How to stop/disconnect USB device on OSX?

How do I manually stop a USB device that I don't want the OS to recognize or run?
On "About this Mac > More info" page, my Dell Axim X51v Pocket PC is listed as a USB device. I'm having problems using the Parallel Desktop running Windows XP to sync to the Axim because Parallel reports that "USB device you are trying to connect to the virtual machine is being sed by another process." Wait 5-10 seconds, then try to connect the device again. If this does not help, find the application that blocked up the device and disconnect it manually."
AFAIK, nothing on my Mac is using the Axim right now, I have even disabled "Missing sync for Windows Mobile" and stopped it from loading so it must be the Mac OS not releasing the USB link so my Windows XP within Parallel is not able to pick up the Axim right now.
In Windows, there's a "Remove Hardware" option. But I can't find this on OSX after digging around for half an hour, I think I'll get much better advice here, so I really look forward to your help.

You wrote: "But I don't see the device as "mounted" on the desktop, or in Finder."1. In the Finder > Preferences > General tab, is the "Show on Desktop" option for CDs, DVDs, and iPods selected? If not, select that option and see if it appears on the desktop.
2. Is it shown in the Finder Siderbar?
Good luck!

  • How do I stop an usb device?

I've googled for much more hours than expected and I found that everybody just unplugs the usb devices having them still powered on.
Isn't there a way to stop them? All manufacturers of usb devices say that you have to stop them before unplugging.

I just unmount USB flash/HD/CD-ROM drives, and regarding printers and scanners I just unplug/power down...
I remember I had to unload the drivers when using previous versions of VMWare, else the guest OS would not have proper access to them, but this isn't an issue with VMWare 4.5X, and since I did not have any bad things happening when unplugging them, I just kept using the lazy way.

  • How to blacklist a usb device in BSD?

I am having trouble communicating with a usb device while running Virtualbox on my iMac (Lion).  Virtualbox is virtualization software which lets me run Windows XP as a guest OS.  I am trying to run Palm Desktop for Windows on the virtual computer and I have trouble getting the USB connected Palm device to sync to the Windows application.  It turns out the Palm device's use of the USB protocol is not quite conventional and so the virtual OS has trouble capturing it and presenting it to the Windows application.
Others who run Virtualbox under linux have seen this same problem with Palm devices and have found a workaround by disabling the host linux USB driver so that the Virtualbox application has unfettered access to it.  This process is called "blacklisting" a USB device under linux, and involves editing the "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf" linux config file.  My question is can I perform a similar operation in MacOS?  The BSD I/O subsystem is different enough from linux to prevent me from knowing where to go in OSX to do a similar modification.

I'm having the same problem.  I can't get OS X to ignore an SPI digital logic device (MCP2210) that I want to run from my Windows XP Virtual Box in order to control an experiment.   Virtual Box sees it but it's grayed out under the list of USB devices to mount in Windows XP, and I don't know how to get the Max OS X to released/unmount/ignore/blacklist it.

  • Mac Pro randomly disconnecting USB devices

    Hello All,
Am hoping someone out there will be able to advise me. I have a 1TB external SATA drive connected directly to one of my Mac Pro USB ports, (that is, not via a USB hub). The Mac Pro has a habit of randomly disconnecting the drive during file transfers. It seems to particularly do it when the screen saver initiates itself. I've disabled the screen saver but unfortunately that hasn't resolved the problem. The problem itself doesn't seem to be isolated to the external USB hard drive either. The Mac has on occasions disconnected other USB devices too.
Any suggestions or ideas on what the cause of it is and how I resolve it?
    Many thanks
    GPJ007

Yes Grant, I've exchanged the power suppply, cables, the HUB and also the HDD and checked them on my MBP - they work fine. The only USB slot that's working fine is the one on the PCI-E Card. All internal Ports do eject the USB HDD's and also have problem with Printercommunication. I can mount the USB HDD without Problem, until I want to access a larger File or transfer data from or to it, then it ejects itself - well after freezing the Computer for 5min first, until the unmount message appear.
By the way: Sorry, was a bit frustrated. I'm working as an Freelance Editor and really need to have a working USB. But the only thing I found were a huge amount of questions to the same problem, but no solution. And from apple side the only advice was to not use third party device or use only powered HDD's and HUB's. That's not really helpful...
GPJ007:  Ok, I hoped to not have to make a new Setup of the OS and all the program. Well in a few weeks there is a gap in the order chain, I'm going to reinstall the OS then and let you know about sucess or not.
    Thanks in advance

