How to stop automatic updates

I NEED Adobe reader, but I do not want any software to break into my computer and force itself on me.
I have had my preferences properly formatted for months ("do not download or install") but Adobe ignores the Preferences (both home and at work) and several times a day tries to update.  I have gone through my registry and deleted Adobe auto everything and Adobe ARM.  Still get update nags.  I have gone through all my Temp files and deleted everything I can find, including several identical files!
I am tired of being interrupted by Reader wanting to  download, plus I resent the program's rapacious behavior.  How can I stop this?  How can I teach Adobe that NO MEANS NO?
I'm sure there's something to be done that I haven't figured out.  Please help me.
Thanks.

Here is what you also mentioned -
" I have gone through my registry and deleted Adobe auto everything .."
If setting is missing, the default is "Download and ask me to install", which is what you seems to get.
You need to set iCheck DWORD value in the registry below to 0 if you want to disable auto completely.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Adobe\Adobe ARM\1.0\ARM     on 64bit OS
or
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Adobe ARM\1.0\ARM     on 32bit OS
Do not delete any files - it will not help, but can lead to unforeseen issues with the application.

  • Windows 10 - How to Stop Automatic Update July 29th

Hi, all! I just purchased a Lenovo Yoga 3 14. I'm in the process of setting it up (any suggestions welcome, but I've been reading through this forum and searching online for help) and have been unable to find an answer to the following question. The sales associate told me that any PC I purchased (which currently has Windows 8.1) will automatically update itself to Windows 10 on July 29th once connected to the internet.  My problem is that I will be sitting for the bar exam at the end of the month with this laptop (ending on the 30th). The bar exam uses ExamSoft (by SofTest), which does not support Windows 10 (yet, not guaranteed to do so by the bar exam - and definitely not something I want to have to worry about). The exam software requires an internet connection to upload the exam, though it is not connected to the internet other than for the upload. I shut off Automatic Update (for now) and am hoping that if I do not connect to the internet for long (though I can't control how long and it may need to be connected for a long time to upload), it won't update. Does anyone know of a way that I can stop this automatic update? (When I updated my old laptop to Win8 and then 8.1, I was able to opt in to the update and run it when I chose, as well as go back to the former version if I didn't like the new. It seems odd to me that this is an automatic update without option.) Thanks in advance!

If I were in your situation, I'd leave it as is. As long as we will eventually have to approve the download and most likely agree to several prompts, I wouldn't bother going through the extra work of removing the reminder. Someone else might have another opinion, but that is what I'd do.

No apologies are necessary. No one knows everything there is to know about computers. Feel free to visit our forums whenever you have a question. Good luck on the bar exam.

  • Adobe Reader 8: How to stop automatic updates

Today, I noticed that my system was trying to download 8.1.2.
I did not request a check for updates.
How do I disable the automatic downloading of updates?
I loke thru Edit | Preferences and did not find any options to do so.

    Did you reboot?
I've never seen the Add/Remove programs list go away, that indicates a deeper problem.
After rebooting, do you see the Add/Remove programs list?
If not, open the Control Panel, right click and select refresh.
    Does that fix things?
If not, I suggest posing this question in the microsoft.public.* newsgroup for your OS.

How can I STOP automatic updates for firefox & thunderbird?

Go to Tools > Options, Advanced, Update.
Under "automatically check for updates," uncheck the box next to Firefox.
Then click the button next to "ask me" under
"[[https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/questions/872089 When updates to Firefox are found]]"
If you don't see anything, wait eleven minutes and try again.

  • How do I stop automatic updates of my apps??

I am sooooo angry. When I leave updates untouched it is because I do NOT want to update that app! Most recently I DID NOT want to update iBook. I'd read how ugly it was and I wanted to keep my existing version. But today, I noted that it had been automatically updated and guess what it is every bit as ugly as reported. I am fuming. Surely Apple will allow me to have SOME control over my own device?!
Any help in stopping automatic updates on my iPad apps is much appreciated!

First of all, note that apps are automatically updated only in iOS 7.
If you are running iOS 7, open Settings > iTunes & App Store, and turn off "Updates" under "Automatic Downloads"

  • How to undo Firefox 5 in Win 7 and in XP? Generally, how to stop automatic Firefox updates?

Firefox 5 has reduced toolbar and other services on both of my 2 computers -- a Win 7 and an XP3. Would like to go back to version 4, stop automatic updates in Firefox.

That is a message about '''IE''', not about Firefox. The Mozilla/4.0 in your UserAgent string and in that message pertains to Trident rendering engine in Internet Explorer.

  • Safari RSS Stopped Automatically Updating!

    Hi,
I've been using Leopard since November 2007. For some reason, all of my RSS Feeds have stop automatically updating themselves.
If I go to Check for updates, it's set to every hour, just like it always has been. If I change it to anything else, THEN the latest RSS articles automatically download, but I keep having to manually switch the setting, in order to get any new RSS updates.
    Anyway, have any suggestions?

