How to Switch to New Computer?

My old computer crashed (motherboard gone) so I'm on a new pc. I can not use the old pc at all. I still have all of my songs and vids on my iPod (5G, but how do I use the new iTunes on the new computer and get all of the songs and playlists from my iPod on there?
If I hook my iPod up to the new (completely blank) iTunes will it wipe out my iPod's songs?
Help please!!

Gale,
First off read this article "How to keep iTunes from automatically updating your iPod" http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93779 or another method here: http://www.ilounge.com/index.php/faqs/answers/how-do-i-stop-the-ipod-from-auto-s yncing-when-connected-to-itunes-if-i-auto/
Then have a look at one of these iPod to PC utilities for retrieving your music.

how to authorize my new computer?

    Hi
The process to activate a computer in itunes is similar for Mac and Windows.
On the Mac OS X start iTunes. Click on Store in the menu bar and choose authorize this computer.  In the text Field enter your apple id username and password and click ok. You should receive a message stating “Including this one you have authorized X computers out of your available 5”, Where X is the number of devices you have authorized with your apple ID.
Please note that you can authorize maximum 5 computers with the same apple id.
That means you can play the content you purchased with that Apple ID on up to 5 computers.
The detailed information regarding how to authorize/deauthorize can be found at :

I'm not sure what you mean by "authorize to your iPod". What exactly are you trying to accomplish? Do you mean you wish to sync your iPod to a new computer? If so, check out this user tip from TuringTest:

  • IPod Classic, have music backup, how to synch to new computer?

My PC hard disk crashed, I have a backup of all music which I've copied to a new PC. To synch my Ipod to the new PC  (it doesn't recognize the IPod right now) can I just restore the IPod to the factory default settings and then synch it as if it were new? If not, can someone direct me to where this particular problem is addressed? I've spent an hour looking at almost relevant solutions, but none that match this particular configuration.
    Thanks.

    Howdy LondonBruce,
It sounds like you got all your music into iTunes on your new computer and want to get that music syncing to the iPod classic. If you use the following article to restore the iPod Classic, you will be able to sync your content to the iPod as though it were the first time syncing.
    Restoring iPod to factory settings
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1339
    How to restore iPod
Verify that you have an active Internet connection, because you may need to download new versions of the iTunes and iPod Software.
Download and install the latest version of iTunes if necessary.
Open iTunes. Connect your iPod to your computer using the USB or FireWire cable that came with your iPod.
After a few moments, your iPod will appear in the Source panel in iTunes.
Select your iPod in the Source panel. You will see information about your iPod appear in the Summary tab of the main iTunes window.
    Click Restore.
If you are using a Mac, you will be asked to enter an administrator’s name and password.
A progress bar will appear on the computer screen, indicating that stage one of the restore process has begun. When this stage is done, iTunes will present one of two messages with instructions specific to the iPod model you are restoring.
Disconnect iPod and connect it to iPod Power Adapter (typically applies to older iPod models).
Leave iPod connected to computer to complete restore (typically applies newer iPod models).
During stage two of the restore process, the iPod displays an Apple logo as well as a progress bar at the bottom of the display. It is critical that the iPod remain connected to the computer or iPod power adapter during this stage.
Note: The progress bar may be difficult to see, because the backlight on the iPod display may be off.
After stage two of the restore process is complete, the iTunes Setup Assistant window will appear. It will ask you to name your iPod and choose your syncing preferences, as it did when you connected your iPod for the first time.
Since your iPod is not recognized in iTunes at the moment you can use the following article to troubleshoot that:

  • Hard disk crashed: How to sync to new computer without erasing my iphone

    Hello,
I have an Iphone 4 and Win XP laptop. My old notebook's hard drive crashed and I do not have any itunes backup. Now I have a new laptop and I want to start syncing my iphone to the new computer. I am concerned that as soon as I sync the phone to the computer, itunes will erase everything on the phone. What do I do?
    Thanks in advance,
    -CIL

Download iTunes, log into your account(same one as the purchases on the iPhone).
Plug the iPhone in-you will get warning about different computer, etc.-do not sync.
Either use the prompt to transfer purchases or once the iPhone shows up in iTunes-right click on it and select transfer purchases.
You will only be able to downloaded iTunes purchased content(songs, videos, apps)-nothing from CD or bought from other sources.

  • How do I license new computer after old one died?

    All,
I have a 2007 MBP that had the video card recall (unbeknownst to me until after the fact, might I add). Last year, the video card went out without warning, and Apple says the only thing they can do is replace the Logic Board, but it definitely will not be covered under the extended recall warranty because the issue happened outside of the warranty date. Anyway, all of my iTunes library on that machine is lost I suppose. I didn't have it synced to my phone at the time due to space issues, so I don't have a copy of the library anywhere except in a Time Machine backup. I don't want to restore this new MBA with the entire backup, only the iTunes library. Is it possible? Or can I just re-download the songs since this new iTunes account is set up in the same Apple ID? Any help is appreciated!

Your iTunes Library is unrelated to your logic board, however, you will need to "authorize" your computer to play your iTunes purchased content since iTunes considers a new logic board a completely new computer (which it is).
If for some reason your iTunes Library was lost, of course you can restore it from Time Machine. You can also re-download your iTunes purchased music again since it is all linked to your Apple ID.
You won't be charged for what you already bought.

Hi, i old computer broke a few years ago. I purchased a new lap top and accessed my itunes account but cant play my old songs without authorizing my new computer but cant seem to find the option???

You should have a Store menu option at the top of it (you may need to press Alt-S on a PC with iTunes 11 for it to appear) e.g. screenshot from a Mac :

iTunes -> Store menu -> Authorize this computer. If you have iTunes 11 on a Windows system, press Control-B to show the menus.