  • Disconnecting USB devices

    Hey guys,
i have problem with all my USB devices with memory (external HDDs, lumia phone etc. devices without memory like mouse works fine), they just randomly disconnects - no matter what USB port i use. Sometimes right after i plug them in, then they reconnect after few seconds, then disconnect again and so on. Sometimes they stay connected for a while, then disconnects. I am mostly able to copy what i need, but its very disturbing. Anyone have idea, what could be wrong?
I bought notebook without OS - i got original windows 8 Pro 64-bit with 8.1 update. There was no USB driver delivered on driver CD, windows just downloaded some. And there are none on msi web.

  • 13" MacBook Pro 2012 Not Recognising USB Devices on OSX 10.9.1

    Hello,
Since updating to OSX 10.9.1, one of the USB ports of my MacBook is not always recognising devices (external HDDs and Logitech Unifying Receiver), often when the other port is used.
It is the port on the right. First I noticed this problem with the Logitech Unifying Receiver, I thought perhaps it is because of the driver, but today I had to plug in my external HDD several times to get recognised and mounted. When not recognised, the Logitech Unifying receiver is not even listed in System Information, and HDDs are not listed in Disk Utility.
I had no issue with using both USB ports prior to OSX 10.9.1.
Anyone else is facing this problem?
    Thank you.

    Hi AMDeeb,
Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If USB devices are not being recognized reliably by your MacBook Pro, start with resetting the NVRAM:
    Resetting NVRAM / PRAM
    Shut down your Mac.
Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command (⌘), Option, P, and R.
You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    Turn on the computer.
Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys before the gray screen appears.
Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    Release the keys.
You can find more information about this troubleshooting step here:

  • Need information on how to comunicate with USB devices

I have an aquisition unit that connects to the computer trhough a USB port. Does anyone knows how to comunicate usb devices with labview using a Universal Serial Bus (USB)?

Sorry for digging up old threads, but it seemed most relevent, and I always figure it's best to add onto old then start new. For ease of the next persons search.
So anywho, My first question is... I assume it is not necessary to open and close VISA sessions to USB ports, right?
I am having an issue where my device doesn't like to work unless a specific series of events take place... very unlike USB Devices in my experience. For instance, if you have the said device plugged in, and you turn it on, then open labview. It will spit out garbage. If you close labview, do nothing else, and open labview up... it will spit out the same garbage.  ( by garbage i mean a series of y's with dots over it, and odd looking p's ... you know the kind of letters you get by pressing alt+###... i think in hex it winds up spitting out something like FF EF FF FF FF EF EF ) .... now, if from this current state, I unplug the USB and plug it back into the device, it will finally start to communicate properly.
Im curious why either labview or the computer itself are not recognizing the device on the USB port properly unless it is unplugged and then plugged back in. Ive tried to do reading on USB, and got all sorts of interesting tid bits of somewhat useless information.  Im trying to determine if this is something I am not doing in labview, or if this device should have a driver to register with windows, or what exactly the issue is...  Just a little background, I do explicitly know all the individual commands to this device so it is not an issue to communicate with it directly through visa...
Thought some of you might have insight or some similar USB experiences....

  • Windows 7 not forgetting disconnected USB devices, only on one PC, but not others/difer OS

