How to switch from iPhoto to Adobe Lightroom.

Question: I would like to start using Lightroom as my photo editing software but up until now all my photos have been stored on my iMac and in iPhoto. I am tearing my hair out trying to figure out how to 1) transfer my iPhoto library to an external hard drive and then 2) transfer that to Lightroom. I’ve been reading about this on the Web but am skeptical of trying to do it myself.
Find out the answers to these two questions in Eduardo Angel's new article, where he explains how to easily transfer your iPhoto library to an external device and then import into any version of Adobe Lightroom in 3 simple steps.

Sorry - this is an iPhoto forum - for Elements support you neede to use an elements forum
To get your photos out of iPhoto you export them (file menu ==> export)

  • How to switch from Creative Suite CS6 & Lightroom 5.3 to Photoshop CC?

I have Creative Suite CS6 and Lightroom 5.3 installed on my computer.  I just purchased the Photoshop CC.  How do I switch from CS6 & Lightroom to the CC apps?

    Hi Bill_EG_B,
You can directly install Photoshop CC following the instructions from the link: http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/install-apps.html.
Your existing Creative Suite installation will not be affected by installing the new CC applications. For example, you can install and use both Photoshop CS6 and Photoshop CC on the same computer.

  • Switching from iPhoto 08 to Lightroom 1.3

    Hello,
Im a new-comer to both photography and Lightroom and even to Apple, so please bear with me.
I have about 6k pictures that I dumped onto my newer iMac OS X v10.4 from various other old computers. There are many duplicates and bad pictures. There is no organization whatsoever. I imported all the pictures to iPhoto 08 before I decided to use Lightroom 1.3. Ive done very little work on them in iPhoto except that there are some newer pictures that are only in the iPhoto library that I need to access.
What I want to do now is import all my old pictures into Lightroom, and get my new pictures out of the iPhoto library. I also want to free up as much room as I can on my hard drive, so obviously I dont want all my pictures duplicated all over. So here is what I am thinking about doing:
    1. Clean up my picture folders as much as I can without spending a huge amount of time on it.
    2. Import into LR using the Copy Photos to a New Location option so I have a back up
    3. Export my newer pictures from iPhoto to folder so I can import those
    4. Organize and fix everything in LR till Im satisfied all is good
    5. Delete the original pictures from my hard drive using finder
    6. Delete all the pictures from iPhoto (will this really delete them and free up space or does still save the original?)
Am I on the right track? Do you have any tips or suggestion for me?
    Thank you very much!

    Sus-
Sounds right to me. If you really want to delete everything iPhoto, do so in the Finder, and trash the top folder. I did that, then re-ran iPhoto, and use it occasionally for smallish jpegs.
The only thing I didn't see was something like "backup LR catalog and images once I've culled, sorted, keyworded, etc. in LR".

You need Lightroom 5.5 or later (the most current version is 5.7.1). This is a free update if you have already purchased an earlier version of Lightroom 5.

  • Trying to use the plug in to switch from iPhoto to lightroom but all I get is a window that says "checking iPhoto library" Whats happening?

rying to use the plug in to switch from iPhoto to lightroom

    1. Back up your Library now. You don't use iPhoto to back it up, you can do it simply by dragging the iPhoto Library from the Pictures Folder to the External Disk
    2.
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • I am trying to chose an upgrade from iPhoto to either lightroom or photoshop elements 10

I am trying to chose an upgrade from iphoto to either lightroom or photoshope elements 10, and would appreciate any comments/advice
    Thanks for your time
    Sandy

Elements and LIghtroom are different categories of app. Elements is a pretty straight up editor. Lightroom is database driven photo manager with lossless processing. Simply, Lightoom would be the upgrade to iPhoto.
That said, there is no upgrade path from iPhoto to these apps. You will need to export from iPhoto to the Finder - a process that means you will lose something of the work you have done in iPhoto already.
If your reason for upgrading is to add editing power then you can use Elements as an extenral editor to iPhoto:
You can set Photoshop (or any image editor) as an external editor in iPhoto. (Preferences -> General -> Edit Photo: Choose from the Drop Down Menu.) This way, when you double click a pic to edit in iPhoto it will open automatically in Photoshop or your Image Editor, and when you save it it's sent back to iPhoto automatically. This is the only way that edits made in another application will be displayed in iPhoto.
If the Limitation you see in iPhoto is primarily photo managment then have a look at Aperture. Half the price of Lightroom, much better manager, complete with OS integration.
If you're shooting Raw then Lightroom or Aperture are the way to go.
You can set Elements as an external editor in either.

