How to stop Mail hanging on open message?

I am running Mac OS X 10.8.2 on a new (mid 2012) MacBook Air 11 inch.
I am having a strange problem: I cannot seem to close an open window inside
Mail, which displays an email.  I've tried Force Quit several times, but no luck.
The event which triggered this was Latexian (a LaTeX editor), which crashed.
It generated a crash report, and opened a window in mail to which the report
was attached and addressed to [email protected]  However, I cannot
send the mail, or close the window.
In Activity Monitor it is possible to send a signal to Mail process: Hangup,
Interrupt, Quit, Abort etc.  Will one of these do the trick?
If this doesn't work, I'm going to have to take this in to the Genius Bar.
Thanks for any help.
Sandeep.

Thanks John,
The "When all else fails - pull the plug" method does work here. And I can see the logic behind your answer.
As this is not a frequent occurrence (thank heavens! - probably a bad hair day), I'll not take you up on the suggestion to remove the send button from view - but I appreciate your thoroughness.
Is there no software-driven way to remove mail from the sending mode?

  • How to stop Mail from uploading read messages

I am rebuilding Mail on a new hard drive from a backup Mail folder (POP account). I changed all the permissions on the old folder (including the internal folders) so I could replace the "new" Mail with the old backup Mail folder. Seemed to work except Mail now does not recognize previously read messages as read. It continually downloads hundreds of them -they are duplicates. And the message bodies are blank. Obviously I forgot to do something in my manual restore. Ideas on how to fix this?

Does anyone out there have a handy fix for this problem? I'm having the same issue, and it's driving me nuts. As of right now I have 8815 "unread" messages from Gmail...sigh. Some of those are truly unread, but definitely not 8815. Is there a way to sync Mail and Gmail so it recognizes which messages have been read/deleted/archived/etc?

    Hi
This may have something to do with the "Automatically retrieve invitations from Mail" option being enabled? Click on the iCal Menu > Preferences > Advanced. It may also be the Alarms setting? This is for 10.6 iCal so it may be in a different place for 10.5?

  • How to stop mail from recovering a too large message

how to stop mail from recovering a too large message

You can't stop Mail from storing sent messages locally. If they're synchronized with the IMAP server, they'll still be present locally. The only way to get the effect you seem to want is to use webmail.

  • How to stop mail from recovering the same message over and over again to the extent that it has wiped out all start up disk memory?

How to stop mail from recovering the same message over and over again to the extent that it has wiped out all start up disk memory?

You need to find and delete (move to the Trash) the offline mail cache (.offline cache.) It's a hidden folder (files and folders with a preceding dot are hidden) inside the Mail folder (inside IMAP) in your user library. Since it's hidden, in order to see it run the following command in Terminal in Applications>Utilities. Hit return/enter once you have pasted in the command.
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true ; killall Finder
To reverse this and hide all those hidden files and folders again
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false ; killall Finder
Leave hidden files/folders enabled until you finish emptying the Trash so you know it's gone.

How to stop Mail from selecting addresses from the list of Previous Recipients?

    This is a related question.
I deleted ALL my previous recipients and when I create a new e-mail it STILL is getting addresses that I don't want - they pop up and I don't know how to stop this!
I switched from one ISP to another - I deleted the old e-mail account in MAIL - I DID use the same name on the account - is that why it keeps bringing up the old address?

  • Volume controls don't work in Messages iOS 8. And music stops playing when I open Messages

My volume buttons don't work when I'm in Messages on iOS 8, I can't change the ringer or headphone volume. More annoyingly music stops playing when I open Messages, but I can start it again. Any help on this would be greatly appreciated.

For all of you, the first thing to do when these things happen after an update, is to close all your open apps and reset. This will cure your ills 99.9% of the time:
Close all open apps by double-tapping the home button, then swiping up and off the screen with the app window (not the smaller icon).
Reset your device: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until the screen goes black and you see the Apple, then let go. (No data loss)

  • Can't figure out how to stop my MBP from opening programs at startup, namely word and messages

Recenty my MBPro has started opening MS Word and Messages at startup and I can't figure out how to stop it?  I've tried selecting and de-selcting the startup option from the dock but this doesn't help.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

System Preferences has a setting for this.
In the Users & Groups section you will fine a "Login Items" header.  This is a list of all the programs that will open automatically when you log in.  You can select any program and click the [--] button below that window to stop the program from opening automatically.

  • I have itunes set up to sync with my Ipod Touch and my Ipad.  As of today, it keeps looking for an iPhone to sync with and give me an error message.  I don't have an iPhone and don't know how to stop it from popping open with this error message.

I have Itunes set up to sync with my Ipod touch and Ipad.  As of today, iTunes has started searching to sync with an iPhone, which I don't have and pops open with an error message stating it cannot locate the iPhone to sync.  I have looked in devices and only the iPad and iPod Touch are listed.  Any ideas on how to stop iTunes from searching for any iPhone it is never going to find? It is annoying to have it popping up all the time with the error message.  Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You should really read the manual.
"How do you restore from backup? "
Restore.  When given the choice, choose to use backup.
"And how can I check to see if the pics and videos are on my computer somewhere first??"
They would only be where you put them.  What program did you use to import them?  Pics/vids taken with ipod are not part of the sync process at all.  You should be importing them just as you would with any digital camera.
If you did not import them, then they are not on your computer.

  • How can I stop Mail from replicating a message & trying to send?

