How to stop MBP with Retina from logging out when HDMI plugged in?

When I plug in my TV to the new HDMI out port on the MBP +Retina, the screen turns blue (like it used to on my Mac Air), the resolution changes, but then when the sceen comes back I am at the login screen. Not only am I logged out, but all my apps that were open were crashed (not quit).
Anybody experience this? How do I fix it?
Thanks!
Daniel

You're not alone.  For me ther'es no HDMI in use, it happens when it's not connected to anything.  At first I had thought it was tied into VLC since it happened consistently there at first, but for the last week it's been happening anytime, no VLC running.  I'm trying to track it down as well so while I have no resolution yet, at least you know you're not alone.  VERY frustrating since I do a lot of file work and hate it when it does this part way through a 20GB file copy...

  • How to stop the option key from changing tools when trying to subtract from a selection?

How to stop the option key from changing my tools when I am trying to subtract from a selection?
I'm running CS3 on Mac OS Leopard, and the automatic tool switching slows me down, but even preferences doesn't show a way to turn this off.
    Thanks for your help.

With any marquee tool, JUST holding down the option key should not switch tools. You need to explain the problem much more carefully, It's completely impossible to tell from your description whats going wrong.
    automatic tool switching
The only preference related to this, is to do with the SHIFT KEY - "use Shift key for tool switch".

  • Known freshly set firmware password, not being accepted on new MBP with retina. Locked out of bootmenu.

    Hello,
I have a MBP 15" with retina display and 16GB of RAM.
I bought it end August/early september and it has worked great so far, really happy with it.
After encountering some people that have had theirs stolen, i figured it was a good idea to enter a firmware password so that people can't use external drives to boot up from.
I just rebooted holding the alt key, clicked utilities -> firmware password and I set myself a password. It is one word, starts with a capital letter and has 2 numbers incorporated in it.
I then immediately rebooted and held alt again to test it. I enter the exact same password (100% sure) and for some reason it just deletes the entered password when i click enter/the ok arrow and it does nothing.......
Please tell me this is a known MAC problem, I am 100% sure i'm not going mad, but this kind of problem is annoying me! I have a dualboot windows 7 partition that I would like to continue to use without working virtually from within MAC OS X.
    Thanks, any ideas appreciated!
    Best regards,
    Nick

    Sigh i found it ....
Apple you could have mentioned that you enter it as QWERTY instead of AZERTY -_- My letters were coincidently all the same, however the numbers need shift pressed in the latter which they don't in the former.
Oh well, Back to enjoying my wonderful machine now
Bye and sorry for the unnecessary read! Hope it helps some with the same problem.

  • How do I prevent downloading messages from timing out when a large file is attached to an incoming mail?

When an incoming message has a sizable attachment (say ~1 MB or more), I have to click manually on Get Messages many times before it finally downloads. Until I get lucky, the software seems to allow a period of about 30 seconds (I haven't clocked it) until it quits trying to download new messages. And until the message with the large attachment finally downloads, all other incoming messages are clogged behind it and can't get through. How do I adjust settings to prevent timing out or increase the time-out limit substantially to work around this difficulty? If there's no fix, I'll have to give up on Thunderbird and go directly to the provider website to get e-mail.

Is there any way you could get such attachments sent to you otherwise, such as file sharing? Thunderbird has a feature to address this, [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/filelink-large-attachments Filelink], in case the sending party is using Thunderbird it may be useful to let them know about.
Are you using POP or IMAP? Either way many settings can fine tune this, in different ways, please add this information so we can provide a more detailed answer.

  • How to stop Adobe flash Player from automatically opening when I start google browser

Whenever I open any google browsers i.e. Chrome or google, the Adobe flash player automatically starts.  I want to know is there any settings I can unclick that will stop it from opening automatically.  I want to have the control of when to start flash player.

Having just solved this irritating issue, two steps are required to stop Chrome running audio or video automatically, but still allow it to run on request:
1 Go to chrome://plugins/ and uncheck the 'Always allowed' box for the offending plug-ins - Adobe Flashplayer, Quicktime etc
2 Go to chrome://settings/content, scroll to the Plug-ins section and change the default 'Run automatically (recommended)' to 'Click to play'
Now when you open a page with audio or video content, it'll be greyed-out with a jigsaw icon, which you can click to run.

  • Is it possible to stop a MacBook from logging out when you close it?

My MacBook Pro often locks up and has to be restarted when I open and close it. It seems like whatever triggers it to turn on when you open it doesn't always work. The easy answer is probably to keep it open, but it constantly gets closed out of habbit. Any suggestions?

Have you tried the various options in System Preferences > Energy Saver? (Never is an option)
I'd only try that though while it is connected to a power source, or your battery will drain needlessly.

What do I need to do to keep my computer from shutting down each time I plug in my iphone?

        Hello goldeeneyes!
I'd love to tell you how to adjust your screen settings. Keep in mind that a longer screen timeout may drain your battery significantly, so you may wish to change it back when you are not using your knitting application.
Please go to Settings>Display and change the Sleep to a longer period of time. Happy creating!

  • I'd like to know how much performance difference there is in the 15 in MBP with Retina display?

