How to stop attachments saving to hard drive when viewed?

Hi
Possibly a silly question with an obvious answer....
I've very recently updated from iBook with OSX 10.2.x to OSX 10.4.7, which includes a newer version of Mail that seems to handle received attachments differently.
In the past, when I opened an attachment within mail, I would open a temporary (read-only) file which I could choose to save the hard drive or simply close once I'd finished viewing it.
With Mail 2.1, however, everytime I open the file simply to view it, a copy is saved to my downloads folder. If I close that file, the saved file remains within the downloads folder (i.e. it's not a temporary file), and if I open the file a second time, a second copy of the file is downloaded to my downloads folder.
I much, much, much prefer the previous system, which didn't leave me with a cluttered downloads folder, and which didn't use up valuable hard drive space by keeping (multiple) copies of files that I have no use for. Is there an option to set up Mail to handle attachments the same way as the earlier version?
I notice that there's an option (in Mail Preferences) to "remove unedited downloads" when "mail quits" (for example). Is that the only option I have to keep my harddrive free from unwanted attachments?

Hello Rob.
The following was copied from Tiger Mail Help which cannot be changed to the way Mail.app attachments were handled with Jaguar and Panther Mail.
Files attached to (or enclosed in) an email message are stored as part of the message. Since attachments are part of the message itself, they are usually deleted when you delete the message. You can save separate copies of attachments by clicking the Save button in the message window.
Mail also temporarily saves an attachment as a separate file on your computer when you open the attachment by clicking it in the message. The file is saved in the Mail downloads folder, located by default in the Library folder of your home folder.
To change the location of the downloads folder:
Choose Mail > Preferences and click General.
Choose Other from the Downloads Folder pop-up menu and select a location.
By default, documents remain in the downloads folder until you delete the message. To have Mail delete these documents when you quit Mail, or to not delete them, use the “Remove unedited downloads” pop-up menu in the General pane of Mail Preferences.
Mail will not delete an attachment that you edited and saved.

  • How can I back-up my hard drive when my MacBook won't power on?

The other day my 2 year old MacBook Pro just turned off abruptly and has not powered on since. I took it to the Apple store today and they determined that it's more than likely a problem with the logic board since its not getting power at all and now I'm going to have to get that replaced. Before I send it away I need to backup my hard drive to an external but have no idea how to do that when it won't even power on. We don't have any other working computers in the house but if I absolutely need another computer to accomplish this, I could try to ask a friend to help me out.

    Do you have another machine?
You can remove the hard drive and put it in an external enclosure in order to copy the contents to another machine.
If you don't have another machine, you unfortunately are going to have to find someone to back it up for you.

  • How to erase a Macbook Pro Hard drive when the screen is dead

I have a Macbook Pro (2007) with a dead screen and a motherboard issue. Just bought a new macbook and i was planning on transfering the hard drive over and selling my pro on ebay for parts, Is there anyway i can securely delete my data from the computer without seeing it on the screen before i decide to sell it?

Be sure your dead Mac isn't covered by this program:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2377
If it is, you can get a free repair, and it would be worth a lot more on EBay.
    Good luck!

  • How can I initialize an external hard drive when disk utility won't work?

Have a Seagate 300 GB external firewire drive. Formatted it for Mac. Had worked great and then one day it would not mount, got message box with choices of "initialize", "ignore" and 'eject". Clicking initialize, disk utility comes up with only the "first aid" button showing active. When I click on it nothing happens. As far as I can tgell there are no other options
Any suggestions on how I can repair this drive or recover data would be much appreciated.
    Thanks, Jim

OK, I suspect First Aid may be blank since Disk Utility "sees" the device but does not think there's anything on it.
    1. How about if you select the drive and then click the Erase tab?
    2. Also, what happens if you connect the drive, select Ignore, then open Disk Utility? Does the drive show up?
    3. What's your objective here? Do you want to try to recover data from the drive, or simply erase it? If you're looking to recover data from the drive, see my "Data Recovery" FAQ.
    4. Do you know what happened before the problem arose? For example, was there a power outage or was the cable or drive suddenly disconnected before the drive was Ejected? Any of these events can result in the drive's partition map being corrupted, leading to the kind of problems you're seeing.
    5. Did you build this FireWire drive? That is, buy and enclosure, buy a drive, and install the latter in the former? If so, have you checked the connections?
    Good luck!