A few days ago I tried to send out an email with three attachments which totaled over 53 megs. Of course it was too large for the server and I recieved bounce back that the message could not be sent. I then created two seperate messages with the attachments at appropriate sizes. I have multiple email accounts and didn't tink anything of the event other than "I should have checked before sending..."
The next day I started getting the system warnings that there was no available space on my hard drive. The previous day I had over 5 gigs of available space.
After researching a few options I noticed the Mail application was having trouble sending an recieveing from one of the four accounts. Then I spotted the culprit - the account was trying to send out the mail with the 53 meg attachment. It was replicating and storing the message and attachment in the "On My Mac" saved mail folders as "Recovered Mail". It had replicated 100 times - 5 gigs worth. The message was not in my Outbox or Sent mail folders.
When accessing the newly created "Recovered Mail" folder and trying to delete the specific messages the application would crash. The work around was to delete the folder. Howver, the next day the folder re-appered and began populating the hard drive with duplicate files.
    - Have tried virus scan (Norton AntiVirus) and using Norton Firewall to lock down all drive to internet traffic (annoying with block / allow mesages).
    - Have tried deleting the account and re-creating it.
After a few hours or a day the dreaded "Recovered Mail" file was back and hogging drive space.
The account is accessible from my iPhone and through web browsers with no issues. I can't even find the offending message and attachment. So I suspect there is a bug / corruption in Mail.
    HELP!
need to know how to fix it or if I have a new virus.
    Thanks!

    Is this an IMAP account?
If so, delete the messages in Mail from all folders and quit Mail.
Go the the website and clear the messages from all folders there.
Reopen Mail and verify the messages have been deleted for all folders.

  • IOS8 - Music stops playing when I open Messages app

Since downloading iOS8, my music stops playing when I open the Messages app.  I have to go back to the Music app to begin playing the music again once I have closed the Messages app.  I assume it has something to do with the video/audio message feature.  How can I get my music to continue playing when I open the messages app?

Rebooting my phone (a 5S) solved this issue, at least temporarily. I was ready to rush to the Apple Store and beg them for an iOS 7 phone; no music while texting is a definite deal breaker for me.

  • How to stop Acrobat from automatically opening created PDF?

This may be a question asked elsewhere, but my search didn't find it.
How can I stop Acrobat from automatically opening every PDF that I create in Adobe Reader?  I'm using using Acrobat 6.0 Pro.
Thanks for your help with this major annoyance!
    Cheers.

Adobe does not recommend Reader and Acrobat both be installed. They have strange interactions and can cause problems. If you do not have problems, you are lucky. Part of the problem is that they leave a part resident to enable quick opening. If it works for you, then fine. If you have some problems, you at least have an idea of what a prime candidate is for the error.

  • Mail hangs when downloading messages from Exchange

I've had the problem of Mail hanging when downloading from Exchange 2007, though from time to time it all works fine, suggesting all the settings are correct. Sometimes it will all work after a few forced quit- restart cycles, but this isn't reliable. Following advice on this forum I've trimmed the number of messages on the server (to c. 3,500), to no effect, and have deleted the Envelope Index file (which did temporarily alleviate the problem, but issues returned 24 hours later).
I see several errors are reported to Console which suggest a communication problem with EWS, and in particular an "id" issue, ("id is malformed" and a illegal temporary id is being used online) though I have no idea what id this is, or whether I can influence it in any way. Here are three exemplars:

I finally called AppleCare again (after the first rep never got back to me), and we determined that somehow my Mail Rules had become corrupted. One of them (probably thanks to OmniFocus fiddling with my Mail rules) was caught in a loop that would keep repeating until it caused Mail to crash. I had to remove the "MessageRules.plist.backup" and "MessageRules.plist" files from my ~/Library/Mail folder, and then recreate all my rules, but that did the trick.

  • How to STOP Mail from launching at startup

I hate even posting this question because it seems like I'm missing something easy. I want to stop mail from launching at start-up because I now have entourage.
I can find how to TURN OFF mail and TURN ON entourage at start up.
    Mail: 2.1.3
    Entourage: 12.2.3

You're overlooking the obvious, as you suspected.
Go to System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items and remove Mail from that list. If you want Entourage to startup, add that to the list.
However, there's no good reason to use Entourage over Mail, especially because it stores all your mail in a single file, so if that file ever becomes corrupted (it will, at the worst possible time) all your mail is gone; it cannot be recovered.
Secondly, you shouldn't startup applications at launch, since that will slow down your startup time and can easily cause other problems before you even get the chance to do anything with the computer. If you need to use a program, launch it after the Finder has loaded completely.

  • How to stop Mail from downloading automatically even it is set not too

My mail programme preferences are set to download manually.
In advanced, the account is not 'included in automatically checking for new mail'
I use scripts to send mails after certain tasks are ready. Sometimes (randomly) mail all of a sudden downloads all mail.
Anybody know what could cause this?
How to stop it as I do not want it to download mail at all as I use an other programme for reading and writing mail.

    Hi Mulder
What you're describing doesn't make sense. Mail doesn't download mail if it's set to wait for a manual initiation.
    I know however...
But once that is check is initiated, any and all waiting mail will be downloaded.
    I know.
I've never heard of this happening before, to anyone. Unless your preferences are corrupted, which there's no indication of at this point, something else is triggering Mail to check for new email.
I never heard either, hence posting
But if you're using some other program for sending and receiving email, why would you have that account setup in Mail, as that would defeat the purpose of supposedly using that other program. If you really want to eliminate the possibility of this happening, you would need to delete that account in Mail, and backup the mail for that account before you delete it.
complex issue, but rather keep both programmes.
Otherwise, we need more details, including which version of Mac OS X you're running, and the other program that you're using for email.
    OS 10.5.5
    Mail 3.5
    other programme Entourage
