How to stop MBP mid 2010 having lots of Kernel Panics?

I got my first MBP in mid 2010...by that time it was the high end 15' MBP (Processor  2.66 GHz Intel Core i7, Memory  4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3, Graphics  NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M 512 MB). After 4-5 months of purchasing it I started having a lot of crashes out of the blue (so called Kernel Panic). First, I thought it was related to the iDVD app, but later it was crashing randomly. At Apple Store they formatted the computer, repaired permissions and all that kind of stuff, no luck. After that Apple made a complete restoration of the entire system, no luck. Apple then changed the HD, no luck. Then they said it should be something on the logic board, but the store manager was kindly enough to replace the laptop for a completely new one!!! After Mavericks came out (might be just a coincidence) I started having crashes again. At first, they were very rare so I didn't care that much. However, it started to crash all the time that make it impossible to work with (5 times in a row). I decided to take the computer to an Apple authorised repair shop. After running all the tests they told me that the HD data cable and also the HD was failing. Replaced it all by myself, which was very easy, installed OS 10.9.5 and guess what? Still crashing...I tried all sorts of tests: 1) Run the OS from an external HD, crashes! 2) reinstall the system many times, crashes! 3) I did not install any third party apps, still crashes!....and no luck whatsoever....as a matter of fact it crashes most frequently with Safari app previous ones and now the 7.1 version. After researching I noticed that this model might have a problem with the graphics (which was no detected in the Apple authorised repair shop, cause I asked the representative many times about it)... After all this, I guess the problem could be a bug with Mavericks (but that could be just a coincidence) or this MBP model was destined to suffer from this and it is just a matter of "when" it will happen (maybe poor graphics?). I'm felling frustrated and hopeless....Any thoughts to stop this problem will be much appreciated. Thanks,

Thanks in advance for any help! I hope I got right all the info you requested. There you go:

  • Anyone having lots of kernel panics?  I am.

Within the last hour my MacBook has kernel paniced about 10 times when either starting up, trying to launch an app like System Prefs, clicking on the Spotlight icon,...
The machine worked perfectly for a week and a half. Nothing was installed recently...i did however attach my Nikon CoolPix 2100 for the first time today, but it seemed to be just fine with that.
    Anyone else experiencing kernel panics?

Kernel Panics can be caused by all sorts of problems, I had a widget that was continually trying to monitor fan RPM - however this feature was incompatible with Intel Macs, and as a result would cause the machine to crash for no reason.
You will find a log file in /Library/Logs/ called "panic.log" - this may give you some clues as to what is causing the problem. If you're stuck, post that log in this thread and we'll try to assist you further.

  • Lots of Kernel panics - Mountain Lion - MBP MID 2011

I have Installed three times mountain lion, one installation from lion, one from leoppard and now i've installed from scratch. In all of the intallations I'm having lots of Kernel Panics and crashes from Mountain Lion, the crashes aren't the same, so I couldn't find out what is doing this. On Lion It was perfect.
I'm going to put one exemple of kernel panic below:

    Thanks!

Could be the crash of this time, but in the previous crashes I didn't have installed.

My MBP mid 2010 display blackout and froze while working but my keyboard light will still light up. Won't be able to retrieve it and have to hard shutdown. Sometimes it happens a lot. Wether it connected to power or not, it will blackout on and off. Please advice what shall I do.

Do you have a 15" mid-2010? If so then your problem is surely...
Mid-2010 15" MacBook Pros - the bad NVIDIA GPU
If you're having frequent kernel panics with your 15" mid-2010, or intermittent screen problems, the problem is, more than likely, the faulty NVIDIA GPU found in a number of those machines.
Here's just a sample of a kernel panic log that points to the faulty NVIDIA card:
Kernel Extensions in backtrace (with dependencies):

Here's the "official" Apple take on the issue - but the very real kernel panics need not be preceded by 'Intermittent black screen or loss of video'... in fact, you might not experience any video problems at all. Although video problems can certainly be a portent of things to come…
So what can you do? Print out a copy of your kernel panic and a copy of the Knowledge Base article and take them, along with your machine, to your local Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. The unfortunate thing is that many people have passed the “three years from date of purchase” now and Apple is not honoring the free logic board replacement for many users. Some dealers seem to be making some exceptions for those past the three year mark, but don’t count on it…
    Good luck,
    Clinton

  • Can I system restore a purchased mbp mid 2010 but keep the upgraded OS?