I have all my music on my external hard drive when I try to add it to iTunes it is automatically added to my MacBook Pro's hard drive. How do I stop this from happening? I just want the music to stay on the external hard drive. Thanks!

This is true of course, but doesn't cover the situation where some files are in the iTunes Media folder and others are on an external drive. In my case I keep my music in the Media folder and all my films on an external drive (there are too many to have on the internal drive). In iTunes 11, and before, it was easy to add those external files by holding down the alt/opt key while dragging to the sidebar. In iTunes 12 this is no longer possible. There are several workarounds: use TuneSpan to move the file after it's been added; delete the file from the Media folder and empty the trash then use iTunes Get Info which will report the file is missing and allow you to locate it; constantly switch the Add to iTunes toggle on and off as required. All of these require a lot more work than just holding down the alt/opt key while adding.
    It constantly gets harder.

Is there a way I can stop
    this ?
No, Photo Stream is syncing with iCloud. The most recent 1000 photos in iCloud will be buffered on your mac, even if you do not import them to your photo library, if you enable My Photo Stream.
See this link:   iCloud: Photo Stream FAQ
iCloud pushes all your photos to the My Photo Stream album on your devices and computers, and manages them efficiently, so you don’t run out of storage space.

  • How do you get ITunes to STOP automatically scanning my hard drives?

How do you get ITunes to STOP automatically scanning my hard drives for files? I have a number of audio and video files located all over my computer. However, my music folder is located in one place. I only want ITunes to look there to ad music to my IPod? I don't want to add any videos to my IPod however, it automatically scans for this as well. Infact... I don't want ITunes to automatically scan for anything. Why is this doing this?

You can configure iTunes to sync only a subset of your music. Create a playlist in iTunes of the music you want on the iPod, and change the iPod sync settings. More info is here.

  • Tiger randomly stopped allowing my External Hard drive to mount and...

Hello, I have been using an External Hard Drive (1 terabyte Seagate, new) for a couple months if not a year by now for saving movies, and all of my iTunes on it. Its been working wonderfully. However it recently stopped being able to mount citing invalid hard drive and gives me the options of either eject, ignore, or initialize. Im not sure what to do. And also my computer has been acting funny every since the day it started. I will walk you through it step by step.
July 6th I was surfing the web and unfortunetly clicked on a link that aparently contained a trojan. Or atleast thats what my Antivirus notified me of. I had downloaded the trojan some how without a pop up or anything telling me I was downloading anything. (using safari) So i ran a virus scan and saw one virus was in my system and that it couldnt be deleted or repaired by my antivirus program, Im working on getting rid of that but at the time I had my Seagate 1 terabyte external hard drive attached via fire wire to my Macbook. It was working then.
Later that day I unplugged my hard drive and took my laptop around a little bit, nothing unusual. Then when i came back later that night I tried plugging in my hard drive and a pop up stated that the hard drive was unable to mount and I could either eject, ignore, or initilize. I tried may different routes, restarting, letting it all rest, etc. And in Disk Utility i try to verify the disc and it says its unable to and needs repairs. So I try repairing the disc and it says unable to due to an error.
Then yesterday I went to my applications and noticed none of my applications are there anymore. These applications were saved on the internal hard drive so it was very odd to me. However i can still use spotlight to find and open my apps.
My question is, What can I do to allow my external hard drive to mount? I dont figure it is the trojan on my system but could it be? If so how would I fix it? Im mostly worried about getting the data off the external hard drive then I can reformat it. Or if theres a way to just get it back to normal without reformatting Id love to hear it. As for the applications missing and the trojan on my internal hard drive I can fix that, at the very least Ill just reboot my system with my original OS Disc and just start fresh, its about time anyways.
But please. If anyone has ever had their external hard drive just stop mounting and figured out what to do I would be ever so grateful to hear how you did so. The hard drive itself isnt damaged, its not making any unusual sounds. Whenever i plug it into the computer it acts like normal (turning on and what not) until the computer tells me it cannot mount then nothing happens. Ive looked online and it seems to be a software issue.
If its any help I was downloading a torrent (.avi, no viruses) at the time. I know sometimes if one file on the hard drive becomes corrupt the whole thing becomes unusable. Regardless I would appreciate it if anyone knows a way to at the very least retreive the files on the drive, but preferably know how to just get it back to normal. If i could get it to force mount (via terminal or something) I know which file would possibly be the corrupt one or something so I could work with it.