Okay so I've got 3 computers:
    1. Asus M5A99X EVO MOBO, Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit
    2. Lenovo Ideapad u310 LAPTOP, Windows 8 (just 8)
    3. Asrock z87e-ITX MOBO, Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and Windows 8.1 Pro 64-bit
This issue only happens on computer 3 under windows 7.
I've got a KVM switch that's supposed to make switching between these computers easier, it's very basic, it has one USB port going into it, and I plug my keyboard into that, my keyboard has a USB port on it that I plug my mouse into.
When I'm on windows 7 on computer 3 the KVM works fine for about the first 4-7 switches between it and another computer. But after that I get "USB Bandwidth Exceeded" popups. I can switch the port it's plugged into the computer and it will start
working again, but that defeats the purpose of having a KVM. And today it even locked up while I was MANUALLY switching the cable between my computers front access ports, because obviously the KVM wasn't reliable (like I switched between computers once every
4-10 minutes), and even BSOD on me.
I've contacted both Asrock and the KVM manufacturer and they both say it's the other's fault.
So I shrank my C: on Comp3 today and installed windows 8.1 on it, and than I spammed the KVM switching like 8+ times, and it never once locked up or complained about me exceeding the bandwidth.
So that means it's now Windows 7's fault, but it doesn't do this for Comp1.
Somehow my new computers Windows 7 is not working right, and I don't know any viable options I can do about it. (comp3 is only about 1-2 weeks old) I've ran all the windows updates I can and it no longer says there are new updates when i run it.
So I need some help about finding out why my Comp3's Win7 isn't forgetting that a USB device is no longer attached, because Win8.1 seems to have no problem with it.
And just sticking with Windows 8 isn't really the solution, as I can't %^#$#!@ stand Windows8/Metro/Tiles/tablet$@!#onmydesktop.
(laptop is a work laptop and i have no choice, but it's modded so I have my start menu back, but still it's annoying anytime I accidentally leave my desktop.)

...because it happens with even just the keyboard.
Even though it all works with Win8.1 have you:
    -Tried a different keyboard?
-Tried connecting mouse and keyboard to an external powered hub and connecting the hub to the kvm?
-Tried connecting kvm to powered hub?

  • How to debug adding usb device

When I add my new Iomega Helium USB HD to my Macbook Pro running 10.6.8, the screen and keyboard all freeze. There laptop has to be rebooted. It does this when I do it standalone and when I use external screen, keyboard and hub.
It is a problem with my setup because the drive works fine will all of the other Windows and Mac machines I have.
The cause was the installation of the Iomega software (why did I ever trust Iomega software?) as I only installed it on my macbook pro.
Can I run some diagnostics/debug to trace the insertion of the USB device to see where it is going wrong? I have manually uninstalled the software but I am convinced I have missed something.
I have a complete clone backup from before the installation but don't want to lose other changes (like email etc) since that day, although I am happy to restore specific files.
    Thanks

And it used to be fine until I installed the Iomega software.
Iomega software, i.e., software to use an external drive.  Never a good thing (I guess you are finding that out).
I always recommened external enlosures which are dumb boxes, i.e., their only purpose in life is to allow you to communicate with the drive they enclose.   Additional software only gets in the way and you shouldn't need it.
If that box was running fine without their software what prompted you to add it?   And why can't you uninstall it?

  • Sony Vaio Authentec Fingerprint Sensor Stops Working - USB Device not recognized

    Hey guys,
    Now here is my problem:
I have a Sony Vaio VPCSB3S9E with Authentec Fingerprint Reader.
Everything worked fine until 1 month ago when this started happening.
Whenever I push my laptop into sleep mode it came back but the Fingerprint log-on didn't work. I didn't pay any attention to it until it started popping up a notification message that a USB device is not recognized which in the end, proved out to be the
    fingerprint sensor.
Now, i tried rolling back the driver, uninstalling the driver, installing the driver/software from scratch, even installing the latest software from authentec before the site was unavailable and  nothing helped. I tried going through several threads
around here but with no luck.
It works up until a pint where it starts malfunctioning.
    Any help would be appreciated
I am running a Genuine Windows 7 x64 version with all updates installed up to date.

    Hi,
Please also check Device Manager if its driver works normally. In addition, check Event viewer about this events.
Actually, I doubt whether this is hardware problem, it would be better to contact Sony to make a test.

  • How to stop external USB HD from unmounting?

I have an external harddisk (a Samsung 400GB drive with one FAT32 and one HFS+ partition in a Mapower MAP-AL31-US case) which normally does what it should. The drive is connected via a powered USB hub.
However, when the drive has not been accessed for circa fifteen minutes, it will unmount/"eject" - even when the Mac itself does not go to Standby mode. The result is a warning and a lengthy check once the volume is "re-discovered"/mounted by Mac OS. I had no data loss so far, but I really would like to stop this.
Can someone tell me if (and where) this behavior can be changed from OS X, or is this a low-level HD/HD controller issue?
I used to know how to fix such problems, but obviously this is the kind of know-how you forget when you don't need it for years ...
    Thanks in advance.