I purchased a used MBP mid 2010 and had the seller meet me at the apple store. After I verified the computer was not stolen I asked to have it factory wiped, but they said I needed an appointment. Now I've read directions on this forum on how to restore it myself, is it the same technique they use in the store? Can I restore this machine and keep mavericks or must it be restored to the original OS?

    fastcash124,
when Mavericks is downloaded from the Mac App Store, it is non-transferable; the seller should have wiped it from the internal drive before selling it to you. Once you’ve done a clean reïnstallation of Snow Leopard and run Software Update to get it to Mac OS X 10.6.8, you can then download and install your own (non-transferable) copy of Mavericks from the Mac App Store.

  • MBP mid 2010 - 15" 2,4Ghz (Battery Problem)

    Hi guys.
I have a MBP mid 2010. My battery wont last more that 4.30 hours.
I have tried more than enough times to test' it.
Last Night with fully charged battery I was able to get 4.40 Hours.
    Bluetooth OFF
    Low monitor brightness
    Low keyboard illumination
    Air Port was on.
Basically web browsing and 4 or 5 youtube videos.
Did not make any software instalation or updates.
4.30 hours its just to low.
BTW it as 37 full charges
My work laptop wich is a Dell Latitude E6400 with a 9cell battery I get more than 5 hours. And it as way more full charge cycles.

Certainly not... but I'd rather source a complete antiglare clamshell lid and slap it on myself thus upgrading the machine, as long as I know I wouldn't have to replace the logic board as well... I've done plenty of surgery on notebooks, from removing a stuck business-card shaped CD from a 12" PowerBook G4 (requiring *complete* disassembly of the machine) to swapping ThinkPad T61 motherboards into T60 chassis creating a 15" 4:3 IPS FrankenPad which can take 8GB of ram... so I can handle swapping a display.
Local apple store hasn't told me clearly whether or not it's possible, just that they will only replace it with the original screen...
I can only find one logic board part # for a 2.4GHz mid-2010 15" MBP, which suggests to me that upgrading the screen should be no problem, but I'd love to hear from someone who's done it or can give a definitive answer as to whether or not it's possible...

  • HT204032 Why is Powernap not available for other MB's such as the MBP mid 2010 model for example?

Why is Powernap not available for other MB's such as the MBP mid 2010 model for example?

I have a 2010 MBP 6,2 with an aftermarket SSD. My machine gets mail and notifications while asleep, but I do not have any powernap pref box in energy savings under 10.9.1
I do not have an Apple SSD. I have a Crucial M4-CT512M4SSD2
Apple did replace my MB last Fall under the video fault problem (for free after 3 years.....thanks Apple), but it stills identifies as a 6,2  Boot ROM  MBP61.0057.B0F
I wish I could shut off this powernap feature, but have no access to it.

  • My mbp (mid 2010) is running extremely slow after installing some mavericks updates on May 22nd.

My mbp (mid 2010) is running extremely slow after installing some mavericks updates on May 22nd. Earlier I thought this behavior is due to spotlight indexing but it finished after 3 days. I deleted all caches from library. But no luck, still running extremely slow. I checked activity monitor for cpu usage, it shows above 90% is idle. The memory usage always shows PM - 4 GB, Memory Used 3.96 GB, VM - 4 GB, Swaped used 0 bytes, App Memory 1.82 GB, File Cache 1.44 GB, Wired Memory 480 MB.
    Thanks in adavnce for help.

Was it the combo updater that was installed or the OS X 10.9.3 update. There is a difference.
MORE INFO ON WHY RUNNING COMBO FIXES ISSUES
Apple updates available from the Software Update application are incremental updates. Delta updates are also incremental updates and are available from Apple Downloads (software updates are generally smaller than delta updates). The Combo updates contain all incremental updates and will update files that could have become corrupted.
Combo updaters will install on the same version as they're applying--no need to roll back or do a clean install. So if you think you've got a borked 10.8.4 install from a regular update, just run the 10.8.4 Combo Updater on that system.
"Delta" updaters can only take you from one version to the next. For example: 10.9.1 to 10.9.2. If somehow the 10.9.2 is missing something it should have, and that something isn't changed between 10.9.1 and 10.9.2 it will still be stale after the delta update.

