How to stop Firefox from Startup?

Hey, I believe this problem is part of a bigger problem.
I have tried suggestions in https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/989230 to the letter and yet nothing can fix it.
For those that doesnt want to click the link or copy-paste it. The problem is this:
Upon startup, Firefox opens automatically to my homepage. This happens recently ever since Windows 8.1 Update on 15th July, 2014. What also happens during the update is that my ultrabook that supposed to have instant-on feature nwo seems to be ultra-slow on startup and extremely slow when shutting down.
No programs have been installed other than the 8.1 patch update and the only different before and after the update is that now Firefox start up instantly.
Solutions that I have tried:
1) Task Manager > Startup > Wanting to simply untick Firefox to startup but no Firefox is there
2) Open CCleaner > Startup > Still no Firefox on it
3) Searched msconfig > startup >goes to task manager > repeat step 1
4) Went on http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb963902.aspx on the top link for windows startup > No Firefox detected whatsoever, 4-5 Yellow entry and 1 red
4a) Have no clue what these means, what i notice is that the yellow couldnt locate the file and the red is just there not doing anything i presume.
These are the four steps I tried to no avail and I am becoming highly confident that Firefox autostart is causing my laptop to start up slower than my windows 95 pentium 4 computer i have at the corner of my room.
Any suggestions other than the ones I tried would be welcome.

Is Firefox your default browser?
Ok dug a little more and there is a msconfig option I would recommend taking a look at.
# Run cmd.exe
# then type msconfig and hit ENTER
# Check in General what options are selected
# This took me to the Task Manager and I right clicked and "disabled" Firefox
# Then go to this folder:
# %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
# Check if Firefox is in there.
Looking forward to your reply.

How to stop Firefox from checking for add-on compatibility every time it opens?

That can be a problem with the compatibility.ini file in the Firefox profile folder.
Try to rename (or delete) the compatibility.ini file in the Firefox profile folder to see if that helps.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
You can also check for problems with preferences.
Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

  • How to stop Firefox from launching everytime I turn on my MacBook?

    Hi Everyone,
Everytime I turn on my MacBook, Firefox launches. It really bugs me, and I tried to stop it, but couldn't find how, either in system preferences or in the firefox menus.
Can someone please help and tell me how to stop it from happening?
    Thanks already,
    Quentin

This usually happens because you've added the application to the Login Items list in the Accounts preferences. Open Accounts preference, click on the Login Items tab, locate the Firefox entry, select it then click on the "-" button to delete it.

  • How to stop firefox from going to a URL your most is hovering over when you type in a URL and press enter.

When you open a new tab and begin to type a url to visit, if your mouse is hovering over any of the suggested results when you press enter, instead of firefox going to the url you have typed, it goes to the url that the mouse was hovering over.
Is there a way to disable this functionality as it is annoying when you are say, trying to access youtube or google, but then you goto a completely different page from your history because your mouse was hovering over a suggested result.

    @philipp:
I restarted in safe mode with all add-ons disabled and the problem still persists. Apparently a friend also seems to have this problem.
How to reproduce (to the best of my knowledge)
    1) click on url bar
    2) start typing part of a url which generates many results from history
    3) mouse over one of the results (usually the first as thats where the mouse is after clicking on the url bar)
    4) press enter with autofilled url in url bar
What happens is say that i start typing "goo" for google.com, firefox will auto complete with http://google.com, but since my mouse is hovering over a historic google search result it opens what ever my mouse is hovering over even though the url bar says "http://google.com"

  • How to stop firefox from blocking secure info from reaching non-secure web page? It's causing purchased products to not be delivered

This is a new problem that is showing up not only in my software but many others. My software uses PayPal to process online purchases. PayPal is an secure site. When the customer returns to our site they land on a thank you page. The thank you page must receive the ipn message from PayPal to know what product download page to load for the customer so they receive the correct products, which they just purchased.
FireFox is blocking this information from the secure site to our unsecure site and causing the customers not to receive download information.
FireFox used to work well with our product delivery system but the latest update is causing all kinds of problems. To you have a fix for this inconvenience you browser is causing customers and companies who use a third party processing system?
    Best regards,
    Steve Yakim

  • How to stop firefox from deleting files when history is cleared?

I cleared my History and firefox deleted my downloaded files from internal memory where it was stored,
is there any way to prevent deleting files when clearing history?
    Thanks in advance for support

    Hello ''Saurabh,
Firefox won't remove Downloaded files from your computer while clearing History. If Browsing & Download History is checked/selected ( '''''Firefox''''' >> '''''History''''' >> '''''Clear Recent History''''', click on the down arrow on the left of Details ) in History, Firefox will clear the file names from '''''Downloads''''' page. But it won't remove files from your computer's Hard Disk. If you want to locate the Firefox Download Directory,
    # At the top of the '''''Firefox''''' window, click on the Firefox button and then select '''''Options'''''.
    # Select the '''''General '''''panel.
Under Downloads, on the right of '''''Save files to''''' option, you can find the Downloads Directory for Firefox. If you click on the '''''Browse..''''' button, it will take you to that folder/directory and there you can find your downloaded files.
If you don't wish to clear Download History while clearing Firefox History, you can disable it :
'''''Firefox''''' >> '''''History''''' >> '''''Clear Recent History''''', click on the down arrow on the left of Details and uncheck '''''Browsing & Download History'''''.

