How to startup from CD, if CD not in drive?

i bought a brand new Mac Pro, and i have not turned it on yet.
on my first power-up of this machine, i want to startup from my system CD (instead of the internal system drive it shipped with)
how do i do this, since the CD is not IN the machine at present, and i have no way to open the tray w/out starting up the machine
i.e. if i hold down "C"with no CD, will the drive open to let me insert the CD OR will the machine default to the built-in HD instead?

Assuming you have a USB connected keyboard, hold the "Option" key while powering up the system. This should bring you up into a mode that allows you to select your boot device. Insert your CD/DVD media now.

  • After "upgrade" to new firefox, bookmarks didn't transfer. Help tells how to import from another browser but not old firefox. Also my anti virus (latest update) apparently not compatible with 4.0 Can I restore my old version

    Question
After "upgrading" to new firefox none of my bookmarks are in new bookmarks help topics tell me how to import from another browser but not from previous version of firefox. Another problem is my anti virus ( most up to date) is apparently not compatible with 4.0 liked the old firefox would never have "upgraded" had I known my anti virus wouldn't work. Can I get old version back

Check with Kaspersky as to what versions of Firefox their programs are compatible with. It is up to Kaspersky to keep their stuff up to date as Mozilla releases new versions of Firefox. And if they are unwilling or incapable of doing it, they should inform their customers of such and maybe refund their customers instead of stringing them along.

  • How to downscale from Final Cut pro not using bilinear method

I'm using Cinema Craft Pro MP to create my m2v's from FCP QT movies made from 422HQ sequences. I'm not getting the results that I know Cinema Craft can provide, the edges have significant jaggies, especially in high contrast color areas or black and white changes (But not always in every frame). I've been told I need to do a better job downscaling out of FCP for Compressor in a non-bilinear method? Anyone have any thoughts about that?
    Mac pro quad core
    FCP 7
    Compressor 3.5
Canon XHA1 material shot at 30f
captured at 422hq 108030p sequence - qt movie looks good.

I probably could have looked up this cinema thingy but I figure it is the responsibility of the poster to provide adequate information about non-FCP products including necessary links. Kind of like those endless, "Video inside my Lx41 is shuddery"—style posts. Define shuddery and describe this Lx41 object which might be hardware or software or a typo and maybe we can get someplace sooner.
BTW, I did google bilinear and got a whole bunch of silly stuff, non of it video-relevant but I didn't look at but a few of the 10 billion search hits; perhaps they have confused bilinear with bicubic? Dunno.

  • How to convert from NEF to JPG not dng Lr 3.3

Using Lr 3.3 for the first time. It downloaded my picture files as nef fine but then it wants to convert to dng? It does not give me the option to save as jpg? Some files I want as jpg... Can you tell me what needs to be done to acheive this.
    Thanks,

You first have to import the raw files into LR then you can make adjustments in the Quick Develop tab in the Library Module or in the Develop Module.
You can then use the export function from the file menu to create your image file, tiff, psd or jpeg. The option in the import function to convert the raw file to DNG (raw format) does not create an image file it is still the raw data.

  • I want to replace the hard drive on my IMac but want to know how to transfer from the time machine external hard drive to the replacement drive?

I have reached capacity on my IMac hard drive.   It is a 250 GB drive.   I have an external drive backing up using the time machine utility.  My question is once I replace the HD on the IMac, how do I load the new drive with the back up from the external drive?

