How to stop Lion from defaulting to iTunes at startup

When starting up by MBP 17 the defaut window is iTunes. When I shut down I have Safari, Mail and iTunes open and select "Reopen windows when lobbing back in" when shuting down. I'd rather Safari be the default open window. Also Safari, Mail and iTunes are all in full screen mode.
Any ideas on how to get Safari as the default startup window?
Thanks,
BobM

  • How to stop Chrome from defaulting from Mail?

How do I stop Chrome from defaulting as the browser when I click on a link in Mail.  I have opened Safari and changed the default browser several times to Safari and then closed it and even restarted.  However, everytime I click on a link in Mail it opens in Chrome and when I get into Safari agian the default is back to Chrome!
    Any ideas?

First, check Users & Groups preferences by clicking on the Login Items button. If you see Chrome in the list, then select it and click on the Delete [-] button to remove it. If it isn't there then shutdown or restart the computer. A dialog should appear:
    Uncheck the Reopen option.

  • How to STOP Lion from reconnecting a shared Windows drive?

There's a Windows shared network drive I connect to at work on my 13.3" MacBook Pro (OS X Lion 10.7.3, Core i7, 8 GB RAM), and it appears under Finder's SHARED sidebar heading. In fact, it automatically connects any time a new Finder window is created...even if I just ejected it seconds earlier. This causes serious sluggishness or even unresponsiveness from Finder when I'm away from work (like using Wi-Fi at home), because I think Finder is trying to reconnect the drive again.
It's not under one of my user account login items, and even when I delete its password access from Keychain, its entry reappears in Keychain when I open another Finder window!
How can I stop this from happening? Any advice is appreciated. I've clicked and poked all around Finder window settings, and perhaps my eyes have glazed over to where I'm missing something obvious.

That only happens if Firefox isn't able to create or update the profiles.ini file for some reason.

  • How can I stop Lion from overwriting my apache conf files

I am at the point of abandoning OS X forever and returning to loading NetBSD on macs.  I have never been so angry at a piece of Apple software.
On reboot, the server completely wiped out my apache configuration and rebuilt it.  Thankfully I had backups.
How I can prevent Lion from interfering with my apache setup?  I will NEVER use that crappy admin tool again.  Webmin is FAR superior to it if I need a GUI tool.  I can live in the shell very happily.  I don't want to have to install a new webserver from source if I can avoid it. I just want to stop Lion from destroying my conf files.
How do I wrest control from this monster?

All we did was not modify httpd.conf other than adding an include at the end. If you put your content in other files, it doesn't seem to mess with them.

  • How do I stop lion from opening all previously opened files on restart?

How do I stop lion from opening all previously opened files on restart?  I want to wipe all open files, since that seems to be the most efficient way to close lots & lots of open files (that build up over the course of normal activities)

One way is to always quit all applications before you shut down.
An easy way to do this (although in my own experience it doesn't seem to always work perfectly) is to simply hit CMD + TAB + Q and hold down all three keys.
When you do that the computer will cycle through all open apps and close them. If there are any open files that haven't been saved, it won't close them. So you should save everything you want to save before you hit CMD + TAB + Q.

Finder / Preferences / General ... change this
To this, for example, or one of the other options for "New Finder windows show":

I downloaded iMesh and I can't stop it from automatically popping up each time I request a new tab. I have uninstalled the program, but I want to stop it from defaulting as a new tab. I tried uninstalling the add on and plug in, but it is no longer installed as an add-on or plug in. How do I get the "new tab" request to simply open with a blank address in the address box instead of www.imesh.com.

Ok, I finally managed to get rid of it.
First I did the thing with the about:config but I flitered for imesh instead and managed to reset two thing but when I got to the keyword.URL I got the same thing as lolbabe98 did with the "An attempt to change your search engine or homepage was blocked."
Then I did a search on my C: drive for iMesh and discovered some things that hadn't been removed even though I had unistalled both the toolbar and the actual program. After that it worked fine and I now have a regular "untitled" tab when I open a new tab.
One last thing, when I tried to remove some of the files there was one that said it was in use, it was called datamanagerUI or something rather. The only thing I had to do there was to open Task Manager and kill a process called DATAMN~1 and I was able to remove it. Hope this helps.

  • How to stop Firefox from checking for add-on compatibility every time it opens?

How to stop Firefox from checking for add-on compatibility every time it opens?

