1) Without connecting your iPad to your laptop, start iTunes. Click on Edit. Click on Preferences. Click on Devices. Check the box next to "Prevent your iPod etc. from automatically syncing." Click OK.
2) Now connect your iPad to your laptop and start iTunes.
3) When iTunes starts, right click on your iPad under Devices in the left column. Select Transfer purchases etc.
4) After it finishes transferring all your apps to your new laptop, right click on your iPad and select Backup your iPad.
5) After it finishes backing up your iPad, right click on your iPad and select Restore etc.
6) After it finishes restoring, left click on your iPad , then click on the Apps tab on top, and check the box next to Sync Apps, then click on Apply below.
If everything on your iPad looks good after the sync, go back and click on Edit / Preferences / Devices and UN-check the box next to Prevent your iPod etc. The only other thing you may want to check is if your contacts, bookmarks, etc. are syncing correctly now. If not, go to the Info tab after connecting and make sure you indicate which features you want to sync with what sources.
That should do it.

When you plug in the iPad iTunes will want to restore it/wipe it, so if you do not have the apps in your iTunes then you can copy the apps from the iPad to iTunes when plugged in by right clicking the iPad and selecting "transfer purchased..." which copies the purchases into iTunes.
However as iTunes will only sync to 1 iTunes, it will then want to wipe your iPad, so you need to make sure you have everything in your iTunes that you want back on your iPad.
This is to stop people taking their iOS device to a friends and then taking their paid songs/video/apps.
If you still do not have all of the apps in iTunes, you can either download the Apps via the iTunes store or try and find an application that lets you sync from the computer to the iPad and via versa in place of iTunes. -

Syncing to new computer without losing data - Issue.
Hi all. I have previously made a thread on this issue but things have changed since and so has the original problem, so I thought it needed a new discussion.
I'm currently moving my iPhone from my old Vista PC to my newer Macbook Pro (OS X Lion), without losing data.
As advised, I followed this tutorial: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141
However, after the restore had finished, only my apps were syncing with the new computer. If I want to sync my music or tones etc, it still wants me to erase my iPhone.
Is there another way to get around this? I've reached the stage where it's syncing apps, so I'm almost there... I'd just like to sync the rest too.

Thanks.Firstly, my response was directed to the message with the picture. I don't have the same music as I had before, and unlike the OP who resolved it that way, I lost some music because in order to sync to my new computer I needed to erase all my music on my iphone first! I mean how stupid is that. Leave my music alone and put new music on it!
Look I love my iphone and I'm not hear to promote Samsung (fyi, there are other android companies). What I tried to say was that apple should stop being stupid and change itunes so that I can drag and drop, use multiple computers (because some households have that!), and not have a hassle with simple tasks like that! The ultimatium is change itunes or face costumers leaving your product behind! In the end I wish to keep using the iphone but solely because of itunes I can't and won't! -

My hard drive on my computer crashed! This is the computer my ipad was sync with! All my photos of my three girls are on the ipad, but how do I get them transferred to either an external hard drive or to another computer - or just have them all printed - nearly 1000 photos!
Also, can I back up my ipad with an external hard drive? If I try to sync to a new computer it will erase everything I currently have on the ipad , correct?

The title came from an earlier step in the process when I was posing a question to the systen.
The pertinent part of the question is "How to I back up documents that are stored in iCloud"
That the destination for the backup is NOT my internal HDD should be clear from the rest of the post.
And frankly, even if that is where I want to back up to, that would at least give me two copies, at least giving me one duplicate of the stuff on iCloud.
So please stop wasting my time if you can't answer the actual question: How do I backup content that is stored in iCloud. The destination of the backup is irrelevant.

How can I sync my iPhone/iPad to a new computer without losing data on the devices?
I have the itunes home sharing set up. I have 2 different laptops, each with it's own iTunes on it, and each has it's own library. I have my iPad and iPhone synced to Laptop #1, but this laptop is old and I want to sync my devices to Laptop #2. I've used the home sharing to transfer the songs, videos, etc to move everything from the iTunes on Laptop #1 to the iTunes on Laptop #2. But when I connected my devices to Laptop #2, I got the message saying that my devices were synced to a different iTunes and they can only be synced with 1 iTunes at a time. It warned me if I synced to Laptop #2, I would lose the data on my device, and the data on the iTunes of Laptop #2 would be transferred.
I don't want to lose any of the data on my devices, but I want to sync to Laptop #2. How can I do this? Any help is appreciated, thanks!Hello again and sorry to bother you. I was hoping you could help me with iTunes 10.5. This update has been a pain. When I first installed it, my entire library was gone. Luckily, I saved the "iTunes Library" file before updating and copied it in place and my library appeared. But now the problem I'm having is that the iTunes can't find any of the "original" files, even though my iTunes Media file location has not changed (it's on an external network drive". When I click on the "Do you want to find the original file" I can find it in the appropriate folder. I checked the "Preferences" and under "Advanced" I re-mapped it to the appropriate location and already had the 2 boxes for iTunes organizing files checked. Then went to "File" and "Organize Library" and clicked the first check box and then got the "Copying Files" bar. When this was completed, I thought it would be able to find the original files. But I'm still getting the same error message about not being able to find the "original" files. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks again for your help.

any help on how i can sync to my laptop without losing anything.The iPhone is not intended to sync to multiple computers, even if manually managed (unlike other iOS devices).
There is a workaround where you copy your iTunes library file from the computer you normally use to another computer, and boot the other iTunes with your library file. You then update the "new" library on the other computer with whatever new files you want to transfer to the iPhone. As long as your iPhone remains manually-managed, you should be able to drag and drop the new items to the iPhone. -

My MacBooks logic board is basically dead, and I currently do not have the extra money to fix it. So I'm using a friend's old Dell in the mean time. My question is when I plug my iPad / iPod in to put songs/ other files on there, would everything be erased? I just wasn't sure if it would ask me to restore the iPad and iPod to connect to that computer? I don't want to lose anything I already have as I can only get on the macbook for a few seconds without it going to black screen again.

I bought a new computer and want to use the new computer to sync data with my iPod touch. I understand that you can only sync a device with one computer at a time. This if fine because I don't care to sync my iPod with the old computer anymore. How do I set up my new computer to be the computer that syncs with my iPod touch from now on, without losing any data?
You don't.
When you sync to a different computer it erases the content from the ipod and replaces it with the data from the new computer.
Just copy everything from your old computer, or your backup copy of your old computer, to your new one, then sync -