  • My MBP Mid 2010 with 1066mhz 8gb ram freezes and restarts while using safari. Any help?

Hi! I use MBP mid 2010. I upgraded my ram to 8gb 1066 mhz as per apple instructions. I run mountain lion. Everytime I watch a videoclip on youtube, it just freezes or mostly just turns off and restarts. I tried erasing disk twice but still same problem.

Corsair has two part numbers regarding 8GB 1066MHz DDR3 RAM.
See image below - first image is for non Apple notebook/laptop - second image is for Macbook and Macbook Pro.
    Which RAM did you buy?

  • After ML upgrade, MBP mid 2010 crashes or freezes when connecting/disconnecting apple cinema display, specially when is put to sleep.

After upgrading to ML, when I connect my MBP mid 2010 to my Cinema Display system crashes, if I close the mac to put it to sleep, it freezes, if I pull the power cord and then disconnect the cinema display,  it freezes to black.
Bottom line... MBP + ML + Cinema Display = Useless aluminum can.
    Any Help??? .... Please????

I have exactly the same problem.  I found that unplugging the Cinema display (both from the MB and power) and re-connecting did exactly nothing, but that the MS Windows solution works:  Reboot your machine.
Note:  the problem comes up when the display sleeps, not the computer.
We are really making progress here with the evolution of OSX!  NOT!

  • Awful lot of Kernel Panics after 10.5.2 Update

I have been getting an awful lot of kernel panics on my macbook when doing intensive stuff. It seems to have started after the 10.5.2 update. It usually happens when importing photos into iPhoto, playing BASIC, (i mean really basic, like iSpy) Games, working in iMovie, or scrolling through photos in full screen. What could be causing this? It seems like a few seconds before it panics stuff slows down, becomes laggy, and CPU usage goes to around 60%. Temp is between 130* and 160*F. I do not think it is normal for the 'puter to panic when it slows down, but I may be wrong. I am having around 2-3 per week. Any help will be appreciated and awarded points.
    Thanks,
    KANE

    That's a really nice list.
Sounds like something is screwing around with memory and that's causing the panic. See what's running. Though modern memory management is much better, there are still problems when programs hold memory, don't release memory, try to claim unavailable memory, etc.

Select them. CTRL- or RIGHT-click on the selection and click on the Move To Trash option. Do not attempt to drag them to the Trash. You may be asked to enter your admin password. Once you have removed them you have to restart the computer. I would then follow instructions below to be sure you have removed everything associated with the software:
    Uninstalling Software: The Basics
Most OS X applications are completely self-contained "packages" that can be uninstalled by simply dragging the application to the Trash.  Applications may create preference files that are stored in the /Home/Library/Preferences/ folder.  Although they do nothing once you delete the associated application, they do take up some disk space.  If you want you can look for them in the above location and delete them, too.
Some applications may install an uninstaller program that can be used to remove the application.  In some cases the uninstaller may be part of the application's installer, and is invoked by clicking on a Customize button that will appear during the install process.
Some applications may install components in the /Home/Library/Applications Support/ folder.  You can also check there to see if the application has created a folder.  You can also delete the folder that's in the Applications Support folder.  Again, they don't do anything but take up disk space once the application is trashed.
Some applications may install a startupitem or a Log In item.  Startupitems are usually installed in the /Library/StartupItems/ folder and less often in the /Home/Library/StartupItems/ folder.  Log In Items are set in the Accounts preferences.  Open System Preferences, click on the Accounts icon, then click on the LogIn Items tab.  Locate the item in the list for the application you want to remove and click on the "-" button to delete it from the list.
Some software use startup daemons or agents that are a new feature of the OS.  Look for them in /Library/LaunchAgents/ and /Library/LaunchDaemons/ or in /Home/Library/LaunchAgents/.
If an application installs any other files the best way to track them down is to do a Finder search using the application name or the developer name as the search term.  Unfortunately Spotlight will not look in certain folders by default.  You can modify Spotlight's behavior or use a third-party search utility, Easy Find, instead.  Download Easy Find at VersionTracker or MacUpdate.
Some applications install a receipt in the /Library/Receipts/ folder.  Usually with the same name as the program or the developer.  The item generally has a ".pkg" extension.  Be sure you also delete this item as some programs use it to determine if it's already installed.

