  • How to stop Microsoft Office from reopening old irrelevant documents automatically?

Ever since upgrading to Mavericks, whenever I open Microsoft Word or Excel, old irrelevant documents (apparently the ones that happened to be open at the time I upgraded) automatically open. I'm using Office 2011 v14.4.3. I saw a number of posts about this nuisance behavior under Lion, but it didn’t happen to me until Mavericks, and the fixes discussed on those posts don't seem to apply to Mavericks.
Note that in System Preferences I have the "Close windows when quitting an application" box checked. I've also cleared the Recent Documents lists in Excel and Word, to no avail.
To keep seeing the same Office documents from years ago every time I open an Office application, and having to close them manually each time, is a serious nuisance!
    Is there a fix???

I am having the same problem. Whenever I re-open Word after restarting my computer, all of yesterday's documents reopen.
I have the "close windows when quitting an application" box (System Preferences -> General) checked - it has always been checked, and does not solve this problem.
It's intensely frustrating to wait for Word to open ten documents and then re-close them all before being able to work.

  • How to stop my 4S from automatically taking hundreds of photos.

How to stop my 4S from automatically taking hundreds of photos.  I use an otterbox and I think the buttons get pushed when I put it into the belt clip.  Can I disable the side buttons for the camera?  I currently have 1.958 photos of my belt that I am deleting one at a time.  Help on how to tag and deleted belt photos would be helpful.

As you already know, open camera roll - edit - then select the pictures then trash.

  • How to STOP OS X from automatically changing between language input methods

I want to know if there is a way in OS X Leopard to stop the system from automatically changing the language input method. I use English and Japanese on my computer, but this would apply to anyone using more than one input method.
For example, when I click on a Japanese-language file, the system automatically changes input to Kotoeri (the Japanese-language input method). When I then click on an English-language file it usually, but not always, changes back to English input. But I almost never want to TYPE in Japanese. I just need to be able to read Japanese and to cut and paste from Japanese language files. It is very annoying when I start typing in an English-language file and find the input method has been changed to kotoeri without me realizing it—everything comes out in meaningless Japanese. When I want to type in Japanese, I want to manually change to the Japanese input system. That is, I want English to always be the default input method even if I am manipulating Japanese-language files.
So, I’m wondering if there’s a way to set the computer so that it never AUTOMATICALLY switches between the input methods. I want to be able to switch only manually. In the old days of System 7, 8, and 9, there was a third-party control panel you could get that would do this (I think it was called Stay There!) and I don't remember this being a problem in Tiger or earlier versions of OS X. Is anyone aware of any way to do this in Leopard?
    Thank you!
    Colin

Well, I do have it set that way, and I can look up there to see where I am, but in the work I do time is critical and I move back and forth between the two languages frequently. It is really a pain and a waste of time to have to look and make a change that should be unnecessary. The problem is not so much that I don't know where I am. It's that I don't want to ever have to think I MIGHT be in anything but English input unless I specifically want to be. In other words, I need to be able to forget about this problem even being a possibility.

  • In OS 10.7.5, after quitting on shutdown, how can I stop Firefox 23 from automatically opening on restart?

Before I shut down my computer, I quit all my open applications. This makes startup cleaner. But now, upon startup, Firefox 23 automatically opens...not Safari, not Mail, just new Firefox 23. This would seem to be the new default. Can I stop this behavior?

  • Stop Right Clicks from automatically Opening link in new tab?

So Normally I would right click a link, scroll down to "Open link in new tab" or "Open link in new Window" ect ect. But now, before I can choose which option I want (tab or window) it automatically opens the link up in a new tab. it does it for every single link... Even if I just want to copy a link (left click and highlight) it will automatically open the link up anyway.. How do I stop it from doing that?!?! It is extremely frustrating.. I don't want everything I right click to be opened in a new tab
Thank you ever so much for any help!