    So many possibilities.
I am not an expert, but I have learned this much is doable:
Buy an external enclosure to re-use you old drive.
Buy a new external drive at least as large as as your intended new internal drive.  Make it self-powered.
Download CarbonCopyClone (free download, relatively small).
Make a CCC clone of the original disk on the new external disk
Install the original disk in the external enclosure.
Install the new disk in the main system.
Boot from that new external drive that has the carbon copy clone.  CCC will be installed on it and it will be bootable.
Use CCC on the external to directly clone back to new drive you install in the main system (the "bootable" flag will copy).
NOTE THAT AT NO TIME IS YOUR ORIGINAL DISK BEING OVERWRITTEN IN THIS PROCESS.  YOU CAN ALWAYS GO BACK AND REINSTALL IT.
Step 1 makes your old disk resuable as a spare copy for "anything".
Step 2 gives you something to use as CCC for after the recovery process.
Step 3 gets the software needed for cloning
Step 4 makes a bootable saved copy of your current system
Step 5 shifts your old disk to a usable place
Step 6 positions your new disk
Step 7 boots your existing install of OSX (just from a different drive)
Step 8 puts your original install on your new disk.
Now you have a bootable larger hard drive, and a bootable copy on a drive large enough to save all you can store on your new internal drive.  And you have your old disk to use for "anything".
Now you have TM backup in one place, and CCC backup in another.
Two backups is better than one, and one of your backups is bootable in case of system failure.

  • How to move from a "recovered data external hard drive" to the new Computer?

Computer 1's hard drive crash and all programs and data were recovered professionally and sent to me on an External Hard Drive.  Computer 1 was on Windows 7.  I can fun the program off of the External Hard drive fine, when connected to my my new Computer.  I click on the .exe file and it pulls up the catalogue as it should.  All off of the recovery drive.
The new Computer, is on Windows 8.1.  How do I get the Adobe Catalogues moved/copied to the new Computer?
I redownload Adobe 10 onto my new 8.1 Computer from the Adobe website.  Using the new download, I was able to open the Catalogue on the External Drive (F).  Cannot find a way to "relocate" the Catalogue to the new computer.  The pictures have already been copied to the new computer.
Please help!!!!!   Desperate not to lose the organization (tagging/dating) etc in 30,000 pictures+.
    Kay

Before we can give a solution, we need more information and we must be clear about the details of the recovery.
From your post, I assume that the external drive contains a copy of your picture files, with probably exactly the same folder path. I think that that path is identical in Win7 and Win8 (it was not in XP).
You have reinstalled Photoshop Elements 10 in your new computer.
So the main point is : what about your old catalogs ? It's quite possible that the professional recovery has also made a copy of those.
You'll have to search the external drive for one or several folders containing a 'catalog.pse10db' file.
If you find one or several, select the newest in date (or the biggest), the folder containing it is the catalog you are looking for.
If you don't find one, be sure that the explorer is set to show hidden files. Without catalogs, you can't restore your organization
Now, when you have found the catalog (the folder), you can do this test. With PSE and Organizer closed, double click on the 'catalog.pse10db' file. That should open the organizer with the catalog. Since the files are not in the same location as before, all links in the catalog will be wrong : different drive identification and perhaps different folder structure. That test should show you the thumbnails (the catalog cache in the folder should have been recovered; if not it's not that important, the thumbnails cache will be recreated automatically).
Now, how to 'reconnect' all files, that depends on what you want to do: keep them in the external drive or copy them back to the main internal drive. The problem will be either to update the catalog database to point to the new location or to recreate the same drive identification as before : letter and drive serial number, exactly same folder tree. We can discuss those options when you have made the first test.
If that goes well, don't worry about the location of the catalog : you can move it either from the catalog manager or manually.