    Bejan:
Thanks for posting back with the pics of the messages from your computer. Disk Utility reports "Underlying task reported failure" when repairing a volume is a directory error which cannot be repaired by Disk Utility. Unfortunately, Disk Warrior may not be able to replace the rebuilt directory, either. Tech Tool Pro has a better chance of repairing it, although this particular directory issue can be stubborn, and is often rooted in a hardware issue. Your surest bet is to backup/clone the information on the HDD using a utility like SuperDuper or Carbon Copy Cloner, completely reformat and erase the HDD (directions below), then restore data from backup.
Formatting, Partitioning Erasing an External HDD
    • Connect external HDD to computer
    • Turn on external HDD
    • Start up computer and log in
    • Go to Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility and launch DU.
    • Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in left side bar.
    • Select Partition tab in main panel.
    • Click on Options button
    • Select Apple Partition Map (PPC Macs) or GUID Partition Table (Intel Macs)
    • Click OK
    • Select number of partitions in pull-down menu above Volume diagram.
For more partitions than one, after you have selected the number of partitions adjust the size of the partition by selecting the top partition and typing in the size; then move down if more adjustments need to be made.
(See Dr. Smoke’s FAQ Backup and Recovery for tips on partitioning external HDD)
    • Type in name in Name field (usually Macintosh HD)
    • Select Volume Format as Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    • Click Partition button at bottom of panel.
    • Select Erase tab
    • Select the sub-volume (indented) under Manufacturer ID
    • Check to be sure your Volume Name and Volume Format are correct.
    • Click Erase button
    • Repeat above procedure to erase each partition
    • Quit Disk Utility.

  • How to i get my usb hard drive to auto show on desk top

    Hi
I have a small business and so multiple macs with 1 single external hard drive for storage
One of the Macs automatically connects to the USB hard drive when the mac starts up in a morning, whereas with the others you have to search for the shared drive and manually connect to it.
We have now changed to a new hard drive and would like all the Macs to automatically link in the morning and so wondered how this is done. Also the older mac is now still looking for the old drive and I cant stop it!
    Hope this makes sense?
    Hope someone can help
    Cheers
    Michael

You need to find the IP of that drive.
If they in fact do show up on the Desktop, then create a new Folder maybe named Shares on/in the Desktop, drag all those Shares shown on the Desktop to that Folder, drag that Folder to the right side of the Dock between Applications & Trash, this should give you a popup menu to select from.:-)
Mount that Share once, then once the Globe Icon shows up on the Desktop, drag that Globe Icon to the right side of the Dock between Applications & Trash. You now have a Dynamic Mount, a quick click on the Icon in the Dock will connect you.

  • How do I access new second hard drive?

Hi! I am newbie, I am sorry if this a dumb question...
How do I access my second hard drive?
    This is what I have:
    SparcStation5 170Mhz, 192MB memory.2HDD (one 4.3GB w/ OS, second Hdd 4.3GB)
I had my sparc working with Solaris 8 just perfect!
I added the second hard drive, no problems, I formatted the HDD from withing Solaris OS, (I can probe-scsi from openBoot promt and it showes OK), everything is OK so far, I can see the send hard drive using format, I can partition it and create slices on it, everything seems to be OK, I have no problems making partitions and everything on that Hdd. But when I try 'ls', I can't see anything on that disk, any suggestions? I tried several ways from my manual/book, including mount and it reads 'no acces point on mount' or somthing like that.
this is what I see from format command:
disk 0. (seegate 4.3GB.....) this is my new hard drive (already formated and partioned, I created a new partition /usr with 3.75GB on partition 6. Partition 3 is used by the hdd with a totoal of 4GB . this shows as c0t1d0
disk 1. (SUN4.2GB) this is the hard drive with the OS Solaris 8. this is c0t3d0
    Am I missing something?
    Thanks!

