How to sync iPhone to (new) computer and keep everything on the phone saved?

I want to put music onto my iphone (the music is on my laptop, and on itunes).
When I connect my iphone to my laptop it asks me to set it up as a new iPhone.
I cannot risk losing any of my data on the phone (eg. contacts, messages, notes, apps, etc).
The phone is connected to my icloud account, and everything is checked to be saved on icloud.
On the computer there is no option to restore from the icloud account.
Do I restore from the icloud account via my phone (and then will it sync the music onto my phone via computer?)? Or set it up as a new iphone via my laptop?
The end result I need to have is for the phone to remain the same (apps, information, contacts, etc.), except with my music (that is on my laptop) playable in the music app.
Thanks so much in advance for any help that could be given!

If you haven't synced you phone with iTunes before the first thing iTunes will do is delete all iTunes media (apps, music, podcasts, etc.) from the phone, then replace it with the media in the iTunes library you are syncing with.  Establishing syncing for the first time without losing your data has to be done carefully.  This guide will give you the process for doing so: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3141.  There is a related guide here as well: https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991.  However, as covered in these guides, only music purchased from iTunes can be transferred from your phone to your iTunes library.  Transferring music from other sources from your phone requires 3rd party software such as Touch Copy.
Other options:
If all your music is purchased from iTunes, it can be download directly to your phone for free without syncing (see http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519).  Another option to get your music without syncing is to subscribe to iTunes Match (see http://www.apple.com/itunes/itunes-match/).  This will scan your iTunes library, match songs already in the iTunes store and upload any songs in your library not in the iTunes store, then make your entire music library (up to 25,000 songs) available to download from iCloud directly to your phone.  (With iOS 6 due out next week on the 19th, iTunes Match songs can also be streamed to your phone without downloading and taking up space on your phone.)

  • How to sync iPhone to new computer after old computer crashes?!

I get the process to sync an iphone with a new computer when you can copy the files from your old computer, but what about when the old computer is no longer working? I have my music & photos backed up, so I'm more concerned about contacts and apps. Any ideas how to get at least my contacts off my phone before syncing with the new computer? Thanks!

  • Sync iPhone with new computer but keep text messages / photos etc

    Hi,
So I have an iPhone 4 that I always synced with my Mac Book Pro. I now use a Mac Pro tower computer as my primary machine. I hear you can only sync with one computer at a time (is this true?) well if so, I'd like to start syncing my iphone with the tower for now on, but am concearned cause my friend was in the same predicament and had a bunch of stuff erased. I see online a lot of people say to manually transfer your music to the new computer and sync, but I want to make sure everything else is properally done as well including contacts photos and the text message / call history etc.
My itunes music is already transfered to the tower. I beleve my "contacts" app is mostly updated on my tower , and even more updated on the phone itself. The photos are only on my iphone, and the text message / call / voicemails are only on the phone ( I dont even think those could be backed up). So - should I just go ahead and try and sync it with the new computer?
What option would I choose...I don't think I wanna swipe it...and although I have my music on the tower, my contacts / photos are on the phone so what is the best way of properly doing this?
    Thanks

You just have to set your preferences in iTunes.
You can choose not to delete contacts etc from the iPhone. After you connect the iPhone, click on the iPhone icon that shows up in iTunes, and go to the appropriate tab, and check / uncheck what you want or don't want.
I don't think text messages get deleted or changed.

This is assuming all the music on your  iPhone is from iTunes, if not, get iTunes Match.
When your phone is connected to the computer, right click the icon of your phone under "devices" and choose "transfer purchases"
This should pull everything you have from the app store/iTunes store on your computer
Transfer pictures over manually using image capture, iPhoto, or from your autoplay option on a windows computer
Once everything on your computer matches your phone, you can go ahead and sync
Whenever you sync from the computer, remember that "syncing" pretty much means your phone will mimic the computer
iCloud will back up your text messages too. Don't worry. If you want to go the iCloud route, your music on your computer would either need to be iTunes purchases or you need to be using iTunes match.
To restore from an iCloud back up, you'd have to erase your phone by going to settings>general>reset>erase all content and settings and choose "restore from iCloud back up" when the phone prompts you. Note: this will restore your phone to factory and kick it into the set up assistant, so triple confirm that iCloud user in
I'd recommend the easy route and just getting your computer's music coded over to iTunes purchases  (with iTunes match) if it isn't already. That way, you can just download it on your phone through the iTunes app.

  • How to sync iPhone to new computer without erasing? (iTunes 11.0.5)

I recently purchased a new computer (MacBook Pro OSX 10.8.5) and I've tried everything to sync my iPhone (3GS) to iTunes (11.0.5)  without having to erase everything and I haven't had any success.
There must be someone out there who has been able to sync their phone to the new iTunes without having to erase all the content on their phone.
    Any help?

    Hi,
    Option 1:
If you have purchased a new Mac from an Local Apple store, I'd advise you to bring in your old computer along with your new one in, and have them assist you on transferring. (Assuming your computer doesn't not even power up)
    Option 2:
If your computer can be powered up (seeing the Apple Logo), and your hard drive is fine, then you can connect the two computers by using a Firewire cable, and then transfer the music files by drag and drop.
         http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1661
    Option 3:
There are 3rd party software that you may purchase used to extract music from your iPhone, but it will have to be done at your own risk.  You may Google for extracting music from iPhone for a start.