That can be a problem with the compatibility.ini file in the Firefox profile folder.
Try to rename (or delete) the compatibility.ini file in the Firefox profile folder to see if that helps.
You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:
*Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)
You can also check for problems with preferences.
Delete possible user.js and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

  • How to stop Indesign from reverting to picas

No matter how many times I set up a workspace (which sometimes it erases) I can not stop Indesign from defaulting to picas. It is the most annoying and ridiculously simple thing that having a workspace should solve. Yes, my workspace was set up correctly. This is a problem that goes way back to like CS3.
How do I get it to stop. Ultimately, I don't want to even have the option for picas.
    kym

Thanks! I just changed that. Now I will see how long it holds because over the course of time my workspaces disappeared, as well as my preference settings. I catch it mostly with typographer's quote marks. They convert to inch marks and then I have to start all over.
Thanks so much, I will add another reply if it holds up.

  • How to stop mail from recovering the same message over and over again to the extent that it has wiped out all start up disk memory?

How to stop mail from recovering the same message over and over again to the extent that it has wiped out all start up disk memory?

You need to find and delete (move to the Trash) the offline mail cache (.offline cache.) It's a hidden folder (files and folders with a preceding dot are hidden) inside the Mail folder (inside IMAP) in your user library. Since it's hidden, in order to see it run the following command in Terminal in Applications>Utilities. Hit return/enter once you have pasted in the command.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true ; killall Finder
To reverse this and hide all those hidden files and folders again
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false ; killall Finder
Leave hidden files/folders enabled until you finish emptying the Trash so you know it's gone.

  • How to stop iphone from autoplay when plug into car audio system usb?

how to stop iphone from autoplaying when connected to your car audio USB ?

You need to remove the association that Windows has with that particular file type. To do that, you need to open Windows Explorer. From there, click on Tools, then Folder options. Click on the tab that is named file types. You then need to find the extension for the photos that appear in the iPhone, then click that registered file type. Once you do that, there is a section to select the program to open that file type with. You can click on the change button, and that will allow you to change the program that it opens with, or restore the default. There is also a box that can be checked to always use the selected program. If you unselect it, it will prompt you next time on what program to use.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to stop iPad from transferring apps to Mac?

First off, let me state that I have iCloud backups of the most important app data and I don't care that I don't have backups for the rest. I don't care that those apps might one day be gone from the App Store. I don't care about saving my game data.
What I do care about is that I shouldn't be forced to have a backup of ALL the apps on my iPad/iPhone on my MBP, which didn't come with unlimited storage space.
I think at one point I was asked by iTunes if I wanted to transfer the purchases to my Mac (or if I wanted to backup the apps? I don't remember) and I foolishly clicked yes. Now, even though I have clicked on "Rest Warnings" multiple times, iTunes still insists on copying all the apps to my Mac without asking me if I wanna do it.
I saw some suggestions about creating empty folders and stuff but I don't wanna do that. It just doesn't make sense that Apple doesn't give us an option to NOT backup our apps to our Macs. I thought the point of having an App Store where you can download your purchases anytime you want is so that you don't have to keep everything on your Mac.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
Keywords: how to stop iPad from copying apps to Mac, how to stop iPad from backing up apps to computer, how to prevent iPad from syncing apps

I hope you get a solution soon. I've been having this problem too. I under any circumstances don't want my apps on my computer either, I remember when I bought my first iPad iTunes used to have an option to choose whether or not to sync/transfer apps but now its gone and it drives me crazy everytime I want to transfer music. I remember this option was Under the tab "Apps" in the device and under the Apps list. It was a check box like the ones that the Music and other library syncing currently have. But i havent seen it in a while. Apple really screwed this up.

  • How to stop Mac from asking to "upgrade" to Mavericks

I have a shared MacBook Pro that has to stay in Mountain Lion for certain software to work. Others in my family use this computer on different users.
How to stop Mavericks from asking to install itself? No matter how many times I control click on the Mavericks item in the app store, it keeps coming back and asking.
Recently, someone accidentally clicked on update and it downloaded the whole thing. Fortunately, they got off before it asked to restart. When I clicked "cancel" I went to the Applications folder and deleted the "Install OS X Mavericks" app.
Please help. I don't want to EVER again have any user on this Mac be persuaded to "upgrade" (which shadily does not say "upgrade to Mavericks).
Other users need to install apps, so suggesting I limit their administrative access will not help.

Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, that didn't work. (and I forgot to list it in my original question). I had tried "Ignore" several times and all that happens is, literally nothing). The Mac ignores the CD and so does Virtual PC.
I've also tried going into Virtual PC preferences, looking for anything relating to CD's and can't find anything there. I've even tried sharing drives between the programs, copying things to the shared drive, and burning to CD on the Mac, but this particular issue can't be resolved that way.
The specific file I'm trying to burn with Virtual PC is a Midi File downloaded from Yamaha Musicsoft, to play on my player piano. Yamaha has a download program that "exports" files to floppy disk but it's not Mac compatible. So I'm using Virtual PC and attempting to export the file via the Yamaha downloader, either to a floppy disk image or a CD image, and neither is working as the downloader doesn't recognize the CD and won't recognize a virtual floppy either.