    hi there ...
    read below--
Find out the address of the drive
    STOP+A
At the OK prompt, type probe-scsi. This will list all scsi devices on the system. Find the new drive.
Type boot -r so the OS will see the new drive.
Login as root and type format. Pick the new drive. The drives are listed as c(controller #)t(scsi id or target #)d(disk #). Label drive is required (it will tell you if the drive is not labeled).
Next, type partition. Partition the drive as required (always leave partition 2 as the whole drive as it is informational to the OS
Type print to list the current partitions. When you are done making changes type label
To return to the OS prompt, type quit twice
    newfs /dev/dsk/DRIVE-ADDRESS
    (ie c0t1d0s0) (controller 0 target(ID) 1 disk 0 slice(partition) 0).
mkdir directory, where directory is the directory you want to mount the drive on
    (ie, /disk2)
    mount /dev/dsk/DRIVE-ADDRESS directory
Add the new drive to your /etc/vfstab file.
    (ie. /dev/dsk/c0t1d0s0 /dev/rdsk/c0t1d0s0 /disk2 ufs 1 yes - )

  • How can my daughter use the hard drive in the Time Capsule ...

So, I am in Oklahoma and my daughter is in Tennessee...
She has a Time Capsule where the Wi-fi base station quit working, but the hard drive may be OK.
She bought an Airport Express to use as a wi-fi router.
    The question, then, is:
How can my daughter use the hard drive in the Time Capsule to do Time Machine backups?
Thank you very much for your insights.
    Roberto

It can be done but is very messy. That is assuming the TC is still functional which I kind of doubt.. the wifi is seldom the only thing that will die .. so whatever problems it has the wifi would be the least of it.
Anyway.. do a factory reset to get started.
    The Factory Reset Gen1-4.
Unplug your TC. Hold in reset. and power the TC back on.. without releasing reset for about 10sec. When the status light flashes rapidly; release it.
Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel..  add no more pressure after that.
TC will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations.
No files are deleted on the hard disk.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
If the LED is not lit then the TC is dead, not just the wireless.
The setup for using the TC is explained in the bottom of this thread.
TC in a second local network.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4817218?tstart=30
The idea is to set the TC to provide router function.. and the computer plugged in by ethernet to as a second network.. but there are rules on how this is done which I have explained in that thread.
I notice that Mountain Lion deals better with order of network priority than Snow Leopard used to .. so it might not need to have manually set gateway and dns.. although I would still recommend it. It simply stops the second network causing issues.
It is much easier to simply purchase an external drive and plug that in.
It is cheaper, faster and more reliable than using the TC for TM anyway.
Plus a lot of the later machines no longer have ethernet ports.. and using dongles is far from neat.. although thunderbolt to ethernet is IMHO necessary accessory for anyone without ethernet.

I have a new MAcBook Air and my photos don't fit on the internal hard drive.  I want to store my photos on an external hard drive which I will connect to my Air when using Iphoto.  How do I set an external hard drive as the default drive in Iphoto?

Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.

You really do not need to do that.  OSX is reasonably efficient and will do that for you.

  • How can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory?

i don't know if this question has been asked before: how can I use my external hard drive for my iphoto instead of my mac book pro memory? just like itunes all my song are save on my external hard drive. make sense?

Moving the iPhoto library is safe and simple - quit iPhoto and drag the iPhoto library intact as a single entity to the external drive - depress the option key and launch iPhoto using the "select library" option to point to the new location on the external drive - fully test it and then trash the old library on the internal drive (test one more time prior to emptying the trash)
And be sure that the External drive is formatted Mac OS extended (journaled) (iPhoto does not work with drives with other formats) and that it is always available prior to launching iPhoto
And backup soon and often - having your iPhoto library on an external drive is not a backup and if you are using Time Machine you need to check and be sure that TM is backing up your external drive