    Hi
Look again in the Syndications folder. The system requires the database3 file to accumulate feed information.
Other preference files: move these two preference files in your User Library>Preferences to the desktop:
    com.apple.SyndicationAgent.plist and
    com.apple.Syndication.plist
Restart Safari. Again, watch the feed number for a change.
If no change, try Safari from another User Account. For purposes of simplicity, after creating the new account, go to your regular User Account>Library>Safari folder. There, holding the option key, move the Bookmarks.plist file to the Public>Drop Box folder in the same user account. Then, after you log-in to the new account, go to the Public>Drop Box in that account. There, move the Bookmarks.plist file to the User Library>Safari folder. This way, when you open Safari, you'll have the same bookmarks file as used in your regular user account.
Also, make sure you enable the feeds in Safari Preferences>RSS.

  • HT4922 How do I stop automatic updates of Microsoft Silverlight on MacBook?

Microsoft Silverlight keeps trying to update on my computer and is really slowing it down.  How do I stop these pop up boxes for automatic updates?

Do you actually need it? Not many websites have Silverlight content, Netflix being perhaps the most notable exception. The best way to stop the updates would be to get rid of it.

  • How Do You Filter, Or Stop Automatic Updates From Windows or HP to a Windows 8, 2000 Notebook PC.

I would like to know how I can see automatic updates from Windows or HP before they go into my computer?  The reason is, is that these auto updates mess up my IE and my printer software.  I have a HP 2000 Notebook PC, Windows 8, 64 bit.  I would like to be able to filter or see these updates before they go in my computer.  Is there anything I can do, or a setting I can set?
    Thanks,
    Susie

    Hi Mikipups,
Thank you for visiting the HP Support Forums and Welcome. I have read your thread on your HP 2000 Notebook and issues  Microsoft updates. Here is a fix from Microsoft.
Type Update in the Start Menu search box, select Windows Update from the top of the menu and in Windows Update select Change Settings on the left side of the window.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can I interrupt an automatic update to iPhoto? If so, how? And how can I stop automatic updates? This current update has been running for over 4 hours now. I have a MacBook Pro w/OSX 10.9.1

Can I interrupt an automatic update to iPhoto? Also, how can I turn OFF  automatic updates?

as Larry said, just a caution about the App Store Preferences:
If you do not want your software to update automatically, disable "Install app updates".  But better not disable the option "Install system data files and security updates".  If there are security updates available, it is important to get them installed asap.

  • How to Stop automatic file saving on IPAD Adobe Reader 11.2

How can stop my PDF document being saved with the fillable form data when being using Adobe Reader 11.2 on an IPAD - the file is automatically saved when the user returns to the document folder.  The original pdf file was created from a Word document and then text, signature and date fields added using Adobe Acrobat XI and saved using Standard Save function. I am trying to achieve my users completing the template form using the IPAD and then emailing it. However each time the form is filled and emailed (which all works fine) and the user returns to the "documents" folder, Acrobat Reader 11.2 automatically saves the file with the form data

I think the iPad forces a different way of thinking. In general, you don't have to save files on the iPad, and that's important. The iPad has complete liberty to quit an app when you want to run a different app, or just because it feels like it. When you restart a good app, things are as they were when it was quit.
Resetting is a possibility, but remember that because of this automatic quit/automatic restart it might happen when you don't want it. A reset BUTTON seems entirely possible.

  • Stop automatic updater

automatic updater tries to run itself upon start up. How can I turn this off completely, I can choose updates on my own. Anyone with an A to Z instruction set? Thanks!

#If you open up Firefox and open the Options from the Firefox Menu
#Open the Advanced tab and click on Update Tab
    # Choose the update settings from here then restart Firefox. This will prevent automatic updates.
However I do recommend updating for recent security issues addressed in Firefox.

  • How to get automatic updates for P750 custom build

I recently purchased a custom built P750 and want to sign up for automatic updates. There is no option for just a P750 which is my complete model number.
    8GB ram
    I7 2.20GHz
Windows HP SP1 with all updates installed at this time.
How can I get automatic updates for this machine and operating system and if so, how do I get signed up for those?
Should I just choose a model number and pretend it is the model I have? Which number should I choose?

    Solved!

    Satellite P750 (PSAY3U-0RF03H)
All computers in the same part-number family (PSAY3U) are essentially the same. The drivers and utilities for this one should work.
    Satellite P750-BT4G22 (PSAY3U-08703H)
    So go here.
Hmm. Not many there. So let's go to the equivalent part-number family in Europe (PSAY3E).
    Get those here.
    Lots of ways to wiggle.

  • How to stop software updates?

Let the update finish. Do not force a shutdown.

  • Stop automatically updating the date!

How do you keep Pages from automatically updating the date when you open an invoice?

I'm running Tiger so there may be some minor differences, but I ran a few tests starting yesterday and concluded today. If you double click on the date in any of the invoice templates it will open a pane in which (among other things) is a check box that's labeled Automatically update on open. In Tiger it's unchecked by default. Check and see how yours is set. In my tests on 4 templates, when this box was unchecked the dates remained as I set them. Three I dated as 12/6/08 and one I left with the current date. All retained the date I closed with. I noted that only the one I left unchanged would respond to the double click.
    Hope this helps.
