  • New Firewire 800 External Hard Drive and how to use old External USB Drive

    Hi All,
I have a new LaCie d2 Quadra Hard Disk hard drive 500 GB - FireWire / FireWire 800 / Hi-Speed USB / eSATA-300 on the way, when it arrives I plan to use it as my Time Machine Backup drive with the FireWire 800 connection. I am currently using a Seagate Free Agent USB 2.0 320 GB external drive as my Time Machine disk. The reason for upgrading is the USB drive is slow slow slow! I am not concerned about the data on my old drive and will just wipe it clean using Disk Utility. What I would like to do is use the old drive to archive iTunes 7.7.1 and Aperture 2.0 music and photographs. Can someone give me an idea how to go about doing this?
    Thanks!

Hi, yes that will copy the whole iTunes..including everything in iTunes..BUT, as you add to your iTunes on the Main HD, with the ext HD I think you will have to manually update anything added. Or dragNdrop the whole thing again.. You could also locate you iTunes music Library & just copy that across..With images once again find your iPhoto library & just copy that across..L

  • How to stop importing from usb drive going into root ITMS directory

First time I imported, everything was fine. I was trying to get rid of some duplicates and got rid of one of the main subdirectories (I had "Itunes Music" folder with two main subdirectories, let's call them "Laptop" and "Desktop." I noticed I had many duplicate artists from these, so I deleted the "Laptop" directory. Naturally, all these showed up with asterisks on iTunes. With no easy way to delete them all (can't sort based on asterisk, apparently), I removed EVERYTHING from my Library and attempted to copy over from the USB drive again. This time, the contents of "Laptop" went into the root "iTunes Music" folder (so there were now ~50+ folders including the "Desktop."
This isn't working for me, since my objective is to get rid of the duplicate work (duplicate tracks I can somewhat stomach, but I also have some duplicate "Artists" which is driving me crazy). I removed everything from the library, deleting it all (~30+GB) and deleted all of the subdirectories from the iTunes Music folder.
When I went to reimport it all again. I dragged the "Laptop" folder from Finder on the USB drive into the iTunes Music directory again (as I did the first time), recreated the and everything continues to populate the top iTunes music folder. Is there any way to stop this? I want the "Laptop" folder to stay in it's subdirectory structure distinct and separate from the "Desktop" folder so I can ensure I am not unnecessarily increasing my structure.
One easy (though extremely tedious) alternative could be to import the folders one at a time... but I'd really like to avoid that. But for my first mistake, this wouldn't have been an issue. I haven't changed any settings on iTunes, so please advise!

I have duplicate (different) stuff on the laptop versus desktop but some unique to each (and all kinda scrambled up). I first started importing on my old G3 ibook. It was slower and chugged harder and some are at really low bitrate, for example, and also lack album art. My XP desktop was made for gaming and is much more powerful, so I always did high bitrate and was much more careful to do all the album art, etc.
Now I'm trying to consolidate it all on my new MBP... Mostly, though, it's a mess and I've been putting this off for years and it's mostly my fault. My biggest gripe is the large number of duplicate tracks. I can live with these when they're from different albums (compilations mostly), but not when one is a lower bit. I imagine I'm gonna be doing it the hard way, one album/artist at a time...

  • Cannot Delete Folders from USB drive connected to Airport Extreme

When I try to delete files from the usb drive connected to my airport I get "cannot remove folder, the directory is not empty.
This only happens for some of the folders that are empty. No problem deleting any files whether they were created before or after I setup the airport. The folders that won't delete were created after I hooked up the drive to the airport however, I can make new folders and delete them no problem now. The ones that don't delete say "read only" in the properties. when I uncheck read only it reverts back to read only automatically.
Any ideas what might be causing this?

Tried what you suggested last night - no change. What is odd, though, is that I can create a new folder on the external USB HDD (through the Hub) and copy a file into it. While I can then close Finder, re-open and see the Folder and file I copied, I still can't see all the data that is currently stored on the drive...Is this a delete and re-copy scenario?
    Thanks!

  • How can I boot from USB drive?

