How to sync same iPhone using 2 different iTune libraries...

I have been trying to figure out how to sync my iPhone 4S to 2 different libraries.
The reason is that I have one library whichhas all my Apps, Books etc. that I keep on one external drive and the other just music as I take that other external drive to dj. As I get new music every day, I sync this to my iPhone so I can get to hear it when I am out.
I tried to open up one library to sync my Apps and books, then switch libraries by reopening iTunes just to sync music.
However it won't allow me as everytime I switch, say I synced the music first, upon opening up the Apps and Books library, it deletes my music (even when I don't have music synced - I am guessing it reads as wiping my music)
Is there a workaround to this?
I am using Lion.
Thanks

Thanks Carolyn for your advice.
Was a bit sad to read that I cannot do that, but I still tested it out. To my surprise, I have managed to find out by testing and testing that (thankfully) iTunes does let me sync with one device with 2 libraries.
As long as the music and books are synced on one library, and apps on the 2nd Library I was able to split the libraries up to two different external drives with their respective iTunes library folders.
It would have been perfect if I could just split the Music by itself as I didn't want the books on the same drive but I am happy nevertheless.
The only bad thing is that the syncing was tested on my iPhone and not my iPad which I don't need music... so I had to add dubplicate books in the library for the iPad with just Apps for my iPhone. Now I have to test whether it will sync my bookmarks between devices for the same books.

  • Can I sync my iphone with 2 different Itunes Library without erasing data?

Hello,. I would like to know if its possible to sync my iphone with two different Itunes library without data from first itunes library getting deleted when sync with second itunes library, (I mean, at least the music and videos)
    Thanks!

iOS devices can only sync with one library at a time.  To sync with a new library, you have to remove the current libraries content.
An alternative would be to move content to one computer (using an external drive or homesharing), and then sync with the library you choose.

  • I accidentally synced my iPhone with a different iTunes, now I lost all my purchased music. How do I get it back?

I had synced my phone onto a different iTunes account without thinking about it. I had purchased a few songs and episodes from the iTunes library and now I'm having a hard time recovering them. The new iTunes lets you purchase previously downloaded apps and books but I can't find anywhere to download my songs and tv shows. I have the list items in my previous purchases history but every time I go to download it again it asks to buy again. Is there anyway of getting them back for download or will I have to suck it up and pay again? I have an iPhone 3GS if that helps. Thanks for your time.

Not 100% sure, but I think even though it says "buy", it will recognize that you have already bought it and it won't charge you again.
Maybe someone here can confirm that that is indeed the case?

As the manual says, you should be importing all pics taken with your iphone to your computer regularly as you would with any digital camera.

  • How do I sync my iphone to a different itunes account?

My whole family has been using the same itunes account for years now, but because of the recent updates we are receving eachother's imessages. We literally have all went in the message settings and changed the options for just our own phone numbers but we are still receiving each others so I decided to get my own account to get rid of this problem. I have went on my iphone and changed my messages, facetime and itunes to log on to my new id, but when I am logged on to my new account on my computer, my computer is not letting my iphone sync to this new account. So long story short, how do I sync my iphone (and ipad) to my new account? (I know that I will lose the music from the other account, I just need this fixed)

  • Can I sync music to my iPhone using a different iTunes library

    Hi guys,
I've seen various discussions on the net concerning this subject, but none of which provide a clear answer. Long story short, my last laptop broke, I now have a new laptop, but am unable to sync music to my iPhone because it's a different iTunes library. When I click manually manage music, I am prompted with a message stating that I'd have to delete all of the music from my iPhone to continue (which freaking *****). I am just wondering if there is a way around this.
    Thanks,
    LW

Oh, it appears the sync from playlist malarkey works. Hurray!

  • How do I sync my iPhone to a different iTunes computer?

    Hello,
I got my iPhone 4 (first timer here), and I synced it to my iTunes at work to activate it. Now I read that it is 'locked' to this computer!
Is there any way I can sync it with my home computer? A solution where the information on my phone is un-touched (no pun intended) is mandatory. At home my iTunes is empty, so don't mind if my home 'library' will get wiped.

In regards to iTunes content - music, movies, tv shows, and 3rd party apps, an iPhone can be synced with an iTunes library on a single computer only, and photos can be transferred from a single computer only. When transferring iTunes content and photos with iTunes on another, all iTunes content and photos transferred from a different computer will be erased from the iPhone first.
The activation process is separate from the syncing process. You can activate an iPhone without syncing the iPhone with iTunes afterwards.
What do you want to sync with iTunes on your home computer if your iTunes library on your home computer is empty. If you have iTunes content available in your iTunes library on your computer at work, don't select Sync Music, Sync Ringtones, Sync Movies, Sync TV Shows, Sync Podcasts, and Sync Apps under these tabs for your iPhone sync preferences with iTunes on your home computer.