The music that  I downloaded from my previous computer to my I Phone constantly plays without notice.  How can I delete it from my phone after downloading to my new computer?????  I will pick up my phone to make a call, and the music is playing, even tho I didn't tap on the music symbol. Is this a problem with my phone??  Can I successfully download from my phone to my new computer????????  This is a very annoying problem and I need it solved.  My battery is always run down.

If iPhone music is not on iTunes Library, you need a 3rd party tool to help you

  • Syncing to a new computer (and keeping iCal and Address Book info intact)

Well, after a few years my old iMac G5 finally died. Fortunately, I was able to grab all of the information off the hard drive and load it onto an external. I have a new iMac and I'm pretty happy.
However, I also have an 64GB iPod Touch that is currently synced to the computer that just died. Now, I want to sync this iPod to my new computer. Now, I have all of my music, photos, and apps and such on my new computer so I'm not trying to pull that off of my iPod. What I'm more concerned about is my iCal and Address Book. I use both often and have a lot of information in them. My new computer has none of this information.
So, what do I need to do sync my iPod with my new computer without losing my iCal and Address Book info? I still have access to the data on my old hard drive, but not the computer itself (if that helps). Hopefully I can get some help soon because I really want to try out OS4...
(Also, I want to make sure that I transferred my Apps correctly. I moved the files I found from my old iTunes folder onto my new iTunes. They seem to show up okay and have received updates but I wanted to make sure that when these apps synced to the iPod again that they would work okay. I'm most concerned about purchased apps and apps that have saved data like Plants Vs. Zombies).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks

Set up at least one contact and event on your computer to be able the merge your calendars and contacts after your ipod will be erased during the first sync.
Disable autosync in itunes, connect your ipod, right click on it in the device list and choose backup.
This will save data and settings to itunes. See what's included in this backup here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1766
Transfer your purchases the same way to copy all apps and bought media from the Store to your computer.
The rest of the data can be restored from the backup you made.

  • How do I sync with a new computer without losing everything?

I no longer have access to the computer I originally synced my iPhone with.  I want to sync it with a new computer and back everything up without losing anything.  How do I do that?  Please help!

Using the information below you can transfer content to your new computer.  Thiis will at least update the content to have what is on your phone but you will still be syncing with a new iTunes library.  It will replace your content but hopefully you can make the replaced content match your existing content.
Make a backup of your computer always.  This is the digital age and it is all too easy to lose music and photos in an instant.
Some of the information below has subsequently appeared in a document by turingtest2: Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device - https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-3991
Your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer was planned with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is iTunes Store purchases which can be transferred to a computer.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only purchases from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

  • Sync iPhone with new computer after old one died

    Hey,
My previous laptop (PC) motherboard died and I just recently brought a new laptop. I did not have a external hard drive or anything, so I lost everything from the laptop. Is there anyway that I can sync my iPhone to the new laptop and have everything, including the songs on the new computer? The new laptop is running Windows Vista.
    Thank you in advance

The iPhone is not designed or intended to be a backup storage device.
When syncing an iPhone with an iTunes library on another computer, all iTunes content on the iPhone that was transferred from a different computer will be erased from your iPhone first, and the same applies to photos transferred to an iPhone via the iTunes sync process.
First you need to authorize your computer with your iTunes account with iTunes. iTunes includes an option to transfer iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes store from an iPod or iPhone, but this is for iTunes content that was purchased from the iTunes store only. With your iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go go File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone. If all 3rd party apps do not transfer to your iTunes library on your new computer, you can re-download the apps with iTunes on your computer and you won't be charged again for a purchased app as long as you use the same iTunes account to re-download the app that was used to purchase the app originally.
Before syncing contacts with a supported application on your computer, which can be with Outlook 2003 or 2007 including calendar events, or with the address book used by Windows Mail (Windows Contacts) for contacts only, enter one unique contact in the application on your computer - the same for a calendar event if you have Outlook 2003 or 2007 available. This will provide a merge prompt when syncing this data, which you want to select.

  • How can I use a new computer without deleting everything on iPod?

    Hey Guys
I need a bit of help.
My old computer died, it was running Windows XP. I've got myself a new computer running Windows 7.
I have a copy of my iTunes folders from my old computer (taken 2 days before it died)
How can I use a new computer without deleting everything on iPod touch?
I've imported all the folders (music, apps etc) into the new computer's iTunes, but when I sync my iPod
I receive a window asking if i want to sync i need to erase and replace with the iTunes library on the computer.
I particularly don't want to do this.
My wife also uses my iTunes for her iPhone.
Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

Make a backup of the iPod by connecting the iPod to the computer and right clicking on the iPod under Devices in iTunes and selecting Backup. Then restore the iPod from that backup and sync as necessary.

I have an iphone 4s that is having display issues. If I turn the phone on, it vibrates to acknowledge it successfully turned on but the screen stays solid black. I can plug the phone into my computer and itunes will recognize the phone as well. However, itunes can not do anything with the phone because the phone is locked and I can not unlock the phone because the screen is black.
    >CURVEBALL!!!<
The screen does work though! Through trial and error along side a little troubleshooting, I was able to figure out that the screen will cut on after the phone dies completely. The phone has to die completely with no battery power left. Then if I plug the phone into a charge and wait a while for it to charge, the phone will turn on like nothing was ever even wrong with it. I charge the phone up to like 30% and turn it off then bam the phone turns on but the screen is solid black again.
I am currently in the process of waiting for the phone to die and when I turn the phone back on I am going to completely remove the auto-lock and lock code off of the phone for the time being.
    Any other suggestions? Please help!

Sounds like the device was dropped at some point and damaged as a result.
Take it to Apple for evaluation and a replacement.