Tried in Safe mode already and the problem still occurs.. I recently re installed windows on my laptop, and the only ad ons I have is flash block, ad block and adobe flash player. I tried with all disabled, as well as disabling all the extensions.. still same issue..
I'm sorry this might have been important issue but I am using a USB mouse. the touchpad/clicker on my laptop works normally.. I can right click with the touch pad and it gives me options instead of automatically opening it.. could it be an issue withe the USB mouse? Ive never had issuse with it before I re-installed windows. the usb ports are kept clean and the mouse has fresh batteries..

  • How can I disable Firefox from automatically opening on system startup on my Mac - unchecking the "open at login" does not work?

We have Firefox 10.o on our Macbook Pro OS X 10.5.8. I prefer using Firefox as my browser but my husband prefers Safari for now because of a long history of bookmarks and saved information he doesn't have time to re-do. He is tired of Firefox automatically opening when we start up the laptop, and even when we uncheck the "open at login" it still opens at login every time. He is about to uninstall it because of this. How can we disable? It does NOT show up in our account on the Mac OS as an application that starts at login, so we can't disable it there.

For those of you running Windows, I found this on another site. (Unfortunately, not before getting totally disgusted and switching to chrome.)
    1. click start (or the windows flag button at the bottom left) 2. in the "search programs and files" or the RUN dialog box, enter "msconfig.exe" or "msconfig". 3. That should open the system configuration program. 4. click the "Startup" tab at the top of the opened program. 5. Under the "startup item" column, look for Mozilla firefox. 6. uncheck that one. 7. Click OK or apply. 8. click "exit without restart". 9. you're good to go.

  • Is there a way to stop downloaded files from automatically opening?

When I download unarchived image files through a web browser (eg: from yousendit) they automatically open up in Preview.app. I thought this was an annoying Preview thing so I changed my .tif and .jpg files to open with Photoshop...which now launches and opens the downladed files. Is there a way to supress this behavior?

If you're using Safari as your web browser go to "Safari -> Preferences...", select "General" from the toolbar and uncheck the "Open safe files after downloading" box.
Other browsers should have a similar setting in their prefs.

  • Stopping Instant Messages from Automatically Opening

    Hi,
Since I work with an office full of people, friends will ichat me and at times, the content may not be suitable for everyone's eyes...
Is there a way that I can do something that stops the chat window to open up and perhaps just blink in the dock when there is a new message?
I tried selecting my buddines and going into the "INFO" box to edit the EVENTS. For the MESSAGE RECEIVED and TEXT INVITATION, I selected the box "Bounce icon in the Dock and to Repeat, but it still opens up the whole window so that other people can read what they write...
    Thanks!
    PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4)   Linksys Router WRT54G

If you have the application hide (apple key + h) the entire application is hidden. You'll hear the alert (if set) when you get a new message, and the icon should bounce.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to stop iphone 4 from automatically download iOS6 update to your phone?

I would like to know how to stop the automatic update of iOS6 download directly to my iphone 4 without me telling it to go ahead and download it.  It's so sneaky, it keeps automatically downoading the update (2+GB) and take up that same amount of space on my iphone once I charge it to full power.  And it will stay like that along with me losing 2+GB of space to apple unless I install the update.
However, I refuse to install the update when it doesn't have google map, youtube apps and still having problem with wifi connection and data overusage due to some unknown bug and not the customer using it.  I have reseted my iphone 3 times back to the original factory setting so I can reclaim that 2GB storage space and keep my iOS5 already, but everytime I did that, it would just redownloaded the update again without asking for my confirmation after I charge the phone to full power.  Is there anyway to stop this insanity?  I don't want to do hard reset/activate phone again and again just to rid of this automatic download.  It's wasting my time, my storage space and my bandwidth....and I do not have unlimited storage space.  Please help!!!

I would disable wifi before plugging it in to charge.  Eventually, you will need to update as only the current version of IOS will be supported.