I have installed a Kingston SSD drive on my Macbook Pro. The original HDD is now in a USB enclosure. I tried to boot from the supplied CD by selecting it in the preferences. However they supplied a CD with Aarons for Windows. Now I cannot either clone my HDD to the SSD or boot from the original HDD. How can I override the CD as boot disk?

    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the disk icon of the external USB drive.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.

  • How to set an attached USB drive to automatic sleep using Airdisk?

    Greetings all!
I am looking for a way to set my two USB drives to sleep when they are not being used. I only use them a few minutes a day, and don't want to run them down or use the electricity to keep them spinning.
It seems there has been some discussion about this but I haven't been able parse all the conversations. Some people seem to have gotten it to work, while others are relying on a drives "internal" mechanisms. It would be great if someone (perhaps at Apple?) could chime in with an overview of the problem.
Perhaps it is linked to the method of authentication - ie., (using Airport Utility 5.1), whether the Disks > File Sharing > "Secure Shared Disks" > is with "disk password" or another method?
Some have suggested a radio button for a future firmware/other update such as:
"Set drives to sleep when not in use" (Let's hope for this!), but I am hoping for a simple solution in the near future.
    Any thoughts out there?
    best to all.
*NB: I first posted this on Posted: Apr 4, 2007 12:23 AM and got NO response at all - hopefully I'll have more luck this time !

    Hello Andy,
    Thanks for your reply.
    1. For using Microsoft Outlook rules, we need to keep the computer on, even after work or the colleague is on leave. That is not allowed in my company.
    2. For sending an auto-reply email based on subject, that is impossible because the emails from customers are different and we don't have a basic standard.
    3. Could you please elaborate how to set a transport rule in Exchange server to achieve the goal?
    Thanks a lot in advance.
    Steven
    1. Only client rules require that the Outlook client remain open. An auto-reply rule should be server-side, so no need to leave Outlook open.
    2. Yep!
    3. Walk through the hub transport rules and you see one that replies with a rejection code. Thats the best you can get with a hub transport rule and not something I would recommend in your scenario. You could also search around for 3rd party solutions.

  • "Drive not properly ejected"--How do I keep a USB drive mounted constantly?

I have a 2-month-old iMac, and have had a USB external SATA-enclosure 2.5" 500gb drive attached the whole time. About a week ago, it started randomly giving the "Drive not properly ejected" message and usually it remounts after a few seconds. Sometimes it doesn't and I have to unplug it and plug it back in.
I thought the drive was at fault, so I switched it with a similar drive that was connected to my AirPort Extreme base station. The problem stayed with the Mac. Also I imagined that (somehow) the iMac wasn't supplying enough power, so I bought a powered USB hub. The result is the same.
I don't understand how it can work for two months and then suddenly get this problem. The only change along the line is that about a week ago I did a software update ("About this Mac" says it is 10.6.7). The latest update DOES coincide with the appearance of this problem.
    How do I resolve this?
(Notes: There at least one other thread here where people seem to think that this is a Time Machine problem. I think this is because many people connect large external drives for the purpose of backup. I upgraded to iMac from Mac Mini. I installed Snow Leopard right after I bought the iMac and then tried to restore from my Time Machine backup. Something went wrong, so I mirrored my Mac Mini drive onto a 500gb SATA 2.5", put it in a FireWire enclosure and boot from that. I use the iMac's internal 1T drive for Time Machine. That may sound like "lazy man solution", but it could have a great advantage someday where I could plug that FireWire drive into my Mac Mini and not have any downtime should iMac need to be repaired. The random disconnecting of the USB drive doesn't coincide with any Time Machine events. TM is working fine.)

    Kappy,
Thank you for your help with this problem!
Your hypothesis for the drive/enclosure being a problem is good thinking, however:
-The problem never existed for the first two months I had the iMac.
-I can switch similar drives with iMac and AirPort Extreme, and the problem stays with the iMac.
-It has nothing to do with Time Machine as I am using a FireWire drive to boot, and the iMac internal 1TB for Time Machine.
-A friend suggested a cable problem, but I have tried many combinations and it wouldn't explain why suddenly after 2 months three sets of USB cables can fail at the same time (at least one, I used for 3 years with Mac Mini.)
I now have a 111gb drive connected to my AirPort Extreme and it has been copying files to my FireWire drive slowly but surely for two hours now. The same drive disconnected after 13 minutes on the iMac. All indications are pointing to OSX 10.6.7. The perfect test (for anyone with convenient resources) would be to install Snow Leopard from disc on a clean Mac and not upgrade it, plug in a USB drive and see if it can last a day or two. Then, upgrade to 10.6.7 and see what happens. I hope someone can try this.
(Is this a ploy to try to sell more FireWire equipment? I hope not.)