  • How to restore from Time Capsule to bare hard drive

This is more for information, than a question, but I really hope that it helps someone else out facing the same challenge.
    Scenario:
1 complete recent backup on Time Capsule
2 failed hard drive on Mac
3 no startup or OS disk
[My teenage daughter was distraught, as her much loved and much abused MacBook Pro died completely on a college tour; quick diagnosis confirmed that the hard drive was completely toast. And with it, she believed, all of her work this summer on her college applications.
That was the bad news. Now for the good news. Unbeknownst to her, I had configured her machine to automatically backup to the Time Capsule on the home network.
Now the problem. We just moved home. No OS disks. No install disks. And I discovered that she hadn't told me that the optical disk drive was also toast. So no way to get a disk in, in any case.
So I have a backup, and a new hard drive to go into the dead Mac, and (fortunately) a good Mac (actually several). But all of the guides assume that you have some way to get the zombie Mac to boot.]
    Solution:
1 figure out spec for new hard drive, find one, buy it and install new hard drive in dead Mac (making it a zombie Mac - it moves but it has no real brains) http://manuals.info.apple.com/MANUALS/0/MA161/en_US/MacBook_13inch_HardDrive_DIY .pdf and http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+13-Inch+Unibody+Mid+2010+Hard+Drive+Repl acement/4305/1
2 mount hard drive as FireWire disk in Target mode by using ⌘T to any good Mac
3 download Carbon Copy Cloner http://www.bombich.com/
4 start the process of cloning, which involves creating a (hidden) Recovery HD partition http://help.bombich.com/kb/advanced-strategies/the-disk-center#recovery_hd
5 do NOT proceed to clone the 'good Mac', ejecting the formerly dead Mac, which was a zombie Mac, and now has a brain again, and shut it down
6 connect the now undead Mac to the Time Capsule
7 boot the now undead Mac, and restore as usual from the Time Capsule http://pondini.org/TM/14.html
[... and thereby obtain many many good father points]

  • How to restore from Time Machine onto an external drive

    Hi all,
I am a backup freak, and I don't feel entirely safe with Time Machine taking care of backing up my system unless I can test every now and then that I would be able to do a full restore. I've had problems in the past with .Mac/MobileMe's Backup.app, which would not be able to restore from an otherwise apparently successful backup, for one reason or another.
So, is there a way to test a full restore from Time Machine onto an external hard drive?
    Thanks for your advice

of course. connect an external, boot from the snow leopard DVD and choose "restore system from backup" from the utilities menu. follow the instructions and choose the external drive as the restore destination. make sure it's properly formatted. it should be formatted mac os extended with GUID partition scheme.
also, you might want to consider doing secondary backups in addition to TM by making a bootable clone on another external drive. use CCCloner or Superduper for such backups.

  • How to install from DVD onto machine without DVD drive

My boss has a laptop without a DVD drive, and wants to install Tiger. Tiger comes on a DVD. What is the best way to complete this install?
If I put the DVD in my laptop, then mount it as an external drive will that give us access to the DVD within it?

You can copy Tiger to CD's (if you already have the Tiger DVD's) and do the install from CD's. Or if your boss has a firewire port on his laptop you can plug in a firewire DVD drive and run the installation from there. You will need to hold down the option key to select which drive to start off of.
If you haven't already purchased Tiger you could buy the CD version on eBay.

  • How can I startup from my hard drive instead of Darwin/BSD screen?

    Hi,
I have read most of the forum that was discussed regarding about the darwin/bsd screen. I still can not find the solution to solving my problem.
After using the Disk Warrior disc as a startup to fix the directory, and restarting the computer. It startup from the Disk Warrior disc again. After i took out the disc, this is when the darwin/bsd screen appears.
    I had tried the following:
pressing OPTION KEY while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
pressing C KEY while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
pressig the SHIFT key while it boots up, still wont recognize the HD
Also, I had misplaced the disk utility disc..
can someone tell me how to resolve this situation..
    desepartely seeking help

    Hi!
I am not sure if you have seen this solution to Darwin/BSD screen, but it has worked for others: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=320663&start=15&tstart=0
If Option booting does not get you to boot off your external boot drive there a couple of things I can think of:
    1. Hold down the "X" key from a cold start while you hit the power button.
    2. Boot from the Installer CD, then go to the Installer Menu and choose startup drive.
    3. A third, for good measure. It never hurts to Reset the PRAM, and often helps. Reset PRAM (from a cold start hold down Command + Option + P + R while hitting the power button and holding for 3 chimes. Release and allow to boot.
Hope at least one of these help.
    Good luck.