    Hi:
I have a legacy (2007) MBP that needs to be replaced. It still runs, but not well, given that the HD is nearly full.  The headphone out jack is "hit or miss" in terms of working properly.....you get the picture.
I'll replace it with a 15 MBP with retina display, and also go with the 1 TB drive rather than the 512 as its actually cheaper (I think) to have Apple put the larger drive in than upgrade after the fact.
My question relates to the available processor speeds:
2.5GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.7GHz
2.8GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 4.0GHz
Is there any discernible difference between these processors, and if so,  under what conditions do they manifest themselves, and how significant, generally speaking are the differences.
I'm sure it depends on the software being run and tasks being performed....video rendering, gaming, etc.
I should also mention that I'm not the most patient person (serious understatement) when it comes to the speed of even basic tasks....word processing, itunes, youtube videos, and the like.
I generally work with multiple windows open and with my current computer's age and remaining HD space get the "spinning pinwheel of death" with great frequency.
One last bit of information. I'm a musician and composer, who needs to get into the 21st century and actually use the notation software I've got (Sibelius).  Any computer I have needs to be able to play back scores well, which means playing/processing multiple instrumental parts at the same time,
Thanks in advance for your advice,
    Michael

The only way you can get a valid estimate is by someone examining the MBP directly.  Since no one on these forums can see or examine your MBP, you will need to get this infomation from a qualified repair shop.  It seems that you already have secured one estimate.  You can also bring the MBP to an Apple store and have a genius bar examine it for FREE.
    Ciao.

    Frank ...
Make sure to quit all open applications before logging out.
Your proflie indicates your Mac has v10.7.1 installed.
If that is the case, updating your system software will help as far as functionaly as well as security.
Install the OS X Lion Update 10.7.5 (Client Combo)
    Then restart your Mac.

  • How to clean an MBP with Retina Display

I have a Sept 2012 MBP with Retina Display that I want to sell. How should I clean it to ensure the buyer does not have any access to my personal data?

Thanks. If I did the following:
"Once you have backed up all your stuff, restart in Recovery Mode by holding down theCommand R keys prior to the chime. Go past the languages select screen, if it pops up, select Disk Utility (bottom choice). Click on the Macintosh HD volume to select on the left column, do an Erase".
And when the buyer turns it on for the first time, he will be guided through the initial set up process, as if he is setting it up for the first time right out of the box?
Secondly, this MBP backs up automatically to a Time Machine, will any of the data be affected there? Once I sell this?

  • Stop MBP from logging out

I can't seem to stop my MacBook Pro from logging itself out after 30 minutes of inactivity. Obviously, I have tried unchecking the box "log off after 30 minutes of inactivity" under 'Security and Privacy' -> 'Advanced', but this does not help - or only for a little while. The box keeps checking itself (and setting itself back to the default time of 30 minutes - I have also tried to change that) and my computer keeps logging itself out. It's very annoying and I haven't been able to find any solutions for it on fora like these. Hope somebody has an idea!
    I have a Late 2013 MacBook Pro running on OS X Yosemite, 2,4 GHz Intel Core i5, 8 GB 1600 MHz DD3

This seems to be the problem! The MacBook was provided to me by my employer. I can see under "Profiles" that they changed the login settings about a month ago (see screenshot). I will contact the IT-department and see what I can do about it - it's a really very annoying setting, given that I am the only one using this computer.
Many thanks for the quick help!

  • High end MBP 15" or low end MBP with retina display?

I am having trouble deciding between the two laptops so I wanted to get some opinions.
I use photoshop and dreamweaver a lot. I ususally will have tons of applications/tabs open at the same time, including a lot of pages with different video players. I use iMovie at most once per month. I do like to plug in multiple displays through the thunderbolt ports so having 2 and an hdmi port would be nice. It mainly comes down to is the macbook pro with retina worth losing .3Ghz per core on the retina. To fix the memory (not RAM) I figured when necessary I would just get a thunderbolt external hard drive. And finally how much more space would the OSX and/or a program take up with so many more pixels. I also need this computer to last a while because I will most likely have to wait more than 4 years to update, but I can upgrade the ram of the mbp with retina display later to 16gb, but the macbook pro 15 has a 3.6ghz processor. Once again if i need more space I will just get a thunderbolt external drive. So could I please have some oppinions on what I should chose?

Even my 2011 MBP can take 16 GB RAM.  I would be VERY surprised if the 2012 model cannot handle 16 GB RAM once macsales.com and crucial.com test enough of the available RAM types to find the most-compatible type.  Apple advertises limitations based on testing with "commonly available" parts.  2x8 GB RAM chips are still around $150, so Apple probably did not test them.  But only time (and those willing to test with their brand-new units) will prove that.
As to the actual increase is speed from the extra 0.3, I would not hazard a guess because you will run a very specific set of software under a very specific CPU and GPU (graphics processing unit) load.  But I would suspect the Retina unit will run faster than the non-Retina IF you buy a non-Retina with a HDD instead of the SDD.  SDD will outperform HDD in most cases.
My humple opinion, Retina units are lighter and lack utility ports.  But they have the quad-core CPUs people want and more display-ports.  Those who program computers will likely buy the non-Retina units.  Those who play with pictures will buy the Retina units.

  • Anyone any advice on how to stop my mail "activity" from continuously caching? is this a problem? I have had inbox issues recently that are not resolved yet but I am not sure if they are related.

Anyone any advice on how to stop my mail "activity" from continuously caching? is this a problem? I have had inbox issues recently that are not resolved yet but I am not sure if they are related.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope Index
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A Finder window will open with a file selected. Move the selected file to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have names that begin with "Envelope Index". Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is corrupt and that Mail has to quit. Click OK.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the file you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.