    Hello Zlig,
thank you. I'll uncheck - as you suggested - "Put the hard disk(s) to sleep when possible" and see if this helps.
But (this may be a dumb question) doesn't this also mean that when the MacBook goes to sleep (e.g. when I close the display or when the "Sleep" time has been reached) that the machine's internal drive will not be put to sleep either and keep on spinning? I certainly wouldn't want this when I carry the machine around ...

  • How to Stop Cookies & Other Devices Hammering Me with Repeated Ads?

While researching this I see many people have many different issues with the various ads we are subjected to while surfing the web, but I could find nothing covering the current annoyance I am experiencing now. My apologies if this is old hat to everyone. I thought it was to me as well until I found deleting the annoying cookies did not solve my problem. It seems the world of online ads has moved on and left me in the dust. I have no gripes with Safari or OS X 10.6.4 which is what I am using. I would just like to better understand this boil on the a** of web browsing, so I might more effectively deal with it.
This is the Reader's Digest Condensed version of the issue. While it's bugging the heck out of me, it doesn't warrant 3 pages of detailed observations and notes. A couple of weeks ago I was interested in a particular type of welding equipment, on a small home-hobby scale. I buy many, many items online. Most all my hobby equipment and supplies I get from online suppliers. What I was looking for was something I was not even sure existed in a small hobby version (a type of spot welding machine). So, I was searching online sellers' stock as well as technical info that might give me a clue to what, if anything, that existed in the scale I desired.
I was searching using the Google bar on Safari 5.0.2. I sometimes found Google's auto completion of my search string to be a bit pushy, but sometimes it was also helpful so I just went with it. For the better part of a day I searched everywhere the browser and Google took me. I visited at least a hundred sites that popped up on my search results pages and / or were linked to a page I visited. I eventually learned there was no viable product out there for me but like most tool nuts I enjoyed the window shopping and even bookmarked some promising sites for another day. Just a typical day browsing the web. I was never directed to any overtly hostile site. I never saw a single pop up ad nor was I ever hijacked to some site I did not wish to visit. Like most, my Safari settings have pop up windows disabled, I only accept cookies from sites I visit, I don't bother with private browsing etc.
OK, the point to all this. Every webpage I see since that day searching for a spot welder, has at least one ad for a welder on it. Most are specifically spot welders but not all. Most come from a Seller named Eastwood. They are an old school autobody repair supplies seller. I don't remember ever visiting their site as I know them well and they don't carry what I was looking for. Now I know this is all normal and I have not described anything close to a malfunction of software or hardware, but that's my issue. I thought it was kind of amusing for a day or two but seeing ads for welders on every single page I load is making me feel a tiny bit exploited. I thought I knew how to fix this. I searched my Cookies for any containing "weld" or "Eastwood." I found a total of about 10 and deleted them and emptied the trash. I figured this would solve the issue. It did not. I see welders everywhere. I feel like a spoof on a horror flick but instead of seeing dead people I'm stuck with seeing welders! Can someone tell me how this persists? Did Google sell me out (and are they still?) Did I just not dig deep enough into the Cookies? Or (and this is my biggest fear) is there some new super sophisticated way of serving these ads to me that bypasses my Cookies altogether? Something I never paid attention when (or if) someone was sounding the alarm? And, no I have never downloaded any questionable extensions, toolbars, helper apps etc. I am well versed in the usual Windows malware and tricks to manipulate someone's browser, it's nothing like that. It's not an evil app trying to take over, it's just a PITA Cookie or ??? that I don't know how or where to find to get rid of it. I hope that's all it is, or that you folks will point me in the right direction of whatever it is.
If anyone has time to explain this a bit and suggest what I might do to stop the ads, I'd greatly appreciate your time and info. And if you ever need welding equipment, I can give you several sites, a minute. Thanks in advance.
    Jim

Thanks for the help. Dumping Google cookies seems to have done it. I tried the responses in order and am grateful to Klaus1 also for the Glimmer Blocker suggestion but it was not needed. I wish I understood the "system" better and how Google gets around the only accept cookies from sites I visit setting. Seems Google is the 800 lb. gorilla and can do pretty much as it wishes. Thanks Andy.