  • How can I back up my files during a Kernel Panic?

Hello, I am new to these forums.
Okay, so last week I updated my Macbook Pro like I normally do (I'm assuming it was 10.5.7), but then when I restarted my macbook I saw the apple logo and then the screen turned grey and a bunch of numbers and letters filled the screen (which I now know is a Kernel Panic or something).
I am unable to login at all or even see the log-in screen, all I can get to is the apple logo when I first turn on the computer. I plan on making an appointment at my local apple store, but they told me to back up any files I didn't want to lose.
    So my question is...
How can i back up my files during a Kernel Panic if I can't even log in?
I have my original disks from when I got my macbook pro if that's any help?
Should I just tell my local apple store that I need help backing up my files?
    or am I screwed?
    Thanks for any help

Well, when I turn it on a box appears over the apple logo and says something like "please restart your machine or hold the power button for 7 seconds".
and the numbers and letters appear random to someone like me but I'm sure it says something to someone who knows about it. At the very beginning of the "random" numbers and letter it says something about kernel and panic and I googled some of the message and it kept leading me to other people who said it was a kernel panic.
Also I tried to start it while holding shift and it never goes to single user mode it just does the same thing as if I never pushed or held shift. I'll try the whole firewire thing if I can figure it out, but I don't have another mac so I'd have to do it with a PC.
Edit: Also I did one of those hardware tests using the osx dvd and the short test said i have an error (and when i googled that error it brought me to people with kernel panics) but when I did the extended test that took about an hour and a half it came back saying everything was fine.

  • 15" MBP Mid-2010 (6,2) SMC 1.7 Broke my MBP

    Hi All,
My beloved 15" Mid 2010 MacBook Pro is not well and is sitting on life support and is only barely amongst the living.  On the 23rd Feb 2013 I noticed the SMC 1.7 firmware update in my AppStore App (this firmware was released on the 13th of Feb if I can recall correctly) and unfortunately I clicked install.
The update started to install and then stated that my Battery should be charged (it was 100%) and power plugged in (it was) and requested a reboot to which I clicked yes.  Started rebooting and installing the firmware and rebooted once or twice automatically and then after the final reboot, screen black and no Apple Power boot sound.  I left it for 5mins and then thought ok, maybe its powered down.  Pressed the Bower button and all I could hear was the CD-Rom powering and no display and no sound.  I tried the PRAM reset, SMC reset but nothing. The following day I took it to our only Apple Center (Live in Windhoek,Namibia) in the Country. The next day they phoned and said that my Logic Board is faulty. I told them that my MBP was perfect until the stupid SMC update.  They told me that I can leave a kidney and a peace of my liver as for the repair costs will be something like US$900 or I could buy a second hand Logic Board for something like US$500.
This is a no go for me as for all was fine up until the SMC update came through. As for I had nothing to loose now anymore, I opened the MBP and removed the Battery and with the power cord disconnected and holding the Power Button for a couple of seconds and while holding the Power Button, connecting the power cord and after a few seconds releasing the Power Button again, my MBP started up.  Problem now is that my Fans run 100% and the keyboard backlight is dead and the battery does not charge nor is seen by the MBP.  I can now switch it off an back on and my MBP will power up and boot into OSX.  If I do a SMC reset (holding shift control option while pressing power button), I am back where I started - MBP not power on, but battery charges again etc.  Doing the whole battery removal again with power button pressing and only then connecting the power cord, it starts again.
After booting into OSX, I had a look at my system profiler and now see that the SMC version is 1.70f6 and as per this page http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1237 , my version should have flash 1.58f17 - Seems like there was a bug in Apple's SMC 1.7 Firmware code it it thought that my 15"MBP was a 17"MBP and now my SMC does not talk propperly with my hardware it seeems.  I maild the Apple Guys here in Windhoek about my findings and asked them to get in contact with the Apple Geniouses overseas to find out if they could downgrade the SMC again or if they have a fix, but they don't want to help and just sayed I must have a look on www.apple.com/support and downloads and search for my SMC version and install.
That does not work as for the packages just say its not for my version - well my version is not for my MBP!
Is there maybe somebody that can help me or should I just throw my MBP away, of maybe wait 2 years in hope that another SMC version will come out that will load the propper SMC code onto my MBP?  Please Guys and Girls out there - any manual way maybe of forcing a SMC firmware downgrade or reapplying the propper code of version 1.7?
    Please and keeping fingers crossed.
    Mark