  • Sync two iPhones with two different iTunes and iPhoto libraries script

I'm sure this is answered elsewhere, but I was not able to find a solution to this easily. My wife "L" and I, "J" have iPhones, also different tastes in music, and wanted a way to not have all of our own pictures filling up our default iPhoto library. So we first set up two different iTunes and iPhoto libraries. Two diffrent contact libraries would be nice, but contact groups worked okay for this. But then everytime we would sync, it meant opening both iTunes and iPhoto while holding the option key then selecting which library depending on which phone was going to be pluged in. Believe me, you only need to have "Automatically sync" turned on and plug in the wrong iPhone before all sorts of problems arise!
Let me state, I am not fluent with AppleScript, but rather I found bits and pieces close to what I wanted here and there on the www and kept playing until it worked. This works flawlessly everytime on our MacBook, and, unless your initials are J & L and there are only two of you, you will have to change some letters here and there throughout the script to make it work for your situation. Think of this as a rough draft and start to play. I'm sure there is a simpler way to write this script, so to all the real authors, please re-write!
So we have two libraries for iTunes and iPhoto. One set of libraries named J's iTunes library and J's iPhoto library, and another two named L's iTunes library and L's iPhoto library. I wanted to create one app that would close the current libraries, and open the correct ones (or return to our default libraries) depending on what iPhone was to be synced. Using AppleScript Editor and saving the script as an application, this is what I came up with:
display dialog "Do you want to continue to set iTunes and iPhoto libraries?" buttons {"Cancel", "Continue"} default button "Continue"
    tell application "iPhoto" to quit
    tell application "iTunes" to quit
set Y to the button returned of (display dialog "Which libraries do you want to use?" buttons {"L's", "Reset to Defaults", "J's"} default button "Reset to Defaults")
if Y = "Reset to Defaults" then set Y to "i"
    if Y = "L's" then set Y to "l"
    if Y = "J's" then set Y to "j"
    tell application "System Events"
      key down option
      delay 1
              tell application "iPhoto"
      activate
      delay 3
                        tell application "System Events"
      key up option
                        end tell
              end tell
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      keystroke Y
              tell application "System Events"
      key code 36
              end tell
    end tell
    delay 2
    tell application "System Events"
      key down option
              tell application "iTunes"
      activate
                        tell application "System Events"
      key up option
      keystroke return
                        end tell
              end tell
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      keystroke Y
    end tell
    tell application "System Events"
      key code 36
    end tell
if Y = "i" then tell application "iTunes" to quit
if Y = "i" then tell application "iPhoto" to quit

    Hi, thanks for your answer.
Unfortunately this does not work because iTunes still keeps one account with the store active regardless which library I open. So when I switch the account in the store it will be switched for both libraries. That means that I can not separate the iPhone applications and all the other specific sync parameters.
I thought about using my wife's account on the Mac and pointing iTunes to the new library - the problem here is that then the iPhoto library is not accessible any more......
I can't really believe that there is no solution from Apple - I mean there must be more couples and families out there with 2 and more iPhones syncing with one iTunes / iPhoto etc libraries.
Any other ideas? Thanks in advance!

  • I want to sync iphones from two different itunes libraries.

However, im going to another country for studies and wont have my original computer there with me. Is there any way I can sync my iphone with my new computer without erasing everything?

Select all the photos in both albums and order - or make a temp album containing all photos you want to order prints of and select all and order
The easiest way is the second suggestion  --  make a temp album containing all of the photos and select all

  • Sync of iPhone to two seperate iTunes libraries

Just bought my 3Gs a few weeks ago and I've been able to synch my iTunes libarary on my home Mac and download my songs. I also have an HP laptop with an iTunes account which I've downloaded other songs to. Not pirated songs but songs I've bought through iTunes. When I tried to synch my phone to this account, I get a message that tells me I can only synch to one iTunes library with my phone and I'm given the option of erasing the existing library on the phone and replacing it with the one on the lap top. Both accounts are utilize the same login ID. How do I get around this?
Thanks for the help. Sorry for the long post.