  • How to Display "Advanced Startup Options" Menu during Boot (NOT Restart)

How do I get to the "Advanced Boot Options" menu when booting WSE2012? I currently cannot boot from the system drive, the installation DVD or a bootable USB installation drive since the September 19 Microsoft updates were installed. I cannot
do a "restart" to get there since I cannot get into WSE2012 at all in the first place. No matter how I boot the system, I can never get past the "logo/progress circle" screen. I want to restore a system backup from before September
19 but cannot figure out how to do it since I cannot get to the "Advanced Boot Options" screen. I searched through my ASUS UEFI BIOS for an option to restart with the advanced menu displayed but could NOT find any setting for this. I am totally lost.
How can I do a system restore (i.e., recovery)? Please HELP!
    Denis W. Repke

I've pretty sure I read that Microsoft removed the "F8" feature in Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012. In any case, I did try "F8" a couple of times on WSE2012, pressing and releasing it numerous times during the boot process, starting well before Windows
started to load -- and it did NOT do anything.
I also was amazed that the system would not boot from the WSE2012 installation disk from either of my DVD drives nor from a bootable USB drive containing the install files. Until this incident, I never had a problem booting from a "bootable" DVD or
USB drive on that server. It is also very easy to bring up the "Boot Menu" from my ASUS UEFI BIOS during the boot from which I can select precisely what boot device I want to use.
As I explained in detail in my earlier post on this forum, the only way I was able to get to the "Advanced Startup Options" screen was by swapping SATA ports for my system disk which "somehow" caused the next boot to automatically start "Auto-Recovery" mode
which finally allowed me to get to the "Advanced Startup Options" screen and recover the system files from an earlier date. After doing this, the system rebooted without issues. After booting, I ran a set of backups after using Windows Update. Then, I powered
down,"unswapped" the SATA ports and rebooted. No problems.
This was all very weird and frustrating. I still cannot believe that there is apparently no way to "directly" get to the "Advanced Startup Options" screen during a hard boot. If there was, recovery would have been simple instead of several days of frustration
    with a "dead" home server.

  • How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility

How do i repair or recover data from a corrupt USB external hard drive that does not show up on my Mac desktop or disk utility?
Last night i was using my external hard drive, for some reason the folder just closed and i couldn't find it on my desktop.
After googling solutions, i found it in the disk utilities, i clicked on the 'repair' button many times, but it said the 'error...' message.
So i ejected it to try again, now when i connect the USB external hard drive it doesn't show up on my desktop or disk utilities.
I really just want to either repair or recover the data on it because it literally has everything (documents, work files, photos etc) on it,
I downloaded an application to recover my files but it needs the USB to at least show up.recognise it which mine doesn't.
I know i should've backed it up on another USB, this definitely teaches me for next time to back up all my files.
Are the files lost forever or can i recover them by going to a shop or using a software?

    Thank you for responding.
This might sound stupid since i'm not really knowledgeable with Macs,
but since all my files were moved from my mac computer to the external hard drive,
is it possible to recover those files through my Mac - like recovering deleted files?

  • How to delete email from iPhone ONLY and not from server?

Hi. I have a Yahoo! POP mail account.. Can anyone advise me how to setup my iPhone so it ONLY deletes email from the iPhone and NOT the server. So, after I read an email on the iPhone and delete it, the email remains in the INBOX on the server? If not, I will send a feedback to Apple. BTW - I can dl and send email just fine. Thank you.

    ampullae,
When you setup Yahoo on the iPhone it defaults to IMAP because Yahoo offers free IMAP Push for iPhone users, as discussed in this article:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=305882
If you add your Yahoo account as "other" it will be setup as POP.
With IMAP messages are stored on the server, and messages created in one email client, such as the iPhone, show up in the sent mailbox on both. In addition messages moved to a different folder on the iPhone, will be in a different folder when you access your Yahoo mail via a web browser or another IMAP client. Likewise message you delete, will also be synchronized and deleted.
    Hope this helps,
    Nathan C.