  • Move from iPhoto '11 to Lightroom using PS Elements to keep Events and Albums

I am trying to move from iPhoto '11 to Lightroom by using PS Elements as a go-between to keep events and album but it doesn't appear that the option to keep events and albums is possible using iPhoto '11.  However, the instructions for coming from iPhoto '09 show that option.  Is there any way to do this?

I’m not sure about that routine. I’m not even sure events are transferrable and there of lots of things that could go wrong. You may want to think about importing your masters directly into Ligtroom. From finder you need to be in Pictures (not the application) and control-click on iPhoto Library.
iPhoto will have created duplicates and hidden your originals. You need to find your masters from the iPhoto Library - Right-Click and select “Show Package Contents”
Older versions of iPhoto uses an Originals folder and in later versions; Masters. It’s not a good idea to go messing with the structure as it could corrupt the iPhoto Library. Apple has made this structure for good reason; so that you can always use the revert command to go back to an original, even if you have edited in iPhoto using cropping or red eye removal, for example.
However, if you have no further use for iPhoto, you could consider moving your originals/masters to a new folder structure (iPhoto automatically creates dated sub-folders) and then importing to Lightroom. Alternatively if you still need iPhoto, export duplicates to the desktop and bring those into Lightroom. That will keep iPhoto safe.
I do actually use iPhoto for creating events which can then be used to make cool slideshows within iPhoto. However Lightroom is my main management and photo editing tool and I have created an export pre-set for sending jpegs into iPhoto. I have even dragged the iPhoto Library off the hard drive to an external hard drive – but that means keeping it connected when using iPhoto.

  • How to send from IPhoto to GPS coordinates?

how to send from IPhoto to GPS coordinates?

Do you wish to locat a photo using Lat/Long?  See iPhoto Help
    Add places to your photos
If you have photos that don’t have GPS information, including print photos that were scanned to a disk, you can still map your photos in Places.
    https://help.apple.com/iphoto/mac/help/index.html?lang=en#
Watch the movie (about 2 minutes)
View and organize photos using Places
iPhoto matches recognizable location names you enter, such as “Seattle” or “Milan,” to a mapping database. When you add a location to a single photo or an entire Event, those photos are marked on the Places map.
Or, if you have latitude and longitude information for the place where you shot your photos, you can use that information to add the location.
Important:  You must be connected to the Internet for the Places feature to show photo locations on the map.

    To add a place name:
    Hide
To use latitude and longitude to add a place:
Select the photo or Event you want to add location information to.Tip:  If you select an Event, the location is added to every photo in that Event. But you can add locations to selected photos without adding locations to them all. To do so, select the photos you want, move your pointer over them, and then click the Info button. Skip to step 3.
Click the Info button to open the Information pane.
Select “Assign a Place,” and then type the latitude and longitude, separated by a comma. For example, you can type “24, -110” or, if you prefer, you can use a longer format, such as “24.15988731, -110.50838234.”It’s important to always put the latitude first.
Look at the map to confirm the location, and then do one of the following:
If the location is correct, continue to step 5.
If the location is incorrect, retype the latitude and longitude, or drag the pin to a more exact location on the map.You can use the plus and minus buttons to zoom in and out, and drag the map to center it on a better spot.Note:  You can move marker pins only in the small map that appears below Places in the Information pane. You can’t drag marker pins on the full-size Places map.
If you want, you can view the location marked on the full Places map by clicking the arrow next to the location name.