  • How to stop firefox from opening new tab when opening a pdf that is previously saved on my desktop?

PC Windows 7 Pro 32 bit
I have previously saved PDF files on my desktop. When I open the PDF, firefox sees fit to open a new tab even though I do not have the browser open. This is annoying because after I close the PDF I then have to close the New Tab browser window as well. This costs me a lot of productivity time as I open a lot of PDF's for work. The PDF file use to show the Adobe logo on the file on desktop. Once I installed firefox it now shows the firefox logo?
I have already set PDF's to open with Adobe as default through Menu-Options-Applications

    Hello,
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Go to ''Tools'' > ''Options'' (or ''Firefox'' > ''Options'').
#In the Options window, select the ''Applications'' tab.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right handside you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.
Did this fix your problems? Please report back to us!
    Thank you.

  • How to stop firefox from switching to new tab?

The issue I am dealing with is that I want Firefox to open all links in a new tab but not to switch to them automatically. I have checked all the settings in the Tools >> Options >> Tab menu and I have them all checked except for the last two. I am on Firefox version 36.0.1 and I have refreshed Firefox several times and have deleted and recreated a new profile. Is there a setting somewhere that I'm missing or are there some settings in the About:Config that can be changed to make this happen?

Firefox doesn't have a built-in feature to divert ALL links to a new tab, only the choice of diverting links coded to open in a new window to a new tab instead.
What you are describing in your Tab Options is correct for the built-in feature. Some sites that use scripts instead of normal links might not be handled correctly, so if this is site-specific, we could look at the site and give you suggestions for workarounds.
I think you will need an add-on to handle other links. Hopefully one of the ones in the earlier post will help: https://support.mozilla.org/questions/1052093#answer-704101

  • How to stop firefox from opening new ad tabs when clicking on a legit link or even a blank space?

This has been going on for months now in every computer in my house. If I go to any legitimate website and click on a legitimate link (not and ad) a new tab opens up to either a bogus virus warning, an ad page, or a survey. I have reset Firefox to default conditions several times without any results. I have Kaspersky Internet Security 14 and ran a scan (no virus found). I have Hitman Pro and ran a scan again without results. I have also ran Malaware Bytes, and Norton Power Eraser to no avail.
Mozilla has to do something about this as it is happening to may users.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer.
Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware.
All these programs have free versions.
Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

  • How do I stop Firefox from thinking it crashed and doing a recovery when forced to use Windows Task manager to close a bad URL that I never want to go back to?

Long question, I know :~) There are web sites that I may visit that will not allow me to exit the site, so I use Alt-Ctrl-Del in Windows to start the Task Manager and force the site to close by ending the program. The new version of Firefox (31.0) thinks that Firefox crashed and send me right back to the source of my problem.
Your documentation for this process is as follows:
    After a crash
Due to unexpected issues such as problems with a website, software errors, or an accidental loss of power, Firefox may unexpectedly close. In these situations, Firefox can restore the pages that you were visiting when it is restarted. Firefox will automatically restore your previous session, the first time you launch it after a crash.
If Firefox crashes a second time, the Restore Session (i.e. "Well, this is embarrassing") page will appear when you next launch Firefox.
...and this is what I found trying to stop this process. Next, when I am forced to use Task Manager to close Firefox a second time to stop a badware site, then the 'Well this is embarrassing' dialog appears and I am finally safely away from the URL.
I do not want Firefox automatically sending me back to a problem site.
Thank you for any procedure you can suggest to stop Firefox from restoring problem web pages, Art Clapton

I am unwilling to attempt navigation away from these sites. The pop-ups that occur on the attempt to leave a site or to close the browser are exit traps offering incentive to stay.
Once upon a time, when the internet was less dangerous, I would be willing to close the exit pop-ups. Now, after twice being infected with malware trying to close the pop-ups, I now force close whichever browser I am using.
Recently, I clicked on the red X to close one pop-up, and it installed a trojan that I had to pay to be removed. When I clicked on 'Leave' in another exit pop, it didn't exit and it turned out I was giving permission to run a script file. Now that criminals have learned these exit pop-ups can be used to force a click action, the sites using them have become dangerous.
If I force the browser to close using Task manager, Please tell me how to stop FireFox from sending me directly back to the same site because it mistakenly believes it crashed when it did not. I forced it to close because I was on a site that had taken control of my browser and was not allowing me to leave the site.
No other browser sends me back to the potentially dangerous sites. I prefer Firefox, but the new version must have a setting that allows me to get safely away from a problem site?