Has far as I am aware, you are only able to sync the iPhone to one library.
The only thing I could suggest is copy over the songs off of the HP laptop and put them on your home Mac, next load up iTunes. Next, select the songs you have copied over from the HP laptop and basically drag & drop them into the iTunes window (top left section where the library/music section is). This should add the songs to your iPhone when you sync it.
Before you start though, take a backup of your iPhone just in case you do delete something that you wanted to keep.
In Windows the iTunes library is located in username/music/iTunes, and the library file will end in itl. Also the iPhone stores some other information in the username/appdata/roaming/apple computer. I am unsure as to where these would be located on a Mac as I do not use one, but I would suggest you backup the iTunes folder and the Apple Computer folder in case something gets deleted off of your iPhone, at least if it does you can just copy these folders back over and everything would be fine again. But has long as you copy the songs off of the HP laptop and on to your Mac, and then drag and drop the songs in iTunes (top left section where the library/music section is) and sync then I cannot see you having any problems

  • How can I sync my iphone to a different itunes library without erasing my entire iphone

I have synched my iphone to two computers. I want to synch one of my computers (because it contains more music files) to my iphone... the catch is I do not want to erase my entire iphone to do this.  I only want to erase my current iphone library for the one stored on my current desktop pc.  I would appreciate any ideas. Thanks.

iOS devices can only sync with one library at a time.  To sync with a new library, you have to remove the current libraries content.

  • Syncing an Iphone with a different iTunes account to my iTunes acct?

My son has an older model Iphone that I want to download my apps & music onto. The phone already has my ex-wife's iTunes account on it. When I hook up his phone to my laptop and try syncing it to my acct it always says "syncing" and at the top of my computer "backing up LP's iPhone" but nothing happens. Please advise.

The iphone will sync/access music with ONE computer at a time.
Move all of your music from your old computer to your new one first, then sync.
You can use your backup copy to move the music to the new computer.

  • Having issues setting up the use of two iTunes libraries on one Apple TV.  I can set up my iTunes library as I can turn home sharing on from my own computer, however, my fiance only has an iPad with home sharing turned on and it does not find his account?

I have a new Apple TV which I am struggling to set up with both mine and my fiances music.  I have a laptop, but my fiance only has an ipad and it only seems to sync my music library from my iTunes account.  He has homesharing turned on on his iPad but the Apple TV does not recognise his iPad.  It seems from the help that I have read online that homesharing works when you use the same itunes account, is not possible to be able to use two different itunes libraries with two different accounts (and only one computer)?
    Thanks

Both libraries would need to have been setup to use home sharing with the same Apple ID in order for that to work.

  • Synching to Two Different iTunes Libraries

What are the risks and other considerations in using two different iTunes libraries to send photos to an iPad?
My iPad is synched to my home iMac. I have added photos to the iPad via the iTunes. After some experimentation, I have discovered that if I do not use iPhoto, I can only have photos on my iPad that exist in a singe folder on my iMac. While that is a painful limitation, I can live with it.
Ok, so now suppose I have taken my MacBookAir on vacation with my iPad. (Assume a foreign country with no 3G connectivity or hot spot.) I have taken a bunch of photos and uploaded them from my camera to the MBA, edited them in Photoshop and now want to share the edited photos with friends over dinner.
After overthinking the problem for longer than I care to admit, my "well-duh" moment arrived when I realized that all I have to do is to connect my iPad to the MBA via cable, go to the photos section of iTunes and select my newly edited photos.
I do not have the MBA synched to my home library.
What happens to my existing photos when I transfer my new photos? Gone, is my guess. What about everything else on the iPad that I have synched to the home computer, like music library? Also gone?
In short, is there a way to transfer these photos from my MBA to my iPad without wiping out the rest of what is stored?
I've wallowed around some and seen suggestions like Drop Box, Transfer etc. I'm not sure, but these probably require a wireless connection, and I won't have one. I do have the camera upload kit, but I have not experimented with whether I can transfer edited photos from my MBA onto an SD card for transfer to the iPad (i.e., I do not know whether the files have to be created by a camera, or whether edited photos will work).
Any strategies out there for doing simply what I am trying to do would be appreciated.

You're right; it's not the multiple folders problem I was unhappy about. It was having to put everything in the same parent folder and not being able to select individual photos or folders from other parents that was modestly irritating. Oh well. Maybe iOS version 5 . . . .
As far as photo transfer goes, the iTunes synch may be my only way. I guess I could set up a parent folder on my MBA called "iPad Transfer" and put everything I want--new and old--into it so that every time I synch I get everything.
I'm concerned, however, that the camera connection kit I bought may not be very useful to me. My digital camera is compact flash, so to use the card reader I will have to go out and buy an SD card at the very least. But since I have no device I know of to format the card for a DCIM folder, I think I'm out of luck. There isn't any way to format a new card with a DCIM folder if you don't have an SD camera, is there?
The only way I can think of to use the kit is to transfer shots directly from my camera. These would be unedited, and I'll have to transfer all of them. I'm pretty sure that it is not advisable to transfer edited photos back to a compact flash card, since the camera probably won't read them and will probably screw up the card formatting.
I did try to connect my Compact Flash card via my (non-powered) Lexar card reader and the USB connector that came with the camera connection kit, but no luck. The iPad says it won't work because it uses too much power.
Any other workarounds that you know of?
