows:

(When I try to run the javac.exe it starts then closes again!!?)