  • How can I sync 2 USB drives

    Hi there,
    I have 2 USB HHDD.
the first is where I keep all my videos and I bought the second one for backing up the first from time to time.
The question is. what's the more efficient way to do it? because I can copy the first to the second the first time, but it takes ages (1TB) so I'd like to use something that will only update the differences.
Anybody knows how I can do it?
    thanks in advance
    regards

SyncTwoFolder App. Google for it. Or maybe Mac App Store.
But doing what you want will be SLOW as more then likely they are USB 2 drives. Depending on how much data is on the drives and what has to be Synced, it could take hours or most of a day+.

  • HT3764 How do I format a USB drive?

Have a brand new USB drive that someone put one windows file on and distributed at a meeting. I could not read it saying it was not conpatible.  I thought I would reformat it to work on the MAC.
When I did so using Erase - I erased what ever was on there but when it went to reformat - it wouldn't do it. Now all the command buttons are grey. Does this mead the Drive is bad and not formatable? or is there a way to format it?

  • How do I eject a USB drive?!

Just bought a time capsule which Im pretty happy with, bar a couple of things.. 1 being I don't seem to be able to eject the USB drive thats plugged into it. I don't want to simply pull it out as that isn't very wise at all
    any tips?
    thanks!
    Nick

doh! heres me reading other threads where it says I should be able to eject it from the Airport utility and it looks like I can simply right click and eject from the finder! :-)
(Im assuming that means its ejected anyhow - it stills appears in the list on my time capsule once ejected)

  • Is it able to bootcamp via USB drives in Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011?

    I have a Macbook Pro 15" early-2011..
I want to install windows 7 using bootcamp via usb drives.
It is becase my superdrive is broken and i've asked the service center how it will cost to fix it..
    And its about 250$.
I try to enabling the usb boot in bootcamp, but when its done partitioning disk and starts rebooting, there comes a black screen with " there isn't bootable device".
any body can help? and are there any option to boot via USB?
    thanks,
    i apreciate your help

The above post is not completely correct. On your model year MBP the only way to install Windows is from the built in Apple DVD Superdrive. This is not a MS restriction and is totally an Apple restriction. The Firmware on that model year, and any model that has a built in DVD drive, is set to only boot the Windows installer from the built in DVD drive.
Microsoft has nothing to do with it. On any other computer, even a Mac that doesn't come from the factory with a built in DVD Superdrive, you can install Windows from any type of device connected to a USB port, whether that device is a external DVD drive or some type of flash or rotating drive of one type or another.
Also Boot Camp Assistant is for partitioning the Mac hard drive and making that partition ready to install Windows. It has nothing to do with the actual Windows install.  That is all controlled by the Windows install routine.
So your only option is to have the Superdrive replaced or replace it yourself

  • How to attach an external USB drive read-only

I would like to hook up an external USB hard drive and would like to do so in such a manner as to ensure that absolutely nothing is modified on the drive at all. Is there some way I can specify this before I connect the drive or while I plug it in? (e.g. hold down the shift key or something like that.) I have found all sorts of posts from folks who wanted to know how to turn off read-only mode, but haven't had much luck finding out how to turn it on.
I noticed recently when I plugged in a USB stick that it sat and blinked for some time. I'm guessing that OS X was busy indexing the drive. I'm not sure if the index was written back to the USB stick, or cached somewhere locally. If it was written back to the USB stick, I would like to prevent this from happening when I plug in a real drive.
Thanks for any tips you can give me.
    --wpd

If the drive is formatted NTFS, it will automatically mount read-only. If it is formatted HFS+ or FAT, I don't know of any way to external drives to mount read-only without installing OS X Server for $500.