Ok, it has now been three months since the last SMC 1.7 firmware update broke my mid-2010 15” MacBook Pro and having had it at two different Apple “Certified” technical centers and both told me that there is nothing that Apple can do except for replacing the Logic Board for something like US$ 500.  I was not going to pay that amount for a 2010 MacBook to have its LogicBoard replaced so I unfortunately went out and bought a new MacBook Pro last month.  Why unfortunately .............  BECAUSE I MANAGED TO FIX MY OLD MBP :-)
As of yesterday,  I personally see a Apple “Genius” on the same level as the Petrol Attendants here in Africa that fill up your car!  They know you need fuel to be able to drive your car, but that is where their knowledge or drive to figure something out stops.  Ok, I am still very upset of having to fork out so much money for nothing.  And yes, I do not like Apple personnel anymore, but I cannot live without my Apple machine (that is why I bought another when my old one was thought of being pushing up daisies).
I only managed to do this as for I had a brick lying around and I could not live with the idea that nothing can be done by recovering or downgrading the SMC firmware except for replacing the LogicBoard.  I can also not imagine that Apple Personnel do NOT have a low level firmware recovery tool for the MBP 2010 and above models.
Ok, how did I fix it? By pure luck and by putting 1 and 1 together and getting 11 and not two :-)
If you happen to have a SMC firmware update that went bad on your machine, in my case the SMC 1.7 has three models SMC updates in one file and it loaded the wrong version onto my MacBook Pro, you can try the following:
    Symptom:
MacBook Pro does not want to power up.  You can only hear the CDRom making some noise and screen stays black and MBP powers off again.
Do this only if there is no other way around and when our of Warranty.  Do this at your own risk.
    The Fix:
    Disconnect power
Open MBP and disconnect/remove the battery - close the back cover again
While power is still disconnected, press and hold the power button for about 5 seconds and then while pressing and holding the power button, connect the power cable to the MBP.
If you are lucky, your MBP will now power up with the fans blazing at 100% and keyboard backlight will be off.  This seems to be a recovery emergency mode or something.  If you MBP did not power up, try again. If your MBP does not power up then you have a different problem and don’t need to continue the following steps.
Boot you OSX and go onto the Internet and Download the right SMC firmware version for your MBP from: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1237
Mount/Open the .dmg file and copy out the “Firmware”.pkg file.
Use Pacifist or the command line to extract the content of the .pkg file.
In my case the Apple SMC update had three models firmware in  the .pkg file and the correct one for the Mid-2010 15” model was in the folder SMC18 or something.  Find your correct model firmware for your MBP and copy out the following two files:  SmcFlasher.efi and 2010MBP15.smc  (the 2010MBP15.smc will be different for other MBP models)
Copy those two files onto the OSX disk drive to a location that you can remember like /User/username/Dowloads/smc  or where ever.
Google and search for rEFIt .  This is a boot loader app the will take over the boot process when you start up your MBP to enable you to go into a shell utility.  Read up on how to install and how to activate the refit utility.  When installed and enabled, the next time you reboot your MBP you will see the utility start up before your OSX boots.
If you see the rEFIt utility start after you rebooted the MBP, use the arrow on your keyboard and select shell and press enter.  The shell.efi utility will start to boot in a “DOS” like window and after you see something where it wants to configure or setup something, just press ESC to cancel that.
After the util booted, you need to first change to your internel disk with the command “ fs1:”  that is F S ONE Colon then Enter, standing for filesystem 1
Now you can change to the folder to where you copied the two firmware files like :
    cd Users
    cd username
    cd Downloads
    cd smc
There are different ways of going to the folder or find the place where you put the files.
After finding the folder with the two files you can start the update process.
First need to get the SMC into the right state
    SmcFlasher.efi -reset 1
Your MBP fans should now quiet down.
    Lets Flash :-)
    SmcFlasher.efi -force -LoadApp 2010MBP15.smc -norestart
Your SMC should now be flashing with the right version.  Once done, power down the MBP. Power the MBP back on and do a SMC reset and all should be fine now.  You can now connect the battery again and start using your MBP.
Hope this helps somebody.  No Warranty and this is done AT OWN RISK!
